FROM OUR SIDE

DN Marketing/TA - CK 2005/017882/23 Contact No.: 083 456 2868 / 072 744 9566 - Derek Nortje E-mail: dotslearningcentre@gmail.com Web: www.dotslearningcentre.com Address: 102 Edward Street, Omnipark Building, Tygervalley, 7530

Hold on tight, I suspect that this month will go by in the blink of an eye. This is the last issue of 2015, in which AWSUM will be boasting with your school news and achievements for the year … The next issue will be filled with lots of festive treats and holiday content, just in time for you to get into Christmas mode. This year has certainly been busy, and for some perhaps more challenging than for others. But if you’re reading this, you’ve made it!

We’d like to thank all of the teachers and marketers of each school for submitting and sharing your school news, events and excellent achievements. To everyone who has started prepping for finals, we’d like to wish you the best of luck. Especially the Matric class of 2015. There’s not much left for us to say, except: heads down, pens up & go for it! All the best, Tenille & the AWSUM team.

Dot’s Learning Centre, a tutor centre, has classes from grade 1 to grade 12. The Centre with its wonderful learners and loving facilitators, won the Impak Centre of the Year award. Impak being one of the biggest home schooling providers in the Country. Dot, who has been a special needs teacher for some 35 years, saw a need about 3 years ago for learners who struggle to cope within the main stream, and who benefit smaller groups. On the 13 October, at an awards evening presented in Paarl, Dots Learning Centre was awarded this very prestigious Tutor Centre Award for 2015. Many parents are turning to this type of education as an alternative to the main stream tutoring. Dot’s Learning Centre teaches a CAPS registered programme with qualified educational facilitators, in a loving and caring environment successfully.

FOOD

Caraway slaw and orange and peach chutney dressing

1 FREE PLAY

I love the warm, sweet, almost peppery aroma of caraway seeds, with their hint of aniseed. And you can taste the sunshine in the sultanas… INGREDIENTS: For the dressing: • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 10 ml orange zest • 5 ml ginger, freshly grated • 1 red chilli, sliced • 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice • 2 tbls Wellington’s red wine vinegar • 1/4 cup sesame oil • 1 tbls honey • 2 tbls Wellington’s Peach Chutney • Salt to taste Place all ingredients in a food processor and blend.

The slaw: • 3 large green apples, skin on, sliced • 250 g green cabbage, finely shredded • 250 g red cabbage, finely shredded • 1cup walnuts, toasted • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds, toasted • 1/2 cup sultanas • 6 spring onions with tops, roughly chopped • 1/2 cup mint, chopped • 2.5 ml caraway seeds, toasted and crushed (optional) METHOD: Toss all the ingredients together and mix well with the orange dressing just before serving.

1. EXFOLIATE FOR CLEARER, SMOOTHER SKIN What it does: Exfoliation removes dead, dulling skin debris to prevent congestion and improve hydration from toners and moisturizers. When: Perform in the mornings prior to toner, moisturizer, SPF and make-up application. Tip: Make-up will last longer on an exfoliated skin! Don’t forget: After you exfoliate, follow with a hydrating body cream to seal in moisture, and always shield freshly exfoliated skin with an SPF (as recommended by the FDA). 2. KEEP SKIN HYDRATED How: Up your regimen’s level of hydration with intensive masques, perfect for use one to two times a week. Boosters are a great fit, working best when layered underneath a moisturizer. Toners are a refreshing moisturizer prep, working to even out skin porosity. Tip: Refresh with a revitalizing toner spritz at your desk, in the car, at the gym, on the plane! 3. MAKE FRIENDS WITH H20 Why: Higher temperatures and more time outdoors leads to internal dehydration, which can result in headaches and dizzy spells! What you can do: Eight 8-ounce glasses of plain, filtered water every day help maintain critical moisture balance of the body and skin, and assist in detoxification. Tip: If you drink caffeinated

beverages, you must triple the amount of water you drink! 4. WHEN IN DOUBT, APPLY (AND REAPPLY!) Why: It’s not enough to just apply sunscreen.: you must apply enough, and apply frequently. Studies indicate that most people do not apply nearly as much daylight protection as they should. How much: A teaspoon for the face. For the body, about as much as would fill a shot glass. How often: Re-apply every two hours. Tip: Stay out of the midday sun from midmorning to late afternoon whenever you can. Bonus: Today’s sophisticated formulas and technology let you select sun protection that works with your skin condition. That means you can choose oilfree, mattifying formulas, extra emollient formulas for dry skin, or chemical free formulas for sensitized, reactive skin. 5. SOOTHE OVER-EXPOSED SKIN What: You forgot the sunscreen, didn’t apply enough, or got caught in a sunny spell. What’s next: Unfortunately, the damage is done, but you don’t have to suffer in pain! Super-soothing botanicals and cooling gels can help prevent peeling and reduce redness and inflammation. How: Apply cooling balms generously over-exposed skin, preferably at the first sight of a pink glow.

WHEELS & EXAMS

HOW TO BEAT EXAMINATION STRESS

Do you sweat as the date of your examinations approaches? Is the lack of calmness causing you to under-perform? Here is some advice to tide over those anxious moments! 1. Start studying well before the exam. Make sure your schedule provides for sufficient revision time. As any good testtaker will tell you, the revisions are more important than the first time study. 2. Focus on understanding the concepts rather than mugging. Use mnemonics if rote learning is the only way out. 3. Think about the time after the exam. Visualize the happiness on your face when the stressful period is over. This works very well.

you have trouble in, that you can come to with questions. 7. Get plenty of sleep. It’s way more stressful to memorize lots of information or comprehend complicated concepts on less than 6 hours sleep. 8. Eat healthy food, since it’s often easier to function on nutritious food than junk. While sugar might be a quick source of energy, sugar lows happen pretty fast and the let-down can often be severe. 9. Exercise.

Physical exercise like running, jogging or skipping for 15-20 minutes everyday will make you feel stress free and mentally fit. 10. while taking notes, use as many diagrams, graphs, figures and illustrations as possible. This helps to make several revisions at the last moment!

11. Ask a senior or more knowledgeable person to prepare sample tests for you. If practice tests are available online or in the market, go for them. Many questions are similar to or verbatim from practice material. 12. On the day of the exam, feel happy! Think positive and keep cool! Good luck!

4. Keep reminding yourself that your hard work will not go to waste. 5. If you are afraid of tough questions, it helps to know that most questions are of average difficulty and designed to be answered correctly by most examinees. 6. Designate a “study buddy”, a classmate who is an expert in a subject

WHERE DREAMS ARE MADE Attending the Rugby World Cup 2015 is undoubtedly the top ambition for any die-hard rugby fan. But for one lucky, rugby-playing schoolboy, that dream came true. In June this year, 13-year-old Jason Breda, of Welgemoed Primary School participated in a rugby clinic, hosted by Land Rover South Africa. After a day of fun and insightful mentorship from rugby icons such as John Smit and SA Rugby referee Craig Joubert, the school boys left with signed shirts and rugby balls, and a collection of memories.

For Jason, though, the experience had just begun. Based on his enthusiasm for the sport and incredible insight into the game, he was selected to be part of Land Rover’s Rugby World Cup 2015 journey. Not only would he attend the tournament – he was also invited out onto the field with the South African rugby team. Jason has since returned home with a head full of memories, heart full of hope and even more passion for rugby. He has watched all the matches he can, and muses that he and a friend correctly predicted the outcome of most games using a World Cup fixture calendar. His latest prediction is that his must-watch player of the tournament, New Zealand fullback Nehe Milner-Skudder will be part of a success story. Along with two South African players and an Australian, the All Black has made the Rugby World Cup’s nominee list of breakout players for 2015. “This year’s World Cup experience with Land Rover has been unforgettable,” he says. “For those boys who will be going to a rugby clinic ahead of the next World Cup: this is where dreams are made!”

INTERHUIS ATLETIEK

Here are some stills from Bellpark’s Revue 2015. It is evident that teachers and family members invested a lot of time and effort in making beautiful costumes and choreographing dance moves. It was definitely a team effort that produced a spectacular showcase.

Grade 7.1’s dancing to Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

Grade 1’s performing Grease.

KPS / WELGEDACHT SPAR RELAY CHALLENGE

This was a great gala with which to start our short but busy season. Five schools joined us for an entertaining 4 x 50m relay gala at the Bellville Municipal Swimming Pool. Kenridge also entered a B team and we were extremely proud of all of the swimmers who took part. For a number of swimmers, this was the first time they had raced in an Olympic-sized pool. We had a number of undefeated teams throughout the afternoon: The girls’ U/10 A relay team, the girls’ U/12 A relay team, the boys’ U/12 A relay team and the boys’ U/14 A relay team. Well done! The following three records were broken: The girls’ U/12 breaststroke relay, and the boys’ U/12 breaststroke relay, and the boys’ U/14 breaststroke relay. Our special congratulations go to these teams.

WHO CARES? LABBIES DO!!

In awareness of cancer month, Labiance Primary School went the extra mile in showing how much we care! In association with the Social Butterfly Campaign, Labiance learners and staff wore the “who cares” tattoo, in aid to raise funds for the Hospice. Learners were eager to purchase tattoo’s and show them off! And of course, being able to wear a tattoo to school, added to the excitement. Our thoughts and prayers go out to every person who has battled with cancer, and all the families currently affected by it. We hope that our awareness has made some difference, and given hope to all survivors, because WHO CARES, well, LABBIES DO!

HOËRSKOOL STELLENBERG (t) 021 919 1029 (e) admin@stellenberg.org.za

STELLENBERG HIGH SCHOOL’S 2016 STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS HAVE STARTED THEIR NEW TERM WITH A BANG.

Their mission for 2016 is to “Fuel the FIRE”, where FIRE stands for the school’s key values: Faith, Integrity, Responsibility and Excellence. Their key focus will be on promoting school pride and respect among learners. The head leaders will further support this vision with their main project, Lead Stellies. Lead Stellies is based on the principle that small changes made by individuals can make a big difference to society. Examples include saying thank you, greeting people and picking up a piece of litter rather than walking over it. Their activities for the 4th term included a pudding evening, hockey-5-a-side tournament and they organised ice cream for the junior grades and Burger King for the grade 10’s during break time. They also collected stuffed animals / teddies for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and raised funds for CANSA to support

breast cancer awareness and research. They are also colleting non-perishable foods to give to the school’s workers as a small thank you for their dedication and hard work which will be handed over during the annual worker’s tea in December, hosted by the student council. The school is very proud of this dynamic and passionate group of learners that sacrifice so much of their time, often unrecognised, to make a difference to the school and society.
