Singer–songwriter Matthew Mole made chart history as the first South African artist to enter the iTunes SA charts at #1 on the first day of releasing his debut album ‘The Home We Built’. The beautifulseeded apple The protea is our national flower and the pomegranate is the national fruit in Xian in China. I believe that many scholars debate whether the apple in the Garden of Eden was in fact a pomegranate! The pomegranate is native from Iran to the Himalayas in northern India and was cultivated and naturalised over the whole Mediterranean region since ancient times. I love this Biblical fruit; I love every one of the little ruby jewels contained under its skin. These seeds (called arils) are what we eat either raw or processed into pomegranate juice. It is said that pomegranates are among the healthiest fruits on earth. They are said to contain a range of beneficial plant compounds, unrivalled by other foods. Studies have shown that they have incredible benefits for your body, and may lower the risk of all sorts of diseases. An average pomegranate yields 3/4 cup seeds and 1/2 cup of juice. When you go shopping for pomegranates make sure that you choose them with a thin, yet tough skin unbroken skin. They should have a deep red colour and be heavy for their size and a crown that is free of mould. Pomegranates will stay fresh for about two weeks when you store them in a cool, dry place; make sure that this is out of direct sunlight. If you keep them in the refrigerator, they can be stored for up to two months. Although it is recommended that you don’t freeze the fruit whole, the seeds can be frozen. They are in the shops now, so go and get some.

Pomegranate and Pink Grapefruit quencher

Rosemary and Pomegranate cocktail

I like to add lots of fresh pomegranate seeds to the glass. I just love to suck the pips clean – they are so swollen with juice and rich in antioxidants! INGREDIENTS • 1 cup sugar • 2 cups gin • 3 cups fresh grapefruit juice • 3/4 cup fresh lime juice • 3/4 cup Cinzano Bianco • 1 cup pomegranate seeds • Crushed ice • Chilled soda to top up the glasses • Extra fresh pomegranate seeds, to garnish • Fresh mint, to garnish METHOD • In a large jug, stir the sugar with the gin, grapefruit juice, lime juice and Cinzano Bianco, until dissolved. • Stir in the pomegranate seeds. Refrigerate until chilled; about 2 hours. • Fill glasses with crushed ice, top up with grapefruit quencher and garnish the glasses with lots of fresh pomegranate seeds and a sprig of fresh mint.

For the syrup • 2 cups warm water • 1 cup sugar • 4 large sprigs rosemary

Slice of orange 2 cups freshly squeezed orange juice 1 long sprig fresh rosemary 1 cup rosemary syrup 1 cup pomegranate seeds 1 cup of anything white and spirited like vodka, gin, white rum or tequila

METHOD • To make the syrup, place all the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer till reduced by a third; turn off the heat and let the rosemary infuse while the syrup cools. • Add all the cocktail ingredients to a large jug of crushed ice and top up with sparkling mineral water. • To serve, pour into tall glasses filled with crushed ice, and top with a fresh sprig of rosemary

AWSUM Celebrity Interview Q Just about the whole of South Africa heard the iTunes news when ‘The Home We Built’ was released. Did you expect this success? How did it feel to be an overnight sensation? A It was an enormous honour to kick things off with such a buzz. I’m just incredibly grateful that people enjoyed my music enough to get the album to do such a thing! Q The album also achieved Gold status very quickly and the single ‘Take Yours, I’ll Take Mine’ went Platinum. You also received three SAMA nominations for this album: Male Artist of The Year, Best Pop Album and Best Engineer of The Year (Matthew Fink), as well as an MK Awards nomination in the category for Best Newcomer. How has this influenced your career and subsequent work? A It’s been an amazing thing to have my songs exposed to platforms like that. Knowing that more people are going to hear any music you put out puts quite a lot pressure on a person, so I tried not to let the industry dictate how I was going to continue to write music. I try to do things the same way that I used to when I would sit down with a guitar in my bedroom at home as a kid. The music I listen to always changes and with that so does the way I am influenced and so does the way I write. Q What inspires you creatively and personally? Who are ‘your people’? A My family. The people close to me will always inspire me personally. Creatively, anything really, when I see something that intrigues me, I want to know more and more. Q What was your journey to become a professional musician? Have you been a musician since childhood? A I started playing guitar when I was 11. My Dad taught me. I played in a few school concerts growing up, but I just played for fun. After school I would write songs then record them and put them online. Somehow that slowly progressed to the release of my debut album and things because very official from then on. Q Tell us a bit about your family and upbringing. A They have always been the inspiration behind my songwriting. I’ve always been raised with more love and support than I ever could have dreamed of. Q What was the highlight(s) of your career this far? A I’ve had the honour of playing with some of my favourite bands and playing at some of my favourite venues. To this day, I will always remember the first time I played a show and noticed everyone singing along to the lyrics, that was a show back in 2013 in KZN. Q Who are your music icons? A Chris Martin. I have so many, but he always stands out. His authentic song writing is a huge inspiration to me. Q What are your future career dreams? What is the one thing you would really like to achieve? A I want to take it as far as I can, and that being the rest of the world. I would really just love to be able to put on really good shows all over the world, and allow people to feel something different (hope) at these shows.

I’ve recently taken up boxing training and been completely sucked in, I love it. Q What is your favourite food? Movie? Song? A Food: chicken fried rice. Movie: The Lion King. Song: New York, New York by Frank Sinatra. Q What are some of your favorite places to play in South Africa? Over the years, what have been your favorite events to play? A Kirstenbosch Gardens is always an amazing show. I love Durban audiences. Pretoria is literally the place that I have played some of my favourite shows of all time! Q What role does social media play in your career? A It’s huge. The engagement you have with your followers is the most important thing; they are the ones that give you your career. At the same time, being a huge social media icon does not make you a better musician – they are two different parts that can work together if done the right way. Q What is your advice for a first romantic date? Do first impressions count? A They definitely do count. You can always make up for something, but first impressions are important. I like to do something fun and unexpected. When I took Jess on our first date, we flew to Durban for the day and did the bungee jump at Moses Mabhida Stadium then went for a picnic. It was hectic, but luckily Jess loved it. Q What is in the pipeline for 2018? A International touring. I will still be around to play shows and release music in South Africa, but I plan to make some strong, intentional steps overseas. Q What message do you have for our readers (high school kids) about leading a successful life and achieving their dreams? A If you love something, do it and do it well. Work on it hard. Dream big! You will achieve your goals and your dreams if you work on what you are passionate about and try your best to do it well!

Health & Wellbeing Use Rooibos to prevent sunburn Enjoy the sun this summer

From a soothing beverage to beauty elixir, Rooibos tea is one versatile brew. Now researchers have discovered that it can also undo some of the damage caused by the Sun’s harmful rays. For the past 11 years, scientists from the SA Medical Research Council (MRC) and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) have been involved in studying how Rooibos protects against inflammation in skin cells, since chronic inflammation is one of the hallmarks of skin cancer development. Professor Wentzel Gelderblom of CPUT’s Institute of Biomedical and Microbial Biotechnology has been one of the lead researchers involved in the Rooibos study. He says once the skin has been exposed to the Sun’s ultra-violet (UV) rays, Rooibos extracts have the ability to remove precancerous damaged cells and also block the onset of inflammation. “It does so by stopping the multiplication of cancerous cells and removing these cells through programmed cell death – in other words, prompting them to commit suicide,” he explains. It’s the abundance of polyphenols (antioxidants) – natural compounds found in Rooibos – which gives it its restorative power. These compounds are linked with the prevention of various chronic disorders, including skin cancer.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with about 20 000 reported cases every year, which results in more than 700 deaths. People who spend a lot of time in the sun should consider using an after-sun skincare product containing Rooibos extract, as based on the findings of the current studies it could be beneficial. About 80% of sun-induced skin damage occurs before the age of 18, and it is therefore imperative to take special care of children in the sun. Babies younger than one year of age should never be exposed to direct sunlight, as their skin doesn’t produce enough melanin (the skin pigment that helps to protect the skin from the sun). Here’s how you and your family can enjoy the sun this summer without falling into the pitfalls of excessive sun exposure: • Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm, when the sun is at its hottest. • Put on a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 or more, and remember to apply it regularly especially when swimming. • Wear a wide-brimmed hat to cover the face, neck and ears. • Use available shade under trees, umbrellas, tents, and so on. • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. • Equally important during hot summer days is getting enough of the right kinds of liquids, since dehydration can lead to tiredness, headaches and dizziness. Although many people tend to think of Rooibos as only a hot drink, it is an exceptional flavour enhancer and naturally sweet, which makes it a favourite ingredient for iced teas, fruit shakes, smoothies and iced lollies.

Can consumers expect a miracle Rooibos ointment or cream in the near future? Professor Gelderblom says there are still a number of tests that need to be done before an after-sun skincare product is brought to market. “We are currently developing biomarkers, representing critical biological processes of how Rooibos tea protects against skin cancer. These will then be validated in mouse skin before commencing trials in humans. These biomarkers involve sophisticated molecular techniques that will help us to assess Rooibos’ protective effects in very small skin biopsies, which will eventually be utilised to conduct our mouse and clinical trials in humans. Commonly asked questions Many people are hesitant about having to take out a loan, but sometimes even the most successful individuals need to borrow money to take advantage of an opportunity. Just ask Richard Branson! Since it’s not always ideal or possible to borrow money from friends and family, taking a personal loan might be an alternative consideration – and as long as you understand the basics, it’s not necessarily as complicated as you might think. Below are some useful tips on what you need to know when applying for a personal loan, as well as how to protect your personal information and avoid becoming the victim of a scam. Other than being hugely successful, Walt Disney, Mark Zuckerberg, Richard Branson, Sergey Brin and Larry Page all have something else in common – they all borrowed money to take advantage of an opportunity. Not all of us need a loan to launch a global entertainment or social media company or search engine, but occasionally we may need a little help to pay for a qualification or not miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Walt Disney cajoled a friend into lending him a camera, Richard Branson borrowed money from his mother, and Facebook owes at least some of its success to the friends who lent Mark Zuckerberg money. Sergey and Larry asked both their friends and family for the money they needed to rent a garage and buy some servers. Of course it’s not always ideal or possible to borrow from friends and family when opportunity knocks. That’s when taking a personal loan may be a consideration. But how do you go about it? What documentation do you need? How quickly can you get the money? How difficult is it to apply for a personal loan? Applying is usually fairly quick and straightforward and can be done online or through a call centre. You do need to be aware that the credit provider needs to carefully check that you can afford the loan. This process is regulated by the National Credit Act and involves following a series of steps including confirming your credit score, income, existing debts, the ratio of total debt to income, and any other expenses or financial commitments relevant to your application. Credit providers access your credit score from one of the four credit bureaus. You can too and are entitled to one free credit check a year. The basic documents you will need when you apply for a loan are: • Proof of identity in the form of a clear copy of your South African identity document. • Proof of residence such as a recent rates or electricity bill or similar document confirming your residential address. If you are unable to provide this, you will need to submit some other form of confirmation such as an affidavit from your landlord. • Proof of income. This is as simple as providing copies of recent payslips or three months’ worth of bank statements.

Be aware that criminals sometimes pose as legitimate companies to try and get you to provide your details or defraud people. Only provide personal information through recognised channels such as a short code on advertising, the call centre or website or an e-mail from a verified source. While there may be an initiation fee when applying for a loan, you have the option of this being covered in the amount you borrow. Legitimate companies will never ask you for a deposit in order to secure a loan. If you have any doubt whatsoever about a loan offer, always contact the company to check. Once your application has been approved and you’ve submitted all the paperwork you could get the money within 24 hours. Do I pay the same interest on all personal loans? No. Interest rates vary depending on a number of things, including the kind of loan you get, where you get it and your creditworthiness. What is the term of the loan? It depends on the credit provider, the amount you borrow, your financial position and your preference for repayment. Terms can vary and generally providers offer terms of up to six years. The longer the loan term, the lower the monthly repayments will be, but remember you will also be paying interest on the amount you borrowed over a longer period. Can I pay off the loan before the term ends and are there penalties? If you do get a windfall, such as a bonus, it is a good idea to try and settle debt. Paying off your loan earlier will also save you some interest. There are no penalties for settling before the end of the term. Do I have to give a specific reason for getting the loan? No. Although providers can and do ask how you intend spending the money, this is for market research purposes. Once the loan is approved, you can use the money for whatever you want. It is, however, always recommended that you borrow for a specific purpose and use the money for this so you get the optimum benefit from the loan. Is the interest rate fixed for the term of the loan? Interest rates can be fixed or variable. Fixed interest rates stay the same for the entire term of the loan. Even if the Reserve Bank increases the interest rates, you still pay the same. The advantage of fixed rates is you know exactly how much you need to repay each month. As the name suggests, variable rates can vary during the course of the loan, depending on whether the Reserve Bank raises or lowers interest rates. As there is an element of risk to you in taking a variable-rate loan, these rates are generally slightly lower than fixed rates.

The athletics meeting took place at the Westbourne Oval and it was a day for the learners to be proud of. With the sunny weather, abundance of spectators and the cheering houses, the atmosphere was electric! Claire Redman, a Summerwood teacher and a time-keeper at the event, says, “The day ran very smoothly and it was a day enjoyed by all learners and spectators!” The festivities kicked off at 08h00 with the Grade 7 learners of each

house performing a dance. The event consisted of long-distance running, sprints and a fun relay race at the end with parents, teachers and Grade 7 learners. The day came to an end at 13h30 and we take pride in the fact that two records were broken this year: Terryn Delport broke the record for girls u/10 80 metre sprints and Anke Serfontein broke the record for girls u/13 1500 metre. Well done to all of the learners who took part this year. We look forward to seeing all of our athletes excel again next year at our annual Interhouse Athletics Meeting!
