Neil Powell

Johannes Daniel Powell is one of South Africa's most successful rugby coaches in the last ten years. Better known as Neil, he is an excellent example of what a coach should have to create a winning culture and healthy coaching environment.

Powell took over from previous Springbok Sevens head coach, Paul Treu, right before the 2013 edition of the South African leg of the World Sevens Series. Despite his many accolades, the former Free Cheetahs star is first and foremost a family man before a World Sevens Series winning coach. "My family is very important to me," Powell told Awsum News in an exclusive interview. "My wife and kids always come first and I try to maintain the balance between my hectic coaching and personal life, by not bringing work home." The former scrumhalf firmly believes in prioritising his time spent with his family when he gets home in the evening, a philosophy not often heard of in the world of professional rugby. This is by no means an excuse for him to shut himself off completely, but, this, he says is how he and his family maintains a healthy environment at home. "I try not to take work home, but if I do, I won't work while my family is awake, that way I get to spend more time with them. I would rather get up around 4 or 5 am if I need to get some work done. I am a firm believer that I need to turn in for the night the same time my family does. An exception would be made for maybe one night of the week, but most of the time I try to avoid working at home." Under his guidance, the Blitzboks have secured eleven tournament wins, a bronze Olympic medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, a Commonwealth Gold medal in 2014 in Scotland and recently the 2016/17 HSBC World Sevens Series title. Powell has not only developed and created a winning culture, but also a warm family-like environment whereby his players have grown into world-class players. The hectic traveling and working schedule of a world-class professional coach does take its toll on quality time away from his family. It isn't always all glitz and glamour like the public perceives it to be. Coach Neil and his family have put a few rules in place to balance the scales. One of these rules is that they breakaway for at least two days after he has returned from traveling with the Springbok Sevens squad. "There is always someone that wants to see you or some function that our friends want us to go to, but because I travel for up to two and half weeks at a time, I take my family away, after returning from tour, for a couple of days. Just me, my wife and our kids. I try to make up for the time I spend away from home."

Keeping the Passion Burning

The Blitzbok head coach, however, is not naive to think that he can cut himself completely from the entire sporting world when he gets home to Casa del Powell, but they remain intentional to have dad and hubby's work not influence the family time during the periods that he isn't on tour. "It is difficult, especially these days with social media and all the various media platforms to switch yourself off completely from the world, but I will rather watch some soccer with my kids than rugby. We also have a rule in the house in that we eat at the table and not in front of the television. It just helps to build a healthier and more grounded family environment." This philosophy is somewhat evident in the Blitzboks family, with coach Powell being the father-figure for the Blitzboks it testifies to a successful, healthy and warm environment. Touring life can be daunting, not only on the players but on the coaches as well. It can become very lonely, but Powell believes the manner in which he conducts himself, runs his household and family allows him to remain motivated and inspired. "It does get very lonely on tour, yes," Powell added when asked if he misses home a lot while finding himself in some of the world's major cities. "I often find myself looking at a photo of my family and telling myself that what I do is for them. "I also have a winning drive within myself, it's not that I enjoy winning, I just don't like losing. I admit I am a bad loser," Powell said candidly. The future of Springbok Sevens rugby is in good hands, with Powell and his charges set to prepare for the Rugby World Cup Sevens as well as the Commonwealth Games, both set to take place later this year. The Stellenbosch based coach has not only seemingly created a winning culture and high-performance environment. but he remains passionate about Springbok Rugby, the latter being one of his biggest drives in creating a world-class team.

"I have an immense passion for Springbok rugby as a whole and will always keep this passion burning."

FASHION

Slay the last days of summer with some bling. Pepe Sofianos says hit refresh in these straight fire fashion finds.

YOU ARE S O FETCH!

DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN USE DRY SHAMPOO OVERNIGHT TO… » GIRLS «

Spray dry shampoo on hair before you go to bed and either braid or wrap your hair loosely in a bun. You’ll wake up with amazing real bed head texture and loads of volume.

» GUYS «

If your sneakers are a bit ripe with sweat, spray some dry shampoo in them and leave them overnight to soak up all that no-no stuff. They’ll smell sweet in the AM.

R&B star Chris Brown is a hoodie fan of note and here he looks the bomb in a muscle hoodie.

Is your whole family focused on saving water? Well dry shampoo is a game changer. It’s moved up from being one of those “just in case” items to VIP status. You don’t have to wash your hair every day and in fact, you can’t because of the water restrictions. Dry shampoo is a perfect refresher between washes and perks your hair up without using a single drop of water. One quick burst redefines hair and removes any excess grease. Your hair feels and looks really clean and fresh and you get added body and texture. What’s not to like? Top hairstylists to the stars swear by dry shampoo as the perfect texturiser. Just spray it through your finished style or after a fresh blow out and it will add volume and give your hair that edgy look. Dry shampoos come in a range of different formulations, fragrances and colours and work for all hair types.

As always, Kendall Jenner has The Look all sorted before anyone else. Check out her on fleek rose gold bootees.

TAME THOSE TATS!

We just can’t get enough of these flash tattoos! Temporary metallic tats are the hottest face and body accessory ever. Temp tats, or transfers, are nothing new, but recently the celebs have been loving them, and showing off new creative ways to wear them. Just press them on and wash them off. Dress up any look without having to wear jewellery and you can rock them at the pool, beach, party time or when you’re hanging out with your squad. They’re totes snatched. Metallic tattoos have also been spotted at festivals and out on the town, even on the Red Carpet. These aren’t just for teens. Hey, Mom, you can wear them too!

HOODWINKED When it comes to off-duty dressing, the hoodie will forever be serious street wear. Enter the sleeveless or muscle hoodie and you’ve got even more of a choice. Borrowed from the world of boxing and workouts, it’s a must-have. Get yourself kitted out with a couple of light muscle hoodies --- wear them solo, over a T and layered over your denim jacket later in the year. Sharp.

I’M LOVING… ... fun flash metallic tattoos that mean you can be super-woke without the hassle of commitment and you can go easy on the folks, because they just lift off!

I love Potatoes with a Passion!

The poor potato has been banned, demonized and is now an outcast, and the low-carb craze has given it a bad reputation, well not in my book, this delicious vegetable is one of my favourite starches and I just can’t turn my back on it. Potatoes are so versatile, you can smash them, mash them, squish and squash them, bake and roast them, boil and fry them, use them in cakes and breads. The humble potato is an edible tuber that was first cultivated in the Andes and in the early 16th century. Spanish explorers brought the potato back to Europe from their South American expeditions and back then it was thought to be completely inedible and even poisonous, well it is not inedible or poisonous, it is packed with a variety of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that ward off disease and benefit human health. Did you know… that the potato is a relative of tobacco and the tomato. Potato actually comes from the Spanish world patata, potatoes have more potassium than bananas, potatoes became the first food to grow in space when potato plants were taken aboard the space shuttle Columbia in 1995, Australians eat about 60kg of potatoes per person each year. Apparently humans can survive on a diet of just potatoes, and milk or butter, which contain Vitamin A and D, the only vitamins missing from the humble spud. One medium potato contains 45 percent of the daily recommended amount of vitamin C. Potatoes also contain potassium, B6, fiber and numerous other vitamins and minerals. Remember potatoes exposed to bright light develop green patches and this green skin contains the toxin ‘solanine’ which can cause cramps, headache, diarrhoea, and fever, so don’t eat the green skin, you can cut it away and that will make the rest of the potato safe to eat. Plastic bags won’t allow potatoes to breathe, and will shorten their shelf life considerably, so remove them from their plastic bag, if they came in one and keep them in a cool dark place.

Let’s Cook!

• Potato wedges with hot piquanté pepper relish • Scrub 6 large potatoes. • Cut into wedges and toss with olive oil, Peppadew® hot piquanté pepper relish, honey, thyme leaves and crushed garlic. • Season generously with salt and pepper. • Roast at 180 c until golden - about 45 minutes. • Serve with bowls of sour cream and guacamole.

The Perfect Baked potato

• 1 potato per person and two for me • Now scrub your potatoes until they are very clean. Then, make sure that they are very dry. • Rub olive oil all over the potatoes and then coat them in salt. • Prick the potatoes all over to allow air to escape as they bake, place onto a baking tray and them till the skins are crisp and the flesh gives when they are pressed. • Remove and split and fill with lots of yummy salted butter.

The Grade 4s enjoyed an outdoor Mathematics lesson where they had to measure how far their respective snails travelled in the races. Definitely the best Maths lesson ever!

OUDE LIBERTAS Amphitheatre Wed 7th - Sat 10th March, 2018

Tickets: R190 – R220 Book at COMPUTICKET

The CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET returns to the unique OUDE LIBERTAS Amphitheatre in Stellenbosch in March 2018, after a period of 16 years. The ageless story of Romeo and Juliet resounds in the new choreography of Robin van Wyk, created especially for the romantic Maynardville Open-Air Theatre in 2017. Told in timeless classical style, this romantic ballet transports the viewer into a realm of family dispute with a tragic, but uplifting conclusion. The CAPE TOWN CITY BALLET’s predecessor, the CAPAB Ballet Co, danced the version of this ballet by Frank Staff, reworked by Veronica Paeper, several times. While the story remains the same, Van Wyk presents his characters in his own unique way. He re-introduces the character of Benvolio, friend of Romeo, as well as Romeo’s first love, Rosalind. Van Wyk uses the incomparable Prokofiev score to enhance his choreography, letting the spectator be swept along in its grandeur. His characters are portrayed by the stars of the CTCB, alongside stars of the past, Janet Lindup, who plays the part of Lady Capulet, Johnny Bovang as Lord Capulet, and guest artist Craig Hedderwick as the Friar.

2018, a historic year for PV Bulldogs Parel Vallei has become a force to be reckoned with in the last few seasons. Head of rugby at the Somerset West school, Thinus Pienaar, has been putting structures in place for the last few years. Pienaar, who is a former U19 & U21 Blue Bull player, specialises in all things attack and backline coaching. Given the challenges that most high school rugby coaches face especially at the beginning of the season when they are competing with the summer sports in regards to a player doing more than one sporting code, Pienaar is confident that the entire Parel Vallei rugby coaching staff will be able to execute the plan. There’s no shortage of qualified and competent coaches at PV. Dean Williams and Angelo Fritz have both been involved at age group provincial level. Williams was part of the WP U13 coaching staff while Fritz was the head coach of the Grant Khomo (U16) WP team. It wasn’t always smooth sailing in the beginning for Pienaar. When he arrived at Parel Vallei rugby wasn’t a major focus for the sporting department. He has since grown the number of rugby teams at the school. “Preparation every year continues to amaze me,” Pienaar added. “In January 2015 I started a pre-season with myself as the only coach and a group of 20 boys. Now, in 2018 we are in excess of 80 players when we start in January/February. Top coaches like Dean Williams is involved with our Under 14 and Angelo Fritz (Grant Khomo Head Coach) at under 19 level,” Pienaar said when asked about the growth and expansion of the coaching staff at Parel Vallei. The Bulldogs’ focus and preparations, for the next few weeks, will shift to the five Parel Vallei teams that will be undertaking tours/ tournaments to various places across the country. The under 14 & 15 teams will feature at the Kwagga Week in George while three teams including the Under 16, Under 19 A & B sides will participate at the Arthur Johnson tournament in Mossel Bay. Both these tournaments are set to take place in March. “In a historic first, the Bulldogs are leaving on five rugby tours including U14A, 15A, 16A, 19B, and U19A outside the Western Cape, in March,” Pienaar hopes that his beloved Bulldogs will be making improvements on some of the learnings from last season. “Every year we improve on areas of concern through adaptation and innovation. Last year we struggled at top tournaments in March because of no match practice, therefore the arrival of St George RC [Chile] later this month and HTS Bellville, in early March, will prepare the boys for battle.” Some key players for Parel Vallei this year will hopefully allow them to grow into a powerhouse school within the South African high school rugby landscape. “The public can expect Parel Vallei to stand their ground against the Premier B schools. The exciting and ‘never say die’ attitude that has defined the Bulldogs is set to continue in 2018. Tauriq Karaan, Minawa Gesha, Ethan Borcherds, Ryan Coetzer, Leonard de Leeuw, Julio Gous, Gethin Joseph and a host of other exciting young players will be hoping to stake a 1st XV claim.” By Lyndon Julius
