Welcome to the annual Derby!

The annual Derby between Grey High and Selborne College is sure to once again be an encounter that is played with passion, in a good spirit and with a great sense of camaraderie.

The Derby, not only serves as an opportunity for our two schools to compete, it acts as a weekend where we are reminded of our common heritage and the traditions that have shaped our schools. As such, each Derby between our schools acts as an important marker that reminds every participant - staff, pupils, parents and old boys - that they are part of a greater story and that their individual contribution adds to the rich history of their schools.

A significant amount of preparation has gone into this weekend. I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Rufus Dreyer and his boarding house committee for their hard work in setting up the farmers’ market. In particular, Mrs. Nicola Reardon, who has led the farmers’ market committee, dedicated hours of work for the benefit

of our boys. I also extend my thanks to Mr. Bielby and his team for handling all the formal arrangements for the weekend. Of course, the weekend would not be the same without our moms, who generously give their time to assist.

A special thank you goes to Mrs. Sue Atherton and her team for managing the catering.

Kudos to Mr. Daniels and his ground staff for ensuring that our grounds are in excellent condition. I also appreciate all our staff members who have worked tirelessly in coaching and preparing our boys, dedicating countless hours to our sportsmen. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to all the parents, family, and friend; your presence is always valued.

This is a weekend that we all look forward to and I trust that it will be most enjoyable. Best of luck to all our boys; may it be a great weekend for one and all.

How is the composition of the team for this weekend? Are there any injuries?

The lineup for this weekend looks promising. It features players who are talented and have been training hard the whole year. Fortunately, we currently have no injuries.

Many people will want to know how your day goes from the big game to your run.

Do you have any rituals or traditions?

There isn’t much that I do, but I listen to my music to keep me calm and pray before stepping onto the field.

Are you happy with your results as a team this year?

Our results have been up and down, not what we were aiming for, but I’m happy with the effort we’ve put in.

What do you expect from Selborne on Saturday?

I’m expecting them to come out firing, put up a fight, and have the ‘never say die attitude’.

What does being captain of Grey High mean to you?

It’s such a great achievement for me as a person. It’s been an honor and privilege to have captained Grey High’s 1st XV.

How do you as a team deal with the expectations of your fans and spectators?

The expectations are high, as they should be, but we try our best to stay focused and play by our system.

Which famous player (any sport) do you look up to and why?

I look up to Damian De Allende and Rieko Ioane. They’ve got exceptional skills, and they are versatile on the rugby field; I just love their style of play.

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

That we give our best and never give up.

How does your team prepare in the week leading up to a big game such as this weekend against (opponent)?

The same as every week: 3 practices, a couple of meetings, a couple of gym sessions, and some positive affirmation.

Where would you say your strength lies this year?

The culture created by the boys. They are focused on hard work above all else.

Who has had the biggest influence on you as a coach in your life? Is there someone you look up to?

Robbi Kempson, Darron Nel, Simon Bolze, Sean O’dea, Andre Van Zyl.

What message do you convey to your team just before they run on the field? Keep it simple. Adapt fast. Speak kindly to yourself. Breathe.

How is the composition of the team for this weekend? Are there any injuries?

We’ve picked the best possible team we have available. Mr. Miles has ensured that we have consistency in our selection to benefit our chemistry. Fortunately, we have no serious injuries.

Are you happy with your results as a team this year? there’s always room for improvement. However, we have managed to produce some good results that make us content.

What do you expect from Grey High on Saturday?

Grey is a good outfit, so we leave no stone unturned on our side. We expect a battle until the last minute, and we have long-standing respect for them.

What does being captain of Selborne mean to you?

It’s the highest honour I could possibly be bestowed as a sportsman. It comes with great responsibility and tough times, but being the face of our rugby club means the world to me.

Many people will want to know how your day goes from the big game to your run. Do you

I try to keep every match day buildup the same. I keep it as simple as possible to minimize distractions, make sure I’m ready the night before, and show up early for our day’s program..

How do you as a team deal with the expectations of your fans and spectators?

When accepting a 1st XV jersey, you accept all that comes with it, which means there will be pressure and expectations. With the nature of our sport, players are required to have a level of maturity to understand that you will disappoint people sometimes, but as said, it’s the nature of our sport.

Which famous player (any sport) do you look up to and why?

Conor McGregor. I think beyond all the flashy and spectacular fame he has, there is a warrior that dedicates himself to his craft and works harder than all of his competitors. That is why he has found so much success in his discipline. I aspire to adopt the same mentality and work ethic as him.

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

Our two schools first faced each other in 1926, and like all traditional derbies, this match will be filled with passion and determination. The last time Selborne won in Gqeberha was in 2015, with a score of 22-18. This weekend’s game will mark the 53rd meeting between the two schools. We are determined to achieve the key performance indicators (KPIs) we have set for the match. While we won’t reveal too much, our focus will be on gainline success, tackle completion, dominant tackles, and RTP statistics.

How does your team prepare in the week leading up to a big game such as this weekend against (opponent)? (physically and mentally) We are nearing the end of a physically demanding season, and we will maintain our weekly routine as much as possible. At this stage, less is often more. Our goal is to ensure the boys are in the best possible mental and physical shape for the match.

Where would you say your strength lies this year?

I have had the privilege of working with some of the finest young men I’ve ever met. They have learned to unite as brothers, play for each other, and fight for every inch on the field. Their character shines through in our defense and off-the-ball efforts.

Who has had the biggest influence on you as a coach in your life? Is there someone you look up to?

Over the past 25 years of my coaching journey, I have had the privilege of working alongside many wonderful coaches. In no particular order, these include Tim Fraser, Balie Swart, Gerry Posthumus, Jarryd Buys, Beän van Eeden, Brent Janse Van Rensburg, Marius Hurter, Phiwe Nomlomo, Chase Morison, Russell Winter, Adam Robertson, Byron Schmidt, Roy Godfrey, Harley Searle, Hans Coetzee, and Jake White. Each of them has positively influenced my perspective on the game. The truth is, you can never stop learning.

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

We want to end the season in a strong manner. It’s lovely to play your last fixture at home, and so we want to play an attacking brand of hockey.

How does your team prepare in the week leading up to a big game such as this weekend against Selborne College?

We maintain our structures in terms of principles and the Grey way. We show respect to the opposition by analysing them, but our play revolves around what we want to do well on the pitch, both with and without the ball.

Where would you say your strength lies this year?

We love to go forward and play with the ball.

Who has had the biggest influence on you as a coach in your life? Is there someone you look up to?

Most definitely, I am very blessed to have learned so much from a number of coaches. However, one individual, my mentor and current Ireland men’s assistant coach, Neville Rothman, has really invested a lot of time into my journey.

How is the composition of the team for this weekend? Are there any injuries?

The team is looking strong, and this will be a tough encounter.

Are you happy with your results as a team this year?

Yes, we have shown character in a lot of tough fixtures, and we want to end on a high note.

What do you expect from Selborne on Saturday? I expect the clash to be a hard-fought encounter. Selborne will give everything to come away with a victory.

What does being captain of Grey High mean to you? It means everything to me. It is a dream come true, and I have worked hard over the past 8 years to reach this point.

Many people will want to know how your day goes from the big game to your run. Do you have any rituals or traditions? We sing our 1st team song with passion to remind us how to represent the badge and our school.

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

Expect a team that is going to give their absolute best. A team that is confident in its ability to play. Win or lose, they will be gentlemen and will most certainly give all they can to make the school proud.

How does your team prepare in the week leading up to a big game such as this weekend against Grey High?

It’s not a matter of just preparing this week; we have been preparing the whole season. This week, we focus on polishing up the finer details and reviewing key areas of our game.

Where would you say your strength lies this

In our ability to play as a team and identify phases in the game that require particular styles of management.

Are you happy with your results as a team this year?

I’ve been extremely happy with the work ethic from the squad. We’ve really produced some good results. We are currently 6th in the country, and overall we’ve scored 141 goals and only conceded 36.

What do you expect from Grey on Saturday?

Grey is always our biggest competition in the Eastern Cape, and they always provide a great fight. They have had a great season and are currently 3rd in the country, so the Eastern Cape final should provide an exciting game of hockey.

What does being captain of Selborne mean to you?

Being given the honour of captaining the Selborne side has been an incredible experience. I’ve really enjoyed being able to share my love and knowledge of hockey with such a hardworking, diligent group of gents. We set goals for our season, and we’ve met most of them. The only one left is to win the Grey derby.

Who has had the biggest influence on you as a coach in your life?

Is there someone you look up to? I wouldn’t say there has been one person. I have tried to take as much as I can from working with many different coaches.

What message do you convey to your team just before they run on the field?

Go out there and give it everything you have. Don’t leave any regrets behind. Do what got you into this team in the first place.

Many people will want to know how your day goes from the big game to your run. Do you have any rituals or traditions?

Within our school, Fridays are extremely festive and full of excitement with our weekly sing-song at first break. From there, the rest of the day mostly entails a lot of music during and before our warm-ups.

How do you as a team deal with the expectations of your fans and spectators?

The past few years have seen upsets for Selborne supporters in the Friday night games, and we know that we have the school behind us to change that narrative this year.

Which famous player (any sport) do you look up to and why?

Andrew Cronje is someone I have tended to look towards in search of guidance in my hockey career. He was an Olympic captain of our SA hockey side and has lots of experience. He’s really been a great mentor and teammate to play club with for the past 3 years.
