AWSUM Celebrity Interview Duane Vermeulen Daniel Johannes ‘Duane’ Vermeulen was born on 3 July 1986 and matriculated at Hoërskool Nelspruit. From there on his professional rugby career ran through the Pumas (2005–2007), the Cheetahs (2007–2008) and the Stormers (2009–2015), up to Toulon in France, where he is currently on contract. Duane plays his first of 35 test matches (up to the end of 2015) on 8 September 2012 against Australia. In 2014 he was nominated as one of five players for the IRB Player of the Year award. As the iron man of South African rugby, Duane is respected as a world-class player locally and internationally. AWSUM News caught up with him to find out how life in France is treating him.

1.

Q How do you experience life in France?

5.

A Like any new place, France has its things to adapt to. Language, culture and food are some of the biggest things to get used to.

2.

Q Tell us more about Toulon. A Toulon is a smallish city in the south of France, that had its origins as a military harbour. The city is known today for shipbuilding, fish and wine, and of course also the rugby team. People here are crazy for RC Toulon and it hardly ever happens that our stadium is not packed. V

Hoe vergelyk die rugbystrukture tussen

Q How do the rugby structures between 3. Toulon en die Toulon andStormers? the Stormers compare?

A Both are extremely successful professional units. Because one works with much younger players in South Africa, much more time is spent here on development at club level.

4.

Q How long did it take you to learn to speak French? A I’ll tell you as soon as I’ve mastered it!

Page 2

AWSUM NEWS JUNE 2016

Q Do you manage to braai sometimes in France? A The meat here is top quality and with the sun setting so late, it makes for perfect braai conditions.

6.

Q How do the French differ from South Africans? A I think that South Africans generally adapt quite well to France. The French can sometimes be a bit emotional and carry on about stuff, but for the rest, they are passionate people who love their country and their culture.

7.

Q What do you miss the most about life in South Africa? A One always misses one’s friends and family the most.

8.

Q Do you plan to play in South Africa again in the Super Rugby series? A It is difficult to know exactly what the future holds. For now, I have a job to do for Toulon and goals to achieve. Who knows what lies in wait after that.

FOR THE FOODIES

Sizzling soups Brrr. The cold is finally really here to stay! Temperatures are dropping, socks are getting thicker and you’re suddenly finding you need an extra blanket on your bed at night. Winter is here, and it brings with it more time snuggled up indoors, endless cups of tea and, of course, bowls of steaming soup. There’s no better side for soup than fresh bread, so here’s a round-up of six super soups and the perfect bread sides to accompany them. Cheeky broccoli and cheese

Soup: Broccoli and cheese are a heavenly match, and this is a good way to disguise healthy green vegetables if your family aren’t mad about them. Fry half an onion in a little oil until soft. Add two cups of broccoli, a litre of chicken or vegetable stock and a tin of evaporated milk. Boil until the broccoli is soft, then add a cup of grated cheddar cheese. Blend until smooth. Side: Mix softened butter with grated lemon zest, then spread onto toasted low GI brown bread. Serve with the broccoli soup and enjoy.

whip up this soup for almost nothing. Fry one onion a little oil, then add chopped carrots, celery and courgettes. Add two tablespoons of tomato paste and two cups of vegetable stock to the mixture. Bring to the boil, then add two cups of short pasta (macaroni, penne, fusilli or shells) and cook until the pasta is al dente. Side: To serve with the soup, cut slices of toaster white bread into cubes, sprinkle with olive oil and salt, then roast in the oven until crispy. Sprinkle the homemade croutons into noodle soup just before serving – scrumptious!

Smoky bacon and bean

Creamy mushroom

Soup: The best thing about this soup is that you can make it with items from your kitchen cupboard or freezer. Simply fry a few rashers of chopped bacon until crispy. Add a tin of Italian tomato and onion mix and a tin of butter beans. Side: Make herbed garlic butter by mixing together soft butter, one chopped garlic clove and some dried herbs. Spread this mixture onto slices of low GI white bread and then grill until crispy and golden. Dunk the garlic bread into the soup for a hearty meal that’ll warm anyone up from the inside.

Tummy-filling sweetcorn

Soup: This soup is a great way to use up leftover roast chicken pieces. Fry two chopped potatoes and one onion in a little butter, then add a tin each of creamed sweetcorn and whole kernel corn (drained). Add a can of cream of chicken soup, a dash of milk and any leftover chicken, chopped into small pieces. Side: While the soup bubbles away, toast a few slices of low GI crushed wheat brown bread, top with grated parmesan and grill until the cheese has melted into the bread. Serve the soup when the potatoes are completely soft, with a healthy portion of parmesan toasts.

Hearty veggie noodle

Soup: If you have odds and ends of vegetables in your fridge, you can

Soup: This soup couldn’t be simpler and it works for a laid-back dinner party starter. Fry two punnets of sliced mushrooms, one chopped onion and three cloves of chopped garlic in melted butter until all the mushrooms are brown and tender. Add two cups of fresh cream and a cup of vegetable or chicken stock, simmer for five minutes, then turn off the heat. Side: Cut slices of toaster brown bread into ‘soldiers’, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with brown onion soup powder, and bake until completely crispy. The brown onion soup gives them a salty, savoury flavour. Serve with the hot mushroom soup and top with a dollop of sour cream, if you have some.

Meaty lasagne soup Soup: If your family loves lasagne, they’ll adore this twist on the classic pasta dish. Fry mince with one onion and a chopped carrot until golden brown, then add two tins of chopped tomatoes and simmer. Add two cups of beef stock and a cup of elbow macaroni. Cook until the pasta is soft. Side: Toast three pieces of sliced white bread, then whizz in a blender until a chunky crumb is formed. Fry the crumbs in a little olive oil with some dried herbs, until crispy. Use these crunchy breadcrumbs to top the lasagne soup.

The super 12 tournament is an annual tournament where the best of the best chess teams from different primary schools across the country battle it out. This year the tournament took place at the Groenkloof Campus in Pretoria. The junior team achieved a first place, this being the first time a Fontie team achieved such a distinction. Our senior team achieved tenth place. Laerskool Fontainebleau obtained the over-all second place, which is a great achievement. It is the first time that our school has achieved such a high ranking at the Super 12 Chess championships. The winner of the competition only managed to pip Fonties by one point. Adriaan Mostert, Daniel Voigt and Stiaan Nieuwoudt were each presented with a board prize for winning all their rounds. A lot of these learners receive private coaching and put in long hours of practice. Mrs Heléne Lombard, their school coach, says these learners work very hard. They are always taking part in tournaments, playing chess before and after school, and even during break. They do complex puzzles to help them with problem solving skills.

It was their first speech of the year. We had many interesting speeches on animals such as lions, leopards, hippos, elephants, wolves, warthogs, giraffes, and even a peacock. The speeches were accompanied by visual media and the children were really creative with their posters. Well done to all the Grade Twos ... we cannot wait to see some of you as confident public speakers one day.

ST PETER’S GIRLS PREP SCHOOL (t) 011 367 6631 (e) girlsreception@stpeters.co.za Junior Prep mums and daughters craft morning The Junior Prep ‘Mums & Daughters Craft Morning’ was held on Saturday, 14 May. Despite the chilly autumn morning, it was a very well-supported occasion with mums and their daughters spending special time together. The pairs worked on a project that required them to pool ideas and artistic talent and create a collage on canvas, which then went home to be displayed. The school’s Entertainment Committee organised the event. Each mother-and-daughter pair received a pack on arrival, which contained various materials and the canvas. Brightly coloured tables held different coloured paints which were used in the work of art. A buzz of activity ensued! A wonderful tea was part of the fun. Delicious treats on a laden table with tea, cold drinks and even a glass of champagne for moms who enjoy the bubbly beverage! A very happy and enjoyable morning was had by all.

The children also wrote inspirational messages of hope and remarks relating to the fact that we are all African and about why Africa is special to each of us. The four weaves represented the four elements: the

ST PETER’S COLLEGE (t) 011 807 5315 (e) info@stpeterscollege.co.za Grade 10s head up the mountain Every year, St Peter’s College students go on their annual grade camp. The Grade 10 camp is particularly significant, as they head for the mountains with just their backpacks for a whole week. They learn other skills that we cannot teach in a classroom, sometimes more valuable skills: team work, selfdevelopment, people skills, accepting everyone regardless of their different abilities and realising that everyone has a place and a role to play. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, but they realise that when they work together they become stronger and weaknesses become strengths. The Grade 10 students travelled to the Drakensburg to go on an adventurous journey. This journey involved many challenges, including hiking up a mountain, walking through snow, and encountering many different farm and wild animals such as snakes, goats, vultures and horses. This adventure began on Sunday, 8 May early in the morning with an eight-hour bus trip. Many students were very eager to arrive, but at that time did not know how strenuous this hike was. The Grade was split into eight groups, the first six hiking to the summit and the other two groups hiked to the Middle Berg. All hikers had to carry big hiking bags that contained all our gear for the trip. We also had to carry our food as well as carrying the pots to cook the food in. Hiking to the summit was a different experience entirely. Many students did not know the challenge that this would bring but they pushed through it. The groups that hiked to the summit received all four seasons in a day. The most amazing part about hiking so high was the beautiful views and playing and seeing snow for the first time for some hikers. The Low Berg hikers started their journey walking through the dirt roads and saw how the local people lived. They then hiked up and down steep hills to arrive at the camp sight. The experience was thrilling and drinking from the river water was refreshing. At the end of the hike, the students were absolutely exhausted and sore. It was a breathtaking experience and pictures could not even describe how beautiful everything was. Although we had such an amazing experience and trip, the Grade 10s could not wait to come home to a steaming hot shower and sleep in their own beds.

The Addams Family Shine at Northcliff The last week of May saw Northcliff putting on its annual major production. Every year for the past 36 years, Northcliff High has staged a major musical production – making this one of the longest-standing traditions at the school. 2016 saw us stage The Addams Family – The Musical, a somewhat dark, but hilarious comedy musical. The show played to packed houses every night of its 7-show run at the school. Audiences were wowed by the professional level of this production and the phenomenal acting skills of the cast. Incredibly, two of the lead roles were carried off very convincingly by Grade 9 pupils, Matthew Vey and Tiana de Abreu. This bodes well for future shows at the school. The show was produced and directed by Mr Nick Jourdan, who has been fulfilling the role of producer/director since the inception of the productions in the late 1970s. Audiences were in agreement that this was one of his finest shows. The production takes a break while the pupils write their June mid-year exams and then the entire set, cast, backstage crew and orchestra head down to Durban, where the show will be performed at the Natal Playhouse from 28 June to 3 July.

A7L Apollo Suit The A7L Apollo spacesuit was the primary pressure suit worn by NASA astronauts for Project Apollo between 1968 and the termination of the Apollo programme in 1975.

After a successful exhibition in Europe, Gateway to Space: The Exhibition will be hosted at the Sandton Convention Centre from 1 June to 31 July 2016. Gateway to Space was assembled by the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, an official NASA Visitor Center. Have you ever wondered what it’s like in space? Gateway to Space introduces audiences to the people, technologies and circumstances that paid passage for human dreams to enter the realities of suborbital flight, Moon missions and sustained life in Space. The exhibition offers an impressive collection of hardware to enlighten and engage visitors, while instilling a sense of awe. Among highlights are a real moon rock, a life-size Mir Space station core module, a Sputnik-1 model and an Apollo capsule model. Gateway to Space: The Exhibition brings the great adventure of Space exploration to South Africa for the first time. Exhibition displays, including International Space Station elements and future, extended duration missions for deep Space, engage and excite Space dreamers and enthusiasts. This exhibition is shipped from Budapest (where it’s currently on show) in 20 shipping containers, making this the

biggest exhibition yet to travel to South Africa. To date, almost a million people have flocked to see this exhibition. One of the many highlights of the exhibition is a replica of the Mir Space station core module, built at an angle to give some effect of vertigo. You can walk inside and also view a model of such a craft’s pilot station. Other exciting parts of the exhibition include four original Space suits, the original Multi-Axis Trainer (MAT) based on a Mercury-era astronaut training scenario, a glimpse of a scale-model Space toilet, the food astronauts eat in Space and a model of the Orion capsule, which is designed for future missions to Mars. From youngsters seeing these items for the first time to the older generation who followed the Space race, Gateway to Space invites visitors to set imaginations free, cross thresholds and glimpse entirely new portals to mankind’s adventure in Space.
