Sizzling soups Brrr. The cold is finally really here to stay! Temperatures are dropping, socks are getting thicker and you’re suddenly finding you need an extra blanket on your bed at night. Winter is here, and it brings with it more time snuggled up indoors, endless cups of tea and, of course, bowls of steaming soup. There’s no better side for soup than fresh bread, so here’s a round-up of six super soups and the perfect bread sides to accompany them. Cheeky broccoli and cheese
Soup: Broccoli and cheese are a heavenly match, and this is a good way to disguise healthy green vegetables if your family aren’t mad about them. Fry half an onion in a little oil until soft. Add two cups of broccoli, a litre of chicken or vegetable stock and a tin of evaporated milk. Boil until the broccoli is soft, then add a cup of grated cheddar cheese. Blend until smooth. Side: Mix softened butter with grated lemon zest, then spread onto toasted low GI brown bread. Serve with the broccoli soup and enjoy.
Smoky bacon and bean
Soup: The best thing about this soup is that you can make it with items from your kitchen cupboard or freezer. Simply fry a few rashers of chopped bacon until crispy. Add a tin of Italian tomato and onion mix and a tin of butter beans. Side: Make herbed garlic butter by mixing together soft butter, one chopped garlic clove and some dried herbs. Spread this mixture onto slices of low GI white bread and then grill until crispy and golden. Dunk the garlic bread into the soup for a hearty meal that’ll warm anyone up from the inside.
Tummy-filling sweetcorn Soup: This soup is a great way to use up leftover roast chicken pieces. Fry two chopped potatoes and one onion in a little butter, then add a tin each of creamed sweetcorn and whole kernel corn (drained). Add a can of cream of chicken soup, a dash of milk and any leftover chicken, chopped into small pieces. Side: While the soup bubbles away, toast a few slices of low GI crushed wheat brown bread, top with grated parmesan and grill until the cheese has melted into the bread. Serve the soup when the potatoes are completely soft, with a healthy portion of parmesan toasts.
Hearty veggie noodle Soup: If you have odds and ends of vegetables in your fridge, you can whip up this soup for almost nothing. Fry one onion a little oil, then add chopped carrots, celery and courgettes. Add two tablespoons of tomato paste and two cups of vegetable stock to the mixture. Bring to the boil, then add two cups of short pasta (macaroni, penne, fusilli or shells) and cook until the pasta is al dente. Side: To serve with the soup, cut slices of toaster white bread into cubes, sprinkle with olive oil and salt, then roast in the oven until crispy. Sprinkle the homemade croutons into noodle soup just before serving – scrumptious!
Creamy mushroom Soup: This soup couldn’t be simpler and it works for a laid-back dinner party starter. Fry two punnets of sliced mushrooms, one chopped onion and three cloves of chopped garlic in melted butter until all the mushrooms are brown and tender. Add two cups of fresh cream and a cup of vegetable or chicken stock, simmer for five minutes, then turn off the heat. Side: Cut slices of toaster brown bread into ‘soldiers’, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with brown onion soup powder, and bake until completely crispy. The brown onion soup gives them a salty, savoury flavour. Serve with the hot mushroom soup and top with a dollop of sour cream, if you have some.
Meaty lasagne soup Soup: If your family loves lasagne, they’ll adore this twist on the classic pasta dish. Fry mince with one onion and a chopped carrot until golden brown, then add two tins of chopped tomatoes and simmer. Add two cups of beef stock and a cup of elbow macaroni. Cook until the pasta is soft. Side: Toast three pieces of sliced white bread, then whizz in a blender until a chunky crumb is formed. Fry the crumbs in a little olive oil with some dried herbs, until crispy. Use these crunchy breadcrumbs to top the lasagne soup.

Fortyfour learners from Curro Hazeldean managed to qualify for round two of the competition, which was held at Star College on Saterday, 14 May. The learners who finished in the top 100 were invited to attend the Awards Ceremony,
which was held at Star College on Thursday, 2 June. Nineteen Learners from Curro Hazeldean attended the Awards Ceremony. Curro Hazeldean won the award for the school with the most learners in the Top 100. Pieter Beyers received the award for the top Grade 6 learner in the competion and was ranked 9th overall.

Miranda and the Magic Sponge Act Studios Drama is delighted to announce our first professional production at the Atterbury Theatre. The production, Miranda and the Magic Sponge, is an underwater play, by Peter Scholtz. This production is unusual, because the entire cast is made up of children ranging between 9 and 13 years old. Children from our drama studios at various schools were invited to audition, and we are delighted to announce that the following children from Glenstantia were awarded roles in the production: Jordan Rajah, Vaylin Du Toit, Lethabo Manasoe, Keira Blake, Anjola Tukuru, Abbey Pienaar and Nicky van der Merwe.

This league consists of four league races that take place in Johannesburg and Pretoria. Megan Gerber has had an amazing season and has succeeded in winning every Senior Girls race this term. The last league race is a qualifier for the Inter-District and Inter-League races.
Both the Senior and Junior Teams from PHSG qualified for the Inter-League race. These teams competed against the top three teams from each district. In addition, two senior girls, Megan Gerber and Lebo Maboa, qualified for the Inter-District race, as well as two juniors, Erin Weintraud and Bonolo Moabi. These girls then represented the Central District Team

New library and music centre On Tuesday, 31 May, Pretoria Boys High School held the official opening of their new library and music centre, the Bill Schroder Centre. The centre was named after Mr Bill Schroder, previous headmaster of Pretoria Boys High School. The event was opened by the current headmaster, Mr Tony Reeler, and included a message from the project manager, Mr John Illsley. After Mr Schroder officially opened the building, special guests, staff, parents and Old Boys were invited to view the facility. This Bill Schroder Centre is central to the academic programme of the school. The library offers a variety of facilities, from research
to working on assignments, from studying to relaxed reading. It is a wireless hotspot with digital resources that pupils can use to explore and work on projects. The specialised facilities within the new music centre include a rehearsal room, a music teaching room and 13 instrument teaching rooms. All of these are soundproof by having triple-rebate doors, carpeting and acoustic ceiling panels. The centre also features a music library in the entrance hall, and several storerooms. This modern facility offers the latest technology to the pupils of Pretoria Boys High School and is an asset for future generations.

REDDFORD HOUSE Reddford arrows fly true! Reddford House had three archers competing against 27 other schools at SANIAC 2016 (South African National Indoor Archery Championship). Thomas Kerslake, Shaun Kerslake and Juandre van der Walt made Reddford House history by becoming the first three archers in the Reddford group to obtain their National Colours.

Handing Out Shoes and Smiles A group of Grade 9 and 10 Reddford House students and staff members joined the staff of Abba’s Pride to distribute shoes that our school had collected on Barefoot Day to those in need. We travelled to the rural area of Wollmannsthal where we lay out the shoes in a clearing under a tree. Soon the groups of children came down the dusty road from the local church, where they had received a meal of porridge. We measured the children’s feet and selected shoes for them to try on. Each child who arrived left with a ‘new’ pair of shoes and we left humbled by the experience.

Community Saturday As part of the Reggio Emilia approach adopted by Reddford House Early Learning School, we regularly hold Community Saturday mornings where parents, children and teachers come together to work on projects in the school. This term, we built a car track, two ‘real worlds’ farm models, and did maintenance on our previous projects.
