AWSUMCelebrity Interview

KAHN & The Parlotones The Parlotones is one of South Africa’s most loved and successful bands, with multi-platinum album status and major international acclaim and fans. Lead singer and songwriter Kahn Morbee’s lyrics focus on personal themes of love and everyday life, paired with catchy melodies that engage their audience. Formed in 1998, the group consists of Kahn (vocals and rhythm guitar), Paul Hodgson (lead guitar), Glenn Hodgson (bass guitar, keyboards and backing vocals) and Neil Pauw (drums and percussion). AWSUM News caught up with Kahn and the band whilst on their countrywide tour ‘The Stories Behind the Songs’.

Paul, Kahn, Glenn and Neil

Q: Many of your lyrics have multiple layers of meaning. Tell us about the new show, the title of which is very intriguing and seems to talk to your lyrics. A: ‘The Stories Behind the Songs’ tour is part of a book that we are working on, in which each band member shares a memory of every single album we have done from the start. The book will be in coffee table format, with loads of photos and wonderful stories.

Q What was your earliest success, when you considered yourself to be ‘on the map’? A Our first album launch. It was very exciting and we felt a sense of accomplishment for something we’d dreamt of. Our first award was also a proud moment, because it meant approval and kind of eradicated a lot of doubt and gave us a belief and confidence in ourselves.

Q: What was the inspiration for the concept of the book and the show? A: Creating music that resonates with our fans is something that we are very proud of and we are looking forward to sharing the method behind our madness when it comes to the processes and ideas behind constructing each and every song, be it the different paths in life we have travelled, to the experiences and adventures. We are enjoying sharing these stories with our fans across the country.

Q Tell us a bit about your international footprint. A We have toured internationally since 2007, spending months on the road in the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and North America. We have also toured in South America, Canada, Australia, Japan and Russia, and have shared the stage with Coldplay, Starsailor, Snow Patrol, Live, Ash, Razorlight, Blue October, Violent Femmes, Imagine Dragons, and many more.

Q: Kahn, how did your iconic show make-up happen? A: A couple of years ago we did a show at a cosmopolitan party and we played with eight other bands. We wanted to stand out and be remembered, so I applied the make-up and it has been a hit ever since. Q: How did The Parlotones happen? A: We started jamming as a garage band in 1998. We can’t believe that we have been jamming together for 16 years already! We feel like family members. Q: Kahn, you have embarked on a solo career as well. How did that come about? A: I thought it was time to start working on my own unique sound, but I’m still involved with The Parlotones (before people start worrying!). I am known only as Kahn for my solo performances and am pursuing a more introspective, personal approach to my craft. Q: What were some highlights of the journey as The Parlotones? A: One of our favourite memories of the early years was when the band performed at the Coca-Cola Dome in 2009. We became the first South African band to sell out at the Dome, with about 13 000 fans attending that show. Another proud moment was when we performed at the opening concert of the 2010 FIFA World Cup with famous artists like The Black Eyed Peas and Shakira.

Q What are your aspirations as a band? A We have always aspired not only to have fun making music, but also to give back to our community. Over the years, we have raised funds and awareness for a variety of social and environmental organisations, such as Earth Hour amd Nelson Mandela’s 46664. We are also ambassadors for the anti-poaching organisation Rhino Force and several other nonprofits that combat problems that acutely affect South Africa. Q Kahn, your songwriting prowess and stage presence has garnered you a huge fan base. How do you keep inspired? A On stage, I remind myself that I’ve been blessed to be able to do what I love and I need to show the audience that. Wether it’s 40 or 40 000 people. I think that I kind of take on an alter ego when I perform because I want people to feel, experience a certain exhibition that a performer displays. It’s like a quick fix of freedom before the trappings of real life re-emerge. It’s a fix for me and hopefully the audience as well. I may not take everyone on that journey, but I hope to take some. I love biographies because real-life stories of people help me relate that to my life and inspire me. I love books on science, arts, philosophy, religion, belief systems, economics and politics, because they all try to explain our existence from a different perspective and I find it fascinating. I believe the arts – whether it be literature, art, music, film or poetry – try to do the same as the above, but in a condensed form. It suggests a line of thought but allows its audience to subscribe to its own interpretation.

Just Cause 3 is an open world action-adventure video game developed by Avalanche Studios and published by Square Enix. Set six years after its predecessor, Just Cause 3 follows series protagonist Rico Rodriguez as he returns to his birthplace of Medici, a fictional Mediterranean republic under the brutal control of dictator General Sebastiano Di Ravello. The game is played from a third-person view and allows players to explore the island of Medici in an open-ended environment. Just Cause 3 received generally positive reviews; critics praised the open-ended gameplay, the game’s destruction mechanics and promotion of player agency, while criticism was directed at the game’s narrative, which was considered clichéd and uninspired, and many noted the performance issues, particularly on the console versions of the game.

Nuts about Butternut!!!

by Jenny Morris @jennymorrischef

The one vegetable I love eating all year round is butternut, but I especially love it in winter. It says comfort to me. You can use it in so many ways: roasted with rosemary, a touch of salt and sugar and extra virgin olive oil; in soups, mashed with lashings of butter; it is great as a stuffing for cannelloni; great in risotto, fritters, or raw in salads – you can have your way in so many ways with butternut! The way to choose the perfect butternut is to look for one with a nice long neck and small bottom. Butternut squash seeds are tasty and are eaten as nutritious snack food since they contain 35–40% oil and 30% protein, so don’t throw them away – roast them and eat them. The butternut itself I’m told is low in calories, with 100g providing just 45 calories – that makes me happy, as it means I can eat lots of it. (My problem is I lash it with butter, so there goes the low calorie count ...). It is also a wonderful vegetable for your skin because it of its extremely high vitamin A content, and great for your hair too. There are also significant amounts of vitamin C, E, K, B6, folate and thiamine found in butternut. So let’s eat it – come and cook with me.

Let’s Cook!!

Roasted butternut cheesecake with burnt sage butter Serves 6 – 8 When cooking with sage be sure to choose nice fleshy leaves, firm green stalks and definitely not a sign of wilting or blemishes. It will be even more delicious if you pick it just before you need to use it. The base • 150 g savoury biscuit crumbs • 100 g melted butter • 1 teaspoon chopped rosemary needles The filling • 500 g peeled butternut cubes

• 2 teaspoons olive oil • 2 teaspoons rosemary needles • salt • pepper • 1 teaspoon brown sugar • 2 eggs, beaten • 1 cup cream • 300 g ricotta cheese • 1 cup grated mature cheddar cheese • ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg • 2 cloves crushed garlic Burnt sage butter sauce • 100 g butter • 15 fresh fleshy sage leaves

• To prepare the base, mix the crumbs, butter and rosemary together. Press the mixture into a 20 cm spring-form baking tin, and set till firm in the fridge. • Make the filling next. Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Toss the butternut with the olive oil, rosemary, salt, pepper and sugar, and roast till tender – about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside. • Blend together the eggs, cream, ricotta, cheddar, nutmeg and garlic, and spoon over the biscuit base. Bake at 180 °C until set – approximately 35 to 40 minutes. • Just before the cheesecake is ready to come out of the oven, prepare the sage butter sauce. Heat the butter in a pan until it begins to foam. Add the sage and cook until the butter starts to go nutty and brown, and the leaves are crisp. • Serve the cheesecake warm with some burnt sage butter, or cold with a large green salad.

Good lighting is everything

OMGi Selfie Stick

The right lighting is essential for taking a great selfie. Natural light makes your hair look shinier and your skin luminous, so take advantage of outdoor spots or areas near windows.

Capture images from a distance. No battery or app required – simply connect your device with an audio jack.

Choose your background wisely

The camera may be focusing on you, but those dirty dishes on the table behind you are sure to catch everyone’s eye if caught in your selfie. Always check your surroundings before taking a selfie to ensure nothing unwanted creeps into the picture.

OMGi LED Illuminating Selfie Case

Play around to find the perfect angle You may have heard people talking about their “good” side – well everyone has one! Try taking selfies from different angles (from your left, your right, from above, from below) and look through the pics to decide which one is most flattering. The best angle should become your signature.

Make use of apps and filters

While it’s possible to over-use filters, they’re a lifesaver when you just can’t find the perfect light, or when you want to add a bit of mystery or playfulness to a pic. Try a few different effects before settling for one.

Don’t be afraid to be a bit silly

Some of the best selfies come from moments of letting your hair down and acting a bit silly. Don’t be afraid to use a prop, pull a face or let out a laugh – especially when taking a pic with some friends.

Smile!

In doubt as to which is your best facial expression? Stick to a smile – it’s warm and inviting and shows you don’t take yourself too seriously.

Use a selfie stick

Easier than having to stretch your arm out and offering a better angle and wider cover, a selfie stick really ups your game!

Health & Wellbeing Know your plastics You’re feeling rather smug as you chug another gulp of water from your trusty old plastic water bottle, which is still in service months since you bought it. Helping your body and the planet, right? Wrong! Many consumers are unaware that there are toxins within many plastics, including Bisphenol A (BPA), which could negatively affect your health and the planet. But equally alarmingly is the amount of non-biodegradable waste we are creating in the name of convenience, causing havoc with our natural environments and threatening our wildlife. Before you buy products, check under plastic containers for their plastic grade markers to identify and to assist with recycling. Here’s an easy guide to the seven plastic grades.

1 (PET) – Polyethylene Terephthalate Typical applications include cooldrink, juice and water bottles, jars (e.g. peanut butter, salad dressings, oil, cosmetics and some household cleaners) and food trays. There is much debate about the number of times these containers can safely be used. According to PET Plastic Recycling SA (PETCO) the presence of antimony oxide, used as a catalyst, is well within the safe limits for food and water as per World Health Organisation standards. This grade largely comprises food and drink packaging and is recyclable. Be sure to drop off at your nearest recycling facility. 02 (PE-HD) – Polyethylene (high density) Polyethylene is the most commonly produced plastic in the world due to its versatility of being either soft and flexible or hard and durable. Common uses include milk and detergent bottles, bottle caps, food storage containers, plastic bags and it is even used in plastic surgery. Its ability to be repurposed multiple times into many goods makes this a highly desirable recycling product. 03 (PVC) – Polyvinylchloride The most toxic plastic, as it leaches phthalates (dioxins created from the manufacture and incineration), which is known as one of the deadliest of manmade poisons. It is linked to a wide range of negative health effects, including reproductive problems, organ toxicity and even cancers. Uses include water pipes, sidings, signs, insulation, clothing, furniture, pleather, shower curtains and toys. Always look at the list of materials when buying toys, and keep a watchful eye on what youngsters put in their mouths. A toy may not look harmful but the effects of the toxin could be. Due to PVC’s durability, it’s not biodegradable or degradable, taking decades to break down into granules often ingested by animals, including marine life. 04 (PE-LD) – Polyethylene (low density) Relatively chemically non-reactive, these plastics degrade very slowly and present a burden to the environment for centuries. Uses include disk drives, snap-on lids, six-pack rings, playground slides, plastic wraps, building film, cosmetic tubes, frozen veggie bags and some soft squeezable bottles. 05 (PP) Polypropylene The econd most popular plastic after PET, Polypropylene (PP) is incredibly versatile and with a high melting point, is used for microwave containers or storing hot liquids cooled in bottles, such as tomato sauce or syrup. PP doesn’t react to water, detergents, acids or bases, so doesn’t break down easily, making it durable to withstand daily wear and tear. PP is considered a low-toxin plastic due to its heat tolerance, reducing the amount of leaching when exposed to heat. It is mostly used for food and beverage

Page 8

AWSUM NEWS APRIL 2017

Living a healthy lifestyle has definitely become a trend, and while everyone is getting on the ‘eco-friendly’ bandwagon, and water consumption (and saving) is the word on everyone’s lips, have we stopped to consider the consequences of our water storage methods and the number of times we reuse the same plastic bottles? It’s a known fact that it takes more than 450 years for one plastic bottle to decompose in a landfill. This is a shocking statistic and it is important that all consumers and their households are educated on the various plastic grades, their health pitfalls and how to set the standards for ‘precycling’: the conscious choice to reduce plastic consumption. If you’re already reducing by reusing your plastic bottles, be mindful of the toxins that could be seeping into your water with every refill.

storage as they can be reused and store hot beverages. Uses include packaging textiles, carpets, stationary, battery cases, cups and plates, medical equipment, moulded shapes and nappies. Products made from polypropylene are recyclable, but do however take around 20 to 30 years to decompose. Burning PP can discharge highly toxic dioxins and vinyl chloride, further increasing the importance of recycling. 06 (PS) Polystyrene Polystyrene is made from combining styrene molecules. There are two types of polystyrene: High Impact Polystyrene (HIP) and Expanded Polystyrene (EPS). HIP is commonly used for toys, food containers, yoghurt tubs, stationary, cutlery and CD/DVD housing. This plastic is highly durable and transparent. ESP is used for protective packaging, cups, food trays, rigid plates, disposable cutlery, bread tags, stationary and toys. A 2014 National Research Council report lists styrene as a probably carcinogen, however mostly hazardous to workers producing polystyrene. These plastics are also said to leach toxic brominated flame retardants (chemical additives to make products less flammable) over their entire lifespan. According to Polystyrene Packaging Council (PSPC), polystyrene is recyclable up to 20 times before becoming contaminated and sent to the landfill. Polystyrene is recycled into coat hangers, seedling trays, skirtings, picture frames and lightweight concrete. 07 (O) – Bisphenol A (BPA) and others Grade 7 is a catch-all category for all other plastic types, including bioplastics and multi-layered resins. Toxic Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical used to produce polycarbonate plastics (sunglasses, CDs & DVDs), polyvinyl chloride plastics (portable electric devices, clothing such as fake leather, wire insulation) and epoxy resins (coatings for food cans, carbon fibre, fiberglass) since the 1960s. Bisphenol A is said to mimic the effects of the hormone oestrogen. It is linked to a wide range of ailments, including infertility and developmental damage, as well as being carcinogenic.

Considerations Understanding the list of plastics and potential pitfalls can feel quite overwhelming, as plastic is found in some many everyday products. So, what should you do? Be mindful when buying products. Consider the recycling codes and the number of times plastic can be used before it has to be dropped off at a recycling facility. Furthermore, when it comes to Grade One bottles, wash these regularly to prevent the growth of bacteria. An eco-friendly lifestyle is a journey of educating yourself and making sensible buying and usage decisions. Knowing your plastic recycling codes is an important milestone on this path to minimising your carbon footprint.

PRETORIA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL (t) 012-4307341 (e) info@phsg.org.za Back to the 80s Pretoria High School For Girls in collaboration with Pretoria Boys High School and Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool presented Back to the 80s – the totally awesome musical by Neil Gooding Those who attended the show between the 19th and 23rd April were taken on a journey … a journey to a time when Michael Jackson and Rick Astley were the Kings of Pop … a journey back to a time when bubble skirts and blue eye shadow were cool … a journey back to a time when the Atari was cuttingedge technology … A journey to the graduating class of William Ocean High School as they live through their final senior year – as they experienced the fun, the heartbreak, the loves and the loneliness of growing up – all set to the biggest hits of the 80s! Set in the USA, Back to the 80s tells the story of the senior class of William Ocean High School that graduated in the 1980s, as remembered and seen

through the eyes of Corey Palmer, who is now 50 something. The then 17-year-old Corey is madly in love with his next-door neighbour, Tiffany Houston, one of the coolest girls in the school. However, she barely notices this, as she is too busy mooning over Michael Feldman, the hottest guy around. Michael and his friends are athletic and good-looking – the kind of guys that Corey and his two best friends dream of being. However, while they may not be the coolest guys in school, they are still one up on Feargal McFerrin III, whose best friend is her computer, and who believes the crazy notion that one day CDs will replace cassette tapes. The year commences with Class President Elections: Michael steals Corey's election speech, and when he uses his ideas and promises the girls a kiss for a vote, he becomes President, with Tiffany as his Vice-President. Corey is left looking on despairingly.

During the year, several new students arrive at the school – Mel and Kim Easton (the all-singing, alldancing twin cheerleaders) and Eileen Reagan, whose life becomes a nightmare when Michael and his gang start to send her fake love letters. Meanwhile the teachers are having issues of their own. Mr Garlic, after being in a relationship for two years with the apparently conservative English teacher, Miss Sheena Brannigan, confiscates an old edition of Penthouse from a student, only to discover that his girlfriend is the centerfold. Throw in a Live Aid-type concert, high energy dance routines, the obligatory 80s party scene, copious amounts of blue eye-shadow, 20 cans of hairspray, as well as some of the most popular songs ever written, and the result was a musical that not only delighted and amused the audience of all ages, but also inspired the multi-talented cast and orchestra.

Consumer Science

Breaking ground Pretoria High School for Girls is delighted to be replacing old asbestos prefabricated class rooms with brand new rooms. Headmistress, Karen du Toit, broke ground on Wednesday, 19 April to formally commission the start of the project. The new buildings will be erected in style of the original architect, JS Cleland, to match the design and charm of the current buildings that were built in 1915.

Grade 11 Consumer Science students practise their Royal Icing skills on their perfectly baked cookies.

Life Sciences practical Our scientists of tomorrow demonstrate their skill in a food practical during Life Sciences. The girls test for the presence of monosaccharides, starch, lipids and proteins in different food types.

HOËRSKOOL WATERKLOOF (t) 012 347 0277/8 (e) admin@klofies.co.za Mnr. Daan Potgieter vereer Mnr.

Me. Grobler beste in Gauteng Me. Me. Ontwerp bestaan uit praktiese vaardigheid sowel as teorie. Ontwerp is Juffrou Anne-Marie se passie.

Johan van Wyk in Graad 12 is so ‘n lojale Klofie.

Leon Coetzer nou BlouBul-breier Mnr.

Barloworld Klofie-Netbalfees weer eens ‘n reuse sukses Hierdie jaar se Barloworld Klofie-netbalfees was weer eens ‘n reuse sukses!

VOOR: Danielle du Toit, Xenia Viljoen, me. Anell van der Walt (afrigter), mnr. Daan Potgieter (skoolhoof), Angelique Fryer, Robynne Coetzee.

READford Week

READford Week got off to a great start with the junior students dressing up as their favourite literary character on Character Day. They were treated to a show by Hooked on Books and then bought books at the book sale by the Book People. The day ended with a sponsored Read-a-thon. On Shakespeare Day, the senior students and their teachers dressed up as their favourite Shakespearean character, some from the Elizabethan era or dressed in modern clothes with a Shakespearean twist. The programme for the day included Grade 7 students who read their own sonnets, Grade 8 students who performed Shakespeare raps that they had written themselves, a performance by the drama department and ‘Shaking up Shakespeare’ by actor Matthew Ribnick.
