AWSUM Celebrity Interview Duane Vermeulen Daniel Johannes ‘Duane’ Vermeulen is gebore op 3 Julie 1986 en matrikuleer aan die Hoërskool Nelspruit. Van daar loop sy professionele rugbyloopbaan deur die Pumas (2005–2007), die Cheetahs (2007–2008) en die Stormers (2009–2015), tot nou by Toulon in Frankryk waar hy tans op kontrak is. Duane speel sy eerste van 35 toetse (tot einde 2015) op 8 September 2012 teen Australië. In 2014 was hy benoem as een van vyf vir die IRB Player of the Year-toekenning. As die ysterman van SuidAfrikaanse rugby word Duane gerespekteer as ‘n wêreldklas speler hier en oorsee. AWSUM News het by hom gaan inloer om te hoor hoe die lewe in Frankryk hom behandel.

Tydens die ATKV-Applouskoorkompetisie het altwee die kore goue sertifikate verwerf. Tydens die Super 12-koorkompetisie het die twee kore die hoogste toekennings, Cum Laude, ontvang.

Washington Area Model United Nations Conference Francois Crewe recently participated in the Washington Area Model United Nations Conference (WAMUNC) in the USA. He got awarded the Outstanding Delegate award, from more than 2 000 high school learners from all over the world. WAMUNC is like the world championship of Model United Nations, with some of the best youth diplomats in the world participating. During the conference, delegates debated current international affairs, including the rights of migrant workers, climate change, the North Korean regime and the Iranian Nuclear Deal. This has been the culmination of his high school political career, as he has been an active participant in several other national and regional conferences.

This year was extra auspicious since it was the once-in-a-century Rounded Up Pi Day, when the month, day and year are pi correct to four decimal places rounded up to the nearest decimal place. Pi is 3.14159 to five decimal places. Rounded up to four it is 3.1416. And this year it was 3/14/16! In celebration of pi (pi is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle, and it is a very useful number in mathematics) as well as Einstein’s birthday, Girls High had a pi week!

Michelle Bloem, a Grade 8 learner at The High School for Girls Potchefstroom won 7 gold medals and broke 7 South African records at the Nedbank National Championships For Physically Disabled held in Bloemfontein.

In die groepafdelings wen hulle die pom/non prop-, vlag- en “Throwing Prop” afdelings. Hulle neem ook in beide die small- en large drill afdelings deel en word as algehele wenners in beide die drills aangewys met eerste plekke in al die onderafdelings. Hoofleidsters Charlain Labuschagne en ZandaLee Martin het in hulle onderskeie drill-afdelings ook eerste plekke behaal. Op grond van hulle uitslae gedurende die seisoen tesame met Saterdag se uitslae word KHS se trompoppiespan ook as algehele ligawenners (Champion of Champions) aangewys.
