Gary Kirsten

HEY, IT’S GLOW TIME!

The businessman, the family man, Gary Kirsten the man

FREE / GRATIS

Gary Kirsten

The ultimate family, business and sportsman

Gary Kirsten is a former South African opening batsman and the World Cup winning coach of the Indian cricket team. Kirsten is currently an assistant coach at Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore. This family man has 3 children and is the owner of Gary Kirsten Cricket Coaching business in Cape Town. While travelling Abu Dhabi on cricket camps, Gary Kirsten answered a few questions. Gary, you grew up in Rondebosch, Cape Town. What do you remember about your high school days at Rondebosch High? I really enjoyed the school. It provided me with a strong base to be able to make something of my life. Most importantly, it helped me understand that there is a certain way of doing things when trying to make the most of opportunities. How did you and your wife meet? We met at a popular student “hang out” in Cape Town. You always put your family first. How do you manage the top priorities in your life? I think we are all affected by our experiences as a child. I had two loving parents who did not like each other and it had a significant effect on me. It has made me determined that my children do not go through the same journey. What does a perfect family day look like in the Kirsten household? Like any other fully functioning family – we like to create experiences that provide longlasting memories. On the weekends we will always try and do something together. How and when did you decide that you want to pursue cricket and that you are really good? Not until I had finished school. My only measure in working out whether I could play the game professionally was how many runs I scored. I never thought I was particularly good or talented, but I kept scoring runs. What went through your mind when facing Glenn McGarth? He was one bowler who had the better of me throughout my career. I always felt distinctly uncomfortable facing him and probably did not do myself any favours with my mental approach.

You’ve met and played with/against great cricketers. Did you receive any wisdom you can share with us? The older one gets as a player the more comfortable one becomes with just who one is. I spent a lot of my career trying to be someone I wasn’t to please others. What do you prefer, playing or coaching cricket? I enjoyed the challenge of playing but I have loved every day of coaching. Please tell us about your coaching business? I work with a fantastic group of young enthusiastic and seriously good coaches. We provide a global coaching service to those who are interested in working with us. What does cricket mean to you? Cricket has been a way of life for me. It has taught me everything I am today. I am one of the fortunate few, who have been able to make a living out of something that has remained a passion and hobby. Any motivational words/ tips for a young cricketer? Be only who you uniquely are, represent a strong set of values in everything you do and understand that your career is your journey, not your destination. Don’t let your life be dictated by results and “bottom lines”. What is your favourite song? Don’t have one – do not really listen to music except if I am on a treadmill, which is not often. You reached great achievements in your cricket career, do you have any goals you still want to achieve as cricket coach? I love coaching and helping others learn about themselves. My journey is to continue finding methods and tools that help others optimize their potential.

Bean-andchocolate-brownies

12 Brownies. Preparation 10 minutes. Baking time 25 minutes. This brownies recipe doesn’t really fit into the Keto diet plan because it contains chickpeas and beans. I decided to share this with you because it’s such an interesting recipe and it only contains natural ingredients. The portions are very small so you don’t have to exceed your low carb limit. My Croatian flatmate and very good friend, Natasha Coetsee (née Buratovich) and her business partner, Jessica Riding from the non-profitable dance organization for kids, Move for Two introduced these brownies to me. When she told me how she made it I couldn’t believe her. Try for yourself! Brownies • 30 ml milk • 3 eggs • ¼ cup coconut • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 150 g dates • 1 can (400 g) chickpeas or black beans • ½ cup raw cacoa • ½ t pink salt • 1 t baking powder • 1 tablespoon butter

Chocolate layer (optional) • 100 g dark chocolate (85% of 90%) • 1 tablespoon erythritol • 1 tablespoon butter • 1 tablespoon coconut

1. Preheat oven to 180 °C 2. Mix the milk, eggs, coconut, vanilla and dates in a food processor untill the mixture is smooth. 3. Add the chickpeas or black beans and mix until smooth. 4. Sift the cacoa powder, salt and baking powder in a separate mixing bowl.

Why do you think is it important to eat healthy? Food is very important to me. Not only to look good but food is also important to feel good. Food, exercise and sleep are the 3 main pillars for a healthy lifestyle. I believe that most of the illnesses origin comes from food. What type of recipes will be in your cookbook? Everything will be low carb recipes. Some more than others, but the core of all the recipes will be low carbs. From basic Banting to very low carbs ketogenic recipes. The book will have something for everybody and for every occasion. Tell us more about the Keto diet? Basically, it’s the same as the Banting’s low carbs, high fat diet but the idea is to put your body in Ketosis. Ketosis is the state where your body uses fat as energy and not carbohydrates. The Keto diet is VERY low in carbs, moderate protein and high in fat. You have 20minutes before a call-time, what is your go-to meal? Eggs, eggs and more eggs. Some vegetables like spinach, kale or Brussel sprouts pan-fried with 3-4 eggs. It’s quick and full of healthy nutrients. You can’t go wrong with eggs.

Armand Aucamp’s cookbook, ‘Armand Kook Kaal – 100 banting en Keto Resepte’ will be available from October 2018. In the meantime, Armand shared a very nice recipe with us!

5. Add the bean mixture and the dry ingredients together and stir thoroughly until smooth. 6. Grease an oven plate with the butter and spread the mixture evenly on the plate. Bake for 25 minutes. 7. If you want to make the optional chocolate layer, melt the 100g chocolate, erythritol, butter and coconut in the microwave or on the stove and stir thoroughly. Place one side to cool.

We specialise in: • Axles & Differentials • Automatic Transmissions • Clutches

• Propshafts • Suspension • Brakes

8. Take the brownies out of the oven and cooldown for 15-20 minute 9. Spread the chocolate layer on the brownies and leave for 10 minutes in the fridge. Cut and serve with Earl Grey tea! 10. Put the extra brownies in the fridge!

WHAT YOU HIDING, DUDE?

You know the story. It’s Saturday and you’ve had a big night out planned for ages with your buds, but check your chin and there it is – a bulls eye waiting to burst! THE ZIT strikes again….. Don’t stress – you can make that monster disappear in two minutes. So no hiding away or losing it. Just go into damage control mode like this:

3. Cover it

Top it with your go-to cover-up stick and ZAP! You’ve got your face back. Always use a camouflage concealer that has a tacky texture and comes in a stick or with a sponge applicator that is made to stay put. Dab your concealer onto the top of the zit and then blend softly outwards with a clean finger tip. Avoid a caked-on look by applying more if necessary. Choose a concealer that matches your skin tone. Just because you’re a guy doesn’t mean you can’t cover it up.

Even if the disco era of the ’70s seems like ancient history to you, trust me, you’ll want to live in the sequin trend it passed down and is trending RN. THERE’S SOMETHING FISHY GOING ON... FISHNETS, tights and socks, are the big accessory news for winter. Anyone who thought they would never be caught in fishnets, think again, because the Kardashians have figured out a sassy way to wear fishnets with class which is right on fleek. Wear them under your slashed jeans! It’s such a subtle and effortless way to add a new dynamic to your outfit and extra eye-popping drama at a time of year when street style can start to feel a little B-O-R-I-N-G. It won’t keep you feeling warm, but it will keep you looking cool. Fishnets make any pair of sneakers look fancy. Roll up a pair of jeans and show off your fishnet socks and you’re set to slay your squad. Go for micro-sized fishnet if you want a subtle look or blow it all with large diamonds for an edgier look. Same applies to fishnet tights.

The Stirling Chamber Choir

Congratulations to the first 6 members of the new 100 Club. Members have all scored 100 or more runs for the Lilyfontein 1st Cricket team. Lilyfontein School has introduced a new trophy for the players in the 1st cricket team who score 100 runs or more. The trophy is made from the bat that was used by Branden Vortser to score the first three 100’s for the Lilyfontein 1st team. Only 6 players have achieved 100’s for Lilyfontein, between them they have scored 12 100’s since 2007.

For the first time ever the World Choir Games will take place on the African continent. Amateur choirs from 77 nations will descend on the Jacaranda City for 11 days (4-14 July). The Stirling Chamber Choir will compete in the main Champions Competition - namely mixed youth choirs and folklore with accompaniment. They will also attend a private workshop by a world renowned conductor from Belarus and perform at a friendship concert in Pretoria. The Stirling Chamber Choir recently received Cum Laude (91%) at the ATKV Regionals and with this level of excellence Stirling hopes to bring back a World Champ title!

Jetting off to Germany on exchange Hudson Park High School pupil, Adriaan Jordaan, will represent the Eastern Cape as an exchange student in Germany during the July holidays. He came first in the province and 15th in the country during the Friends of South Africa (FSA) youth exchange programme. Jordaan was awarded 86%, the highest mark in the Eastern Cape. The headmaster, Mr Dennis Vorster, has commended Adriaan’s academic efforts and said that the school and staff are proud to see another pupil from Hudson being chosen for the programme.

Cheerleaders The Cheerleaders were invited to do a display at the Eastern Cape Majorettes and Cheerleading Associations Provincial Championship which took place on Saturday 2nd June at Gonubie Primary School. As it was stated in the Go & Express Newspaper, “Hudson Park High School gave an electrifying performance, clearly indicating that they are a force to be reckoned with.”

Old Hudsonian awarded cricket contract with the warriors Sine Qeshile who matriculated at Hudson Park High School at the end of 2017 has been awarded a Warriors Cricket contract for the 2018/2019 season. Sine, was the Hudson Park and Border cricket captain in 2016 and 2017 and represented South African Schools’ cricket in both these years. In 2017 he was awarded the highly prestigious “ Player of the Tournament” award at the inter-provincial Khaya Majola U/18 provincial cricket week.

Our blood is red Once again, the Hudson Park family showed their compassion and care when we came in our numbers to the blood drive. A total of 64 units were collected, 5 units above our target of 59 units. We as Hudsonians, always set the bar high and always want to improve, so we hope to double the number of blood donations at our next blood drive which will be on the 4th of September.

AWSUM News is changing the world of school news The biggest school network in Africa has been launched, where school news is shared 24/7 via a central news portal, namely www. awsumnews.co.za. More than 1 800 schools are part of this network and the news is loaded per region to provide each school with national and regional exposure – free of charge. Schools wanted more exposure outside of their direct community and parents wanted to read about school news on a central hub, making it the logical next step. The schools submit their news directly, making our news relevant and audience specific. This school news initiative is designed to integrate with our multiplatform strategy for schools – a first of its kind worldwide. These platforms include: AWSUM Newspaper, a monthly publication in 8 regions countrywide; AWSUM App for Schools, for mobile communication between school, parents and learners;

AWSUM Radio, the first radio station exclusively for SA schools and a pioneer in the industry; and AWSUM News, the 24/7 school news website. “It is our responsibility to constantly renew to give school and their learners the exposure they deserve”, says Durandt van Zyl, Chief Executive Officer at the TieMedia Group that is managing the AWSUM brand. “AWSUM News is an easy-to-read website where parents, learners, teachers, and grandparents can read the latest about schools in the region, as well as food articles and recipes, news clips on the latest movies, and much more.” Van Zyl invites all schools to send their daily school news for placement and include any sport (internal and external), cultural and academic achievements as they happen. For more information send us a mail to awsumnews@tiemedia.co.za.
