EARLY B Kletsrym met ‘n boodskap!

Quick questions:

At this stage the name Early B is well known throughout the country. This talented musician and rapper has been setting the local scene alight with his brilliant lyrics and storytelling abilities. The 28-year-old from Port Elizabeth has burst onto the scene in the last year and his album is the fresh breeze that we’ve wanted for so long. With hits like Ben Ten and Potte other famous musicians are lining up to collaborate with him. AWSUM caught up with Early B and this is his story. We have to start by asking you about your school career. Please tell our readers some more about your school background. Which school did you attend and what will you always remember? How would your teachers describe you? I attended Triomf Primary and Bethelsdorp Comprehensive High. The main reason I went to Bethelsdorp is because they offered motor mechanics as a subject and I was crazy about engines. My primary school teacher might say that I was hand full while my high school teacher would probably say I was rather naughty. Not mean, just naughty. I do remember we once grabbed the lawnmower and drove it around on the grass lawns. What time of teenager were you? I was always the one that wanted to make sure everyone else is feeling good. I enjoyed playing video games and outside in the streets with my friends. Whenever I played outside while still wearing my school clothes, I would be in loads of trouble when my mom found out. I always took chances when I could, and I believe this made me more creative. You are very proud about growing up in Port Elizabeth. What makes the area so special and unique? Bloemendal is one of the oldest areas in PE and the community is closely knit. The side I grew up on even more so. I was everyone child and everyone was my parents’ children too. The auntie in the street could give you a hiding and your own parents wouldn’t mind. What is your favourite song up until now and why? Dik vir Drugs is my favourite because its based on the heart-breaking reality that so many of our youngsters are faced with daily. All of my songs are like my very own children so its hard to choose an outright favourite. At this stage Dik vir Drugs deservers the most attention because of the valuable message it carries. You’ve worked with plenty of local bigname artists. Who would be your ultimate local and international artist? I don’t actually have a specific artist, but I always say that I love to work with people who love to make great music. Music will live on long after we’ve all passed on. I would love to leave something beautiful behind.

Editorial team

Going forward, what do you want to achieve as a musician? I grew up with music in my life and in many ways, I feel it opened my mind and enhanced my imagination. I would really love to keep on producing good music to inspire and help create a better world. If I only enhance one person’s life, I would be happy. I do believe that my music will give me the opportunity to achieve this in so many ways. What inspires you? The area I grew up in. For most of my life while living there I learnt so many different things. I laughed, I fought, and I cried in Bloemendal. Today all my inspiration comes from Bloemendal because the area is rich and unique. Ben Ten is one the catchiest songs we’ve heard in recent years. Is this song based on previous experiences or how do you decide what a song should be about? Ben Ten is based on some reality and fiction… that is all I’m willing to say. I usually listen to the beat without any idea of what I’m going to do. It comes down to how I feel when I listen to the beat and what memories it evokes. I always have tons of ideas, but I never force them onto my songs – it has to feel natural to me. Which city has the best crowds? Cape Town is unbelievable every time! How would you like to be remembered? The short artist whose music could make you smile when you’re sad, inspire when you’re in doubt and make you dance when you’re sitting down. What are you listening to in your car at the moment? Any song that’s stuck on repeat? Loufi – Hills. He’s a Port Elizabeth artist and this is the song which I literary play every single time. If you have to create a 3-step ‘how-toguide’ for teens wanting to make a success in the music industry, what would it be? Always be yourself. No one will or can do it better. Believe in yourself. There are loads of ‘nopeople’ out there. Work with what you have. You must start somewhere- I did. 2019 is certainly not over yet, what is in the pipeline for Early B? I’m working on a brand-new music video and I’ve got some new music coming out too.

Readers Are Leaders Day 2019 Pinelands North Primary School is fast-approaching its 75th birthday and during its history we have seen the school grow from strength to strength. Behind the scenes not only will you find a wonderfully diverse and passionate team of people, but also great leaders among its members. This is an example that we wish to set for our pupils, however we also wish to take it a step further. Each year we invite members of the community who we believe show great leadership qualities to read to our pupils. We also ask our “Leaders” to share a bit about themselves and the work that they do. Most importantly, we ask the Leaders to speak to the pupils about how reading has helped them to develop as a leader. This year on the 24th of April we hosted 12 guest speakers at our annual Readers Are Leaders Day. From academics to artists (one guest being both!), we had a diverse group of leaders speaking to, and hopefully inspiring, our pupils. We were very pleased that the Western Cape Minister of Education, Debbie Schäfer, took time out of her busy schedule to read to our grade 7s! Zyma Amien, Aaliyah Vayej, Dave Campbell, Andisani Makapela, Micaela Thomas, Christina Nomdo, Jerome Davies, Bevin and Cindy Jacobs, Nicole Jones and our very own Ann Morton completed our guest list. I could list all the work that each of them has done but I am afraid might take up the better part of your day just to read through. Just to give you some idea, however, our guests included a number of UCT graduates from a variety of disciplines from Fine Art to International Relations. Guests also included the current chairperson of the UCT Student Governance Court, religious leaders from the community, and the Planning Commissioner at the National Planning Commission. Suffice it to say, this is one talented, busy and dedicated group of people! Thank you also to author, Buhle Ngaba, for donating two copies of her book, The Girl Without A Sound to our library. Having hosted yet another successful Readers Are Leaders Day, we cannot wait for next year’s one!

Readers are Leaders 2019 who read to the pupils.
