AWSUM Celebrity Interview
Elvis Blue became an overnight sensation when he won Idols in 2010. The hugely popular singersongwriter chatted to us about his journey, things he loves, and what the future holds. Q: Tell us about your early journey as a musician. A: During my high school years at Linden High, I started busking when I was about 16 around Rosebank, at parking lots and in malls. I already wrote my own songs, so I had a great opportunity to play them to my ‘audiences’, as well as many other favourite and popular songs. I took a gap year after school, and spent time as a street musician in Europe, mostly in Scotland and Ireland. I then studied contemporary music at Allenby Campus in Joburg and also had my own music school. In my twenties, I released five albums, one of which was nominated for a SAMA. Q: What made you enter Idols? A: In my thirties, I started getting really frustrated with my lack of commercial success, and decided to enter Idols. As they say, the rest is history. I have been on a truly extraordinary and humbling journey ever since winning Idols. Q: How did it happen that you split your Idols prize money? A: Lloyd (Cele, who came second) realised that we both had R250 000 guaranteed when we were the final two standing. A few people joked throughout the day of the final that we should just split the money, and we started taking the idea seriously. Our decision to split the prize money, no matter who

won, simply indicated our special friendship and a really cool journey we had together on Idols. Q: Who are your greatest music role models? A: Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon. I also like pop stuff, Coldplay, and our ‘own’ special stars, such as Mango Groove and Johnny Clegg. Q: Favourite songs? A: Graceland, by Paul Simon. Where the Streets have no Names, U2. Secret Garden, Bruce Springsteen. Q: Career highlights? A: Opening for Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi! Also winning the SAMAs and other awards has been a huge honour. Q: What does the future hold for Elvis Blue? A: I am very lucky that I have a strong brand, with which I can explore different roads on my journey. I strive to be authentic in my music, to be honest and real and raw. More songs, in English and Afrikaans! Q: What do you do when you’re not making music? A: I love to surf at Victoria Bay, watch sports on TV, hang at my home with my wonderful wife and two adorable young daugthers, Jua and Lila. Six-year-old Lila is getting her first quitar today – she has been begging forever, so it is a quite a big event!
Health & Wellbeing Parents most at risk for colds & flu Young children are a reservoir of germs and if they’re at crèche, school or anyplace else where they are around other children, they’re in a super-virus environment, which makes them the perfect vectors for illness and for passing viruses around. Kids hug, touch and cough all over each other. They chew on toys and as a result share their saliva, and then parents hug, kiss and cuddle them. It’s no wonder that the average parent catches a cold more compared to those without children. Families with two, three or four children have some type of virus present in their household just under 60% of the time, whereas childless households were only infected with viruses three to four weeks of the year. Each additional child in a household increases a family member’s risk of falling ill. Parents who live with small children are 1.5 times more likely to become ill, since children under the age of five tend to have at least one virus present in their mucus 50% of the time. It is imperative that those at risk, especially parents of younger children, give their immune systems a boost, whilst adequately protecting themselves from sources of cross-infection. But for a parent with little ones, it’s
difficult to take care of yourself when you’re ill, since you have to take care of everyone else. This makes the recovery process so much harder (and unpleasant). The best and most practical way of protecting yourself (and your family), is to practise proper handwashing techniques and to do so often. This could reduce the chances of catching your child’s cold by 30 to 50%. Another way is to stay out of waiting rooms in doctor’s offices, emergency rooms and the shops, and to avoid public transport as much as possible. Also use your judgement about your own situation. If you are pregnant and have had several bouts of flu or have a newborn, you may actually want to wear a mask. Besides eating your greens, getting enough sleep is a critical factor in fighting off colds and flu. Research tells us that people who sleep six hours or less a night are four times more likely to catch a cold when exposed to a virus, compared to those who get in more than seven hours a night. Most parents probably don’t get enough Zs, but it’s vital to your wellbeing, so try to carefully plan your day to ensure enough time is spent in slumberland.
The biggest risk factor for parents catching the common cold is having children under the age 12. Parents fall ill almost twice as much as anyone else.
Keeping a clean and dust-free house is equally important. It might also be worth getting an air filter to clean and purify the air in your home, especially if you’ve experienced wave after wave of illness in your household. In truth, there is no cure for the common cold or flu, but time-deprived parents may benefit from supplements that can boost their immune system. If you do catch your child’s cold, there is an upside to all of this shared illness business: once a child starts to develop a functioning immune system, at about six months, the exposure to general viruses and germs isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since it helps build and stimulate the immune system. It’s important to remember that a child’s immune system will only be fully developed between 12 to 14 years of age, when they finally reach adult levels of antibody formation, so you may be in for a tough few years, but as the children grow up, it will help them fight other infections and stay healthier in the long run.
Bestmed’s You’ve Got the Power Campaign is back! Does your school have the power to take on the challenge? Launched last year with 63 schools across the country, the ‘You’ve Got the Power Campaign’ has now expanded. This year, healthy living will be demonstrated not only by learners, but their families too. This campaign will run from 1 to 31 August. Sasja la Grange, Marketing and Communications Manager at Bestmed, says, “Following on the success of last year’s pilot campaign, we have once again identified 63 schools across the country that will be participating in this year’s campaign. The teams are expected to showcase the benefits of healthy living by creating unique, cool and fun music videos. “The campaign is both educational and rewarding. We have awesome prizes up for winners, and these include cash prizes for runners-up and other spot prizes. The overall winning school will, over and above its cash prize, be treated to a live concert by The Voice SA finalists.” The ‘You’ve Got the Power Campaign’ challenge underpins Bestmed’s focus on preventative healthcare,
which is validated by its wellness pillars of Be Active, Be Safe, Be Nutri-wise, Be Fin-fit and Be Happy. The campaign challenge inspires scholars and their families to incorporate these pillars into their daily lives, and demonstrate it in the music videos. “Who says you cannot be healthy and have fun? We received encouraging feedback from last year’s launch campaign where schools learnt quite a bit about healthy lifestyle activities and enjoyed the process. We are committed to continue educating children about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle in all possible ways we can,” adds la Grange. In last year’s challenge, the schools created a music video based on Jeremy Loops’s songs and this year the music videos will be based on an upbeat song composed by Bestmed. The children will be able to sing or lip sync the song. The videos can include choreography and fun dance moves that are cool, energetic and happy. With the aim of encouraging children to not only
practise healthy lifestyle activities at school but also at home, this year Bestmed is including families to take part in the challenge. La Grange cites, “Students spend their time both at school and at home therefore we would like them to continue practising their healthy lifestyle activities in all aspects of their lives. We also want to encourage their families to do the same.” “We look forward to receiving awesome music videos, and good luck to everyone,” she concludes. You’ve Got the Power Challenge To become part of the challenge, visit www.ygtp. co.za for more information. Each school is required to create a music video based on Bestmed’s song and demonstrate how healthy living can make for a better life within the school and family context. Teachers and families can also participate in the video, as the aim is for the whole school to have fun. Once the video is completed, it can be uploaded on the site before the competition closes on 31 August 2016. Bestmed will announce the winners on 23 September 2016.

BRYANSTON PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 011 7061263 (e) newsletter@bryanstonprimary.co.za Bryanston Primary supporting Mandela Day In leading up to Mandela day, Bryanston Primary did some ‘digging around’ to find out how people in our own school are helping to make the world a better place. On the 18th of July 2016, the staff put together a presentation for the school assembly showcasing all the kind things the leaners are doing to help others. They hoped this would encourage more to do the same. Here are some examples of how the Bryanston Primary school community is impacting the lives of others: the U11A netball team donated new takkies to their opposing team from Ebomeni Primary in Ivory Park, who did not have any shoes to play in; the school is raising money for CHOC through Cup4Cansa, and there was a project to donate water to help ease the dire situation for the residents of Senekal during the drought. In addition, the school collected Easter eggs and made sandwiches for underprivileged children, gathered food for an animal shelter, and have an ongoing collection of used car seats to donate to families who do not have any to keep their children safe in their vehicles. For their 67 minutes this year, every child in our school made a postcard with the hash tag #WWMD which stands
for “What Would Mandela Do?” The idea was to use social media and any other means to spread the hash tag, encouraging people to always be kind and thoughtful and do the right thing. The prefects of Bryanston Primary School celebrated Mandela Day early this year. They devoted their 67 minutes to the senior citizens in the Village Retirement Home on 15 June 2016. Residence were entertained with piano playing, poem reading and songs. The prefects enjoyed listening to the tales told by the senior citizens and were amazed by the fact that there are a number of people over the age of 90 in the Home! All residents were treated to hot drinks and delicious eats, which were provided by the prefects’ parents. Each resident also received rusks as a gift to enjoy with their afternoon tea. When time came to say good bye, residents of The Village didn’t want to let them go and prefects were reluctant to leave. This is an annual event and, although the young people are nervous beforehand every year, it is an unforgettable experience which they all enjoy and will remember in years to come.
CRAIGHALL PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 011 788 7223/4 (e) gazette@craighallprimary.co.za Grade 7s Stop Hunger Now Nelson Mandela’s birthday was on 18 July. Each year, the call is out for people everywhere to celebrate his birthday by acting on the idea that each person has the power to change the world. 67 minutes are asked for. Our Grade 7 pupils had an opportunity to offer 4 hours by packing food packs for “Stop Hunger Now”. As a school, we are wanting to establish an intrinsic desire to always look for ways to change the world, not only for 67 minutes on 18 July.

NORTHCLIFF HIGH SCHOOL Euro Tour 2016 On 21 June, 63 students and eight teachers set off from our school on a huge adventure. We were going to expand our horizons and explore some of what the European continent had to offer. Shortly after arriving in London, we headed to the London Dungeons and enjoyed the thrills of the shows which were put on. Next stop was the London Eye – fantastic views over the city of London. Other highlights of the London stop included seeing the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London, a visit to Chelsea Football Stadium, a boat trip to Greenwich and dinner at Jamie Oliver’s restaurant. From London we headed to Paris on the Eurostar – hard to believe we were travelling at 285km/h while travelling 60m under the sea floor! In Paris we were able to explore Montmartre and the Sacre Couer, ride on the Metro then spend a day at Disneyland and Disney Studios. A highlight was a midnight trip up the Eiffel Tower! From Paris we flew into Venice and spent time exploring the wonders of this magical city on water. Next stop was Florence with the wonders of the Uffizi Gallery and the incredible sights of this culture-filled city. Amazing to walk where the finest artists had also

walked. We saw the famous statue of David and took lots of photos. Italian gelato (ice-cream) became a muchenjoyed treat – so good that it often replaced meals for some of the tourists! As we continued through Tuscany, a highlight was a stop at a wine farm where our entire group was split up and given a chance to do a cooking class on the farm – we prepared a four-course meal and sat on the deck enjoying the sunset as we ate what we had just made. Our tour continued to a magical place called Civita di Bagnoregio – an ancient city built entirely on an isolated mountain top. After a strenuous walk to get there we were awestruck at the wonder of the place. Our journey continued to Rome with tours around the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Pantheon. Free time meant that we could go toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain and shop for those important Italian leather items we wanted to take home! Our last stop was the Vatican City, where the enormity of the wealth of treasures was almost beyond belief. The Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica were breath-taking. All too soon it was time to return to Johannesburg. A whirlwind tour, for sure – but packed with memories and experiences that will last a lifetime.
