A: I’m just a small town girl with a passion for DIY, braaiing and dinner parties. My movie of the moment is the How To Be Single and my favourite book is How to do Just about Everything by The Reader’s Digest. Q: Why do you think you are so popular? What is your secret to success? AWSUM EDITORIAL MAY 2016
Q: What are your top five DIY tips for women like yourself who like to be glamorous and never get their hands dirty while doing the dirty work A: Right, this is a good one. It’s important to always look your best no matter what you are busy doing. • Wear an apron when you are in the kitchen. • Use safety goggles when you chop onions to stop your eyes from tearing up and smudging your make-up. • Run your nails over a bar of soap before you do the gardening. It will keep the dirt from getting under your nails. • Buy a box of disposable gloves. They are great to use for any DIY project. • I like to cut up plastic packets and lay them down on my work surface to prevent any mess escaping Q: What do you do for fun and relaxation in your leisure time? A: I like to go for a coffee with my best friend, Marianne. I like to watch cooking shows and look for DIY ideas on the Google. Q: Other celebrities, across a spectrum, like Nataniël, Hellen Zille, Tim Noakes and Jan-Hendrik, want to be associated with you. Why is that? What do they gain? What do you gain? A: I think they are just excited to meet me because they want to soak up some of my creativity.

Checks --- in any shape or form are compulsory. Oversized checked flannel shirt --- wear it over T’s, under puffas and always around your waist. Ripped, patched, washed-out jeans --- the scruffier the better and denim cut-offs with dark tights for the girls. Denim overalls --- wear one strap unclasped, folding down the panel and this also works with pinnies. Beanie mania ---- THE unisex accessory or bandanas and flat bill caps for dudes. Chunky boots --- floral pretties for the gals and good old American work boots for the guys.

NORTHCLIFF HIGH SCHOOL Gauteng/KwaZulu-Natal Sport Festival 2016 The Gauteng/KwaZulu-Natal Rugby and Hockey festival took place from 28 April to 2 May 2016 at Northcliff High School. This festival has been in existence since the early eighties. It started off with a couple of schools which annually played on a home and away basis against one another. It evolved into a festival with 20 participating schools - this festival is the biggest of its kind in South Africa with its primary focus on rugby at English co-ed schools. Matches are played over two days between 10 schools from Gauteng and 10 schools from Kwa-Zulu Natal. On the Saturday matches were played against a traditional rival and on Monday it was strength versus strength. A further unique aspect of the festival is the hosting of visiting players by the local schools. Many friendship bonds have been started and remained over the years due to this. Participating schools this year were as follows: Benoni High Fourways High Hillcrest High Randpark High Durban North College Mondeor High Bryanston High Glenvista High Kloof High KZN Development Port Natal High Northcliff High Edenvale High Hyde Park High Northcliff 2nd XV George Campbell School New Forest High Jabulani Rugby Club of Technology Krugersdorp High Alberton High

(t) 011 476 1544 (e) awilkins@northcliffhigh.co.za A new initiative this year was the inclusion of hockey for both boys and girls. BRYANSTON PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 011 7061263 (e) newsletter@bryanstonprimary.co.za Bryanston Primary gears up for annual Soccer and Netball Tournament Bryanston Primary School will be hosting its annual Soccer and Netball Tournament on 20 and 21 May, at its premises in Mount Street, Bryanston. Established in 1969 by Bryanston Primary’s deputy headmaster, the late Mr Chris Joubert, this will be the 47th Annual Soccer Tournament and the 19th Annual Netball Tournament to be run at the school. Participating schools include Bryanston, Bryandale, Bryneven, Crawford Sandton, Montrose, and two U12 soccer teams from Zimbabwean school Petra, from Bulawayo. “The aim of this event is to have as many children as possible participating, to develop a passion for both these sports in primary school children,” says Bryanston Primary’s headmaster, Mr Leon Botha. “This year, we have a new and exciting format which extends this tournament over one and a half days, creating an additional ‘Mini Tournament’ for under-8 and under-9 players.”
On Friday, 20 May, from 14h30-17h00, the school will be hosting a Mini Soccer and Netball Tournament, for U8 and U9 Soccer and Netball teams. “This will be one of the few school tournaments in the northern suburbs that includes U8 netball, in an effort to boost development of this exciting sport for girls,” says Mr Botha. This will be followed by a Soccer and Netball Tournament for U10, U11, U12 and Open teams on Saturday, 21 May from 08h00-15h00. Bryanston Primary will use neutral umpires, to ensure fairness in refereeing across all games. “We will run a full round-robin across the sports and age group, also to ensure fairness in that all teams within an age group will play every other team,” says Mr Botha. “Using this method, the top two teams will face each other in an exciting final, followed by a group prize-giving on both days where all teams will participate. Medals, trophies and special prizes will be
given out at this time.” The school anticipates welcoming a total of 30003500 players and supporters to its grounds over the two-day period. Entry fee is R10 per person for supporters (players and coaches receive free entry). A number of sponsors will be present on the day with exciting promotions and giveaways, including 32GI and FutureLife. Technology and communications company three6five, based in Midrand, will be sponsoring free wifi for visitors’ use throughout the event. Food and refreshments will be on sale during both days.

St David’s Marist Foundation launches ‘Business in Education’ B-BBEE Bursary Fund Initiative St David’s Marist Inanda, through the School’s Foundation, launched an education initiative to encourage the business community of South Africa to collaborate with the school in establishing a fund which will enable the school to expand its existing bursary programme which awards young deserving scholars from historically disadvantaged backgrounds, with bursaries to attend this school of excellence. The initiative was launched at the JSE with a market open to celebrate. Market openings at the JSE are often reserved for newly listed companies issuing their stock for public trade and in celebration of a new chapter in a company’s life. However, the JSE saw it fitting to host the business in education fund initiated by St David’s Inanda School and notably as the first school to open the market.

It was a well-supported and exciting event that involved all the girls running in their House colours. Each age group left at different stages, with intervals of
15 minutes between each. Enthusiastic parents came out in their numbers to support their daughters and cheer them on. The Headmaster, Mr Darrel Webb, joined in the Grade 7 event and was accompanied by a large group of loyal ‘fans’ as he came in to cross the finish line!
Congratulations to Founders House who won the event, although that fact proved to be of little importance compared to the spirit and the enjoyment which were, obviously, the highlight of the day.

KING EDWARD VII SCHOOL (t) 011 551 5800 (e) www.kes.co.za Budding Grade 10 scientists show their class The Grade 10 Physical Science boys recently completed their project requiring them to make a model of a molecule. They were given a blank canvas to decide on the molecule and its construction. They were encouraged to use items from home. The project involved completing the required research on the molecule, the arrangement of the constituent parts, and their correct assembly. It was very impressive to see the quality of the work submitted and the depth to which the boys went to present their model.
Grade 8s showcase their landscape artworks These fantastic artworks were produced by the Grade 8s who were asked to create a pastel landscape in a similar style to the Impressionist artists they studied in Term 1.
