This October, CANSA highlights the importance of screening and early detection for breast cancer as part of its Women’s Health Campaign. Apart from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women of all races, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 35 in South Africa, according to the 2007 National Cancer Registry. “We encourage all women to conduct regular self-examinations once a month. Know how your breasts look and feel – discuss any changes you observe with your health practitioner. It’s also very important to go for a mammogram every year from the age of 40,” states Elize Joubert, CANSA’s Acting CEO. She adds, “Women need to be aware of the screening opportunities available. We have mobile health clinics travelling to remote areas throughout South Africa”. Reduce risk through regular examinations Many breast lumps are harmless, but they should all be checked. It is important for women to do monthly breast self-examinations and to go for regular clinical breast examinations. Symptom-free women of 40 and
older should go for a mammogram (a special X-ray to detect lumps in the breast), every year. Prevention and early detection The most effective weapon against cancer is knowledge. If you consider that one in four individuals may be affected by the disease during their lifetime, you will realise how powerful knowledge is in terms of risk reduction, prevention and early detection. CANSA’s prevention and early detection programmes and campaigns contain material re a balanced diet and promote a balanced lifestyle that includes regular exercise, not smoking, staying safe in the sun, doing regular self-examinations and undergoing regular medical checkups. All prevention and early detection programmes and campaigns are underpinned by research. Other cancers affecting women: • Fallopian tube cancer • Ovarian cancer • Vaginal cancer • Vaginal clear-cell adenosarcoma • Vulvar cancer • Uterine cancer How women can reduce their cancer risk: Be aware of the importance of the early detection of cancer. This enables more effective treatment and a better chance of recovery.
Acknowledge the importance of a healthy balanced lifestyle: not smoking, being sun smart, going for preventative screenings and avoiding known cancer-causing factors. We also encourage women to reduce their risk of female cancers by: • Avoiding hormone therapy • Using condoms to help prevent sexually transmitted infections such as the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is a high risk factor for cervical cancer • Consulting a healthcare professional on the HPV vaccine • Consulting a healthcare professional for advice on appropriate screening tests if there is a family history of cancer Mobile health clinics CANSA has nine mobile health clinics travelling to remote areas throughout South Africa in October to reach women and men who would otherwise not have access to screening. They offer the following: • Clinical breast examinations • Pap smear screening tests for cervical cancer • Prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests for men to detect prostate abnormalities • Cholesterol test • Blood pressure test

4. Mix glue, cornstarch and warm water in a large container until all lumps are gone, then cover each balloon in petroleum jelly (using rubber gloves for this cuts down on the mess). 5. Feed the twine through the glue mixture until it is coated, then start draping it around the balloon. 6. Wrap the ball vertically to a comfortable tightness, then horizontally. Once ball is wrapped to your liking, use a piece of twine to suspend it from the shower bar (or drying space of your choosing). 7. Allow balls to dry for 24 hours. Then, pop the balloons. It’s like magic! Spray the balls with clear, fast-drying spray paint. 8. Once they’re dry, insert the lights, and you’re ready to party like it’s 1999!

Lamb shank with bacon, smoked chilli and apple. SERVES 4–6.
This lamb shank recipe has a deep, smoky flavour with a hint of chilli. To sample the best that shanks have to offer it’s vital that they be cooked for a minimum of 21⁄2 hours. Shanks can’t be rushed. YOU’LL NEED: • 375 ml (11⁄2 C) apple juice • 2 large dried chillies • 250 ml (1 C) seedless raisins • 60 ml (¼ C) olive oil • Salt and freshly ground pepper • 4–6 large lamb shanks • 2 large red onions, sliced • 6–8 large cloves garlic, crushed • 250 g chopped rindless bacon • 15 ml sweet smoked paprika • 3 bay leaves • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary • 25 ml (11⁄2 Tbsp) chopped • fresh parsley • 1 x 400 g can whole peeled • tomatoes with juice • 1 x 70 g can tomato paste • 5 ml (1 tsp) sugar • 5 whole black peppercorns • 750 ml (3 C) Pinotage • 30 ml (2 Tbsp) red wine vinegar WHAT TO DO:
• Combine the apple juice, chillies and raisins in a small bowl and leave to soak for 3 hours. Blend or liquidise the mixture until smooth. It

does not matter if the raisins are not completely blended as they will add texture to the dish. Set aside. • Heat the olive oil in a large, heavybottomed saucepan. Season the lamb well and brown the shanks, one at a time, until golden brown. Remove from the saucepan and set aside. • Sauté the onions, garlic and bacon in the same saucepan until soft. • Add the paprika, bay leaves, rosemary, parsley, tomatoes with juice, tomato paste, sugar and peppercorns. Stir in the raisin mixture and cook for 5 minutes, stirring continuously. • Preheat the oven to 170 °C. • Transfer the lamb to a large ovenproof casserole dish, big enough to hold all the shanks. Add the red wine and sauce and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Alternatively, use a deep roasting pan and cover the meat with a layer of baking paper, followed by two layers of foil secured tightly around the edge.

• Cook for 21⁄2–3 hours or until the meat comes away from the bone. Check on the liquid halfway through the cooking time. Add a little more apple juice to the cooking liquid if too much has evaporated during the prolonged cooking. Make sure the casserole is tightly covered again before returning the dish to the oven. • Once the shanks are tender, remove the casserole from the oven, remove the shanks from the sauce and set aside to keep warm. • Reduce the sauce by bringing the remaining liquid to the boil. • Cook rapidly until the sauce is thick and has reduced by half. • Adjust seasoning and stir in the red wine vinegar. Transfer the lamb to a serving platter and spoon the sauce over the top. • Garnish with chopped fresh herbs and serve with mashed potato.

Tydens skool en universiteit het dit vir my die eerstespan hokkie, toekennings en leiersposisies gebring en hierdie prestasies het verseker vir my deure oopgemaak. Maar as volwassene laat dit my ontnugterd oor hoe ‘n sertifikaat en ‘n toekenning my gedrag dryf, en die moeilikste van als – hoe ek my identiteit en selfwaarde daaraan koppel. “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” - Aristotle In my kop het dit vir my sin gemaak om hard te werk vir dit wat ek wil hê, maar ek het nooit as kind geleer om na my eie hart te luister oor wat dit droom nie. Ek weet my ma het die beste bedoelings daarmee gehad, omdat sy potensiaal in my raak gesien het. Ongelukkig verstaan ek ook nou as volwassene dat my ma se eie onvervulde drome ook ‘n aandeel daaraan het. As volwassene is dit soveel moeiliker om nou te moet leer om nie my ma se hartsdrome te vervul nie, maar my eie. Dat kinders strawwe druk in skole ervaar om te presteer, is ‘n werklikheid. Wanneer dit met ouers se onderlinge agendas (bewustelik of onbewustelik) van hulle onvervulde drome gekombineer word, is dit gevaarlik. So hoe kan ons kinders help om van
kleins af nie net met hulle koppe te verstaan nie, maar ook met hulle hart en siel hulle eie drome na te jaag? Dip-Dyed Napkins I am always looking for the perfect cloth napkins to use for when we have guests over for dinner. The problem I have is I can either never find any I like, or if I do like them, they’re stained and dull after many MANY washes. That’s why I decided to revamp my old napkins to make them look exactly how I wanted. I went with a gray color to be more of an accent than a focal point on my table, and I have to tell you, this is a DIY I am loving the outcome of! Here is how you can make your own …
DIY Dip-Dyed Napkins What You’ll Need: - 4 fabric napkins - fabric dye - Steel bowl
Directions:
Step 1: Following the directions on your fabric dye, make the dye! Make sure it is well stirred and the dye is completely dissolved. Step 2: Next, dip your napkins into the dye. I wanted mine to still be mostly white, so I just dipped the napkins in about 1/4 of the way. Let them sit and soak up the dye. Step 3: Once they’re dyed, rinse them out with cold water to let the dye set. And you’re done! Use these modern napkins at your next dinner party!

Laerskool Bellville Noord 6 OCTOBER 2014 Kaskarkenades
Op 2 Oktober was dit Laerskool BellvilleNoord se jaarlikse Kaskarkenades. Van vroeg af het die verskillende grade se klasse mekaar die stryd aangesê en probeer om meer rondtes af te lê as die ander. Die Ouervereniging het flink sake gedoen en gesorg vir vol magies en nat kele. Na afloop van die grade, het die twee kleurgroepe (Blou en Goud) se graad 6 en 7’s mekaar gepak en hier was die Goue-span uiteindelik die wenners. Ons moet ons buurskool, Laerskool Bellpark, bedank wat hul kaskarre aan ons geleen het omdat ons eie kaskarre tans verander word en nog nie beskikbaar was vanaf die werkswinkel nie. Hier is ‘n paar foto’s van die deelnemers.

Laerskool Bellville-Noord se jaarlikse Ouervereniging Gholfdag was ondanks ‘n kleiner speelveld, weer ‘n groot sukses. Dit het plaasgevind op Donderdag, 16 Oktober, by Bellville Gholfklub. Arnold is in graad 7 en speel al die afgelope paar jaar saam met sy pa in die gholfdag. Hul was ook in 2011 en 2012 die kampioene.
Hier is vlnr. mnre. Jacques Viviers en Johannes Terblanche (albei graad 6-onderwysers by BN), asook mnr. Mostert (graad 7-onderwysers) saam met twee oud-leerders, Janno Mostert en Divan de Jager. Janno was verlede jaar se wenner. Albei is tans in matriek aan Bellville Hoërskool.

Juffrou Claudette Schutte (graad 3-onderwyser) oorhandig die getekende WP-trui aan een van ons trotse ouers, mnr. André Witte, wat die hoogste bod daarop ingestel het.
4 BN’ers onder top tien in die land
Twee van BN se leerders het silwer medaljes by die SA Gimnastiek Kampioenskappe (die naweek van 10 Oktober) verwerf. Alice Hawksley (gr. 7) het silwer medaljes vir Tuimel Vlak WAG, asook Dubbel Mini-trampolien Vlak 3 ontvang. Sy het hiermee ook seker gemaak dat sy Wes-Kaap kleure ontvang. Nikita Chambers (gr. 6) het ook ‘n silwer medalje vir Tuimel Vlak 3 gewen. Johnny Drake (gr. 3) en Marzanne Fivaz (gr. 6) het onderskeidelik ‘n neënde en sesde plek behaal. Die hele land se beste gimnaste was hier teenwoordig en al vier hierdie gimnaste het plek in die top tien van hul afdelings of ouderdomsgroepe behaal!

Rocco het Suid-Afrika vanjaar verteenwoordig by die Statebondspele in Skotland, waar hy deurgedring het tot die finale rondte van spiesgooi vir mans en ‘n sesde plek behaal het. WHO CARES? LABBIES DO!!
In awareness of cancer month, Labiance Primary School went the extra mile in showing how much we care! In association with the Social Butterfly Campaign, Labiance learners and staff wore the “who cares” tattoo, in aid to raise funds for the Hospice. Learners were eager to purchase tattoo’s and show
them off! And of course, being able to wear a tattoo to school, added to the excitement. We dressed our school in pink and although all this was enjoyable, we never forget the meaning behind it all. We are proud to say that we raised R6000.00 and we will carry this special time in our hearts forever. Our thoughts and prayers go out to every person who
has battled with cancer, and all the families currently affected by it. We hope that our awareness has made some difference, and given hope to all survivors, because WHO CARES, well, LABBIES DO! Written by: Chariza Jordaan – Educator Grade 3.

Tydens ons jaarlikse kaskardag kry elke klasgroep die geleentheid om hulself op die een of ander manier uit te beeld. Ons Graad 7 dogters lyk soos regte “ pippie Langkouse “.
Elvis Blue in aksie by Laerskool De Kuilen
Drie laerskole, Mikro, Bastion en De Kuilen het ons ouergemeenskap vermaak toe hulle saam met Elvis Blue by ‘n musiekaand opgetree. Hierdie wonderlike kinderstemme gee mens hoendervleis. Al drie die skoolkore het afsonderlike stukke ook gesing.Maar die hoogtepunt van die aand was toe al drie kore saam met Elvis gesing het.

Laerskool De Kuilen het onlangs ‘n feesdinee aangebied om die skool se 75ste verjaardag te vier. Daar was reeds verskeie feesvieringe gedurende die jaar waarby die leerders geleeenheid gehad het om die skool se verjaardag te vier. Daar is onder andere vroër vanjaar ‘n foto op die rugbyveld geneem van al die leerders in die vorm van die syfers 75, die leerders het kollewyntjies versier en dit geniet en in feeskonserte is gehou waar die leerders met hul kulturele prestasies die gaste vermaak het. Die geleentheid is bygewoon deur ‘n groot getal oudleerlinge, oudonderwysers en skoolhoofde wat voorheen by die skool was. Dit was terselfdertyd ‘n wonderlike geleentheid
vir die groot getal oud-onderwyseres om mekaar weer te sien na soveel jare wat hulle saam gewerk het. Die skool het ook in die afgelope klompie jare 13 skoolhoofde opgelewer. Dit ‘n groot prestasie dat een skool soveel skoolhoofde opgelewer het. Erkenning is verleen aan 16 personeellede wat meer as 20 jaar diens aan die skool gelewer het. Dit is baie uniek dat daar 16 personeellede by een skool is wat tussen 23 en 36 jaar aan een enkele skool verbonde is. Die persoon met die langste diens aan die skool gelewer het, is Mev. Gillian van der Merwe wat spog met 36 jaar diens aan die skool. Sy het ook haar onderwysloopbaan hier begin en is tans ‘n departementshoof.

When the theme of “Movie Magic” became a reality rather than merely a concept, the creative juices of all the Aristea teachers started to flow. Not only was the play fun to participate in, but most probably, as quoted by someone, “the best team building of the year!” Die toneel het grepies uit veskeie bekende lokettreffers bevat. Daar was ons eie Titanic wat aangeval word deur
‘n “Pirate van die Caribbean” by name Jack (S)parrow wat dan verlief raak en wegloop met Jack (van Titanic) terwyl die nonne brigade van “Sister Act” heimlik “He will follow HIM” agterna sing. Dit was ook duidelik dat een van die nonne die bottel ontdek het en nie meer so ‘n kuise bestaan gevoer het nie! Chicago was myns insiens uitstaande in vele aspekte. Ongelooflike choreografie en entoesiasme het hierdie
blyspel na die hoogtes gevoer. Die span van “Rocky Horror” het die gehoor aan hul voete gehad. Of liewer, stiletto’s! Die “Time Warp” finale het die gehoor laat skree op soeke na nog vermaak. Ongelukkig is ons akteurs en aktrises se tyd kosbaar en kon ons na die Grand Finale elders rustig gaan nabetragting hou. Aristea Onnies - Jul is voorwaar Oscar wenners!
Laerskool Brackenfell Die Brackies Se “Culture Vultures” Kultuuraand 2014
Krieketkliniek 2014
Die krieketafrigters van die Laerskool Brackenfell het ‘n krieketkliniek vir die graad een tot drie leerders op Donderdag, 18 Oktober 2014, aangebied. Op Vrydag, 19 Oktober 2014, het die afrigters weer die toerusting uitgepak om te verseker dat die graad vyf tot sewes ook van hierdie oefening en afrigting kan ontvang. Daar was egter meer leerders as die vorige dag betrokke en spesiale aandag is aan individuele en ook spanvaardighede gegee. Hierdie geleentheid was verseker ‘n boublok tot vele suksesse vir die toekoms van die Laerskool Brackenfell. Baie dankie aan die afrigters vir elke ekstra myl wat hulle bereid is om vir die leerders te loop.
Laerskool Brackenfell het sy jaarlikse kultuuraand op die 25ste September 2014 in die skoolsaal gehou. Die toppresteerders in die gedigte kategorie van graad R tot graad 7 het die geleentheid gekry om die gehoor te vermaak. Die juniorkoor, dogterskamerkoor sowel as die Graad 7 spreekkoor o.l.v Mej. Beulah Coetzee, het tot die aand se genot bygedra. Ons was baie geseënd om meer as 500 ouers daar te kon hê. Baie dankie aan al die onderwysers wat ekstra tyd opgeoffer het om hierdie leerders af te rig.

We had our annual Grade 7 Market day and the young entrepreneurs learned a great deal from this experience. The entrepreneurs were very creative in manufacturing, marketing, presenting and selling their products to the rest of the school. Our school is very excited about these young leaders in the market place.

Vir die 3e jaar in ‘n ry het Laerskool Welgemoed se VSCV tak weer ‘n trollieresies gehou op 19 Sep. Met ‘n dag vol opwinding, pret en lag, samel hul jaarliks geld in vir die Paarl Skool vir Gestremdes. 110 kinders het deelgeneem enop die manier gee die Bleshoendertjies van Welgemoed gestalte aan die slagspreuk: “Blessies are blessed to be a blessing”.
Laerskool Welgemoed Wintersportseisoen Laerskool Welgemoed het die wintersportseisoen op ‘n prettige manier afgesluit. Die o/13 A netbalspan het die onderwyserspan omtrent laat les opsê. Terwyl die mini-netbal spanne teen hulle eie mammas en pappas gespeel het (met ‘n paar verbuiging van die
reels natuurlik). Die onderskeie hokkie en rugbyspanne het ook teen mekaar meegeding op die netbalbaan. Na die tyd is daar ‘n heerlike braai in die Blessienes gehou waar ouers en kinders saam met die afrigters vir ou laas lekker kon saam kuier.

On the 2nd October 2014 BTHS had their Matric Masked Ball. The ladies were remarkably dazzling and the gentlemen were quite impressing. During the evening mocktails, mysterious masks, a Ball King & Queen, a Mr and Miss Personality and indeed heaps of dancing and glee were part of the enjoyment.

Weightlifting Championships The South African Weightlifting Championships took place at HTS Bellville on 10-11 October 2014. Athletes from all 9 provinces participated. HTS Bellville learners will soon also be exposed to the code of weightlifting. Watch this space... Mr Koopman met recently with the Chairman of the Weightlifting Federation, Mr Kevin du Plooy (left) and National Coach, Mr Aveenash Pandoo, who will be giving training to one of our teachers. 40 learners indicated their interest in the sport.
