We need to start by asking about your school career. Tell our readers more about your school career. Where were you at school and what would you always remember about school? I grew up in Bellville. I was in Bellpark Primary School and Bellville High School. I have good memories of school. I did a lot of diverse things and hung out with unique people. What type of teenager were you? I was wild at the start of high school, but pretty exemplary afterwards. I performed reasonably well, had many outdoor activities, played rugby and played in bands. Sometimes I was in trouble, but nothing too bad. The punks thought I was a jock and the jocks thought I was a punk. You grew up in a Christian home, how would you describe your relationship with your parents at high school and how is your relationship with your parents now that you’ve become a parent? My relationship with my parents has gone through ups and downs. At school, our relationship was pretty good, because I was an easy teenager to live with. My rebellion only started after school. I was 19 when I started to follow my own head and 23 when we started with F*kofpolisiekar. The name and the lyrics came as a big shock to my parents, and it gave our relationship a knock at that time. So, I think my parents understood me better. Now I appreciate my parents more because it is difficult to raise children and I understand it for the first time. My parents also help us a lot with my daughter, because my life is busy and help is needed. What will your teachers tell about you? They would say I was a good rugby player and a leader. What will you always remember about school you’d rather forget? Geography. It was a period that I found intolerable. The teacher had no passion for the subject, and I could pass without being in class. You are now a family man, how do you balance your career, marriage and fatherhood? I try my best to spend quality time with my family. They are my passion, hobby and favourite pastime. Every moment I’m not on the road, stage or TV, I’m trying to spend with my family.
You and your wife, Lauren, have been married for seven years, how did you made her fall in love with you? Wow, I can’t believe she fell for me. I was a crazy guy when she fell in love with me, but I believe she saw something in me. I was just myself, without making excuses for it.
Francois Van Coke, the lead singer of the legendary rock groups F*kofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel is well known in South Africa. In 2015 Francois made a massive impact with his gripping song ‘Toe Vind Ek Jou’ with Karen Zoid. This song also received numerous GHOEMA awards in 2016. He also has his own TV program on kykNET, Die Van Coke Show and he is also one of the coaches on M-Net’s popular talent search program The Voice Season 3. Currently, Francois is busy to arrange his spectacular rock and roll concert, Francois van Coke en Vriende. AWSUM asked this legend rocker a few questions.
What is your favourite song you released? There are a few. “Toe vind ek jou” from my solo career and “Hemel op die platteland” and “Komma” from F*kofpolisiekar. Anything you still want to achieve as a musician? Yes! I still want to make a lot of music that touches people. I want to throw even bigger shows and parties and show people a good time! How was it to go solo after all these years together as a band? It’s not that different, because I’m still playing with a band as a solo artist. One thing is different; my name is on the album cover. It’s something to get used to. All praise and all criticism come to me. This is quite an adaptation. What province has the best audience? Gauteng! How would you always like to be remembered? I want to be remembered as a dude that makes people feel better. What are you listening to in your car? Any song playing on repeat? Yes, I’m listening to the new Foals album and Jason Isbell’s “If we were vampires” playing on repeat. If you have to write a “how-to guide” for teenagers who want to make a success in the music industry, what will be the first three steps? 1. Practice every day. 2. Play with people you like. 3. Don’t do it for the money. You’ve made a big name in the music industry and have won numerous awards, what’s next for you? I’m working on my 3rd solo album. The best part of being a musician is writing new songs. So, I enjoy it a lot and work hard on it. I’m also doing two big shows. Francois van Coke & Vriende on May 3rd at Grand West in Cape Town and the date for Pretoria to be announced. Tickets available at Computicket.

St Peter’s Prep Schools Mentoring our Mentors and Camping! It is not just our Interns in the BigFutures Teacher Interns programme who benefit from on-going training and support, all of our mentor teachers are also given training to support them in their roles. Mentoring in Action In early March all of our mentor teachers attended a workshop hosted by Dr Reetta Niemi. She is a teacher at a school in Helsinki and also a researcher associated with the University of Helsinki with expertise in Pedagogic Theory, Teaching Methods and Teacher Education. She trained our mentors on Mentoring in Action and shared her experience and knowledge of the student teachers that she mentors in her own classroom. One of
the focus areas is how to engage student teachers and relate your teaching to their learning. Our mentor teachers found the training to be enormously helpful. “I Teach the Future” At the end of February our 6 first year Interns joined 120 University of Johannesburg first year students at their annual excursion to the Achterberg in Krugersdorp. The theme this year was “I teach the future”. The interns were given the opportunity to explore academic themes and utilise the camp setting to learn through games, simulations, dance, music and movies. There was also time to meet and interact with fellow students and have some fun. The interns found the camp to be a very valuable and fruitful learning experience.

Serves 4 • Preparation: 10 minutes • Cooking: 1½ hours Tomato stew will always be a popular dish for South Africans. We’ve added roasted masala as a twist to this recipe; use stewing meat on the bone to ensure optimum heartiness.
Ingredients
• 750 g stewing beef (with bone) salt and freshly ground black pepper 30 ml (2 T) olive oil • 4 garlic cloves, chopped • 2 onions, sliced • 5 ml (1 t) chilli flakes • 15–30 ml (1–2 T) roasted masala 100 g tomato paste • 250 ml (1 c) beef stock • 750 ml (3 c) water • 1 tin (410 g) whole tomatoes • 30 ml (2 T) brown sugar • 15 ml (1 T) lemon juice
Method
1 Season the meat with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a large pot and fry the meat in batches until golden brown. Remove and set aside. 2 Fry the garlic and onions until caramelised. Add the chilli flakes and masala and stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the tomato paste and mix through well. 3 Return the meat to the pot and pour over the stock. Add the water and bring to the boil. Simmer until the meat is tender (about 1 hour, depending on the meat). Add more water if necessary. 4 Add the tomatoes, sugar and lemon juice and simmer for another 15 minutes. Season with more salt and pepper if needed.
To serve with
• Fresh oregano, • Toasted ciabatta slices • Baby tomatoes.

LAERSKOOL LOUW GELDENHUYS (t) 011 782 5442 (e) pos@llg.co.za Koorkamp
Bemarkingsdag
PARKTOWN BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL (t) 011 642 4531/2 (e) info@parktownboys.com Old Boys Day! This past weekend we celebrated our School’s 96th Birthday and our annual Old Boys Day! It was an overwhelmingly successful event, with the highlight being the 1st XV Rugby team winning their game against the Old Boys team (19-10). Events such as these are a true testament of what the Parktown community is all about. The boys were on their best behaviour, the school grounds looked phenomenal and a great day was had by all. Congratulations to our 1st XV Hockey team, who played against a very experienced and professional Old Boys side and only narrowly coming off second best (2-7).
Sci-Fest
Middle: Maximus Perks. Backgrounds: Samir Azzie, Nsika Shongwe and Andiswa Nkosi.
On the 11 March 2019 Mohamed Mosam, Keeran Perumal and Kevin Mpano took part in the Sci-Fest national quiz. The Sci- Fest is an annual Science festival held at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. This Parktown team was one of four teams invited to this quiz, after a preliminary test in February. It was nerve wracking sitting in front of an audience and answer questions in a limited time period. The boys made us proud and ended third. Congratulations to these three boys. They all did very well! At this festival there were lectures, displays and demonstrations being held. One of the lectures that we attended was on finding exoplanets and some of the telescopes that are used. This is a wonderful opportunity to show that the academics at our fine school is on par with the best Moiya McTier was the speaker, pictured here with schools in the country. Mohamed, Kevin and Keeran.

BRYNEVEN PRIMARY (t) (011) 463 1453 (e) admin@bryneven.co.za Registrations open for schools affiliated to the Johannesburg Primary Schools Football Association The Johannesburg Primary Schools Football Association (JPSFA) will once again form part of the under-12 Danone Nations Cup, the biggest soccer tournament for children between the ages of 10 and 12 in the world. Registrations are open and the tournament will take place in May. The tournament celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and the JPSFA first came on board in 2017. Their affiliated schools will be playing for a chance to represent the association at the Gauteng Provincial Finals where they will compete against those schools affiliated to the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) who have won their district playoffs. The Gauteng provincial winner will go on to compete at the national finals against the other 8 provincial champions, with the ultimate winner representing South Africa at the Danone Nations Cup world finals scheduled for Barcelona in October. One school that has already registered to compete again this year is Bryneven Primary from Sandton. The team will again be coached by Naeem Nakooda who believes he has a few tricks up his sleeve to achieve more success this year. “We won all our league games last year to reach the semifinals, but lost in a penalty shootout to Heronbridge after neither of us managed to score in regulation time,” he said. “This year we will play a more attacking game to ensure we finish all games in regulation playing time to avoid facing the lottery of a penalty shootout.”. The tournament is run under the auspices of the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) who collate registration forms, finalise dates and fixtures and manage the games at cluster, regional, provincial and national level.
