AWSUM Celebrity Interview
Suzelle DIY
AWSUM News caught up with sensational YouTube comedy wondergirl, Suzelle DIY, who has just landed her very own slot on Comedy Central – not bad for a poppie with a hectic wannabe accent and an ever-silent best friend! Suzelle DIY’s YouTube channel has more than 48 000 subscribers and picks up 40 000 views on the day a new episode launches.
Q: Congratulations on the latest feather in your cap – your very own slot on Comedy Central. How does it feel to play in the big league now? A: I feel like a million rands. It has been a dream come true to watch myself on TV. Q: Who is Suzelle really? Tell us a bit more about yourself – likes, dislikes, favourite movie, favourite song, favourite book.
Page 2
AWSUM NEWS, MAY 2016
A: I’m just a small town girl with a passion for DIY, braaiing and dinner parties. My movie of the moment is the How To Be Single and my favourite book is How to do Just about Everything by The Reader’s Digest. Q: Why do you think you are so popular? What is your secret to success? A: I think people like that the DIY in my videos is useful, and that sometimes things go wrong. My secret is to keep going no matter what happens! Q: What are your top five DIY tips for women like yourself who like to be glamorous and never get their hands dirty while doing the dirty work A: Right, this is a good one. It’s important to always look your best no matter what you are busy doing. • Wear an apron when you are in the kitchen. • Use safety goggles when you chop onions to stop your eyes from tearing up and smudging your make-up. • Run your nails over a bar of soap before you do the gardening. It will keep the dirt from getting under your nails. • Buy a box of disposable gloves. They are great to use for any DIY project. • I like to cut up plastic packets and lay them down on my work surface to prevent any mess escaping Q: What do you do for fun and relaxation in your leisure time? A: I like to go for a coffee with my best friend, Marianne. I like to watch cooking shows and look for DIY ideas on
the Google. Q: Other celebrities, across a spectrum, like Nataniël, Hellen Zille, Tim Noakes and Jan-Hendrik, want to be associated with you. Why is that? What do they gain? What do you gain? A: I think they are just excited to meet me because they want to soak up some of my creativity. Q: Where do you get your ideas from for your videos? Which episode is your favourite? Why? A: I get my ideas from all sorts of places. I find them on the Google and in magazines. I also get sent a lot of great ideas from my fans. My favourite episode is How to Make a Braai Pie, because that was my first video to go viral. Q: Are you English or Afrikaans? Who are your biggest fans – English or Afrikaans-speaking people? Why do you think is that so? A: I’m Afrikaans, but I like to speak in English in my videos so that the peoples overseas can also enjoy the videos. Shame. I think my fans are a real mix of different cultures. Q: What is the single thing that you enjoy most when creating and crafting a new episode? A: I love filming it with Marianne and my neighbour Hennie. We always have so much fun together. Q What DIY message do you have for our readers (parents of schoolgoing children)? A: Parents, you must teach your kids that their creativity is their number one tool!
FOR THE FOODIES
Roll up, roll up!! I always have a roll or two of frozen pastry in my freezer, you should too, it comes in handy if I want to make a tart or pie at the drop of a hat. I love little jam tarts and when the craving hits me, I make my way to the freezer and pull out a roll of shop bought frozen pastry, wait for it to thaw, roll it out, cut out little rounds and pop them into the hollows of a muffin tin, place a little butter in the base, sprinkle with desiccated coconut and a spoonful of any jam that takes my fancy , pop it into a hot oven, put the kettle on and before you know it I’m munching on jam tarts and sipping tea. The other thing I like to do with a sheet of pastry is fill it and make a roulade. A roulade is a dish of filled rolled meat or pastry, the term roulade originates from the French word "rouler", meaning "to roll". Now what I like about having a sheet of pastry handy is that you can fill it with a million different things and call them, tarts pies and roulades, you can make any of these from scratch or use up left-overs from the night before to make a pie.
Vegetarian puff pastry roulade Ingredients • Olive oil • 200g button mushrooms sliced • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 2 Tbsp. Wellington’s sweet chilli sauce • 1 cup chopped spinach, wilted • 250ml ricotta • 3 tbsp chopped peppadews • ¾ c Cheddar cheese • 1 tsp chopped fresh rosemary • Salt and freshly ground pepper • 1 x 400g Todays puff pastry • 1 egg beaten
Method • Heat the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the mushrooms until lightly browned, stir in the garlic and sweet chilli
sauce, season with salt and pepper and cook for a further 3 minutes until all the moisture has cooked off the mushrooms. • Allow cooling, and then mixing with the remaining filling ingredients, except the spinach. • Roll out the pastry until 2mm thick place the mushroom mixture onto the centre of the pastry and shape into a sausage shape, top with the spinach and then fold the pastry over the filling to make a parcel. Brush with beaten egg. • Lift onto a baking sheet lined with baking paper, this makes it easier to lift off the sheet when cooked. • Bake in a pre-heated 200 deg C oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until golden and crisp. • Serve with large mixed salad © Jenny Morris 2015

Health & Wellbeing Rugby players:
Eat right on training and game days Rugby is a popular sport played all over the World. Those who play in a team typically have their rugby training one or two evenings during the week, with a match on a weekend day. Many players also visit the gym two or three times per week for weight training or cardiovascular fitness work.
Eat right on training Eat right on game day days
Rugby players aim to be fit, strong and well built, whilst maintaining agility and stamina. For optimal performance in rugby training you will need a lot of energy for long lengths of time, so it's essential that you have a well structured nutrition programme not only to provide energy for a training session, but also to provide fuel for recuperation for the next day's exercise. Both energy and protein should be high with the aim to keep body fat at an acceptable level in order to optimise power to weight ratio.
This plan provides adequate fuel for a match. As well as good nutrition on the day itself, it is recommended that you have a higher than normal carbohydrate intake at all meals, after training on the day prior to the match. The plan below provides sufficient levels of all nutrients and sustained slow released low glycaemic carbohydrates to ensure optimal energy throughout a rugby match. It is also important to have good nutrition after the game, to ensure you’re refuelled for training the following week.
The meal plan below is an example for a team rugby player to follow for a typical training day:
Breakfast Large bowl of porridge made with jumbo oats + 200ml skimmed milk + water with a tsp of sugar and raisins if desired or 75g unsweetened muesli + 250ml skimmed milk 250ml fresh fruit juice Tea/coffee 4-5 oatcakes or rye crispbread with low fat soft cheese or 2 slices granary bread with natural peanut butter Banana Drink Early lunch 120g chicken breast or 140g fish 100g basmati rice or 100g wholewheat pasta Medium serving of vegetables / salad Drink water 15 minutes before kick-off 1-2 oatcakes 100ml isotonic drink with 20g additional dextrose Half time 1-2 oatcakes 100ml isotonic drink with 20g additional
Breakfast Large bowl of porridge made with 100g jumbo oats + 250ml skimmed milk + water with a tsp of sugar and raisins if desired or 100g unsweetened muesli + 250ml skimmed milk and/or 2 slices granary bread (toasted) with natural peanut butter 250ml fresh fruit juice Tea/coffee Mid-morning Sandwich made with granary bread + olive oil based spread with lean ham/ chicken or tuna Item of fruit Drink Lunch Sandwich made with granary bread + olive oil based spread with lean ham/ chicken or large mackerel fillet 100g mixed nuts & seeds Mixed salad Low fat, low sugar yoghurt Drink Mid-afternoon
2-3 oatcakes with low fat soft cheese 100g mixed nuts & seeds Item of fruit Drink 45 minutes pre-training *2-3 oatcakes with low fat soft cheese During training Sip water or isotonic drink throughout Immediately post training25g whey protein powder + 25g dextrose in water Evening meal (45 mins later) Lean fillet steak or chicken breast or fish + herbs to taste Boiled new potatoes or basmati rice or dry roasted sweet potatoes Loads of vegetables Low fat, no added sugar yoghurt Drink Mid-Evening 100g cottage cheese / quark / low fat natural yoghurt Banana Small handful mixed nuts & seeds Drink * This includes team rugby training and gym sessions
The meal plan below is an example for a typical weekend rugby match day; if you are playing during the week, adjust the plan appropriately: dextrose Sip water Immediately post match 25g whey protein powder + 25g dextrose in water Main meal (45 minutes later) Lean fillet steak or chicken breast or fish + herbs to taste 6-7 boiled new potatoes or 100g basmati rice or 100g couscous or large dry roasted sweet potato Loads of vegetables Low fat, no added sugar yoghurt Drink Evening snack 2-3 oatcakes with low fat soft cheese 100g mixed nuts & seeds Item of fruit Drink 1 hour pre-bed 100g cottage cheese / quark / low fat natural yoghurt Banana Small handful mixed nuts & seeds Drink
These plans are merely general guidelines, and portion sizes will need to be adapted to suit the player’s daily routine and the match time. Players should eat a variety of different meats/fish, complex carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables every day, and drink plenty of water. Source: http://www.mealplansite.com/sports/rugby-match.aspx
Health & Wellbeing Tips to prevent sport injuries While a sports injury can never be entirely prevented, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of injury. These include warming up properly, using the right equipment, proper technique and the appropriate amount of rest and recovery. Suffering an injury from an exercise or sport can not only be painful and require time off from your sport or training, but it can cause future health niggles down the line. Here are some steps to reduce your risk of a sports injury:
Warm-up properly Failing to properly warm-up your muscles and joints before performing strenuous exercise or a physically demanding sport will almost guarantee an injury. Intense training can predispose some muscles vulnerable to injury through overuse if they’re not adequately warmed-up. Every warm-up session should be at least 10-15 minutes long and
be a balance of stretching and light exercise to encourage blood flow to the muscles to prepare them for the activity to follow. Warming up effectively increases blood flow to the muscles and increasing the flexibility of the muscle fibres, considerably reducing the risk of pulling or straining a muscle. Stretch the Achilles tendon, hamstring, and quadriceps areas and hold the positions. Don’t bounce.
Use the right equipment Depending on the type of sport or exercise you’re participating in, if it comes with protective equipment, use it. Especially if the sport or activity involves physical contact with other
players (rugby/ soccer) or possible contact with objects such as hard balls (cricket/baseball). Some protective equipment includes shin pads, boxing gloves or protective head gear. The right footwear is also important as shoes designed specifically offer certain sports offer specific support to the foot and ankle to prevent twisting and injury. Wearing properly fitting shoes helps provide shock absorption and stability.
Proper technique Regardless of the exercise or sport you’re participating in you need to learn the correct techniques associated with it. Not only to prevent overuse injury but also to get the most out of your exercise by working the right muscles and tendons. Make use of the right qualified experts to assist you and teach you the correct form and technique.
Know your limits Any sport or exercise should push you out your comfort zone and challenge you. But you also need to learn to listen to your body and acknowledge your physical limitations. If you are new to a sport or form of exercise, start out slowly to avoid pulling or straining muscles and give yourself time to build up your stamina and strength gradually. In time your fitness and strength will increase, and then you can push yourself more. Strive for a total body workout of cardiovascular, strength-training, and flexibility exercises.
Rest days are important Daily exercise is an ideal many people strive for, and while it is a good idea to keep moving every day, rest days are just as important as the days you train. Your body cannot function optimally if you exercise intensely every single day and do not give it time to recover. The muscles need to rest and recover. Not only can inadequate rest lead to injury but it can also lead to plateaus. Intense exercise puts a strain on the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, and immune system which puts you at risk for injury and even illness. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a rest day on the couch though – active recovery is always an option.
So use your rest days to do some yoga, go for a hike, a slow jog or a bike ride. Just make sure it’s something lowintensity and different from your usual training.
Pain vs discomfort Pushing through pain is a sure-fire way to get injured and be out of your sport for a long time. You need to learn to listen to your body, know when you’re experiencing discomfort and when your body is in pain. Discomfort during exercise is common, especially in those new to exercise, where they are pushing out of their comfort zones and getting breathless, sweaty and tired. However, actual pain which is signalled by any burning, stabbing or sharp pains is your body’s way of telling you to stop. If you continue and ignore these signals, injury is sure to follow.
Keep hydrated Especially in warm environments or when exercising outside, make sure you remain hydrated or you will be at risk for injury. A dehydrated body can drastically reduce mental and physical fitness and put you at risk for injury.
Cool down adequately Just as important as the warm-up, the cool down after physical exertion is important. Catch your breath and then perform between 5-10 minutes of gentle exercise (walking, light cycling) to allow your heart rate to return to normal. This will also give your body enough time to flush out lactic acid and get the blood flowing with oxygen and nutrients to your tired muscles, which also prevents muscle stiffness. Charismatic choir Our school choirs performed at the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod. It is heartwarming to see that so many of our learners take this cultural activity to heart. The senior choir was one of the biggest choirs to participate in the competition. Our small senior choir and the junior choir also participated.

Rugby-uitslae

Leerkrag soos min by Parel Vallei!
Hockey with HEART! Our boys and girls thrive on the hockey field and put heart and soul into every match they play – and they have the results to prove it! We are proud to announce that 40 Boland hockey players from Parel Vallei will be taking part in inter-provincial tours during the school holiday this June and July. Congratulations to all our hockey stars! We are extremely proud of you.

Xander Kritzinger.

HHH boasts with permaculture garden Hottentots-Holland High School is proud to announce the start of a vegetable garden at school. The school has been attending EduPlant workshops for the past year and a half – an initiative of Food & Trees for Africa. Woolworths, a main sponsor of this programme, participated in a Volunteer Day held at the school on 11 May, and Woolworths’ staff from various branches in the Helderberg basin worked alongside the Eco-club members of the school to create this lovely garden. “The aim of the garden is to teach our learners the skills to live sustainably, to reach out to others through feeding schemes and to also draw people from the community together through volunteer work. Although the start of the garden is a dream come true, the hard work has just begun and we need help from the community. The school would also like to thank Somerset Sand & Stone for sponsoring a digger to remove grass and prepare beds. Without their help, the Volunteer Day would not have been a success.
Drummies in action The HH Drummies are preparing for WP Finals. The won the last small drill competition and the leader, Schene Muller, remains unbeat in Outdoors. The WP Finals take place on 11June and HHH hopes to maintain their title as WP Champions.
