AWSUMCelebrity Interview

KAHN & The Parlotones

Paul, Kahn, Glenn and Neil

The Parlotones is one of South Africa’s most loved and successful bands, with multi-platinum status and major international acclaim and fans. Lead singer and songwriter Kahn Morbee’s lyrics focus on personal themes of love and everyday life, paired with catchy melodies that engage their audience. Formed in 1998, the group consists of Kahn (vocals and rhythm guitar), Paul Hodgson (lead guitar), Glenn Hodgson (bass guitar, keyboards and backing vocals) and Neil Pauw (drums and percussion). AWSUM News caught up with Kahn and the band whilst on tour with ‘The Stories Behind the Songs’.

Q: Many of your lyrics have multiple layers of meaning. Tell us about the new show, the title of which is very intriguing. A: ‘The Stories Behind the Songs’ tour is part of a book that we are working on, in which each band member shares a memory of every single album we have done from the start. The book will be in coffee table format, with loads of photos and wonderful stories. Q: What was the inspiration for the concept of the book and the show? A: Creating music that resonates with our fans is something that we are very proud of and we are looking forward to sharing the method behind our madness when it comes to the processes and ideas behind constructing each and every song, be it the different paths in life we have travelled, to the experiences and adventures. We are enjoying sharing these stories with our fans across the country. Q: Kahn, how did your iconic show make-up happen? A: A couple of years ago we did a show at a cosmopolitan party and we played with eight other bands. We wanted to stand out and be remembered, so I applied the make-up and it has been a hit ever since.

Q: How did The Parlotones happen? A: We started jamming as a garage band in 1998. We can’t believe that we have been jamming together for 16 years already! We feel like family members. Q: Kahn, you have embarked on a solo career as well. How did that come about? A: I thought it was time to start working on my own unique sound, but I’m still involved with The Parlotones, before people start worrying. I am known only as Kahn for my solo performances and am pursuing a more introspective, personal approach to my craft. Q: What were some highlights in the journey of The Parlotones? A: One of our favourite memories of the ‘early days’ was when the band performed at the Coca-Cola Dome in 2009. We became the first South African band to sell out at the Dome that year with about 13 000 fans who attended that show. Another proud moment was when we performed at the opening concert of the 2010 FIFA World Cup with famous artists like The Black Eyed Peas and Shakira.

A powerful developmental tool for young people in South Africa since 1983, the President’s Award has proven itself in SA and has played a big role in bringing about change in the lives of over 130000 young people in this country to date. Two of these young people are Parel Valleiers, Megan Lane and Shannon Barry. PV supports this programme’s main goal of teaching young people selfdevelopment, as this leads to selfempowerment. It should also be noted that this award is a proud member of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Association, as part of a family of over 140 countries that drives the programme around the world.

SOMERSET COLLEGE

(t) 021 842 8000 (e) admissions@somcol.co.za

Somerset College Rowers on The Up-And-Up On the back of a fantastic season which saw Somerset College rowers excel, six Somerset College rowers trialled and were selected to represent Western Cape Rowing and the province at the upcoming South African National Rowing Championships in East London at the end of April. This is the first time ever that Somerset College has had such a large female contingent in the provincial squad with Celina Gruber, Aninke Burger, Kelsey Greeff and Erin Williams being selected and awarded provincial colours for the first time. With Katherine Williams (second consecutive year) and Amber Ryan (third consecutive year) both agreeing that this experience is one that has shaped their positive results and dominant form.

Netball achiever Ashley van der Merwe (Grade 12) has been selected to play for the Cape Town Federation U21A Netball Team (previously referred to as the Western Province Netball Team).

Somerset College wins the Ashes against Parel Vallei The Ashes have been played between Somerset College and Parel Vallei since 1999. Somerset College have been lucky to dominate the game for the last 14 years. After a difficult season, the College 1st team was up for the challenge posed by PV. Sam Henderson won the toss and decided to bowl. PV batsmen got started but none of them managed to keep ahead, with some accurate bowling, good catching and ground fielding from the College players. PV were bowled out for 106 with Raggett, Henderson and Dave taking two wickets each and Madhombiro taking three wickets. College made a solid start but lost two quick wickets before the end of play on Day 1. Day 2 started well for College with Whaits and Henderson batting through the first session to put College in a strong position. Whaits 43, Henderson 56, and Madhombiro with 50 took College to a respectable first innings lead after Raggett and Venter had put on 44 for the last wicket. College scored 252 all out. PV needing 146 to make College bat again, and were immediately under pressure with an excellent accurate opening spell of bowling from Henderson and Ransom. With PV losing 3 early wickets they were in a difficult position. Madhombiro then took charge and bowled an excellent spell of off-spin taking 5 wickets for 9 runs in 7 overs. PV were bowled out for 91.
