AWSUMCelebrity Interview Leandie du Randt is an actress, presenter, MC, motivational speaker and author of the self-help book Comfortable In Your Own Skin. She is well-known for her roles in soapies such as Binnelanders and Getroud met Rugby and films such as Semi-Soet and Klein Karoo. She has won numerous acting awards over the years, and was runner-up in Season 7 of Strictly Come Dancing South Africa. We caught up with her to chat about the new blockbuster, Jagveld, to be released in movie theatres in March, and life in general. Q: Jagveld, the movie adaption of yet another Deon Meyer bestseller, sees you in the lead role as Emma le Roux. The film centres around Emma seeing a murder and the killers hunting her down as she flees. Emma, however, is the daughter of recce Jacques le Roux, who taught her everything he knows. Nothing about this hunt goes right and it becomes about survival of the fittest. Tell us about how this role was different. What were the challenges? What did it mean to you as actress? A: All I am allowed to say now is that I looooved this role and this film is a must-see from 17 March 2017 – definitely a first for SA! Q: What was the highlight(s) of your career this far? A: One of them is being able to tour to 60 different towns with my self-help book and motivational talk, #NoOneCanBeatYouAtBeingYou in 2016. Another one is being able to play an action role in Jagveld, opening on 17 March 2017. Q: What is your biggest dream at the moment? What would you really like to achieve professionally? A: I would love to play in international productions where the budgets allow you to train for months for a role before you film, and to do my motivational talks internationally. Q: Which professional actor/actress is your role model? Why? A: I have many role models for different parts of my life and career and it depends in what phase I am in my life. But I love Kate Hudson, Alicia Vikander and Nina Dobrev. Q: You studied Industrial Psychology – in fact, you excelled, with two degrees cum laude! How did you end up in the entertainment industry? A: Thank you. I won Miss Personality in my first year pagaent and the prize was Brümilda van Rensburg’s drama course. She trained me and connected me to the right people and opportunities and then, because God is able to do anything, that all synchronized. Q: You came second in Season 7 of Strictly Come Dancing South Africa. What was this experience like? What did you learn? What did you enjoy most? A: It changed my life. I realised that no matter how old you are, you can always learn a new skill and achieve something if you really work hard and believe it in your heart. I loved it so much to work hard and see results. My mind also grew stronger through all that stress and pressure on live TV. I am forever grateful for that great experience and to my dance partner, Brandon Eilers le Riche. and his beautiful wife, Natalie, who coached me, and my husband, Bouwer Bosch, who supported me mentally, physically and emotionally. You realise how much people’s support mean in that competition and it humbles you immensely.

Q: You self-help book for teens, Comfortable In Your Own Skin, became a bestseller. What inspired you to write this book? What did you hope to achieve? Would this book’s advice have been helpful to you as a teenager? A: I would hope that it would be helpful for me if I was a teenager. I wrote it to inspire girls to be themselves in a time where we get brainwashed to conform and look and be a certain way. Don’t compare yourself to anyone, because you are you and no one can beat you at being you – so focus on that and treasure that. Q: What’s your best advice for teenage girls to be healthy and happy and to deal with bodyimage issues? A: Live a balanced life. Get healthier by eating clean and get exercise – don’t focus on being skinny, but to be healthy physically and to be the best version of you outwardly, but most importantly inwardly. It doesn’t matter that you look like a goddess if your heart is aching and dirty – then that outward appearance is gonna fade and not be so rewarding as you thought. It starts in the mind – what you think you become, so think grateful thoughts and believe that anything is possible. Try and live healthy 80% of the time and indulge 20% of the time. All of us have different bodies and shapes, so don’t try and look like someone else – you will never succeed in that; try and look the best that you know you can. This is no competition, because no one is you. Q:Tell us about your childhood and where you grew up. A: I grew up in a small town, Makwassie, till I was nine and we moved to Kempton Park. I am very fortunate to have grown up in a loving and supporting home and family. My father is a reverend, my mom used to be a teacher and my brother is a CA. My mother passed away in 2014. Bless her lovely soul. Q: You tied the knot with Afrikaans singer Bouwer Bosch late in 2015 with an abandoned factory as the perfect backdrop to the fairytale wedding. How has married life been? A: All I can say is that I am so grateful to be married to my best friend. Q: What is in the pipeline for 2017? A: Lots of talks again, and films – and in this world anything is possible, so let’s see!

Peppered fillet with salsa verde Serves 4– 6
FOR THE FILLET • 1.5 kg beef fillet • 1 tbsp beef tallow, melted • Himalayan salt and black pepper • 1 cup Dijon mustard • 3 tbsp pink peppercorns, lightly crushed
FOR THE SALSA VERDE • 30 g rocket, chopped • 30 g dill, chopped • 30 g basil leaves, chopped • 2 anchovies, chopped • 1 tsp Dijon mustard • 1 tbsp capers, chopped • juice of ½ lemon • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil • Himalayan salt and black pepper
METHOD • Preheat the oven to 200 °C. Brush fillet with melted tallow and season well. Place a large frying pan over a high heat, sear the fillet on all sides until browned, then remove and set aside.
• Brush fillet with mustard and roll in pink peppercorns, place on a lined baking tray and roast for 20 minutes. Remove and allow to stand for 20 minutes before slicing. • For the salsa verde: Mix together the rocket, dill, basil, anchovies, Dijon mustard and capers. Stir in the lemon juice and olive oil. Season. • To serve: Slice the fillet and serve with the salsa verde.

Atletiekdag Op Vrydag, 13 Januarie skop Laerskool Knysna die jaar met ‘n “bang” af. Die eerste Vrydag van die kwartaal was soos oudergewoonte die jaarlikse atletiek-dag. Die groen-, blou- en rooispan het opgetof en met ‘n groot geraas gestap na die hoërskoolsportveld. Danksy die haarfyn beplanning was die dag weer eens ‘n reusesukses. Baie dankie aan al die onderwysers, ouers en leerders wat die dag seepglad laat verloop het. ‘n Spesiale dankie ook aan die Knysna Verkeersdepartement en die Knysna Brandweer wat gehelp het om ons kinders veilig te hou gedurende die optog.
Night Athletics On Wednesday, 18 January and Thursday, 19 January, KPS had the night athletics on the school field. The qualified children took part in the different events and first, second and third places were awarded. On Thursday night, the children did hurdles and the track items. In the end the Red team won with a whopping 2092 points. The Blue team was second with 1862 and the Green team third with 1700, but won the Team Spirit Trophy. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible.

Outeniqua Primary’s Prefect Body of 2017 departed on Friday, 20 January for their annual camp at De Hoek, Oudtshoorn. They were accompanied by Mr Bezuidenhout and Mrs Olivier. The activities over the weekend were organised by Solo Outdoor Experiences from Oudtshoorn. All the activities were geared towards being a successful Prefect Body. Other than obstacle courses out in the bush, the learners ventured into the local caves and got to know the indigenous vegetation of the area on foot. Teamwork and problem solving were pivotal concepts when it came to more serious presentations. Great fun was had by all and Outeniqua is looking forward to an exellent year with this strong team of Grade 7s as role models.

Gees, prestasies en musiek by Dasse-atletiek Hoërskool Langenhoven het op Donderdag, 19 Januarie 2017, die atletiekseisoen met ‘n opwindende kleure-byeenkoms begin. Daar is vanjaar ses nuwe rekords opgestel. Richard Marshall, 2017 se hoofseun, het die rekords in beide die diskus- en spiesgooi-items vir seuns 0/19 verbeter. Lazlo Paulsen het ook twee rekords verbeter, in die 1500m en 800m vir seuns 0/15. Stephani Heenop het die rekord in driesprong vir dogters 0/17 verbeter en Lazlo Paulsen, Richard Marshall, Alika Steyn, Jowin Pieterse, Elzé van Tonder en Stephani Heenop. Jowin Pieterse het die rekord in 200m vir seuns 0/19 verbeter. Die hoogste punt op ASA se tabel is deur Elzé van Tonder behaal met 850 punte vir gewigstoot vir dogters 0/19. Sy het ook die diskus-item gewen. Die ywerige geelspan het beide die bekers vir die meeste punte en die geesbeker verower. Die Senior Victrix Ludorum is Elzé van Tonder, die Senior Victor Ludorum is Jowin Pieterse, die Junior Victrix Ludorum is Alika Steyn en die Junior Victor Ludorum is Lazlo Paulsen.

Rut Gouws, ‘n Graad 8-leerder, het die naweek van 14 Januarie te Bloubergstrand, aan die Suid-Afrikaanse vlieërbranderykompetisie (kitesurfing) deelgeneem en uitstekend presteer. Sy het ‘n derde plek in die vroue opeafdeling behaal, wat allerhande draaie, spronge en toertjies tydens spronge behels. Rut was ook die jongste deelnemer in die kompetisie en is dus die beste in haar ouderdomsgroep in die land.

Interhuis Atletiek 2017
PW Botha Kollege het op Vrydag, 20 Januarie 2017 hulle jaarlikse Interhuis Atletiek gehad. Dit was ‘n suksesvolle dag gewees en die atlete het vir ons gewys dat hulle verskeie talente het. Wildernis het die span- en geesbeker gewen. Baie geluk aan die volgende leerders:

OAKDALE LANDBOUSKOOL Oakdale bars uit sy nate Oakdale het op Dinsdag, 10 Januarie 105 Graad 8-leerders geregistreer. Van hierdie groep nuwe Bulletjies maak 101 gebruik van koshuisinwoning en is afkomstig van reg oor die Wes-Kaap en selfs Pietersburg. Volgens die skoolhoof, mnr. André Latsky, is die skool baie opgewonde oor die Graad 8-groep van 2017 wat oor die volgende vyf jaar ‘n nuwe vlak van prestasies en tradisies tot die skool sal toevoeg. Die skool herdenk vanjaar sy 89ste bestaansjaar en spog vanjaar met die hoogste leerdertal in die bestaan van die skool.

Twee vriende = 16 A simbole! Jacobus en Amre het beide 8 onderskeidings behaal het! Jacobus het Afr. Huistaal 83%, Eng. FAL 87%, Wisk. 97%, LO 88%, Fisiese Wetenskappe 96%, Rek. 94%, RTT 90%, IGO 92% en was eerste, terwyl Amre sesde was met Afr. FAL 92%, Eng. HS 86%, Wisk. 84%, LO 89%, Rek. 83%, RTT 84%, Besigheidstudies 94% en Musiek 82%. Beide was kranige sportmanne in ‘n verskeidenheid sportsoorte, het aan kultuur deelgeneem, soos koorsang, maar het ook in dramaproduksies van die skool gespeel. Kwaggas gee om vir die gemeenskap
Die opgewonde leerders van die VGK Primêre Skool by Sinksabrug ontvang hul Santa Shoeboxes.
Die Kwaggas se welynsportefeulje het einde laasjaar deelgeneem aan die Shoebox for Santa-projek. Klasse het ‘n skoenboks ontvang wat deur Redi Pak geskenk is en leerders kon enige bruikbare item daarin plaas. Alle leerders van die skool kon aan die projek deelneem. Leerders het ook by die Geelhoutboomskool gaan help om hul biblioteek te organiseer en reg te pak. Die lede van die welsynsportefeulje van Hoërskool Outeniqua het met groot deernis ook uitgereik na minderbevoorregte gemeenskappe en vir die kinders lekker voedsame sop voorberei. Kwagga-waardes word op hierdie maniere weerspieël in dade van omgee en liefde. Daar is baie geleenthede vir nuwe Kwaggas om hulself ook op hierdie terrein uit te leef en betrokke te raak by die welsynsaksies van ons skool.
