Handré Pollard 22-year-old rugby star Handré Pollard is the new Bulls captain and has recently led the team to a 28–7 victory over Chiefs in a pre-season match. He started his senior career with the Blue Bulls as a 19-year-old. He made his Springbok debut on 28 June 2014 (against Scotland in the incoming tour series) and has 20 caps for the Springboks. He was a key contributor to South Africa’s resurgence from their shock defeat against Japan at the 2015 Rugby World Cup to reaching the semi-final against the All Blacks. He has scored 188 points in his short international career so far.
Q: Describe the experience to play against Paarl Boys’ High in the biggest Interschools match in the world. What is the exceptional relationship between the schools that makes this clash so special? A: It is always difficult to describe … it is something one cannot explain to people who were not at one of those schools. It is incredibly competitive, but very good friendships are also formed. The town (Paarl) is divided into two for that week and all academic responsibilities are pushed aside. Q: What was it like to play in a World Cup tournament? A: It was truly a dream come true! To play in a test for the Boks is already amazing, but to represent your country in the World Cup is something completely else. Even though we just came short, it was the proudest moment of my life. I hope I get such an opportunity again. Q: What is the best part of being a professional rugby player? A: The friendships and bonds that are formed. Everyone plays for different reasons. I play to provide for my family one day, yes, but also for the friendships and the feeling in the locker room after a win. Q: What is less pleasant about your career, apart from injuries? A: We can only play for a limited time and must be able to live after rugby. The number of days away from home – yes, it is wonderful to be on tour and see the world, but time with family and friends is precious. Q: You were on the sideline for quite some time with injuries. How did you keep yourself busy? A: The rehab part of an injury takes much more time than people realise. Any rugby player will tell you that it is harder to come back from injury than what it is to play. But I played a lot of golf and spent time with friends and family. Q: As the new Super Rugby captain of the Bulls, how do you regard this challenge, especially in light of your relatively young age? A: I am young, but I’ve been playing senior rugby for quite a while and have a lot of experience. I will do my best to use everything I have learned up to now and that I will still learn this year to lead my team, and also to lead by example.

Q: How have you experienced the recent matches in Australia, where you played a Super Rugby warm-up game against Chiefs and also took part in the Brisbane Global Tens? A: There were many positives and also negatives, at which we will be hard at work to fix before the Stormers game. But on the whole it was a very good tour, and it was also good for the team spirit. Q: How do you feel about your chances in the upcoming Super Rugby tournament, starting for the Bulls against the Stormers in Cape Town on 25 February? A: I believe we have a very good chance, just like all the other teams. We participate to win the competition – anything else we will regard as unsuccessful. Q: How do you handle the fame and attention that come your way as a high profile player? A: Oh, there are pros and cons. One should always remember that you were young at one time and looked up to the Boks. As long as your support system with family and friends are in place, everything else is minor. Q: What are the goals that you would like to reach in your rugby career? A: At the moment, just to be back on the field and to do my best for the Bulls and hopefully to get back into the Bok squad. I will then again look at my goals. Q: What makes your heart beat faster when you are away from the rugby field?A: My My fiancée, Marise Malherbe! Q: What are your hobbies? Other sports you enjoy playing? A: I am crazy for golf – even though I can’t play often, I enjoy it a lot.

Q: You attended Paarl Gymnasium High School. What was the experience like to be at such a prestigious high school? How did it influence your rugby career? A: It was an incredible experience. I have learned to constantly play at the highest level of South African schools rugby and to handle the pressure.
Q: What is your wish for Springbok rugby? A: My wish is for the South African public to be behind the Boks. The past twelve months were not good, but we have incredible talent in the country and can be the best in the world again.

Lemon meringue pie I find most lemon meringue pies to be rather sickly and insipid with hardly a hint of lemon. This one has a real lemon kick with a lovely smooth curd. It is rich, though, and not for the fainthearted.
Serves 4–6 INGREDIENTS • 1 packet (200 g) Tennis biscuits • 125 ml (½ cup) melted butter grated rind and juice of 4 lemons • 1 tin (385 g) condensed milk • 3 extra-large eggs, separated • 2,5 ml (½ tsp) cream of tartar • 180 g castor sugar • 2,5 ml (½ tsp) baking powder
METHOD • Preheat the oven to 180 °C. • Crush the biscuits. I do this by bashing the biscuits into crumbs using a double plastic shopping bag, tied loosely, and a rolling pin. • In a small bowl, mix the biscuit crumbs with the melted butter. Press the mixture into a shallow pie plate. Smooth with the back of a spoon. • In a bowl, mix together the

lemon rind, lemon juice, condensed milk and egg yolks. • Pour into the crumb base. • In a clean dry bowl, beat the egg whites to a soft peak. Add the cream of tartar and beat until the peaks are very stiff. Add the castor sugar, one tablespoon at a time, beating after each addition. Beat in the baking powder once the egg whites and sugar have formed a stiff meringue. • Spoon the meringue onto the egg mixture and cover gently. Swirl the meringue into peaks with the back of the spoon. • Bake for 20 minutes. Turn the oven off but leave the pie in the oven to cool down completely. This dries the meringue slightly. • Best served chilled.

Daniel Miskey smashes 134 On Tuesday, 31 January, York High cricketer Daniel Miskey (Grade 12) made school history in the local CSA Pro20 league. The match was played against Knysna High School on their field on the Waterfront Drive. York won the toss and elected to bat first. Daniel opened the batting and proceeded to make 134 runs off just 70 balls! His remarkable innings included hitting 6 sixes in one over. This amazing achievement has never been done at York before. Leierskapontwikkelingskamp Laerskool Park se prefekte het die naweek van 10 en 11 Februarie op ‘n leierskapontwikkelingskamp gegaan te Eagle Falls, Oudtshoorn. Hier het hulle sommer baie nuwe vaardighede en idees ontwikkel wat hulle weer kan terugploeg in die skool.

Landsdienskamp 105 van Laerskool Park se leerders het die voorreg gehad om saam met Laerskole Outeniqua en GeorgeSuid op Landsdienskamp te gaan te Swartvlei (Sedgefield). Die tema vir die naweek was ‘Water is lewe’. Ons het die kamp terdeë geniet en het hope nuwe vriendskappe gebou.
HOËRSKOOL LANGENHOVEN Eden-atletiekspan Marlé van Wyk (Graad 10) en Tinka Fox (Graad 9) is in die Eden (SWD) atletiekspan vir gestremdes opgeneem. Hierdie Dasse gaan vanaf 31 Maart tot 5 April aan die SASAPD SA-kampioenskappe te Port Elizabeth deelneem. Marlé is vir 100m, 200m en 400m en Tinka vir gewigstoot en spiesgooi gekies Hulle positiwiteit op die lewe en die uitdagings wat hulle oorkom en aanpak, bly ‘n groot inspirasie vir baie mense.

Suid-Kaap-gholf Jan Human (Graad 8), kranige gholfspeler van Hoërskool Langenhoven, is vir die 0/15 Suid-Kaap-gholfspan gekies. Hy gaan vanaf 18 tot 20 Maart die SuidKaapspan te Fish River verteenwoordig.
Dassie presteer in skyfskiet Lourens van Vuuren (Graad 8) het puik tydens die Wes-Kaap Provinsiale kompetisie in Luggeweer, te Bellville, presteer. Lourens het op 4 Februarie in die 0/14-afdeling in twee dissiplines deelgeneem (3 posisies en 10m staan). Hy verwerf twee goue medaljes, skiet sy persoonlike beste, en het ook die beste telling van alle ouderdomsgroepe op die baan behaal.

Das-atlete verbeter rekords Die atlete het op Woensdag, 8 Februarie tydens die Hessequa-atletiekbyeenkoms puik presteer. Twee atlete het rekords gebreek: Margeaux Pienaar het die rekord in diskus (Dogters 0/14) en Elzé van Tonder het die rekord in gewigstoot (Dogters 0/17) gebreek. 24 leerders gaan aan die SWD-uitnodigingsbyeenkoms deelneem.
Op 9 Februarie was dit tyd vir die jaarlikse Valentynsokkie en -fliek. Daar kan na nog vele geleenthede later die jaar uitgesien word, soos Deurnag, Kaskarkaskenades, Mnr. & Mej. Langenhoven en Junior en Senior Bal.

College House (Glenwood House Boarding School) Someone once said that a house is just a structure with walls, a roof and empty rooms. Should you wish to make a house more than just an ordinary house, you must add people, characters, laughter, sounds, and so on. In the end, the house is not just a structure anymore, it becomes a home – it has a heart! Thomas Lidstone amazed his audience with his life story of his soft toy. The Grade 8 boarders - called Squids, had to carry a soft toy around for two weeks and present their toy’s life story in front of the entire house during dinner. All soft toys were then donated to the George Hospital Paediatric Unit.
Glenwood House School’s boarding house was officially named College House at the beginning of 2017. The former house parents, Danie and Marina Oosthuizen, did the honours and are enjoying a glass of bubbly. Joining them is Head Boy, Joshua Barrett.

At the Glenwood House boarding house’s inauguration, the Grade 8 boarders were treated to a fancy dinner. They were even allowed to dish first on the evening and they enjoyed their first meal as fully fledged College House boarders (although they will still be Squids for the rest of their Grade 8 year).

Oakdalers staan uit in jeugskou
41 atlete het op 17 en 18 Februarie aan die SWD-kampioenskap op Oudtshoorn deelgeneem en 16 goud-, 13 silwer- en 11 brons medaljes huis toe gebring. Daar sal nou baie hard geoefen word vir die Wes-Kaapkampioenskap wat op 17 en 18 Maart op Dal Josaphat-stadion in die Paarl aangebied word. Seween-twintig van Oakdale se atlete sal SWD vanjaar tydens hierdie byeenkoms verteenwoordig.
Tydens die Riversdal-skou het 68 leerders aan die Jeugskoukompetisie in die klasse skape, beeste, pluimvee en bokke deelgeneem. Die Oakdalers verwerf 6 eerste, 6 tweede, 9 derde, 8 vierde en 8 vyfde plekke. Hanteringsvaardighede met diere, asook die sinchronisasie daarvan in spanverband, word beoordeel – verseker ‘n vaardigheid wat slegs met baie en gereelde oefening verkry word. Oakdale is landwyd toonaangewend in jeugskouprestasies. Christiaan Theunissen (Graad 9) met Okalash’s Handsome Private is vir die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar in die Driegang Plesierperdklas as Groot-kampioen gekroon.

SWD-atletiek
Die leerders het ‘n uiters besige en vrugbare week beleef tydens die jaarlikse Oakdale-jeugweek. Riekert Botha, bekende prediker, het op Oakdale gekuier en diep onder die vel van elke Oakdaler ingekruip. Afgesien van sy individuele gesprekke met leerders, het al die Oakdalers saans van 18:15 tot 19:30 bymekaar gekom. Die seuns se lewens is op tasbare wyse aangeraak deur die aanbiedings. Die hoogtepunt van die Jeugweek was die pa-en-seunaand wat op Donderdagaand aangebied is. Ongeveer 250 pa’s het met tente op die Populierbosveld uitgekamp en die byeenkoms saam met hul seuns bygewoon. Hierna is daar gebraai en het seun en pa saam in hul tentjie geslaap. Hierdie oomblikke van saamwees word op besondere wyse gekoester. Vrydagoggend het 220 pa’s die manne-ontbyt saam met Riekert Botha in die saal bygewoon waar hy met die pa’s gesels het oor die onderwerp “Tugmeester of Vader”. Oakdalers kyk terug na ‘n uiters genotvolle en sinvolle week, bewus van die Genade wat hulle elke dag uit Sy hand ervaar.

Oakdale-tennis kerngesond Die o.15-tennisspan het aan die Boland Landbouskool-tennistoernooi in die Paarl deelgeneem. Die span wen Hoër Landbouskool Marlow, Paarl Boys High B en Hoërskool Stellenbosch om deur te dring na die finaal teen Paarl Gimnasium. Oakdale behaal die tweede plek op die toernooi. Duther Theron was onoorwonne in die enkelspel en wen ook al die Duther Theron – dubbelspelwedstryde saam Elkan onoorwonne! Willemse.

Interskole Punt Atletiek het ‘n goeie Interskole teen HS Outeniqua, HS Oudtshoorn en Langenhoven Gim beleef. Punt het die dag in ‘n stewige 2de plek geëindig. Ons is trots op ons 16 goue, 32 silwer en 21 brons medaljes.

Tennis Mazizi Jantjies van PW Botha Kollege is in die SWD o/19-tennisspan opgeneem. Hierdie spelers gaan in die Aprilvakansie aan die SA Toernooi in Pretoria deelneem.
Francois Schoeman van PW Botha Kollege het baie goed gevaar in die Boston Kollege se CompTIA-rekenaareksamen. Die kursus duur tien weke en is deur leerlinge in skole in die Wes-Kaap gevolg en daarna is hulle geassesseer. Francois het die beste uit 150 leerlinge in die provinsie gevaar en het 94% behaal. Francois is baie goed met rekenaarprobleme en het ‘n natuurlike aanleg in hierdie vakgebied.
