Jamandi and Machiel, better known as the “Lekker Bekkers” and the first winners of M-Net’s reality program, My Kitchen Rules. AWSUM caught up with them at their guesthouse in Bloemfontein, Solo Gracia. It is almost a year after MKR and we asked them about their schooldays, MKR, Braai day and more.
Where did you matriculate? J: Hoërskool Hartswater in the Northern Cape. M: I am an old Lantie, Hoërskool Jacobsdal Landboudal.
On your 10th year anniversary, you shot the last episode for My Kitchen Rules. What is your recipe for a healthy marriage? First of all, you have to be best friends and you have to have a great relationship with God. Respect one another and lots of love.
Please tell us a bit about your childhood, what do you remember of school? J: I hated studying, but my friends and all the social events made up for all the studies. M: I will always remember the athletics, horse riding and the ‘kuiers’ in hostel rooms. How would you describe yourself as a teenager? J: I was a rebel. M: I was just naughty.
Where does your love for food come from? Both of us is very social and that is where our love for entertaining people and making food came from. What dish would you make one another to treat him/her? J: Pork chops and mash with a can of spaghetti. It sounds terrible I know but Machiel is a bit weird. M: She loves potjiekos. Any food you refuses to eat? J: Tomato sauce M: Tomato sauce
What was the first dish you learned to make as a child? J: Definitely toasted cheese, I loved it. M: If I remember correctly scramble eggs. Please describe the last year after My Kitchen Rules? Our lives at the moment are very busy. Weekends we are touring with our Weber Pizza and Pop-up restaurants. During the week we try to stay home and spend time with our kids. We love every moment of our lives at this moment.
Any advice for our readers who wants to enter a reality program? Always be yourself. That is the most important lesson. People will criticise you, the media will tear you apart but always stay true to yourself. What is next for the Lekker Bekkers? We are doing another tour, maybe a recipe book, maybe a TV program, who knows?
What was the biggest lesson you learned during My Kitchen Rules? The biggest lesson was to trust your instincts and always trust one another. Stick to the recipe! And stay down to earth.

Chess Championships
Lilyfontein Adventure Race 2018 a massive success
Keagen Meise achieved South African colours for chess and was chosen to represent South Africa at the 2018 Commonwealth Chess Championships which were held in India in July. He competed in the u12 Open section and played 11 rounds. Although the competition was tough, Keagen says he learnt so much from the experience. Well done Keagen on a wonderful achievement. Cambridge Primary is very proud of you!
This year’s Lilyfontein Adventure Race (AR) was the biggest and best race since we started hosting in the year 2000 and sums up the Lilyfontein values and ethos that we strive to achieve. Several categories were created to cater for all ages and fitness levels. The appeal is the ability to progress through the various categories and gain experience until one is ready to tackle the premium event the Corporate Division. This year we hosted 132 teams in 10 different divisions with over 492 participants and 6 race routes and over 50 marshalling points with hundreds of volunteers. We would like to thank everybody that was involved and the greater East Coast community for supporting Lilyfontein School throughout the years. Thank you to Mrs Mitchell – Event Director and her Adventure Department for all the energy required to put this event together. The routes were so adventurous this year as we saw teams sliding, pushing and swimming throughout the race with lots of hills, a cave, some paddling and abseiling, thanks to Mr Angelbeck and Mr Matthewson for the U15, U19 and Corporate/Crocs and Duo teams respectively and Mrs Jackson and Mrs Fouche for the grade 4-5 and grade 1-3 routes respectively. The future of Adventure Racing is strong, and we encourage more families and learners to participate in 2019. The results are available at www.awsumnews.co.za
