PROFILE
JEAN DE VILLIERS: ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY
With little over eight months left before the start of one of the world’s most anticipated sporting events, the Rugby World Cup, South Africans are waiting with bated breath to see whether national rugby captain Jean de Villiers will be fit enough to play after he sustained a serious knee injury against Wales last year. Two months ago, De Villiers underwent a full reconstruction of the anterior and posterior cruciate knee ligaments with an artificial graft, as well as a repair of the medial collateral knee ligament. In simple terms, he had a full knee reconstruction. According to dr Jacques Snyman, this is fairly serious surgery that could be expected to put the rugby player out of commission for approximately eight months. De Villiers noted that he is very fortunate to have supportive infrastructures at both the Springboks and the Stormers to help him recover from injuries and perform at optimal levels. “In this case, I still needed surgery to repair the damage to my knee, and it really helped knowing I had a supportive and understanding medical scheme in my corner.”
“Recovery after major knee surgery is a slow and careful process requiring input from the orthopaedic surgeon, physical therapist, chiropractor, and trainer who know your abilities and can advise you accordingly,” he explained. Dr Snyman explains the usual stages of recovery one may expect after major knee surgery: Post-surgery After serious knee surgery, your orthopaedic surgeon will usually evaluate any swelling and pain, your muscle activation patterns, and the range of motion of your knee (as well as that of your hip, ankle and lumbar spine). Every joint should function properly so that there is no added stress placed on the knee. The first two weeks Decreasing the swelling and reaching full passive range of motion is very important in the first few weeks after surgery. Treatment options and programmes may include icing the area regularly and working the range of motion between icing sessions. Adhering
to these programmes is crucial to recovery. Start doing weight-bearing exercises Once you have achieved a full range of motion, you can start doing supervised weight-bearing exercises, which may include squats and lunges to strengthen the knee and ligaments. “Having knee surgery is most certainly a humbling experience that teaches you not to take your health for granted,” said De Villiers. “My body is pivotal to my career, but injuries do happen – especially in a sport like rugby. Injuries are part of life; you just have to accept them, listen to your doctor and medical specialists, and work hard to recover. “At this stage, it’s difficult to determine how long I’ll be out of action. In all likelihood, it will be for about eight months, but I am doing everything I can to fast-track my recovery. I am also trying to keep fit by doing some low-intensity cycling and swimming. “The time-out has also given me the perfect opportunity to bond with my baby, Luka, the newest addition to our family.

MAKE A STATEMENT! Easy peasy trend tips
STYLING TIP #1 For a boho chic look, go for different chains and crystals. Necklaces can be small pieces worn together and don’t necessarily have to be big to make a statement.
Statement necklaces are a huge trend now, and they’re an easy way to add some flair to your basic wardrobe. A statement piece is, of course, the best way to take an outfit from boring to bold. Even though most people think that statement necklaces are too fancy, these items can be worn with any outfit if paired properly. When it comes to wearing statement pieces, it’s all about incorporating them into your own style and matching them to your personality and lifestyle.

TECH
Samsung Galaxy S6 Every release in the Samsung S series has been highly anticipated, and it’s been no different in the run-up to the release of the Galaxy S6. In fact, the S6 may be more deserving of attention than any of its predecessors, as the phone is sure to shake up our expectations of the Galaxy S series. From a flexible display and metal casing to an octa-core processor, rumours and speculation have been flying around the internet. Some rumours are, of course, more likely to prove true than others, but everything seems to be pointing to big upgrades and a smartphone deserving of the hype. Here are some things to expect from the Samsung Galaxy S6 in terms of design, features, price, release date and specifications: GET READY FOR AN UPDATED DESIGN. Expect the S6 to have a more durable case, possibly made of aluminium or grapheme. Smartphones – and their screens – have been getting bigger. This is one trend that doesn’t look to be at an end, so expect the S6 to feature a 5.1’’ screen. The biggest upgrades will probably be seen in the processor and camera, and the phone’s display and durability. Expect the S6 to have a 20MP rear camera and 4-7 front camera. Consumers want their phone batteries to last longer, and as Samsung have done well in this regard, it’s not unreasonable to expect them to keep improving.
EXPECTED PRICE Samsung smartphones have always been at the higher end of the pricing spectrum, and we don’t expect this one to be any different. In fact, the S6 is likely to be a little more expensive than previous phones in the S series. You’ll probably be looking at approximately R8 925. EXPECTED RELEASE DATE The S6’s official release date is not expected to be announced until the MWC 2015 at the beginning of March. As the S5’s release date was in April 2014, it seems likely that the next in the series will have a release date in April this year. HERE ARE SOME EXPECTED

WATER POLO GIRLS On Friday 30 January the Pearson 1st water polo girls traveled to Grahamstown to participate in the annual Brian Baker 1st Girls’ Water Polo Tournament hosted by Kingswood College. Pearson came up against Stirling High School (East London) in the final. Discipline, structure, fitness and hard work were the order of the day for both teams were they hoping to win the final. A strong upfront attack saw Pearson slot in 5 goals with Erin Mukheibir and Kelsey Vaughan shining for their team. The defence never let up with captain Mirike du Plessis hardly letting anyone past. The few times that Stirling did however break the defensive line saw them come up against Pearson goalkeeper Kayleigh van Vuuren who was not having any of it and denied the opposition Africa at the CANA IV tournament in Harare, who showed just access to the goals. A superb effort from a team that how far teamwork and a positive attitude can go saw them come was missing 3 players and a coach, representing South out as winners of the tournament with a score of 5 – 2.

A FAIRYTALE EVENING FOR COLLEGIATE MATRICS
If you ask any high school girl what she looks forward to the most during her high school career, the answer almost always will be: “The Matric Dance”. The highlight of the Matric year has now come and gone for the Collegiate Grade Twelves and they are left with wonderful memories of

a magnificent event to sustain them through the year. On Saturday 21 February the Boardwalk Hotel and Convention Centre was abuzz with excitement. As each young lady emerged from the vehicle – some from limousines, some from sports cars, some from vintage cars and some from

retro flower-power era VW Kombies – the cameras would flash and the onlookers would cheer and the Collegiate girl would transform into a princess on the arm of her Prince. This was a historic occasion for Collegiate as it was the first Matric Dance to be held off campus. However, any pangs of nostalgia for doing it the way it has always been done, melted away as
one entered the elegant venue and saw the beauty of the décor and the even more beautiful young ladies. Many danced the night away and when the event drew to a close, it was with regret but also with the knowledge that the memory of this fairytale evening will live with them forever.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROJECTS
Theodor pairs regularly with Walmer High and Primary schools, engaging in various projects from joint debates in the high school to community outreach and similar projects. Theodor recently did a stock take and found a surplus of approximately 35 school desks. It was clear that these would be best used in another school’s classroom where they were really needed! The desks were delivered to Walmer Primary on Monday 17 February by teacher-in-charge of Theodor High’s Interact forum, Miss Nicole Whitehead, Theodor’s Head Prefect Victoria Bolton and Theodor’s Interact head pupil, Christie Vaughan, with the help of our groundsman Mr Sydney Webb. “We went into one of the classrooms to greet some of the Grade 7 learners and saw the state of
their current desks. Some tables had eight learners seated around them while other learners were using small desks that you would find in foundation phase classrooms. It was clear that the desks we brought were going to make a huge difference in their classrooms. We were so pleased to have been able to help and we will continue to share whenever we can,” said Miss Whitehead. Walmer Primary principal Zukiswa Maku said the desks greatly improved learning conditions for her pupils as the school was generally under-resourced and many children had to sit on the floor or on buckets during class.
