FRESH EGGS NOURISH THE MIND

Gary Kirsten The businessman, the family man, Gary Kirsten the man

FREE / GRATIS

Gary Kirsten

The ultimate family, business and sportsman

Gary Kirsten is a former South African opening batsman and the World Cup winning coach of the Indian cricket team. Kirsten is currently an assistant coach at Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore. This family man has 3 children and is the owner of Gary Kirsten Cricket Coaching business in Cape Town. While travelling Abu Dhabi on cricket camps, Gary Kirsten answered a few questions. Gary, you grew up in Rondebosch, Cape Town. What do you remember about your high school days at Rondebosch High? I really enjoyed the school. It provided me with a strong base to be able to make something of my life. Most importantly, it helped me understand that there is a certain way of doing things when trying to make the most of opportunities. How did you and your wife meet? We met at a popular student “hang out” in Cape Town. You always put your family first. How do you manage the top priorities in your life? I think we are all affected by our experiences as a child. I had two loving parents who did not like each other and it had a significant effect on me. It has made me determined that my children do not go through the same journey. What does a perfect family day look like in the Kirsten household? Like any other fully functioning family – we like to create experiences that provide longlasting memories. On the weekends we will always try and do something together. How and when did you decide that you want to pursue cricket and that you are really good? Not until I had finished school. My only measure in working out whether I could play the game professionally was how many runs I scored. I never thought I was particularly good or talented, but I kept scoring runs. What went through your mind when facing Glenn McGarth? He was one bowler who had the better of me throughout my career. I always felt distinctly uncomfortable facing him and probably did not do myself any favours with my mental approach.

You’ve met and played with/against great cricketers. Did you receive any wisdom you can share with us? The older one gets as a player the more comfortable one becomes with just who one is. I spent a lot of my career trying to be someone I wasn’t to please others. What do you prefer, playing or coaching cricket? I enjoyed the challenge of playing but I have loved every day of coaching. Please tell us about your coaching business? I work with a fantastic group of young enthusiastic and seriously good coaches. We provide a global coaching service to those who are interested in working with us. What does cricket mean to you? Cricket has been a way of life for me. It has taught me everything I am today. I am one of the fortunate few, who have been able to make a living out of something that has remained a passion and hobby. Any motivational words/ tips for a young cricketer? Be only who you uniquely are, represent a strong set of values in everything you do and understand that your career is your journey, not your destination. Don’t let your life be dictated by results and “bottom lines”. What is your favourite song? Don’t have one – do not really listen to music except if I am on a treadmill, which is not often. You reached great achievements in your cricket career, do you have any goals you still want to achieve as cricket coach? I love coaching and helping others learn about themselves. My journey is to continue finding methods and tools that help others optimize their potential.

Interskole Musiekaand 2018

Hockey Excellence Rewarded

Congratulations St Peter’s Boys Prep On Monday morning we had the pleasure of acknowledging the Grade 7 boys who have been awarded scholarships to various schools in 2019. These boys have worked particularly hard in certain areas of the curriculum and we congratulate them on their efforts. They will, we are sure, be fine ambassadors for St Peter’s as they continue with their educational journey in high school. We are extremely proud of these boys and acknowledge the support of their families and teachers in their success.

Dads and Daughters events in celebration of Father’s Day Two fun-filled events were held at St Peter’s Girls Prep School recently - in celebration of Father’s Day and to create an opportunity for the girls to have some special, quality time with their dads! The Grade 3 girls and their dads were invited to an Orienteering and Coding Morning! They were required to work together, planning and programming a robot to follow a route on a grid, which the pairs had previously walked, on the school estate together. Lots of discussion and planning ensued and the girls were able, in most cases, to teach their dads some of their skills. Both dads and daughters were captivated by the activity and one dad was heard to ask his daughter if he could please have a turn now!! The Grade 4 and 5 girls attended the annual Dads and Daughters Dinner, with special ‘dates’ for the evening – their dads! The Grade 6 pupils traditionally, arrange this memorable evening and serve at the tables, making sure that their guests are well looked after! A delicious dinner is served, after which there is dancing! This year was particularly successful and enjoyed by girls and their dads, alike. We trust that our dads all had a wonderful Father’s Day and were treated by their families!

Drama Backstage Crew Tour of the Teatro Theatre Drama Backstage Tour On 25 April, some of the backstage crew, sound, and lighting team for this year’s production “The Great Gatsby” had the privilege and honour to get a backstage tour of the Teatro Theatre at Monte Casino, where currently The Sound of Music is being performed. We really got to see and learn all the ins and outs of the theatre as well as the history of the theatre and the productions that have been performed in the Teatro. Our tour included sights such as the backstage, the automotive booth, the stage managers station, the orchestra pit, the quick-change area, the sound and lighting booth as well as walking on the stage. In each section, we learned just how important each section was for the production to run smoothly. This tour gave us all real insight into how much effort from so many people it takes to put a show together and for it to run smoothly. We were told about each job and how much focus and dedication each person needs to have – from backstage crew to lighting teams, and of course, the actors. We had the privilege and bonus feature of being able to talk to the automotive controller who showed us how they program and run each automotive (these are the set changes that are programmed by a computer and carried out electronically as opposed to having real people move set on and off the stage). We also learned a lot from the sound director. Our sound and lighting team were in heaven and practically drooling when they saw all the equipment used to execute the sound and lighting for the show. Overall the tour was extremely eye-opening, and I believe each one of us learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Bryneven Primary turns 50 - Historical Overview The inaugural meeting of the Care Taker Committee of all the new Bryanston Primary School was held on the 13 th November 1967 at the residence of Mr and Mrs J Raubenheimer, 2015 Farm Street Bryanston. This Committee acted as a school committee and the PTA Committee for a period of 3 months. All these committees were elected at a meeting held at Bryneven School on 24 January 1968.

The Committee was tasked with establishing the name of the new school, design uniforms, school colours and badges and raise funds for the purchase of items not supplied by Transvaal Education Department. The name Bryneven was decided on as it was short and encorporated reference to Bryanston, being derived from Bryanston Extension Seven. It was decided to use the Strelitzia Flower as school emblem and yellow, white and blue as the School Colours. Mrs Anderson designed the school crest. On 16th January 1968 Bryneven was opened by the Inspector of Education Mr JJH de Villiers who read a pledge of Loyalty during his address. Basing our Values on the Acronym of Great to mean Gratitude, Respect, Empathy, Acceptance and Truth.
