Virtual sport series to showcase national school talent “The Showcase is a concept that was born during the Covid-19 pandemic and has grown to the first of its kind talent identification platform in South Africa”, says Gerhardi Odendaal, CEO of Old School Group, the host of The Showcase. “We designed this platform for athletes to improve their own ability at their own pace and to inspire kids that would not normally get the chance to showcase their talents to enter. Bobby Skinstad, Robbie Fleck and VanesMari Proudfoot have put their support behind this initiative and we are proud to combine their skills and knowledge, together with our industry specialists, within the programme”. The Showcase is a platform that gives school kids the opportunity to showcase their talent through sport-specific conditioning drills to determine speed, strength and skill level depending on the sport. Drills include the vertical jump, broad jump, sprinting, etc. and leaners submit the results of each test/showcase on the Showcase website and follow their results on a weekly leader board.
“So many times, we see talent that gets lost in the crowds at schools. Now kids can enter and compete individually, and we present the best performers for contracting by talent seekers”.
The Showcase is a platform that gives school kids the opportunity to showcase their talent through sport-specific conditioning drills to determine speed, strength and skill level depending on the sport.
“Children between the ages of 12 and 18 can showcase their athleticism and fitness as part of this unique programme and make their talents visible to top recruiters. This also builds self-confidence and enables youngsters to perform on a broader platform to measure their performance against other learners across the country”, van Zyl concluded. Hoërskool Montana leerder, Duan Strydom in graad 9C, het Saterdag 27 Maart 2021 deelgeneem aan Ekurhuleni Ope Stoeikompetisie in Benoni. Hy was een van 17 stoeiers in die gewigsgroep 53-58kg en het ‘n pragtige tweedeplek behaal. Baie geluk met die mooi prestasie, Duan!

Curro celebrates Class of 2020’s top achievers with esteemed online awards Traditionally, Curro’s top achievers were celebrated at a prestigious gala event in January each year. While this year’s event required a format change, there was certainly no less reason to celebrate virtually. The Matric Awards honoured learners from Curro schools who have completed the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) and National Senior Certificate (NSC). Writing the IEB exams, learners from Curro Schools and Curro Select Schools achieved an exceptional 99.5% pass rate. A total of 85.6% of these learners qualified for university studies (Bachelor’s Degree Pass). • Top IEB academic achiever: Rachel Neleah van Zyl, from Woodhill College in Tshwane. • 2nd place: Cathrine de Klerk, also of Woodhill College, attained an overall average of 94.57%. • 3rd place: Securing third place with an was Curro Aurora’s Nicole Elizabeth Krause with an overall average of 94.29%.
Laerskool Boerefort daag skole uit om deel te neem aan die gemeenskapsprojek Laerskool Boerefort het onlangs met die gemeenskap hande gevat om sodoende die KOESTER ‘n VERPLEEGSTER projek te loods, waartydens bederfpakkies ingesamel en versprei was onder die gesondheidswerkers van Life Eugene Marais Hospitaal. Die gemeenskap was op 10 Maart 2021 genooi om saam met die leiers en personeel van Laerskool Boerefort die gesondheidswerkers te gaan bedien met gebed en lofprysing, onder leiding van Christ Kingdom Family Church, Dare to Love en Bergsig Gemeenskapskerk. Die omgeepakkies was tydens hierdie uitreik uitgedeel ter waardering van die hospitaalwerkers se onbaatsigtige toewyding tydens die COVID-19 pandemie. Die rooi hartjies op die leerders se hande simboliseer die oophartige wyse waarop ons leerders gee en dien. Laerskool Boerefort daag alle skole uit tot ‘n soortgelyke inisiatief onder hospitale in hulle area, om sodoende ons gesondheidswerkers te bemoedig.

‘n SA-rekord vir Zwarrie-spiesgooier Mickyla van der Westhuizen, ’n graad 12 leerder van Hoërskool Zwartkop is die nuwe SuidAfrikaanse o.18 dogters spiesgooirekordhouer. Sy het die vorige rekord verpletter deur ‘n afstand van 57,57m te gooi. Nog ‘n spogprestasie is die van Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool se Johandre Pienaar tydens die seuns o.18 spiesgooikompetisie. Johandre is slegs 15 jaar oud en begin vanjaar se seisoen met ‘n persoonlike beste afstand van 64,98m met die 700g spies.
Sutherland High School cyclist star shines at championship in Cairo Aimee Armstrong and her teammate placed 3rd at the African Road and Track Championships that took place in Cairo from 10 to 13 March 2021. Aimee is a grade 11 pupil at Sutherland High School and represented South Africa at this event. We are incredibly proud of Aimee for doing so exceptionally well and we look forward to following her progress as she continues to excel at future events.

Midmar Virtual Swim Congratulations to Caitlyn Martin and Christien Steenekamp for completing the Midmar Virtual Swim. Due to the fact that the Midmar Mile was cancelled this year, participants were able to complete their 1.6km / mile in any water body that they felt safe swimming in. They were able to track their swim via an app or smartwatch and submitted a screenshot of their activity along with their home.

Acrobatic Dancing Congratulations to Megan Roux, who had a busy end to 2020! Megan qualified for the SA Acrobatic Dance Championships after competing in the Gauteng North Acrobatic Dancing Competition in November 2020, where she placed first in her section. She earned her SA Colours in Acrobatic Dancing. Megan also participated in Stage Quest Dance Competition in November 2020, where she and her dance group won 3 gold medals and one silver medal. VAN DIE HOËRSKOOL MEN Hoe vorder hierdie jaar se voorbereiding in ag genome die beperkinge van die Covid-regulasies? Ons was nog nooit so goed voorbereid gewees soos nou nie. Hou in gedagte dat ons reeds verlede jaar September begin oefen het. Ons het baie tyd spandeer aan afronding met die hoop ons dat die seisoen eersdaags tussen skole weer kan afskop. Dit beteken dat ons al 6 maande baie hardewerk met al ons spelers gedoen het.
Hoe lyk julle span vir 2021? Ek is baie opgewonde oor ons groep seuns. Daar is werklik iets van alles as dit kom by talent en vul die manne mekaar mooi aan. Ons glo nog altyd in ‘n baie gesonde balaans as ons kyk na die samestelling van spanne. Soos genoem het elkeen baie hard gewerk en is dissipline ons fondasie. Ek weet dat die span goed sal vaar.

VAN DIE HOËRSKOOL MEN Wat is jou beste herinnering tydens jou krieketloopbaan? Die krieket-belewenis wat vir my altyd sal by bly is Menlo se oorwinning teen Rondebosch in die Noord Suid semifinaal.
Waaraan dink jy terwyl jy op die krieketveld is? Gewoonlik is my kop vol planne en veldplasings en boulveranderings. Soos ek sê ek hou daarvan om betrokke te wees by alles wat op die veld aangaan.
Hoe voel dit om uiteindelik teen ander skole, na die 2020 - Covid – regulasies te speel? Dit voel so bietjie soos ‘n verligting om uiteindelik weer ordentelik te kan kompeteer. Ek het nooit gedink ek sal so baie uitsien om weer te speel nie.
Wie is elke jaar julle moeilikste opponent? Waterkloof of Affies.
Hoe gaan dit met julle seisoen sover? Baie goed in my opinie. Ons het baie "intersquads" onder die belt wat ons goed voorberei het. Daarna het ons elke wedstryd sover gewen wat ons teen n ander skool gespeel het. Is jy `n natuurlike leier? Bv: `n goeie oog vir veldwerk plasings, die rotering van boulers en om situasies tydens die wedstryd te identifiseer en te analiseer? Ja, dit kom nog altyd vir my redelik natuurlik, dalk omdat ek saam met my ouer broer tot ‘n groot mate langs die krieketveld groot geword het. Ek hou daarvan om die spel so slim as moontlik te speel en om betrokke te wees by al die verskillende fases en al die fasette. Wie is jou krieket held? Kane Williamson.
Wat maak jou span en skool spesiaal? Vir my wat Menlo nog altyd spesiaal maak, is dat elke liewe krieketspeler deel is van die krieket-familie en elkeen gee om vir mekaar. Rakende die span is ons `n jong span maar almal is lus om te presteer en te kompeteer. Hulle staan terug vir niks nie. Buiten krieket, wat is jou ander belangstellings? Grade 9 subject choices: why you should start considering them now In a few months’ time, Grade Nine learners will be required to make important decisions about which combination of subjects they will be pursuing through to their final Matric exams. This is an important first milestone on the road to building a career, an education expert says, adding that while the decision would normally be left until later in the year, the world has changed so dramatically that Grade Nines should start thinking about this significant decision sooner rather than later. “The world changed last year – not just because schooling and work were disrupted and not just because both had to happen from home in ways never imagined before. The world changed because we are unlikely to go back to what we experienced in 2019,” says Natasha Madhav, Senior Head of Programme: Faculty of ICT at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest private higher education provider. “It has long been said that one needs to prepare young people for jobs that do not exist, but this has never been a concept that has been crystallised in a way that really helped one make decisions. Perhaps it is clearer now to focus on preparing for a world of work that is changed and focusing on industries and skill sets that are and will be in demand, rather than on jobs with names that are familiar to us. “So, for instance, law has not vanished as a field, but most lawyers now need to consult online as easily as they do in person and they can collaborate in real time with colleagues all over the place. They also need to be advising people on both physical and digital implications of what they do.”
“The basic instruction is the same – develop an understanding of fields you are interested in and the things you are good at. Then look for jobs and careers that seem future-focused. Then, look for institutions that not only offer future-oriented curricula, but whose teaching and learning and assessment are explicitly directed at a changing world”. This then links to smart subject choices, Madhav says. “If your field is likely to be scientific and technical and analytical, you are still well served to include maths and science and perhaps a technology subject. If your field is problem-solving and solution-oriented, then subjects like history and design or visual arts will provide that skill set. If you are looking for both, you will need both. Higher education institutions are not going to move away from some of the standard demands for particular high-demand disciplines or fields, so be sure that you understand what you need for admission and include these in your choices. One of the key issues to consider is the fact that automation is on the rise, and that technological adoption by companies will transform jobs and indemand skills in future. And, as noted by the WEF in their most recent Future of Jobs report, skills gaps will continue to be high as in-demand skills across jobs change in the next five years. As noted in the report: “The top skills and skill groups which employers see as rising in prominence in the lead up to 2025 include groups such as critical thinking and analysis as well as problem-solving, and skills in self-management such as active learning,

Die kans om die nuwe graad 8's by ons skool te verwelkom en om ’n groot deel van hulle hoërskool lewe te wees Wat sou jysê is jou sterk- en swak punte? Sterk: Ek het baie dryfkrag om die goed te doen wat ek passievol oor is of nie. Ek het ook 'n begeerte om seker te maak almal word regverdig behandel Swak: As my span nie deel in die dryfkrag nie kan my passie vurig word. Ek sukkel om te 'multi task'. Is daar enige iets wat jy graag sou verander by jou skool? Ek sou graag wil hê dat ons meer vir liefdadigheid moet doen en herwinning bevorder. Wat geniet jy die meeste van jou skool? Die klein groep leerders in die skool. Dit laat die hele skool soos 'n familie voel. As jy matiglik sosiaal is, weet min mense nie wie jy is nie.
Matriek is jou laaste jaar- van ‘n akademie se oogpunt, wat sou jy graag wil bereik. Dux-leerling en 9 onderskeidings. Enige boodskap van aanmoediging vir jou mede-leiers? Onthou dat alleen gaan jy vinnig, maar saam... gaan jy ver. Ons is deur rowwe tye, maar in mekaar kan ons, ons rotse vind. Wie is jou rolmodel? Youtuber: Markiplier. Hy doen wat hy lief het en gebruik amper elke geleentheid wat hy het om geld vir liefdadigheid in te samel. Wat is jou planne vir na skool? Ek sal graag Wiskunde, Fisika en Chemie wil gaan swot en in ‘n navorsingsrigting gaan. As jy ‘n super-hero kon wees, wie sou dit wees en waarom? Batman. Hy is net ‘n normale persoon wat besluit het om sy deel te doen vir sy gemeenskap. Hy inspireer ander om ook weerstand te bied teen wetteloosheid, moord ens.

Wat sou jy sê is jou sterk- en swak punte? Sterkpunte: Positiwiteit en vriendelikheid. Swakpunte: Ek raak soms ongeduldig. Is daar enige iets wat jy graag sou verander by jou skool? Ek sal meer sosiale geleenthede wil reël. Wat geniet jy die meeste van jou skool? Die gees en die samesyn van ons skool. Ek hou ook daarvan dat ons skool nie te groot is nie. Dit voel soos my tweede familie. Matriek is jou laastejaar- van ‘n akademiese oogpunt, wat sou jy graag wil bereik. Ek sal graag my punte op so vlak wil hê dat ek universiteitstoelating kan kry vir die rigting waarin ek wil gaan studeer (op die oomblik is dit fisioterapie).

Werk hard as jy moet en kom ons geniet dit saam, want die tyd vlieg so ongelooflik vinnig verby. Wie is jou rolmodel? My ouers. Ek kyk op na hulle en ek streef daarna om soos hulle te wees. Wat is jou planne vir na skool? Ek wil graag eers ‘n “gap” jaar vat en oorsee gaan au pair. Ek is absoluut mal oor kinders en ek wil graag so bietjie meer van die wêreld sien. Daarna wil ek swot om ‘n fisioterapeut of ‘n Biokinetikus te word. As jy ‘n super-hero kon wees, wie sou dit wees en waarom? Superman, hy kan alles wat ek nie kan doen nie. DIE HOËRSKOOL WONDERBOOM Wonnie-Trots Die Hoërskool Wonderboom se personeel reik na uitnemendheid en skep ‘n goeie voorbeeld vir die Wonnies. Ons is bevoorreg om ons eie Tukkie – Varsity Cup-speler in ons midde te hê. Wian van Niekerk, senter vir Tuks se Vasity Cup, het in Januarie 2021 deel van Wonnieland geword. Hy speel reeds vanaf 2017 vir Tuks rugby en is alreeds in 2019 gekies om Varsity Cup te speel. Hy is vir die Wonnies ‘n voorbeeld van iemand wie sy drome najaag en alles in sy vermoë doen, om sy drome te laat realiseer. Hy gee tans Sosioale Wetenskap, Ekonomiese Bestuurswetenskap en Besigheidsstudies. Hy is betrokke by die skool se o/14-rugbyspan en ons weet hy gaan ons leerders ondersteun en lei om hoër hoogtes te bereik.

Waarna sien jy die meeste uit tydens jou tydperk as leier by jou skool? Ek sien die meeste daarna uit om te groei saam met die skool en as mens. Wat sou jy sê is jou sterk- en swakpunte? My sterkpunt is beslis my strewe na meelewendheid – ek probeer om mense raak te sien vir wie hulle is, en vir wat hulle kan wees. My swakpunt is dat ek konflik vermy – ek sal eerder die “punch” vat as om iemand aan te vat.
As jy ‘n super-hero kon wees, wie sou dit wees en waarom? Wonder Woman – sy kies om die goed in mense raak te sien, selfs al lyk die omstandighede soms baie somber. Op ‘n normale Saterdag, sal ons jou kry by… saam met … ‘n Braai saam met my vriende. Wie is jou Hollywood ‘celeb crush’? Scott Eastwood wat Luke Collins in “The Longest Ride” vertolk.
Is daar enige iets wat jy graag sou verander by jou skool? Nou moet ek versigtig dink. Ek sal baie graag ‘n akademiese periode daar wil stel waartydens die kinders hulle huiswerk kan doen (huiswerkperiode). Wat geniet jy die meeste van jou skool? Beslis die samesyn! Matriek is jou laaste jaar- van ‘n akademiese oogpunt, wat Sal jy graag wil bereik? Ek wil my akademiese uitkomste tot so ‘n mate bereik dat ek my lewensdrome ten volle kan navolg. Wat is jou planne vir na skool? Ek wil baie graag medies gaan studeer en ‘n pediatriese sentrum oopmaak.

VAN HOËRSKOOL WATERKL Waarna sien jy die meeste uit tydens jou tydperk as leier by jou skool? Ons breek in 2021 die rekord vir die grootste getal graad 8-leerders wat nog ooit by ‘n Afrikaanse skool ingeskryf het en elkeen van daardie nuwe Druppels maak my opgewonde. Daar is ook ‘n besonderse bewustheid onder ons groep oor hoe onvervangbaar matriekjaar herinneringe is en ek sien uit na ‘n ongelooflike jaar saam met die graad. Dit is ook ‘n voorreg om op ‘n ander manier met van die personeel te skakel. Is daar enige iets wat jy graag sou verander by die skool? Ek sou niks verander nie. Ek sal wel op ons huidige gees en tradisies wil bou. 'n Mens moet aanhou groei, want as jy nie besig is om te groei nie is jy besig om te ver gaan. Daar is altyd spasie vir verbetering en ek sal graag Waterkloof as 'n beter skool wil verlaat, as toe ek vir die eerste keer daar ingestap het. Wat geniet jy die meeste van jou skool? Waterkloof dink in alle aspekte vernuwend en uit die boks wat beteken dat ons as leiers met enige voorstelle kan kom en dat daarna alles geluister word. Ons kan kreatiewe planne en idees uitdink. Ons word nie beperk deur die verlede nie, enige iets is moontlik. Kan jy dink hoe opbouend en inspirerend dit is om in so ‘n atmosfeer skool te gaan? Die ongekende kameraderie en gees wat daar tans heers is die produk hiervan.
Enige boodskap van aanmoediging vir mede-leiers? Wanneer iemand met ‘n pragtige stem weier om te sing of ‘n top atleet nooit uit sy kamer kom nie, sal ons dit as ‘n groot tragedie beskryf, nie nét vir die persoon self nie maar ook vir die gene om hom. As jy leierseienskappe van die Here ontvang het, maar dit nie ontwikkel en benut nie, is dit ook ‘n tragedie. Ons is jonk en dit verskaf ons met absolute vryheid om te groei en ervaring op te doen wat van werklike langtermyn waarde is. Neem groot skaalse aksie om jou leierskap te bevorder. Wie is jou rolmodel? Tony Robbins is een van my rolmodelle. Hy is vir my 'n ware voorbeeld van iemand wat sysukses van die grond af opgebou het. Ek bewonder sy vermoë om met mense te werk, en die gebalanseerde lewe wat hy volhou. Van my ander rolmodelle is TD Jakes, Eric Thomas en Jordan Peterson. As jy ‘n super-hero kon wees, wie sou dit wees en waarom? Ek kies Gandalf the Grey, want ek sou graag bekend wou staan vir daardie epiese aanhaling: “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”
