DIY CANDLE STICKS
Be AWSUM. Read AWSUM. Delivered directly to the parents through the school!
Go green for the month of love and repurpose old pieces of wood into candle sticks. YOU’LL NEED: Thick pieces of wood Saw and hammer Cutting tongs Panel pin nails WHAT TO DO: • Start by selecting a few different pieces of wood. • If the stumps are uneven, use the saw to resize them – and to make sure they don’t fall over.
• Hammer a nail into the piece of wood until there is approximately 1.5cm sticking out. This will be used to hold the candle. • Once the nail has been secured, use the cutting tongs to remove the head. • You can also hammer nails into the side of the piece of wood to add a
decorative element. I made some birds from modelling clay. • Be careful when placing the candle on to the exposed nail, as using too much force might cause the candle to split. To avoid this, warm the nail with a lighter before trying to position the candle.

FOOD
Chocolate and cherry cream meringue gâteau THE PERFECT PARTY Serves 6-8 The inspiration for making chocolate Pavlova (which is, in essence, what this gâteau is), came from dear friend and wonderful cook Stephanie Pattinson, whom I regard as a second mom. It’s a really special dessert: meringue stacked high with layers of cream and melted chocolate, and sprinkled with cherries. True decadence, and definitely worth the effort. For the chocolate meringue • 8 egg whites • pinch of salt • 450g castor sugar • 10ml vanilla extract • 20ml white vinegar • 40ml corn flour, sifted • 30ml cocoa powder, sifted For the layers • 180g good quality dark chocolate • 200ml cream (to melt with chocolate)* • 10ml vanilla extract or seed scrapings of 1 vanilla pod • 300ml cream, whipped until just stiff* • fresh cherries or strawberries for
garnishing grated chocolate for garnishing (optional) *this recipe uses 500ml cream in total •
To make the meringue Preheat the oven to 140˚C. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. Whisk the egg whites and salt until just stiff. Gradually mix in the castor sugar, one spoon at a time. Whisk the mixture until glossy and thick. Use a metal spoon to fold in the vanilla, vinegar, corn flour and cocoa powder lightly but thoroughly. Spoon the meringue mixture on to the prepared baking sheet. Make four circles, each with a 20cm diameter, with fairly thick bases and raised edges. Bake for one hour then turn off the heat. Leave the meringue in the oven until completely cold (preferably overnight).

completely. Stir the vanilla into the 300ml whipped cream. Place a meringue disc on a serving platter, spread with a quarter of the chocolate mixture followed by a quarter of the whipped cream. Top with another meringue disc and repeat three more times. Garnish the final layer of chocolate and cream with fresh fruit and the optional grated chocolate.

7 NEW PHONES YOU SHOULD BE MOST EXCITED ABOUT IN 2015
By Marie Brewis | PC Advisor
We’re big fans of 2014’s Samsung Galaxy S5, the LG G3, the Sony Xperia Z3 and the iPhone 6, but we’re even more impressed by what’s to come this year. Here we reveal the 7 smartphones to be most excited about in 2015. 1. SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 If you’re a Samsung fan but would like a phone rather than a phablet, the S6 will be just what you’re looking for. We should see this phone unveiled at a Samsung Unpacked event on 1 March 2015. 2. SAMSUNG GALAXY S6 MINI The Samsung Galaxy S6 mini is likely to arrive a few months after the standard Samsung Galaxy S6 – perhaps late June or early August – and will be a more compact version of its big brother, with a slightly slimmeddown spec.
3. SAMSUNG GALAXY A7 Samsung has confirmed its Galaxy A7, a gorgeous phablet with a 6.3mm unibody metal chassis, a 5.5in Super AMOLED screen and 64-bit-octa-core processor.
The A7 is not yet for sale, but will come in both single and dual-sim variants. 4. HTC ONE M9 We are massive fans of the HTC One M8, which means we just can’t wait for a better version of this phone. The HTC One M9 is expected to follow the HTC Desire Eye with a super-selfie 13MP front camera and 20MP rear camera.
statement that the LG G3 was the very best phone you could buy in 2014. Things can only get better with the G4.
WATCH THIS SPACE Join us next month for more in-depth info about our phone-of-the-month and the latest trending apps for your smart device.
5. HTC ONE M9 PLUS / PRIME / ULTRA We’ll most likely have to wait until September to get our hands on this version. If the rumours are true, the HTC One M9 Ultra / Plus will pack a 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB RAM. It will also feature a fingerprint scanner.

6. SONY XPERIA Z4 Sony updates its flagship handsets every six months, so with the Sony Xperia Z3 having been released in September 2014, we can expect the Xperia Z4 in March at IFA (2 to 5 March 2015). There is speculation that the Sony Xperia Z4 will tie in with the new James Bond movie, with actor Daniel Craig and director Sam Mendes expected to be involved in the design. 7. LG G4 We stand by our

HEALTH
UNDERSTANDING STRESS
By: Dr Chase Webber, Health24
Before you can start learning how to manage your stress, you should have a sound understanding of what stress is and how you react to it. Stress is a term we use to explain the experience felt in mind and body when we encounter, respond or react to challenging life stressors. The scale of the reaction known as the ‘stress response’ is determined primarily by how we perceive the stressful event, our ability to cope with the stressor, and by the scale of the event. How an individual perceives and handles stress therefore plays a major role in determining their well being. Life stressors can be physical, mental or emotional stimuli, and include both imaginary or real events. The ‘stress response’ has a very physical component that is mediated via complex interactions between the nervous, hormonal and immune systems. COMMON LIFE STRESSORS What are the most common life stressors? • Major life events such as loss of a loved one, retrenchment or divorce. • Trauma such as sexual abuse, earthquakes and military combat. • Socio-economic stressors such as malnutrition, poverty and bureaucracy. • Social stressors such as relationship issues, family changes, sexuality, loneliness and social phobia. • Occupational stress such as work overload, deadlines and lack of employment. • Nutritional factors such as poor eating habits, poor nutritional intake and dieting. • Substance abuse such as caffeine, alcohol, medications, smoking and
drugs. • Financial stress. • Physical inactivity. • Chronic disease and pain. THE STRESS RESPONSE The ‘stress response’ is naturally inherent in all living things; it is directly connected to the instinct for survival. In humans it is what alerts us to danger, and is often called the ‘fight or flight response’. The body’s resources are mobilised for a primarily immediate physical response. This process of stimulus and response has a training effect that allows adaptation over time. However, when we perceive that the life stressors increase beyond our control, and/or our ability to cope diminishes, the stress response starts to negatively impact on health and well being. It is these two differing factors (perception of stressful event and coping mechanism) that determines why similar stressors affect people differently, and why stressors of seemingly differing magnitude can evoke high levels of stress. Stress has become the defining feature of the modern western world as the pace of life increases while the innate abilities of humans have remained relatively the same. Stress is on a continuum. At a positive level it is known as ‘eustress’. At an excessive or negative level it is known as ‘distress’. STRESS RESILIENCE/ STRESS

COMPETENCY Stress resilience is our ‘fitness’ to cope with stress. It is largely dictated by our physical, mental and emotional state of well being, by our perception/ paradigm of the stressful event, the environment and support structure, and by the healthiness of our stress-coping habits. Effective stress competency can be developed, and will increase stress resilience. POSITIVE COPING MECHANISMS Certain stress-coping habits allow for positive coping of stress without negative consequences, providing they are done at a safe and effective level for the individual. These include: • A positive mindset • Rest and relaxation • Regular exercise • Adequate and balanced nutrition • Good communication • Emotional support • Financial planning

NEGATIVE COPING MECHANISMS People also use certain habitual ways to cope with distress. These habits, while dealing with the immediate stress, will of themselves over time create more stress and negatively affect health.

fascinating creatures. The worm “tea” will be used in our herb and veggie garden that is being planted by Mrs Jane Twell and our EPEC (Edgemead Primary Environmental Club) this week. The produce will be shared amongst our ground staff.
To celebrate Valentine’s Day, the prefects offered a free delivery service for those who wanted to bless their ‘friends’ with a card or a gift. Collections were made for a week, and some classes even decided to draw names from a hat to ensure that everyone felt special and received something. The Grade Sevens literally wore their ‘hearts on their sleeves’ as they entered into the festivities of the day and a few of the prefects decided to dress up to add to the fun when delivering the ‘gifts’.

“SCHOOL OF COOL”
“STOP HUNGER NOW”
HSD se omgee projek vir Februarie was in samewerking met “Stop Hunger Now”.

WATERDAG
MTBS ATLETIEK

Law students from five of South Africa’s top universities competed in, and won the South African round of the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), earning the right to represent South Africa in the international phase of the world’s largest and most prestigious courtroom challenge. The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice (the judicial arm of the United Nations). The final arguments were made before three top legal officials: Judges Robert Henny and Gayaat Salie-Samuels, of the Cape High Court, and Mr Mukund Dhar of White & Case LLP, the sponsors of the tournament.

So, what was the secret ingredient that won UWC the top spot? Hard work, of course. “Each part of the process has merit,” says Hendrik Theron. “But my favourite part would have to be fighting in the trenches - in the courtroom, in heated argument against the opposing team. That’s the most exhilarating part of the moot for me.” UWC Law students really are passionate about the law, it seems. So, what’s Next? The international round of the Jessup Competition will be held in Washington, DC, USA in April this year. But first things first they need to secure funding.
