Grade 9 subject choices: why you should start considering them now In a few months’ time, Grade Nine learners will be required to make important decisions about which combination of subjects they will be pursuing through to their final Matric exams. This is an important first milestone on the road to building a career, an education expert says, adding that while the decision would normally be left until later in the year, the world has changed so dramatically that Grade Nines should start thinking about this significant decision sooner rather than later. “The world changed last year – not just because schooling and work were disrupted and not just because both had to happen from home in ways never imagined before. The world changed because we are unlikely to go back to what we experienced in 2019,” says Natasha Madhav, Senior Head of Programme: Faculty of ICT at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest private higher education provider. “It has long been said that one needs to prepare young people for jobs that do not exist, but this has never been a concept that has been crystallised in a way that really helped one make decisions. Perhaps it is clearer now to focus on preparing for a world of work that is changed and focusing on industries and skill sets that are and will be in demand, rather than on jobs with names that are familiar to us. “So, for instance, law has not vanished as a field, but most lawyers now need to consult online as easily as they do in person and they can collaborate in real time with colleagues all over the place. They also need to be advising people on both physical and digital implications of what they do.”
“The basic instruction is the same – develop an understanding of fields you are interested in and the things you are good at. Then look for jobs and careers that seem future-focused. Then, look for institutions that not only offer future-oriented curricula, but whose teaching and learning and assessment are explicitly directed at a changing world”. This then links to smart subject choices, Madhav says. “If your field is likely to be scientific and technical and analytical, you are still well served to include maths and science and perhaps a technology subject. If your field is problem-solving and solution-oriented, then subjects like history and design or visual arts will provide that skill set. If you are looking for both, you will need both. Higher education institutions are not going to move away from some of the standard demands for particular high-demand disciplines or fields, so be sure that you understand what you need for admission and include these in your choices. One of the key issues to consider is the fact that automation is on the rise, and that technological adoption by companies will transform jobs and indemand skills in future. And, as noted by the WEF in their most recent Future of Jobs report, skills gaps will continue to be high as in-demand skills across jobs change in the next five years. As noted in the report: “The top skills and skill groups which employers see as rising in prominence in the lead up to 2025 include groups such as critical thinking and analysis as well as problem-solving, and skills in self-management such as active learning, resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility… On average,

companies estimate that around 40% of workers will require reskilling of six months or less and 94% of business leaders report that they expect employees to pick up new skills on the job, a sharp uptake from 65% in 2018.” So where to start researching which careers will exist when you matriculate, and which of them might interest you? “A good place to start, on top of doing online research, is to find a higher education institution that has already demonstrated that they produce technically proficient and in-demand graduates, whose skills are aligned with what is required in the workplace because of their close industry connections. In other words, an institution whose curricula are up-to-date at all times, and that is able to quickly and resiliently respond to our fast-changing world. You will know who they are as they will confidently speak about change and flexibility and adaptability and about the link between study and work,” says Madhav. “By speaking to a student advisor at such an institution, which crucially must also be able to demonstrate that meaningful learning continued during lockdown, learners will be able to discuss their current interests and strengths, and then get advice and insight into which fields will be in high demand in future, and which subjects they can choose later this year, which will give them access to these fields.”

Wat is jou beste herinnering tydens jou krieketloopbaan? Dit was toe ek 146 lopies geslaan het. Hoe voel dit om uiteindelik teen ander skole, na die 2020 Covid – regulasies te speel? Dit voel baie lekker om weer na die Covid 19 pandemie te kan speel. Krieket speel ‘n groot rol in my lewe, so om weer die sport te speel waarin ek belangstel, is lekker. Hoe gaan dit met julle seisoen sover? Dit gaan baie goed sover, ons het in 2020 2de plek behaal, maar ons werk hard om hierdie jaar te kan wen. Is jy `n natuurlike leier? Bv: `n goeie oog vir veldwerk plasings, die rotering van boulers en om situasies tydens die wedstryd te identifiseer en te analiseer? Ja, ek is ‘n natuurlike leier. Waaraan dink jy terwyl jy op die krieketveld is? Ek dink aan hoe om die veldplasing te sit en hoe om die bouler te help as hy sukkel en om my span se koppe op te tel en vir hulle te wys daar is hoop.
Wat maak jou span en skool spesiaal? Deur hard te oefen, 110% uit te leef op die veld, vertroue te hê in al die spelers, nooit op te gee nie en almal se keuses te respekteer.

What is you most memorable cricket moment? Winning the 2019 super league.
How did it feel to compete against other schools after the 2020 Covid restrictions? It was simply just wonderful to be out on the field and competing again. How has your season been going thus far? We have a very inexperienced side, seeing that we missed an entire year of cricket, but the boys are excited and ready for the challenges that lie ahead. Does leadership come naturally to you? A keen eye on field placements, rotating bowlers and identifying match situations. I personally feel leadership is something that should come naturally and should not be forced. But being a good leader on a cricket field comes through experiences of different match situations which make you learn and grow. What do you think about when you are at the crease? I’ve learnt to keep it simple, just by keeping my eyes on the ball and playing my shots. Who are your toughest opponents annually? Toughest opponents would have to be Hoërskool Pietersburg, they always bring
the heat. What makes your team and school special? I think the fact that we play for each other and want one another to do well, shows the unity in our school and that’s special. What motivates you to always give your best? In our team we always speak about being brothers, so when I do something I not only do it for myself but for the 10 other guys on the oval with me.

Ons is baie trots op die atlete wat Limpopo verteenwoordig het by die Suid-Afrikaanse Kampioenskappe.
Die wenners is Christine Loubser en Branden Perrier. Tweede was Lanelle Vermaak en Divan Malan. Nina van Heerden, Christi Kaiser, Edward Johnson en Johan Koen het ook deelgeneem. Een van die Vossie flippers het ‘n ongelooflike prestasie behaal. Jason Loucao het gekwalifiseer vir die senior nasionale swemgala. Daar is net ‘n handjie vol wat hierdie prestasie in die Limpopo provinsie bereik het. Die gala vind plaas vanaf 16-18 April 2021 by Hillcrest. Jason, die Vossies is “super” trots op jou! Ons gelukwense gaan ook aan mnr. Johan Grobbelaar, afrigter (SHAMU), met hierdie pragprestasie.

Waarna sien jy die meeste uit tydens jou tydperk as leier by jou skool? Ek sien baie uit daarna om die graad aggies te verwelkom tydens die verwelkomingsprogram, maar ook vir die matriekafskeid. Ek sien ook uit om my mede-Ben Viljoeners se belange op die hart te dra en hulle te verseker dat daar iemand is wat omgee oor hulle.
Enige boodskap van aanmoediging vir jou mede-leiers? Net dat ons in Jesus se weë moet wandel en hom die fokuspunt van ons lewens maak, en so ‘n voorbeeld vir ons medeBen Viljoeners stel. Ook om elke oomblik van 2021 te geniet want dit is die laaste jaar wat ons dit kan beleef en om die beste daarvan te maak.
Wat sou jy sê is jou sterk- en swakpunte? Ek is gedetermineerd en gemotiveerd, ek weet wat ek wil hê en sal streef daarna om my doelwitte te bereik. My swakpunte is egter dat ek partykeer te perfeksionisties en te hard op myself is.
Wie is jou rolmodel? My ma, sy is ‘n ongelooflike mens en ek is ongelooflik lief vir haar.
Is daar enige iets wat jy graag sou verander by jou skool? Ek sal graag meer tradisies by die skool wil hê/ begin, meer sosiale geleenthede laat plaasvind en ook dat ons leerders meer waardering vir mekaar sal hê en die lewe vir mekaar sal beter maak. Ons moet kan saam staan as een. Wat geniet jy die meeste van jou skool? Om my vriende te sien, tyd saam met hulle te spandeer en om lekker saam met hulle te lag. Ek geniet ook vreeslik baie die sport, veral hokkie en atletiek. Matriek is jou laaste jaar- van ‘n akademiese oogpunt, wat sy graag wil bereik? Ek sal graag my onderskeidings wil behaal en keuring kry vir dit wat ek wil studeer.
Wat is jou planne vir na skool? Ek beplan om universiteit toe te gaan. As jy ‘n super-hero kon wees, wie sou dit wees en waarom? Wonder Woman.
