FRESH EGGS
NOURISH THE BODY
Welcome from Selborne College Selborne College is delighted to once again host Grey High School. We welcome all visitors from Port Elizabeth to enjoy this day with us. To our visitors, Grey High School, we extend a special welcome. Our association has been a long, happy, competitive one. The clashes between our two schools have provided school boy sport of the highest order. This year I am certain will be no different. It is also an opportunity for both communities to rekindle friendships which is a direct spinoff through these sporting interactions. Enjoy the day. Safe travelling. Mr Andrew Dewar. Headmaster of Selborne College
5 1. A few games into the year, how has the season been so far? The first rugby team has had a great season so far, the few losses early in the season, only made our boys more determined. 2. What does this fixture mean for your team or school in terms of your 2018 season? The Selborne College vs Grey HS match is our last fixture of the season and is always one of our toughest matches of the year. As the last match, it counts to how the season is portrayed. 3. What challenges are you currently facing? Our challenges are always to improve and raise the bar. 4. Who do you consider as your biggest opponents? Grey College and Grey High School are really tough matches. The derby’s between Selborne, Queen’s and Dale are our longest running derby’s and very dear to our hearts. 5. Please name a few players that have been standout players for your school? Our 5 SA Schools players: Thomas Bursey, Sibabalwe Xamlashe, Mnombo Zwelendaba, Jarrod Taylor and Jacques Goosen.

HISTORY
Selborne College History Selborne College was founded in 1872 by Pastor Heinrich Muller, a German settler, and at that stage was known as the Panmure Public School. In 1880 the first recorded sporting engagement involving the school took place, namely a cricket match against Dale College in King William’s Town. In 1892 another sporting milestone was reached when this school played its first rugby match. Again the opponents were Dale College. After Pastor Muller’s resignation in 1896, John Young piloted the school through an eventful seven year period that encompassed the South African War and saw the school move premises to Muir Street. It was under headmaster, George Rattray, in 1907 that the school was named Selborne College in honour of the Second Earl of Selborne, High Commissioner from 1905 to 1910, whose Selborne Memorandum became the blueprint for the Union of South Africa. The Selborne family coat of arms and motto were adopted as the College badge and motto. Palma Virtuti (‘Reward is to the Brave’) underpins the approach to both the academic and extra-curricular activities of the school. By 1920 it became evident that the school was once again outgrowing its premises and in May 1922 the foundation stone was laid by Sir Frederick de Waal, Administrator of the Cape, on the present site of Selborne College.
John Stonier took over the reins of the school in 1969, and was succeeded by Tim Gordon (1981 – 1992), in whose final year the East London City Council presented the College with an illuminated address in recognition of the school’s 120 years of service to the community. Alan Gunn served as Headmaster from 1993 until 2014. The first Old Selbornian to serve as Headmaster, Andrew Dewar, was appointed in 2015. Today, as Selborne College carries its standard proudly in the ranks of South Africa’s eminent schools, it keeps its traditions at heart: the solemn Ceremony of the Key, instituted in 1924 at the unveiling of the War Memorial statue of the young soldier that stands in front of the school, still takes place on Founders’ Day. This is when the boys reaffirm their recognition of the achievements and sacrifices of the past and of their responsibilities to the future. Selborne has built up an enviable reputation on the sports field and over the years has produced 56 Springboks. Among these Springboks are Geoff Chubb (Cricket), member of parliament André de Wet and Ray Carlson (Rugby), Jonty Skinner (Swimming), and the Scheckter brothers, Jody and Ian, who made their mark in international motor racing, Jody as Formula One world champion for Ferrari in 1979. Selborne’s most recent Springboks include Michael Orsmond (Wave-ski), Mark Boucher (Cricket) and rugby players Keith and Mark Andrews, André Vos and Brent Russell.
Traditions On 8 November 1924, Sir Frederic de Waal, then Administrator of the Cape Province, unveiled the War Memorial which stands in front of the school. At the conclusion of his service of Dedication, Sir Frederic turned to Charles Prior, Head Boy of the College, and handed him a large silver key. “You are to look after the monument and this consecrated ground on which we now stand”, he told Prior. “You have in keeping the memory of many men who made the supreme sacrifice. Their memory and what they died for will live forever as the generations come and go”. Later that month the first Ceremony of the Key was held as Prior passed his charge on to the 1925 Custodian and a new tradition was born. Every year since, a member of the incoming Matriculation Class has been elected by popular vote of his fellows as the Custodian of the Key for one year and the handing-over ceremony is now a traditional part of Founders’ Day proceedings. In September 1939 the Officer Commanding of the Cadet Detachment, Colonel Tim Harvey, gave the ceremony its present form and authentic military flavour. The format has remained unaltered to this day. The Key is regarded as a symbol
of guardianship of, and responsibility for, the traditions and values of Selborne. The “Changing of Guard”, with the Grade 12 group handing custody to the Grade 11’s symbolizes the passage of responsibility for, and leadership of the pupil body and all it holds dear, from those departing to those remaining. Those on parade at Founders’ Day are all current pupils at the College. Wreaths are laid to honour alumni (also known informally as Old Boys) who have paid the supreme sacrifice. The Founders’ Day is strongly supported by visiting Old Boys and their families. The guest speaker for Founders’ Day 2008 was past headmaster, Dr John Stonier.

Grey High School History Soon after the landing of the British Settlers in 1820, a small but flourishing settlement existed on the shores of Algoa Bay. Any form of organised education, however, was sadly lacking until the arrival of a Scottish graduate named John Paterson, who must be given most of the credit for establishing a small state-aided school in Chapel Street shortly after his arrival in 1839. He got Sir George Grey interested, and Sir George, being the Governor of the Cape Colony, made land available for endowment and set up a Board of Enquiry in 1855. John Paterson was a remarkably active man. In addition to his own business interests, he became a member of Parliament and was responsible for the establishment of the Standard Bank of South Africa. His big effort in getting Sir George Grey to take an interest in education led to the growth of the School to which Sir George gave his name, and the first headmaster was a Mr J. R. Macleish. In 1862, after the death of Mr Macleish, the school committee decided to advertise overseas for a Rector, a status to which the school was entitled because the Institute had revenue for Crown Lands. The Rev. H. I. Johnson became the first Rector and held the position from 1863 to 1872. He was followed by Rev. J. Thurlow, Mr J. Vipan and Mr E. Noaks. The arrival of Mr W. Chubb Meredith in 1892 was to be significant. It was he
who started the Old Greys\' Union, established a Cadet Corps, introduced school colours and encouraged sport. He actually started the Grey magazine and wrote the words of the School Song. Mr Meredith died in 1910 and was succeeded by Mr William Archer Way, who during his 17 years, undertook the colossal task of moving to and firmly establishing the School on its present site. He also encouraged the establishment of the boarding school. Coming from Graaff-Reinet, where he had been a headmaster, Mr Way, who had obviously made a major impact in the Karoo, found several boys following him to Port Elizabeth and helping to make the boarding school a viable proposition. In the 1920's, the number of pupils increased to such an extent that plans had to be made for the erection of a new and separate Junior School on the estate. Mr Way's successor in 1928 was Mr James Lang who introduced the school house system to Grey, naming the houses after the six Rectors mentioned above Johnson, Thurlow, Vipan, Noaks, Meredith and Way. In 1930, the Grey Junior school came into being under its first Headmaster, Mr E.G. Draycott. From this time, the name Grey Institute disappeared and the titles Grey High School and Grey Junior School came into existence.
