Siba Mtongana het Suid-Afrika op die kaart geplaas in die wêreld van kookkuns. Hierdie internasionale multi-bekroonde kookkunstenaar, skrywer en entrepreneur het ‘n globale invloed op meer as 130 lande opgebou. Siba het die kuns van kos na miljoene huise regoor die wêreld gebring met haar kookprogram Siba’s Table op Food Network. Sy is ook ‘n ontvanger van die gesogte Ubuntu-toekenning 2018 vir haar bydrae as ‘n wêreldwye ambassadeur in haar veld. Siba is ‘n invloedryke vrou wat Suid-Afrika se voedsel- en vermaaklikheidsbedryf beinvloed. Terwyl Siba die eerste Afrikaner is om ‘n Prestige-toekenning te wen vir die impak van haar kookboek My Table, gepubliseer deur The Siba Co, is sy ook die ambassadeur van die internasionale organisasie, Rise Against Hunger. Behalwe haar wêreldbekende status as kookkunstenaar, is dit Siba se positiewe houding en gesonde benadering tot familie, lewe en besigheid wat haar gehoor vir meer laat terugkeer. AWSUM het vir haar ‘n paar vrae gevra:
Ons moet begin deur te vra oor jou skoolloopbaan, waar het jy matrikuleer? Ek het matrikuleer by Hoërskool Alphendale in die Oos-Kaap. Wat het jy van skool geniet? Ek was lief vir wiskunde, wetenskap en rekeningkunde, en ek het regtig goed gedoen in elkeen van hulle. My ma het eintlik gedink ek sal ‘n rekenmeester of prokureur word, jammer ma! Ek het ook altyd ‘n baie nuuskierige geaardheid gehad, en skool was die ideale plek om my nuuskierigheid te bevredig. Waarvan het jy nie van skool gehou nie? Hoewel dit deesdae meer algemeen in die skoolstelsel voorkom, het ek gevoel en voel ek nogsteeds dat die stelsel te gestandaardiseerd is en op ou beginsels gebaseer is. Baie kinders met verskillende vaardighede het nie die geleentheid om hul talente op jong ouderdom te verken nie en om die vaardighede te ontwikkel nie. Ek wens ek kon deel wees van ‘n meer progressiewe en vooruitdenkende skoolstelsel. Ek het ook nie veel loopbaanvoorligting op skool gehad nie, wat dit baie moeilik gemaak het om vakke te kies wat die grondslag vir my toekomstige loopbaan sou vorm. My advies aan studente wat nie toegang tot loopbaanvoorligting het nie, is om familielede te raadpleeg en moenie bang wees om uit te reik na mense wat goed doen in die bedryf waarin jy jouself sien en wie jy respekteer, nie. Wat sal jou onderwysers van jou sê? Ek was die gewillige kind in die klas, die een wat heel voor sit, gereed om die onderwyser ‘n vraag te vra. Ek hoop dat my onderwysers my as hardwerkend, intelligent en nuuskierig sal beskryf. Vertel ons asseblief van jou kinderjare en familie? Ek was geseën met die wonderlikste kinderjare. Ek het grootgeword in OosLonden, in ‘n Christelike huis wat gevul was met agt broers en susters, my ouers en baie liefde. My ma was ‘n onderwyser en my pa was ‘n toesighouer by ‘n leerprodukte vervaardigingsmaatskappy. My familie is tradisioneel hardwerkend en glo alles is moontlik mits jy hard genoeg daarvoor gewerk het. Wanneer en hoe het jou liefde vir kos ontwikkel? Van ‘n baie jong ouderdom af het my ma my geleer om ‘n groot waardering vir goeie kwaliteit produkte te kry. Ons het my ma van kleins af in die kombuis gehelp en gou het aandete my verantwoordelikheid geword. Ek het my ma om te bedank vir die feit dat sy so ‘n groot geduldige onderwyser is en dat sy ons aangemoedig het om te verken en kreatief te wees. Ons het nooit van ‘n kookboek gekook nie, dit kom uit die siel. Die passie was daar, al wat ek moes doen was om die vaardigheid en kennis deur middel van formele onderwys te benut. Ek het by CPUT ingeskryf en my graad in Voedsel- en Verbruikerswetenskappe verwerf. My studies vorm die grondslag van my sukses en ek raai studente sterk aan om te kyk na hulle opleiding, soos ek gedoen het.

Jy is ‘n moeder van vier pragtige kinders, wat is jou resep om jou loopbaan, man en kinders gelukkig te hou? Dit is nie maklik nie. Ek het geleer om sterk ondersteuningsstelsels in plek te hê, of dit nou ‘n au pair by die huis is, of betroubare werknemers in die kantoor. My susters en my kerkfamilie is so belangrik vir my, hulle skep beslis ‘n gevoel van harmonie en geestelike grondslag in my lewe. Dan het ek my man, Brian, wie my grootste ondersteuningsisteem is, beide fisies en emosioneel. My boodskap hier is dat dit kom neer op die besluit dat jy in elke deel van jou lewe wil slaag en om maniere te vind om dit te laat werk, die dae van vroue moet net een werk hê is verby, waaroor ek bly is. Wat is jou maklike en vinnige ete wat jy altyd vir jou gesin maak? Ek is ‘n groot voorstaander van oorskietkos vir middagete. Ek hou van die idee om wonderlike bestanddele saam in een pan te gooi, dit is goed vir massa mense, dit is vinnig en die opruiming is altyd eenvoudig. Hierdie Sibalicious resepte kan jy in my kookboek vind, beskikbaar by Woolworths en Exclusive Books. Wat sien jy as sukses? Jy moet ‘n baie duidelike visie hê van waarheen jy wil gaan, gekombineer met ‘n rotsagtige plan om daarby uit te kom, en dan so hard as moontlik werk daarheen. Die suksesvolste mense in die lewe is nie diegene wat eerste daar uitkom nie, maar eerder die individue wat keer op keer opgestaan het en geweier het om die nederlaag te aanvaar. Sukses vir my is om nie nerderlaag te aanvaar nie en om elke dag bietjie voorentoe te beweeg. My boodskap aan die leerders is om goeie selfvertroue te ontwikkel, die negatiwiteit uit jou gedagtes te verwyder en te weet dat jy soveel meer kan doen as wat jy selfs glo. Enige advies wat jy kan gee aan ons AWSUM-aanhangers in die skool wat ‘n kosloopbaan wil volg? Bou ‘n soliede basis deur jou opvoeding. Plaas jouself in die beste moontlike posisie om die werk te vind wat jy wil. Bevorder jou opleiding! Hierdie bedryf is nie vir die swakkeling of vir diegene wat roem soek nie, die ure is lank en intens en die omgewing is hoogs mededingend. As jy nie ‘n dik vel het nie of nie gereed is om een te ontwikkel nie, is hierdie bedryf nie vir jou nie. Doen baie navorsing voordat jy iets nastreef sodat jy dit alles kan gee. Dit is ‘n wonderlike bedryf om in te wees, en ons het soveel beksikbare opsies, MAAR die werk moet gedoen word lank voordat die belonings gesien word! Wat is jou visie vir 2019? Ek is so opgewonde vir 2019, dit gaan vir my ‘n groot jaar wees en vir my besigheid, The Siba Co. Ons werk stil in die agtergrond en sal sien dat hierdie projekte in die nuwe jaar tot lewe kom. Ek hoop om voort te gaan om te werk in harmonie en goeie balans in elke aspek van my lewe, en om in elkeen te floreer. Ek hoop dat my eerste kookboek steeds van rakke af sal vlieg, ek hoop om aanhangers steeds te beïnvloed, of dit nou op skerms, sosiale media of gedrukte media is, ek is ook oorval met versoeke vir kookgerei, nog ‘n boek en soveel meer ... al wat ek nou kan sê is dat ek luister! Ek kan nie wag om meer met julle te deel nie.

Gegeurde Hoender Tacos Bestandele:
• 2 Hoenderfilette, oopgevlek (vlinder)
Vryfmiddel:
• Seesout • 1 E canola olie • 1 t gerookte paprika • ½ brandrissievlokkies • 1 t knoffel • ½ t warm mosterdpoeier • 1 E vars gekapte koljander • 1E dik mayonnaise • ‘n knippie sout • 1 E olyfolie
3. Verhit die olie in ‘n groot, swaar kleefvrye pan en kook die hoender vir 5-6 minute aan die eerste kant tot dit effens bruin is. Draai en kook vir 2 minute aan die ander kant. Verwyder van hitte en bedek met die deksel of foelie, en rus die hoender vir minstens 5 minute.
Bedien met:
• 4 harde taco skulpe of meer • 1 blikkie rooi nierboontjies, gespoel • 250 g gemengde kersietamaties, kwarte • 125 ml suurroom • 2 advokados, gesny • 2 lemmetjies, kwarte • 1-fles salsa • 65 g gerasperde cheddarkaas • ‘n Klomp koljanderblare, verwyder stingels
Metode:
1. Vlinder die hoender deur elke filet langs die middelste lengte te sny sonder om heeltemal deur te gaan en oop te maak. Meng die olie, paprika, brandrissie, knoffel, mosterd, koljander, mayo en sout saam om ‘n vryfmiddel te maak. 2. Smeer ‘n teelepel van die vryfmiddel op elke hoenderfilet met die agterkant van die teelepel.
4. Skep die gekookte filette op ‘n stukkie waspapier in die middel van ‘n groot bord en sny dit in stroke. Rangskik alles anders om die hoender, party in hope direk op die bord en sommige in klein bakkies.

Mr Simon Henderson (Head Master of Eton College) At St Peter’s Prep The current Head Master of Eton College (Eton, Berkshire, England), spent time as a gap year student, at St Peter’s Prep. This was years back when the current Rector of St Peter’s Prep, Greg Royce, began his tenure as Headmaster of the Boys School. At ISASA’s request, Simon Sean Henderson was approached - asking him to deliver a keynote address at the ISASA and Independent Schools Heads’ Conference, which took place over the half-term. Simon and his wife, Ali (a former advisor to Tony Blaire and Gordon Brown) were welcomed at a dinner held at St Peter’s Prep, prior to the conference. It was fascinating to hear his anecdotes about Eton College and the boys, some of which involved the reigning monarch. Much later in the evening, he startled us when he jumped up to make an impromptu speech. He expressed his gratitude to St Peter’s for making him feel so welcome and went on to emphasise the impact that many staff had on him. He coyly admitted that one of his passwords for the Eton IT network contained the letters ‘FNIMH’ – Furber Nothard Is My Hero. Furber is a recently-retired Boarder Housemaster who pops in from time to time as a substitute teacher. The boys have always loved him. In his scholarly address to the 500+ delegates at the conference, Simon spoke passionately about the need for a social and emotional connection as technology and artificial intelligence play an increasingly dominant role in teaching and learning. He went on to say that it was crucial that all children feel accepted at school, welcomed and valued as individuals. Of all the schools at which he had taught or visited, St Peter’s Prep had been by far the most welcoming. He had felt a true sense of acceptance and belonging. His St Peter’s experience, Simon said, had persuaded him to pursue a career in teaching. It was this ethos, he said, that he was attempting to bring to Eton. St Peter’s Prep featured disproportionately in the conference. The ISASA National Director, a St Peter’s Old Boy, opened the proceedings. This was followed by the annual report by the ISASA Chairman, David Hunter, also a St Peter’s Old Boy. Simon Henderson’s address followed that of the Minister of Education. The speakers were all presented with the gift of an original painting by James Delaney - another St Peter’s Old Boy. “The culture of making every child and staff member feel included and valued is a facet at which we work constantly at St Peter’s Prep” says Rector, Greg Royce. “We see it as the core of our Anglican ethos. We are reminded of our successes and failures in this aspect each time an Old Boy or Girl returns to visit the school. We only ever want to be ‘ahead of the game and behind every child’.”

This was the second year our students participated in this Olympiad. Of a total number of 6813 entrants country wide, 2302 students qualified for the Second Round. SAIPA National Accounting Olympiad The National Accounting Olympiad is organized in conjunction with SAIPA (South African Institute for Professional Accountants). Traditionally the Olympiad was for Gr. 12 learners only, but a new section for Gr. 11 students was added in 2017. This Olympiad has grown from 120 schools in 2010 to 483 schools in 2018. A total of 6800 students participated in the 2018 Olympiad, including 10 students from St Peter’s College. Student Executive Council Camp The annual Student Executive Council Camp is always a highlight for the newly appointed leadership group and this year was no exception. They recently attended a Leadership Development Course, held at Spirit of Adventure, Rustenburg. The main focus of this camp was to give the executive structure of the student leadership at the school an opportunity to hone their leadership skills through bonding, learning how to trust one another, the discovery of the power of their own potential and an understanding of the importance of team work and most importantly, planning. The students returned with a greater understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses, knowing that they are collectively tasked to assist the management structure of the school in maintaining a positive school image and promoting the values of the school through a sense of belonging.
Rowing The 1st VIII claimed a Bronze medal in the finals at the Gauteng Rowing Championships this past weekend at Roodeplaat. Congratulations to an amazing crew and coaches on a fantastic weekend’s racing. We look forward to seeing them again in action at Boat Race in Port Alfred in December.

“Lets play”

The end of year should bring with it winding down. Not at our school. Yesterday a group of Grade 4 and a group of Grade 6 children participated in a provincial competition “Let’s play”. Craighall was representing Gauteng as we were the winning school for Gauteng. We came second and will be facing the Western Cape on 11 December in the finals. Then our Grade 7 pupils learnt basic CPR and how to respond if someone is choking. To see their enthusiasm is so inspiring, they do not give up!

Louwtjies se jaarlikse koorafsluitingsfunksie het op Donderdag, 1 November by NG Kerk Linden se Vryburgersaal plaasgevind. Dit was ‘n heerlike aand van pragtige koorsang, lekker spitbraai en gesellige saamkuier. 2018 was voorwaar ‘n uitstaande koorjaar en almal betrokke is hartlik bedank vir hulle onderskeie bydraes. Ons het ook afskeid geneem van die Gr 7 leerders wat die koor verlaat. Mooi loop en lekker sing!
Nie net is hulle NO1 in Suid-Afrika nie, hulle is op pad na Singapore om deel te neem aan die wêreldkampioenskappe.
Louwtjie Personeel is die beste Louwtjies se revue, #Aarde, het getuig van spanwerk, toewyding en pret. Terwyl die leerders elke aand ná ’n besige skooldag getrou hul plek op die verhoog ingeneem het om hul talente ten toon te stel, het die personeel hard agter die skerms gewerk om alles seepglad te laat verloop.

Grade 7/Open swimmers last gala for Bryanston
Congratulations to the Class of 2018!
Well done to our Grade 7/Open swimmers, who finished their last gala for Bryanston Primary today after an undefeated season where they won every relay event they participated in. We are very proud of them! Most of this group have swum together since Grade 2 and represented their school with pride. Thank you for your service and good luck at high school - you will be missed!
Valediction 2018 – a celebration of brotherhood, tradition and excellence.
