FROM OUR SIDE
Settling into another exciting year
The year is now thoroughly under way and even though the heat is still with us, schools have already had amazing sports events, as witnessed by the school news streaming in from all over the country. We wish everyone well with upcoming events and hope many records get slain during the athletics season. This edition of AWSUM News brings you an exclusive centrespread Super Rugby feature, which you can keep for the duration of the Super Rugby tournament. Use it to find and keep track of all fixtures and make sure you never miss a a game! (For the other sports enthusiasts, you will find the latest rankings for different schools sports on the back page.) We also look at healthy eating from a few different angles, including healthy lunchbox suggestions by food and nutrition gurus Patrick Holford, Jamie Oliver and Kath Megaw. You can look forward to regular food features and features on foodie trends and personalities, starting with a look at the so-called Mediterranean diet in this edition. From next month,

The Mediterranean lifestyle and its benefits When you hear the word “Mediterranean,” what do you think of? Perhaps you envision crusty loaves of bread, tender olives, and fresh herbs. Or maybe you imagine a glass of red wine shared with friends. Better yet, you might picture yourself watching the sunset over a lush vineyard from the open deck of a grand Tuscan villa. All these things are characteristically Mediterranean, but they do not define the Mediterranean lifestyle. In the same way, there is no single Mediterranean diet, because the word Mediterranean is used to describe a group of more than 15 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. You may be wondering what then constitutes the Mediterranean diet trend that has recently become popular. Rather than prescribing a strict set of rules for foods to eat and foods to avoid, the Mediterranean diet offers guidelines for a healthfy way of life. The Mediterranean diet is about more than just food, however – it is about living life to its fullest and being healthy as you do. The Mediterranean diet is about eating wholesome foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, wholesome grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. And who could forget olive oil, fresh fish, and good wine? Though the Mediterranean diet is high in dietary fat, more than half of the fat calories consumed in the Mediterranean diet come from monounsaturated fat. Monounsaturated fat comes from sources like olive oil and avocados. In 2009, a study was published in the Journal of Nutrition regarding the effect of the Mediterranean diet on the risk for chronic disease. The results of this study suggest that an eating pattern high in plant foods and unsaturated fats, like the Mediterranean diet, can reduce the risk for lower abdominal obesity and coronary heart disease (Romaguera et al., 2009).
The Mediterranean diet is all about healthy eating habits and enjoying the food you eat.
(Article by Kath Megaw, co-author of Feeding Sense (Metz Press, 2012. Kath holds four medical qualifications including a paediatric dietetic qualification from Johns Hopkins. She frequently speaks to groups of both professionals and parents on infant and childhood nutrition, and appears on television and radio shows. Kath has been in private practice for the past 15 years and is the founder of Nutripaeds, a paediatric dietetic practice.)
Following a Mediterranean diet is just as easy when it comes to packing healthy lunches and lunchboxes. You can use wholesome, natural fish products, including herring, calamari, and herbed and peppered mackerel, which is a real hit when added to veggies or a fresh salad. For lunchboxes, yummy humus dips, pates and unprocessed cheeses add some protein to the mix. Throw in some veggie crudités and a delicious fresh fruit and you will be set up for the day. Cheeses like modified cheese and Edam cheese are gentle in flavour and loved by most children. For those who have dairy allergies, add some drained chickpeas and beans for extra protein instead. Olives, which are high in unsaturated fats, will keep you fuller for longer and add those booster carries for fussy eaters. Don't forget the treats! Halva is a delicous Mediterranean delicacy. Packed with protein and calories, a small piece goes a long way to quietening that sweet tooth. Try out different flavours, such as vanilla or chocolate. (See page 6 for more lunchbox ideas.)
Decorate with pallets & glass jars Pallets are one of the biggest trends in upcycling materials for décor purposes. The creative possibilities of creating beautiful pieces with pallets are almost endless, not to mention budget friendly. Get into the habit of looking at pallets and other materials with new eyes. When one goes on a site like Pinterest, one often wonders ‘why didn’t I think of that?’. Very simple ideas are very effective, as can be seen in these few samples of using pallets and things from nature, like wild flowers and sea sand. These things cost nothing and add a rustic, down-to-earth feeling to any home.

7 compelling reasons why children should exercise
You exercise regularly because you want to enjoy the benefits of exercise. Exercise offers the same benefits to your children. Here are seven of the most important benefits.
4 to 8 March 2016
National School Health Week Use these tips to help your kids keep healthy at school.
1. Exercise helps children maintain a healthy weight Childhood obesity is becoming one of the biggest health issues facing our generation. And since obesity is a direct trigger for chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension, it’s crucial for children to maintain a healthy weight.
Exercise builds strong muscles and bones The human body builds its bones during childhood (before the teen years). That means childhood is the optimal time to build bone density through exercise (especially body weight exercise). Strong muscles aren’t just something adults should have! Kids benefit from having strong muscles too – they’re less likely to suffer injuries while they conquer the playground.
Exercise boosts mood and improves concentration Kids need to be able to concentrate to learn. And they learn better and learn more when they’re happy. Exercise causes the body to release endorphins – natural happy hormones and tranquilisers. Not only do these leave kids feeling happier, it also settles their energy levels, making it easier for them to concentrate. If your kid can concentrate well, he’s more likely to perform better at school.
Exercise boosts self-image and self-esteem When you engage in exercise, you feel stronger, faster, fitter and leaner. This makes you feel more selfconfident. Kids also feel that way after exercise.
Exercise in the form of team sports improves social skills Team sports teach kids how to socialise and communicate. These improve interpersonal skills, which a kid will need – and rely on – for life!
Exercise helps kids sleep better (and sleep longer) Children need sleep – their brains are developing fast. But there’s evidence that this development only happens when kids sleep. So sleep deprivation is, quite literally, bad for a kid’s brain. Exercise provides the ideal release for kids’ energy, allowing the child to sleep well thereafter.
Exercise improves motor coordination and skills Through exercise, children refine and improve their motor skills and their coordination. This makes them better able to perform all sorts of tasks throughout life. So sign your kid up for a team sport and make sure you make time to play with your kids (skip, hop, jump and race!). The benefits are powerful and long-lasting. Source: http://www.trifocusfitnessacademy.co.za/article_detail
A healthy lunchbox
Growing youngsters need a healthy snack for the busy days they face at school. Remember that a balanced lunchbox will not only provide children with the energy they need, but it will also keep them healthy and happy.
Active kids
2.
Children need to move to develop well. Most children love to move naturally, but encourage your child to move for fun. It will boost their brains and also help them to sleep better to revive their energies.
3.
Non-toxic stationery
When purchasing stationery like crayons, pens and glue, make sure that the products are non-toxic. This will prevent any harm to your children. Always buy safety scissors that may prevent injury to your child and their friends.
Emergency numbers
4.
Make sure your kids have access to and know how to use emergency numbers. When there’s an injury at school, they know who to phone to help them.

HEALTH
Lunchbox ideas from food & health celebrities Jamie Oliver’s lunchboxes Making your child’s lunchboxes is the only way you can be sure you know what’s going in them. You can tailor them to suit their tastes and choose good-quality ingredients to make them nutritious. Try to mix things up a bit so they aren’t eating the same old thing every day. Keep the ingredients fresh, the flavours exciting, and make different options throughout the week to keep things interesting. For a well-balanced meal that will keep you going all day, aim for a good mix of protein and carbohydrates with plenty of fruit and vegetables. Savoury A flask of home-made soup with a hunk of nice bread and a small wedge of tasty cheese, slices of home-made pizza, quiche or frittata, or pittas stuffed with mini home-made kebabs.
Sweet A fresh fruit salad, a tablespoon of dried fruit, stewed fruit and natural yoghurt, a slice of fruit bread, fresh fruit skewers, oaty biscuits, home-made flapjacks, or granola bars packed with lots of lovely nuts and seeds. Drinks Home-made fruit smoothies, water with a wedge of fresh lemon or lime, milk, or freshly squeezed fruit juice mixed with sparkling water. Pop a carton of 100% unsweetened fruit juice in the freezer overnight. Pack it in your child’s lunchbox first thing and by lunchtime they will have a lovely slushy cold drink. Jamie Oliver is an English celebrity chef, restaurateur and media personality known for his food-focused television shows and cookbooks, and more recently his global campaign for better food education, especially in schools and school cafeterias and tuck shops. Patrick Holford’s lunchboxes A well-planned lunchbox will energise your child, both physically and mentally. Carbohydrate-containing foods with a lower glycemic index (GI) are the foods that supply a steady source of energy. Adding lean protein (the size of the palm) and a little fat (such as cottage cheese) helps to prolong steady energy release. Adding veggies and/or fruit contributes to the vitamin content. Round off the lunchbox with a tub of plain live yoghurt and a bottle of water. Puree vegetables such as leftover roasted vegetables to use as a sandwich spread.

PAUL ROOS GIMNASIUM (t) 021 887 0017 (e) info@prg.wcape.school.za
The Cartel, gaan 2016 niks minder as GEES wees nie.

Somerset College Cambridge students obtain outstanding results Somerset College introduced the Cambridge Programme in 2015, enrolling six students into the first AS-level class. These students wrote their Cambridge examinations in October 2015 at the end of the first year of a two year A-level course. The results of the October 2015 examinations were released in January 2016 and we are very pleased to announce that our students obtained excellent results. Students are required to complete a minimum of five subjects to complete their AS-level qualification. Dario Trinchero obtained 100% for Mathematics and scored over 90% in four other subjects, namely Physics, Chemstry, Computer Science and Afrikaans. Robert Harris and Charles Fauël also excelled with four A symbols, including 99% and 97% for Mathematics respectively. Front: Robert Harris, Alex Peter and Roark Mudde. Back: Layla Ferguson, Dario Trinchero, Charles Fauël and Mr Gareth Tucker.
Alex Peter also did very well, scoring three A symbols including 88% for Mathematics. Roarke Mudde impressed with some very pleasing results, including an A for Mathematics. “We congratulate all our Cambridge students and wish them well as they embark on the second year of their A-level qualification,” remarked Mr Gareth Tucker, the Director of the Somerset College Cambridge Programme. These students’ results at the end of this year will combine with those they have just received to give an overall A-level qualification. This year the AS-level class has 16 students, many of whom are international students joining the College from countries from across the world. There are students from Tanzania, Mozambique, China, England and Singapore. “We trust that they will follow in the footsteps of our Cambridge “pioneers” and aim at achieving their very best,” said Mr Tucker.

Skryf is seker haar grootste passie. Haar gunsteling kossoort is braaivleis. Persoonlike doelwitte is beter as kompetisie.
