This could be you in Antarctica! Five South African students from across the country will be given a once in a lifetime experience, an allexpenses paid adventure to Antarctica. You will explore this incredible landscape while learning more about the diverse ecosystem, sustainable and conservation. HOW TO ENTER Get inspired and write a mini essay answering the following question in 100 words or more: “If saving the environment is a global problem – how can YOU help? What can you do in your own hometown that you believe will make a positive impact on the planet and possibly Antarctica?” This competition is open to all 2021 matric students in South Africa. You don’t need to be a top student, you just need to showcase your passion for conservation and the environment. All entries need to be in by 31 October 2021.

Cricket SA National Camp Tiger At Cricket Sa u.17 National Camp. HTS Daniel Pienaar’s 1st team cricketer, Cameron Williams, attended Cricket South Africa’s National u.17 training camp in Port Elizabeth. Several of the current SA u.19 players also attended the camp. SA u.19 head coach, Shukri Conrad, as well as some of South Africa’s leading coaches Neil McKenzie, Malibongwe Maketa, Baakier Abrahams and Vincent Barnes, was amongst the high profile coaches at the camp. SA u.19 team are preparing for the ICC u.19 World Cup in West Indies early next year and we wish them well with their preparation.

GREY HIGH SCHOOL President’s Award
Heads of Rugby and Cricket
Thomas Daniels and Zach Heynes from Grey High School achieved Bronze for the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.
Grey High School recently announced two new sporting appointments – Robbi Kempson as the new Head of Rugby and Deon Kruis as Head of Cricket. Capped 37 times for the Springboks, Kempson joins the Gqeberha school after his long tenure at the EP Kings. After a highly successful playing career which took him from the Sharks to Western Province and then to Irish province Ulster, Kempson became involved in professional coaching in 2007. Kempson has been heavily involved with the EP Kings since 2010 in roles varying from the Head of their Academy to Head Coach of the Southern Kings. His passion for the development of both players and coaches will stand him in good stead at Grey High. Deon Kruis also enjoyed a distinguished playing career of 20 seasons of first class Cricket, taking over 400 wickets. Having played for Northerns, Griquas and Free State in South Africa, he also had a five-year stint with Yorkshire County Cricket Club. He has since turned to coaching, consulting for both North West University and Northern Cape, and is also part of the Supersport commentary team. Deon has a wealth of cricketing experience and will add a great deal of value to the Grey Cricket Coaching department. Deon Kruis commented “It is an honour to be involved with Grey High with all the years of history and culture. I will try to bring a new perspective to an already great system.”

3D Printer for Grey’s Programming Club The 4th Industrial Revolution is alive and well at Grey High School. The school recently purchased a 3D printer and various IoT (Internet of Things) device electronics for use in the Programming Club for senior students in Information Technology. The club comprises 5 groups, and each group received a Raspberry Pi 4, Ardunio Uno, electronics start-up kit, 45 various input/output sensors, and various other electronic devices such as: stepper motors, servo motors, LED displays, etc. The groups will make use of the 3D printer to print design materials to pair with the electronics, starting their engineering journey towards fields such as: Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, and Robotics, Design, and many more.

Twee van Framesby se tennisspelers het aan ‘n Interpro Toernooi in Kaapstad deelgeneem. Dit was ‘n naweek met baie wedstryde en sterk kompetisie, maar ons leerders het saam met hulle spanmaats deurgedruk. Leila Nel het die EC Aloes verteenwoordig. Hulle het teen verskeie spanne van die Wes-Kaap deelgeem. Die EC Aloes behaal ‘n algehele tweede plek. Baie geluk Leila. Keaton Holm het sy span as nommer 1 op die ranglys verteenwoordig. Dit was ‘n moeilike toernooi, aangesien hy in die o.19-groep gespeel het. Dit was op die ou end ‘n naweek van goeie ondervinding en elke speler het sy/haar beste gegee.

Vier van Framesby se leerders die voorreg gehad om aan die Suid-Afrikaanse Wiskunde Olimpiade se spankompetisie deel te neem. Hulle het uitstekend gevaar. Tiaan Bouwer (Gr. 12), Tiaan de Beer (Gr. 11), Juan Whittle (Gr. 10) en Anri de Beer (Gr. 8) was vier van slegs 24 leerders wat op grond van hul puik uitslae in die eerste twee rondtes van die Suid-Afrikaanse Wiskunde Olimpiade vir die Oos-Kaap (PE) se spanne gekies is. Die Oos-Kaap (PE) senior span (met Tiaan de Beer as onderkaptein) het sesde van die 87 spanne landswyd geëindig en die junior span (met Anri de Beer as onderkaptein) agste uit 92 spanne landswyd. Baie geluk aan elkeen van jul vier met die bydrae wat julle tot hierdie spanne se skitterende prestasies gelewer het – julle laat ons trots voel! Die hoogtepunt van hierdie dag se uitslae, is die feit dat Tiaan Bouwer die toekenning vir die beste prestasie in die senior span met ‘n fenominale totaal van 92% ontvang het! Enigeen wat iets van Wiskunde Olimpiades weet, sal besef dat só ‘n persentasie iets besonders is. Tiaan, ons sê vir jou baie dankie vir die mooi en nederige manier waarop jy deur jou hele hoërskoolloopbaan Framesby se naam keer op keer by Wiskunde Olimpiades hoog gehou het. Ons is ongelooflik trots op jou en is bly jy kon jou reeks van prestasies op hierdie hoë noot afsluit.

Hierdie Wolramme het by die onlangse Meyer Sauerman rugbyproewe goeie spel gelewer en is gekies vir die OP o.16 span. Marlow spog ook met twee o.18 OP Rugbyspelers. Gerhard du Plessis (Pote) en Eric Wagenaar (Trompie), is gekies vir die span. Hulle neem gewoonlik aan die Cravenweek deel, maar SA rugby het ongelukkig dié nasionale toernooi vir vanjaar afgestel. Sherrif Jan Els, Gr. 9 leerder van Marlow, is gekies vir die OP o.15 rugbyspan. Hierdie span is baie sterk omrede daar geen voorskrifte is vir die kies van hierdie provinsiale span nie.

Laerskool Cradock het kragte teen Queen’s College en Balmoral gemeet. Die middag was koel en goeie gees het alom geheers. Ons maak met trots bekend dat Laerskool Cradock as die wenspan opgeëindig het. Laerskool Cradock het met 170 punte teenoor 85 punte in totaal gewen. Union High Learner at Provincial Tennis Tournament Grade 8 learner, Tara Ferreira travelled to Gqeberha to represent the Eastern Cape as part of their u.13 tennis team in an Inter-Provincial Tournament against the Western Cape and Eden District. Following quality tennis, fantastic team spirit and a lot of new friendships made, Tara’s team finished 3rd overall out of a total of six competing teams.

Bohlokwa Tsemane, ‘n Gr. 11 dogter, was gekies vir die o.17 Oos-Kaap span en Chumikazi Qaqane is gekies vir die o.18 Oos-Kaap span. Hulle gaan later die jaar deel neem aan die SASN Telkom Challenge Netbal toernooi in Pretoria. Knapgedaan, dames!

Lenro en Liané Krüger neem deel aan ‘n ASA-byeenkoms in Bloemfontein en beide vaar uitstekend. Liané behaal ‘n 1ste plek in die dogters o.11 gewigstoot met ‘n afstand van 7.82 m. Voorwaar ‘n puik prestasie as in ag geneem word dat sy nog ‘n o.10 atleet is wat in die o.12 ouderdomsgroep moes deelneem.
Die volgende netbal spelers gaan die Oos-Kaap verteenwoordig by die All Ages toernooi in Boksburg. LSAN is trots op julle!
Lenro neem in die o.14 ouderdomsgroep deel en behaal ‘n tweede plek in spiesgooi met ‘n afstand van 36.24 m. Hy wen die gewigstoot met ‘n afstand van 14.1 m. Sy naaste teenstander se afstand was 11.72m. Hy behaal ook ‘n eerste plek in diskusgooi, met ‘n afstand van 44.99 m. Ook hier skop hy stof in sy teenstanders se oë, aangesien sy afstand ‘n hele 8m voor sy naaste teenstander is. Nege van Laerskool Aliwal-Noord se atlete neem deel aan ‘n ASA-byeenkoms in Bloemfontein. The athletes all did their part and achieved great results. Siya Siko achieved two 3rd places in the 150m and 300m sprints for boys u.14. Amy Pretorius, girls u.14, achieved a 2nd place for shot put, with a distance of 7.70m. Mienke du Plessis vaar ook baie goed en behaal twee 1ste plekke in onderskeidelik verspring (afstand 3.79m), en gewigstoot, (7.91m). Chris Weitsz kom 1ste in die 1500m stap vir seuns o.14 met ‘n tyd van 7:56.87, en verdien ‘n hele 931 punte op die APE tabel. Denzil Jacobs behaal ‘n 3de plek in die seuns o.14,80m hekkies. Lenro Kruger neem in die o.16 ouderdomsgroep deel in die spiesgooi en behaal ‘n derde plek, afstand 35.56 meter. In diskusgooi neem hy o.16 deel en behaal ‘n tweede plek. In gewigstoot neem hy weer in sy eie ouderdomsgroep deel, en behaal ‘n 1ste plek met ‘n afstand van 14.8m. Congratulations to all our athletes for achieving these results.
