This month, we would like you to meet team member Ryno Wolfaardt, who makes sure that we get the news from our AWSUM schools to you every month. AWSUM Celebrity Interview
Elvis Blue became an overnight sensation when he won Idols in 2010. The hugely popular singersongwriter chatted to us about his journey, things he loves, and what the future holds. Q: Tell us about your early journey as a musician. A: During my high school years at Linden High, I started busking when I was about 16 around Rosebank, at parking lots and in malls. I already wrote my own songs, so I had a great opportunity to play them to my ‘audiences’, as well as many other favourite and popular songs. I took a gap year after school, and spent time as a street musician in Europe, mostly in Scotland and Ireland. I then studied contemporary music at Allenby Campus in Joburg and also had my own music school. In my twenties, I released five albums, one of which was nominated for a SAMA. Q: What made you enter Idols? A: In my thirties, I started getting really frustrated with my lack of commercial success, and decided to enter Idols. As they say, the rest is history. I have been on a truly extraordinary and humbling journey ever since winning Idols. Q: How did it happen that you split your Idols prize money? A: Lloyd (Cele, who came second) realised that we both had R250 000 guaranteed when we were the final two standing. A few people joked throughout the day of the final that we should just split the money, and we started taking the idea seriously. Our decision to split the prize money, no matter who
Page 2
won, simply indicated our special friendship and a really cool journey we had together on Idols. Q: Who are your greatest music role models? A: Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon. I also like pop stuff, Coldplay, and our ‘own’ special stars, such as Mango Groove and Johnny Clegg. Q: Favourite songs? A: Graceland, by Paul Simon. Where the Streets have no Names, U2. Secret Garden, Bruce Springsteen. Q: Career highlights? A: Opening for Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi! Also winning the SAMAs and other awards has been a huge honour. Q: What does the future hold for Elvis Blue? A: I am very lucky that I have a strong brand, with which I can explore different roads on my journey. I strive to be authentic in my music, to be honest and real and raw. More songs, in English and Afrikaans! Q: What do you do when you’re not making music? A: I love to surf at Victoria Bay, watch sports on TV, hang at my home with my wonderful wife and two adorable young daugthers, Jua and Lila. Six-year-old Lila is getting her first quitar today – she has been begging forever, so it is a quite a big event!

How to handle postbeanie meltdown
Sock it to them
Beanies, hoods and snoods are fun and fashionable when you’re all bundled up but you’ve probably hit this little hassle when you pull them off – yup, the dreaded hat head. Squashed and sweaty, matted and mussy, flattened and frizzy, your hair just looks sad. That goes for dudes as well. So although these mad hatters look on freek, here’s how to do damage control. 1. Pick a roomy slouchy knit beanie that isn’t too tight—this will prevent your hair from flat-lining on your scalp and it will cut down on those forehead crease lines.
Over-the-knee socks or knee-his are just so trendy now but you don’t want to look like a schoolgirl! So here’s how to change up the look and give it some grown-up sass.
@ High boots with a hint of sock peaking out the top is a really punchy look. Go for statement-making bright plain or patterned socks.
ing • Wearing hair fluffed out fram n your face, is the first prize whe ie. covering your head with a bean Slouchy bobble beanie, R79.99, Pick n Pay Clothing,
Knee-hi sox, R69.99 for double pack, Pick n Pay Clothing. Over-the-knee sox, R 59.99, The FIX.
@ They’re so gorg worn with a short straight or flippy skirt and an oversized chunky sweater.
TREND ALERT! Go for BADASS BADGES. Pin and sew on badges and patches, R39.99 per pack, Mr Price. Customise your jeans and jackets with patches, buttons and badges. It’s a big revival of the 70’s patched and pinned denim obsession that lets you make a statement with funky insignia.
Cara Deleveigne works her thigh-high sox with super model chutzpah.
@ Hairstyle inspo for head huggers
What to wea r now
@Wear sheer tights underneath – it gives you extra warmth but still looks cute. It’s also the best way to show off your pins in winter when you want to wear shorts and ankle boots.
2. Build up volume and body before you beanie up. Apply dry shampoo like Baptiste Dry Shampoo with a hint of colour, R84.95 or COLAB Dry Shampoo Extreme Volume, R99.95 to the roots, then gently backcomb them to create some extra volume. They also come in handy mini sizes for your handbag or pocket. 3. Another great trick for after- hat horrors --- turn your head upside down and use your fingers to fluff up your hair at the roots. You can also work in a spritz of Garnier Ultimate Blends Honey Treasures Serum, R69.95, to tame any frizzies and add lively shine.

BEANIES FOR THE BOYZ David Beckham made the beanie famous and stylish and now it’s a headgear icon. The most wearble option for guys is the Slouchy Beanie worn as far back as possible --- a great laid back look that’s warm and with-it. Beanies with writing and bobbles are top of the list. Script beanies R59.99 each, Mr Price. Unisex bobble beanie, R79.99, Pick n Pay Clothing.
Get this! Here’s how to wear your ‘tude on your sleeve! Zhoosh up last year’s parka with a mass of patches and badges and you’re hot on trend!
It’s a snood in da hood!
• If your hair is long enough, go for a basic three-strand braid with messy bits pulled out --- it looks so flirty peeking out from under a beanie. • If you prefer your hair out of the way, then simply twist it into a soft low bun with wispy bits for an undone look.
You just gotta love Harry Styles in his blue beanie and check out those curls, girls.
Sometimes called an eternity scarf, a snood can be worn like a collar, a hood, a normal scarf or in a layered way. It’s very versatile and adds a bit of flash to any look. A faux fur snood worn like a collar is so foxy and fabulous. Maroon faux fur snood, R79.99, The FIX. Bad hair day? Wear your snood like a hood -just loop it over your head and neck --- cosy and cute! kidding!! Goat cheese has been made for thousands of years, and was probably one of the earliest made dairy products. Goats milk is a wonderful substitute for cow’s milk for children that have a low tolerance to cow’s milk, well not only children, adults as well.
So it’s worth considering goats milk or cheese , especially if you’re sensitive to lactose from cow’s milk , and because goat cheese contains less lactose than cheese made from cow’s milk, it is typically well tolerated by those with lactose intolerance. The reason goats milk and cheese is easier to digest is because the fat globules are smaller, resembling those of human milk, and the curd is softer than cow milk curd, but you don’t have to have an intolerance to enjoy the wonderful flavour of goats cheese, it is wonderful in sweet and savoury dishes, it love to be in the company of figs, nuts and honey, and really adores to be paired with pears and beetroot.

Health & Wellbeing Parents most at risk for colds & flu Young children are a reservoir of germs and if they’re at crèche, school or anyplace else where they are around other children, they’re in a super-virus environment, which makes them the perfect vectors for illness and for passing viruses around. Kids hug, touch and cough all over each other. They chew on toys and as a result share their saliva, and then parents hug, kiss and cuddle them. It’s no wonder that the average parent catches a cold more compared to those without children. Families with two, three or four children have some type of virus present in their household just under 60% of the time, whereas childless households were only infected with viruses three to four weeks of the year. Each additional child in a household increases a family member’s risk of falling ill. Parents who live with small children are 1.5 times more likely to be sick since children under the age of five tend to have at least one virus present in their mucus 50% of the time. It is imperative that those at risk, especially parents of younger children, give their immune systems a boost, whilst adequately protecting themselves from sources of cross-infection. But for a parent with little ones, it’s
difficult to take care of yourself when you’re ill, since you have to take care of everyone else. This makes the recovery process so much harder (and unpleasant). The best and most practical way of protecting yourself (and your family), is to practice proper handwashing techniques and to do so often. This could reduce the chances of catching your child’s cold by 30 to 50%. Another way is to stay out of waiting rooms in doctor’s offices, emergency rooms and the shops, and to avoid public transport as much as possible. Also use your judgement about your own situation. If you are pregnant and have had several bouts of flu or have a newborn, you may actually want to wear a mask. Besides eating your greens, getting enough sleep is another critical factor in fighting off colds and flu. Research tells us that people who sleep six hours or less a night are four times more likely to catch a cold when exposed to a virus, compared to those who get in more than seven hours a night. Most parents probably don’t get enough Zs, but it’s vital to our wellbeing, so try to carefully plan your day to ensure enough time is spent in slumber land.
The biggest risk factor for catching the common cold is having children under the age 12. Parents fall ill almost twice as much as anyone else.
Keeping a clean and dust-free house is equally important. It might also be worth getting an air filter to clean and purify the air in your home, especially if you’ve experienced wave after wave of illness in your household. In truth, there is no cure for the common cold or flu, but time-deprived parents may benefit from supplements that can boost their immune system. If you do catch your child’s cold, there is an upside to all of this shared illness business: Once a child starts to develop a functioning immune system, at about six months, then the exposure to general viruses and germs isn’t necessarily a bad thing since it helps build and stimulate the immune system. It’s important to remember that a child’s immune system will only be fully developed between 12 to 14 years of age, when they finally reach adult levels of antibody formation, so you may be in for a tough few years, but as the children grow up it will help them fight other infections and stay healthier in the long run.
Bestmed’s You’ve Got the Power Campaign is back! Does your school have the power to take on the challenge? Launched last year with 63 schools across the country, the ‘You’ve Got the Power Campaign’ has now expanded. This year, healthy living will be demonstrated not only by learners, but their families too. This campaign will run from 1 to 31 August. Sasja la Grange, Marketing and Communications Manager at Bestmed, says, “Following on the success of last year’s pilot campaign, we have once again identified 63 schools across the country that will be participating in this year’s campaign. The teams are expected to showcase the benefits of healthy living by creating unique, cool and fun music videos. “The campaign is both educational and rewarding. We have awesome prizes up for winners, and these include cash prizes for runners-up and other spot prizes. The overall winning school will, over and above its cash prize, be treated to a live concert by The Voice SA finalists.” The ‘You’ve Got the Power Campaign’ challenge underpins Bestmed’s focus on preventative healthcare,
Page 6

which is validated by its wellness pillars of Be Active, Be Safe, Be Nutri-wise, Be Fin-fit and Be Happy. The campaign challenge inspires scholars and their families to incorporate these pillars into their daily lives, and demonstrate it in the music videos. “Who says you cannot be healthy and have fun? We received encouraging feedback from last year’s launch campaign where schools learnt quite a bit about healthy lifestyle activities and enjoyed the process. We are committed to continue educating children about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle in all possible ways we can,” adds la Grange. In last year’s challenge, the schools created a music video based on Jeremy Loops’s songs and this year the music videos will be based on an upbeat song composed by Bestmed. The children will be able to sing or lip sync the song. The videos can include choreography and fun dance moves that are cool, energetic and happy. With the aim of encouraging children to not only
practise healthy lifestyle activities at school but also at home, this year Bestmed is including families to take part in the challenge. La Grange cites, “Students spend their time both at school and at home therefore we would like them to continue practising their healthy lifestyle activities in all aspects of their lives. We also want to encourage their families to do the same.” “We look forward to receiving awesome music videos, and good luck to everyone,” she concludes. You’ve Got the Power Challenge To become part of the challenge, visit www.ygtp. co.za for more information. Each school is required to create a music video based on Bestmed’s song and demonstrate how healthy living can make for a better life within the school and family context. Teachers and families can also participate in the video, as the aim is for the whole school to have fun. Once the video is completed, it can be uploaded on the site before the competition closes on 31 August 2016. Bestmed will announce the winners on 23 September 2016.

HOTTENTOTS-HOLLAND HIGH SCHOOL HHH Drummies are the National Runner-ups
Hottentots-Holland High School has proudly stood the test of time with thirty seven years of drummies as its major sport. Along with the The Settlers, HHH, as they are affectionately known, are the oldest team in both the WP and Boland regions. Aside from participation in the WP and SA championships where they have always had good results, HHH marches regularly at the V&A Waterfront passenger port both on and off the liners and participates in the annual Gymnastrada run by the Western Cape Education Department. Camps and sleepovers are a tradition held dear to the team as although the sporting code of drummies is the first love, the real work is the ‘heart’ work – making friends, memories and building character. Under the guidance of mother figure and ex-SA gymnast, Karin Verster, although retired, HHH Drummies has been able to raise many young women who have achieved success in careers after school. Karin started drummies at HH as a passionate teacher and has seen the nationwide growth and development of the sport. Her passion is formations and making sure the girls look their best. Joining her is English teacher and theatre director, Darryl Spijkers, who has been training HH for the past four years but started helping since 2003. He brings with him experience from working in KZN as coach of successful teams, Amanzimtoti and Doon Heights, and his passion is music, projection and producing top quality leaders . The team is completed by ex-HH leader, Zurika McKenzie, who also teaches at a local primary school. As a WP and SA drummie, Zurika has been training for eight years and has a passion for precision and timing.
