Die interskole bepaling tussen Paul Roos en Grey het ’n ryk geskiedenis wat sedert 1967 dateer en is ongetwyfeld ’n hoogtepunt op die Paul Roos Gimnasium-kalender. Die naweek is volgepak met 13 verskillende sportkodes en kultuuraktiwiteite, met ’n totaal van 75 Paul Roos-spanne wat meeding teen Grey Kollege!

Die dag van interskole het aangebreek! ‘n Dag waarop ons diepgewortelde bande en ons liefde vir sport en vriendskap vier. Die dag wanneer Grey en Oranje op Stellenbosch toesak vir die interskole waaroor die hele jaar gepraat word en waarna alle voorbereiding lei.
Mag ons in geesdrif en respek mekaar aanspoor en aanmoedig, nie net as mededingers nie, maar as waardige verteenwoordigers van ons skole. Laat ons die waardes van uithouvermoë, deursigtigheid en samewerking uitdra en in hierdie gesamentlike tradisie laat weerspieël.

Wat kan die skool en ouers hierdie jaar te wagte wees van julle span?
Dit is ‘n span wat met baie trots die skool sal verteenwoordig. `n Span met ‘n besonderse spangees wat baie vir mekaar speel, ‘n span met ‘n baie hoë werksetiek en ‘n span wat hoop om te inspireer deur nederig te bly en `n voorbeeld te probeer stel.
Hoe is die samestelling van julle span vir die Interskole? Enige beserings?
Ons is ongelooflik trots op ons vyf SA-spelers. Hulle bou voort op die nalatenskap van Paul Roos Gimnasium en dien as inspirasie vir baie. Daar sal ook altyd een of twee beserings wees en dit is net belangrik om aanpasbaar te wees. Beste wat ons kan doen is om as ‘n groep die skool en span eerste te stel.

Waar sou jy sê lê julle krag hierdie jaar?
Dit is ‘n baie selfstandige groep seuns. Daar is goeie leiers in die span wat verantwoordelikheid vat. Die span weet hoe om as ‘n span saam te speel. Hulle ondersteun mekaar goed en stel hoë standaarde in oefeninge en weet waar hulle sterkpunte lê.
Wat is jou filosofie as `n afrigter?
Ek glo in ‘n holistiese, gelukkige en positiewe omgewing waar die vaardigheid van die speler op die afrigter reflekteer en die toewyding wat die speler bring, op die speler reflekteer. Ek wil graag `n omgewing skep wat die beste uit elke speler bring en vir die individu geleentheid gee om sy potensiaal te bereik.

Ek glo dat die span deur die jaar geleer het om vir mekaar te werk en opofferings te maak. Ons vertrou dat dit ook op die veld sigbaar sal wees. Hierdie tipe geleenthede is vir elke skoolseun ‘n hoogtepunt op sy kalender en elke speler is ongelooflik opgewonde om sy heel beste vir die span daardie dag te gee.
Hoe berei julle span in die week tot aanloop van Interskole voor?
Ons glo en vertrou in ons proses wat weekliks gevolg word. Ons sal nie daaraan verander nie. Maandae sit ons duidelik die plan en “mental” aanslag vir die week in plek. Die res van die week word dan spandeer om die uitvoering daarvan so korrek as moontlik te kry.
Waar sou jy sê lê julle krag hierdie jaar?
Ek glo ons krag lê in ons vermoë om vir mekaar te speel en die manier hoe voor en agterspelers saam speel. Elkeen se bydra is kardinaal vir die span en die spelers weet presies wat die span van elke individu verwag.
Wie het die grootste invloed op jou as afrigter in jou lewe gehad? Is daar iemand na wie jy opkyk?
Franco Smith en Andre Tredoux het as ‘n jong afrigter baie inspraak in my afrigting gemaak. Tans is ek ongelooflik geseënd met mede-afrigters in ons span wat elke dag ongelooflike invloed op my het.
Watter boodskap dra jy aan jou span oor net voor hulle op die veld hardloop?
Hierdie sal baie van ons se laaste kans wees om ‘n inskrywing in daardie boekie van herinneringe te maak. Kom ons gaan maak genoeg brandhout bymekaar sodat ons eendag lekker om die vuur kan sit.

How is the composition of the team for this weekend? Are there any injuries?
We are a really tight group and play for each other and the badge. Unfortunately our fullback Mathew Seymore is out for injury, but apart from that we have a fit squad.

Definitely, we always put our jerseys on at the same time in the changing room and always shake the rectors hand right before running out which is always a huge tradition for us

Ons is sonder die SA Skole-verteenwoordigers, maar dit is beslis nie ‘n swakker span nie, die plaasverangers is op net so ‘n hoë standaard as die oorspronklikes en ons oefen in elk geval altyd saam.
Are you happy with your results as team of the year?
We are extremely happy with the results of the year, but still looking to improve on our past performances this weekend.
What do you expect from Grey College on Saturday?
We are expecting a physical game at a very high pace. We know Grey plays a very expansive game and also expecting a good set piece from them.
What does being captain of Paul Roos Gymnasium mean to you?
It means everything to me, it’s a huge honour and especially captaining a school like Paul Roos with so much passion and history it is a dream I have had ever since walking into the gates at Paul Roos.
How do you as a team deal with the expectations of your fans and spectators?
We believe that we must control what we can control and focus on specific jobs on the field,with the game being at Markötter this year the boys are excited to hear the crowd on the day and use it to fuel them.
Which famous player (any sport) do you look up to and why?
Personally I look up to Steven Kitsoff for he went to Paul Roos and embodies how far hard work can get you, he also attended Paul Roos and I hope one day I can reach the heights he has reached.
Is daar enige beserings? Nee, daar is egter ‘n paar wat pas uit beserings teruggekeer het.
Is julle gelukkig met julle resultate die jaar? Tevrede en dankbaar. Ons vasval teen Jeppe het ons as ‘n span gehelp om beter saam te werk en om niks van self sprekend te aanvaar nie. Dit het ons nie gebreek nie, inteendeel, dit het ons versterk.
Wat verwag jy van Paul Roos Saterdag?
Hulle is ‘n baie goed gekondisioneerde span. Ons weet daar is ‘n onoorwonne seisoen op die spel vir PRG. Hulle gaan hard vir ons kom, maar hulle kan maar weet: ons gaan net so hard op daardie veld uitgaan.
Wat beteken dit vir jou om kaptein van Grey Kollege te wees?
Dit gaan nie oor my nie. Die sukses hang van die hele span af en die kaptein is niks belangriker as die res nie.
julle ondersteuners en toeskouers? Ons steur ons regtig nie aan die verwagtinge of kommentaar, veral kritiek van buite nie. Dit gaan ons niks baat nie. Ons fokus op die wedstryd wat voorlê en om optimaal daarvoor voorbereid te wees. En dan vertrou ons op die Here en hoop om nie ons ondersteuners in die steek te laat nie.
Na watter bekende speler (enige sport) kyk jy na op en hoekom?
My pa (Louis Theron) – hy het Shimlas en Vrystaat gespeel. Hy gee my ‘n opregte antwoord wanneer ek iets wil uitvind oor die spel en oor die lewe in die algemeen.

What can the school and parents expect from your team this Interschools?
We will be the best version of ourselves and play with immense pride and passion for our school.
How does your team prepare in the week leading up to Interschools, both physically and mentally?
Honestly, we prepare the same way we would for any other fixture, but with a lot more hype. We try to block out the noise and control our emotions.
Where would you say your strength lies this year?
Our strength lies in our character as a team. We have come from behind many times and often had our backs against the wall, yet we always find a way to turn it around. We are a team that never gives up and plays for each other. There have been some iconic games and performances already in 2024.
Who has had the biggest influence on you as a coach in your life? Is there someone you look up to?
My support system has had the biggest influence on me. Without them, I am nothing. From my wife and family to close friends and colleagues, they are the ones that keep me going when it’s tough. They provide advice and perspective. They have all planted seeds in this journey that I am on and are all legends in their own way. The people who are with you when things aren’t going well make a huge influence.
What message do you convey to your team just before they run onto the field?
If someone is sitting in the stands and watching us for the first time, what will they say about us and you?

How is the composition of the team for this weekend? Are there any injuries?
I think we have a young, fired-up team that is super keen to end our season on a high. Our team is made up of some of the best youngsters in schoolboy hockey who understand that our strength is in moving the ball as a team.
Are you happy with your results this year?
As the season comes to an end, there are always a few little niggles here and there, but the squad as a whole is fit for the derby.
What do you expect from Grey College on Saturday?
Our team has surpassed everyone’s expectations. We are a young side building towards a very dominant 2025-2026, but our team this year has achieved one of our best seasons in the history of the programme. With Grey, you always get a hard fight and tussle. The love and pride for the jersey are very prominent in both schools. Being the last 60 minutes of both sets of matrics’ school careers, I think it will be a high-level fight.
What does being captain of Paul Roos mean to you?
Being a captain of the Paul Roos First Team means so much more than the individual itself at this moment. I believe it’s about representing all the captains and teams that have come before you and all those that will come after, which makes it an absolute privilege.
Many people will want to know how your day goes from the big game to your run. Do you have any rituals or traditions?
I think it’s important to understand that as big as the match may be, it is just another 60-minute game of hockey. This means the day itself calls for no new actions or different processes. I will remain relaxed, keep the vibe up with some music, and enjoy our last 60 minutes as a group.
How do you as a team deal with the expectations of your fans and spectators?
What is special about this group is that we understand we don’t need to worry about anything outside our group and team circle. We know that if we follow our style of play and strengths, all “expectations and pressure” will be met in any case.
Which famous player (any sport) do you look up to and why?
My sports role model is Michael Jordan due to his elite mentality and work ethic. He embodies what sport should mean to people and how it should look if you want to be the best.

Passion, hard work, and a never-give-up attitude!
How does your team prepare in the week leading up to a big game such as this weekend against Paul Roos?
An inter-school match of this magnitude requires extra motivation, so it’s more about keeping the players calm and focused, believing in the process we have prepared during the week. Physically, it’s more about going through tactical scenarios than pushing the boys very hard.
Where would you say your strength lies this year?
We are a very well-rounded team. If we had to choose, I would believe our strength lies in our defensive structures.
Who has had the biggest influence on you as a coach in your life? Is there someone you look up to?

We have a fully fit team who are fully motivated and ready for the game.

What do you expect from Paul Roos on Saturday?
Calum Giles – Coach in England (I had the privilege of playing and being coached by him in England). Paul Revington – Great Britain coach (He coached me at university).
What message do you convey to your team just before they run onto the field?
Express your talents to the country!
Yes, we have worked extremely hard this year, and this has been reflected in our results, being unbeaten in all our Interschools.
We expect a very tough game from one of the best teams in the country, but we know we are ready and will be up for the challenge.
What does being captain of Grey College mean to you?
It is a massive privilege for me to captain the First Hockey Team. Leading my team out onto the field every game is a feeling and honour I can’t put into words.
Do you have any rituals or traditions before the game?
We just stick together and motivate ourselves throughout the day, getting ourselves physically and mentally ready for the game in the evening.
How do you as a team deal with the expectations of your fans and spectators?
We use the crowd and supporters as motivation to play our game. The expectations only fuel us to do better and leave everything on the field.
Which famous player (any sport) do you look up to and why?
I look up to Virat Kohli. He is an exceptional leader who is extremely passionate and hardworking. He uses his emotions to motivate those around him, and the players who play under him give everything on the field because of his leadership.
