AWSUM Celebrity Interview

Singer-songwriter Matthew Mole made chart history as the first South African artist to enter the iTunes SA charts at #1 on the first day of releasing his debut album ‘The Home We Built’. This talented and unassuming multi-SAMA and MK awards nominee chatted to AWSUM News about his music, life and future aspirations. Q Just about the whole of South Africa heard the iTunes news when ‘The Home We Built’ was released. Did you expect this success? How did it feel to be an overnight sensation? A I was blown away completely. I really didn’t expect that kind of thing to happen. I was just next-level excited to have an album on iTunes. It’s super encouraging to have such great support! Q Who are your music icons? A I have so many – ranging from the people everyone’s heard of like Mumford & Sons, to people like Gold Panda. I’ve always admired Jónsi, a band from Iceland. They just go beyond predictable songwriting when it comes to instrumentation. So musically, that has been one of my biggest influences. Q What inspires you creatively and personally? Who are ‘your people’? A I’m not the best at speaking, but through music it’s natural. It takes up a lot of my time, it drives me; it makes me who I am. My songs are inspired by my family, the people that I love. They are a firm base of support and grounding. My Dad told me about a dream that he had where I was running a race. His job was to help me shoot off from the starting blocks. We all have an enormous amount of potential to look to something far bigger than ourselves to give us what it is that we need to walk into that potential and run with it. Q What was your journey to become a professional musician? Have you been a musician since childhood? A I never thought I’d become a full-time musician, but my father taught me how to play the guitar and started me off playing covers. It all comes from a genuine love of songwriting, rather than any serious career choice. I started writing my own songs at the end of high school — I had no idea what I was doing, I was just writing the worst songs in the world! I just loved the idea, so I wrote as much as I could.

AWSUM NEWS NOVEMBER 2017

Q What was the highlight(s) of your career this far? A The first time I played at Splashy Fen, a South African festival in the Drakensberg, always stands out. It was the first time I had really felt such an amazing atmosphere with the interaction between the audience and myself. It was such an encouraging show for me. Also, I was in Hollywood for Musexpo in 2014. I was walking along some random street. Out of nowhere, Snoop Dogg just pops out of some apartment. It was so chilled, but my mind couldn’t handle it. It was hilarious. Snoop Dogg. That’s not even close to normal for a South African like me. Q What role does social media play in your career? A I think it’s huge! It’s an amazing tool that hasn’t always been there. It’s a massive step forward for all kinds of businesses. It’s really awesome to get feedback from and interaction with fans and followers, and at the same time I hope it is awesome for them. Q What are some of your favorite places to play in South Africa? Over the years, what have been your favorite events to play? A Kirstenbosch Gardens is always an amazing show. I love Durban audiences. Pretoria is literally the place that I have played some of my favourite shows of all time! Q You are known for playing quite an array of instruments, some of them rather quirky, like the ukulele and banjo, as well as piano, organ, guitars, drums and a wide variety of percussive instruments. How did you become so musically versatile? A My Dad taught me how to play the guitar, he’s super good. From there I just wanted to try so many other instruments. So when I came across one, I just messed around and learned what I could. Q What message do you have for our readers (high school kids) about leading a successful life and achieving their dreams? A Obviously you need inspiration and influences. But don’t be too influenced. You need some of your own visions and ideas, so that you can feed them with your influences. Persistence is super important. Meeting lots of people too.

DADDY’S HOME 2 24 NOVEMBER 2017

The beautifulseeded apple The protea is our national flower and the pomegranate is the national fruit in Xian in China. I believe that many scholars debate whether the apple in the Garden of Eden was in fact a pomegranate! The pomegranate is native from Iran to the Himalayas in northern India and was cultivated and naturalised over the whole Mediterranean region since ancient times. I love this Biblical fruit; I love every one of the little ruby jewels contained under its skin. These seeds (called arils) are what we eat either raw or processed into pomegranate juice. It is said that pomegranates are among the healthiest fruits on earth. They are said to contain a range of beneficial plant compounds, unrivalled by other foods. Studies have shown that they have incredible benefits for your body, and may lower the risk of all sorts of diseases. An average pomegranate yields 3/4 cup seeds and 1/2 cup of juice. When you go shopping for pomegranates make sure that you choose them with a thin, yet tough skin unbroken skin. They should have a deep red colour and be heavy for their size and a crown that is free of mould. Pomegranates will stay fresh for about two weeks when you store them in a cool, dry place; make sure that this is out of direct sunlight. If you keep them in the refrigerator, they can be stored for up to two months. Although it is recommended that you don’t freeze the fruit whole, the seeds can be frozen. They are in the shops now, so go and get some.

Local team to participate in international championships The drummies at Hottentots-Holland High School are not only the Western Province champions for the past three years and currently ranked 3rd for large drill and 2nd for small drill in South Africa, but they have been selected to participate in the Majorette World Championships in September 2018. Only five South African teams were selected to march in the small drill section and HHH, as they are affectionately known, is the only one form the Western Cape. “2018 will mark the 41st year of drummies at HHH. It has taken that long to practise, perfect and develop our unique style and ethos of excellence to get us to where we are today. It is not for the faint hearted, as we have long practises and need to raise lots of funds to travel to national competitions and get new flags and uniforms. Our girls come from troubled areas and financial support is a constant worry,” says Karin Verster, ex-teacher of HHH and volunteer head coach. The international championship includes teams Page 6

from 26 countries and will be held for the first time in South Africa, at the Grand West Arena. Over and above the accolade of being selected as a team, five of the HH drummies were selected to also march in Team South Africa displays: Amy Malgas, Jaylene Roussouw, Ashlin Adams, Caithlyn Daniels and Tsion Petinger. These girls are already attending practice every weekend to perfect their baton, pompom, mace and dance skills. HHH drummies look forward to another successful season next year, including national championships in July to be held in Oudshoorn. “We are always looking for ways to raise funds or do promotional marches and call on the community to get behind these young ladies as they try to uplift themselves and their communities,” says Karin.

Verder was

RHENISH GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL Rhenish Rhodes Scholar

For the third time since the Paul Roos Rhodes Scholarship was made available to Rhenish Girls’ High learners in 2010, a Rhenish learner has been awarded this prestigious scholarship. Helene-Mari van der Westhuizen (2009) follows in the footsteps of her Rhenish sisters, Grace Kim (2004) and Helen Taylor (2006), who were awarded the scholarship in 2010 and 2012 respectively. With the Rhodes scholarship, Helene-Mari (MBChB Cum Laude), who is currently completing her internship in East London, is applying for a DPhil in Primary Care at Oxford University where she hopes to look at strategies for TB prevention in high burden settings. TB is an issue that is very close to Helene-Mari’s heart – she is co-founder of the NGO TB Proof, which focuses on preventing tuberculosis transmission in healthcare facilities and reducing the

SOMERSET COLLEGE Young water skier receives SA colours Nicholas Stegmann (Grade 10) was awarded his SA colours for water skiing in 2016 and received his green blazer this year after the SA Championships. He is currently the SA and All Africa Champion. He holds the u14 and u17 slalom records for South Africa. The u17 record stood for 19 years prior to him breaking it. Nicholas is currently ranked 6th in Europe and 10th in the world in his age group. He trains in Elgin and competes locally and overseas.

stigma associated with having TB. She has presented research on TB infection control both at national and international conferences, published in the South African Medical Journal, International Journal of Infectious Disease and International Journal of Infection Control and she has represented TB Proof at key stakeholder meetings, including with the World Health Organisation, Global Fund and Stop TB Partnership. Another issue that Helene-Mari feels very strongly about is the impact of fatigue on medical error. She campaigned strongly for the Safe Working Hours petition and their work has seen a reduction in the maximum duration of a continuous shift for junior doctors. Helene-Mari’s passion and energies are not reserved for things medical, however, but extend to all areas in which she becomes involved. An accomplished

oboist and pianist at school, Helene-Mari needed an outlet for her passion for music while studying towards her medical degree and so became a founding member of the Stellenbosch University Medical Orchestra, in which she performed until 2015. If ever there were a woman who epitomises the qualities that we hope to see in a Rhenisher, it is Helene-Mari van der Westhuizen. Rhenish Girls’ High salutes her on her latest accolade – we are so very proud of her. We hope that in some small way, some of who the woman Helene-Mari is becoming today is as a result of seeds that may have been planted, watered and nourished during her time with us. Rhenish wishes Helene-Mari van der Westhuizen well as she pursues her dream of a career that combines public health with clinical medicine in the pursuit of addressing the health inequalities that plague South Africa.

Exceptional Somerset College student saving neonates

At the annual Somerset College Awards Evening, Lloyd Everett, a Somerset College Cambridge student, was acknowledged by Investec for the extraordinary work he has done with Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch University’s Department of Paediatrics and Child Health. According to Professor Adrie Bekker, a neonatologist at Stellenbosch University, “approximately half of all babies born at Tygerberg Hospital are born prematurely or are of low birth weight, with sepsis being a major cause of suffering and death at Tygerberg and in neonates globally. Early identification of neonatal infection events and outbreaks is essential to improve patient outcomes and prevent infection transmission. Currently, possible outbreaks or infection clusters in public hospitals are identified manually by sifting through large electronic laboratory datasets.” Hence the need for an improved data analysis was recognised to ensure faster and less labour intensive detection of outbreaks. Lloyd Everett, who takes Computer Science as one of his three Cambridge A-level subjects, helped set up an electronic surveillance system for neonatal bloodstream infections. Lloyd designed several MSExcel plug-ins that will automate the current seven-step manual analysis method and save time for nurses. He also wrote code to identify infection clusters and alert the infection prevention team of a possible outbreak. Professor Bekker and Dr Dramowski, who worked with Lloyd, say, “The product he designed will revolutionise the way we conduct neonatal infection surveillance, identify outbreaks more rapidly and potentially save newborn lives by allowing us to implement infection prevention measures more quickly.’ Lloyd received the Investec Out-of-the-Ordinary Award for this groundbreaking work to support newborn care at Tygerberg hospital.
