AWSUM Celebrity Interview

National Braai Day & Braai Tour Epic scenery, road-tripping adventure, earlymorning coffee in the great outdoors, stunning campsites and more braais than you can shake a stukkie wors at – there can be nothing more South African than the annual National Braai Tour, the perfect starter ahead of National Braai Day, as organised by the iconic Jan Braai. We caught up with Jan as he and his 200-strong cavalcade set off on the National Braai Tour. Q How did the whole National Braai Day initiative come about? A We love to braai, of that there is no argument. As a nation, we are united like no other time on National Braai Day. We share stories, relax, unwind, reflect and just enjoy the country that has given us the opportunity to burn large quantities of braai wood. And in 2017, there is more than one opportunity to unite around a fire. Q What is special about this year’s National Braai Day? Q How does the National Braai Tour actually work? A Thanks to National Braai Day falling on a Sunday this year, there is a whole Saturday at your disposal to prepare for the country’s greatest public holiday. Inspired by the Dutch holiday of King’s Night ahead of King’s Day, we encourage all South Africans to take part in National Braai Night the evening before National Braai Day. This is the chance for the braaiers of South Africa to get into the National Braai Day groove early. It’s the party braai to National Braai Day’s relaxing braai. Q But wait, there’s more to the braai movement – just before National Braai Day, you and a 200-strong travelling carnival will also be touring the country as the National Braai Tour. What happens during this tour? A Think of it as a political rally ahead of an election, only we are not canvassing for votes, we’re calling on millions of South Africans to unite around fires and celebrate our heritage. Now in its fifth year, the National Braai Tour acts as a smokey, flame-grilled messenger for National Braai Day, with participants of the Tour spreading braai cheer throughout the country and ramping up public excitement for our country’s fast-approaching biggest day of braai. The 2017 edition of the Braai Tour starts in Cape Town on 10 September and will stop in at iconic venues like Cape Agulhas, Calitzdorp, Plettenberg Bay and Storms River before culminating in Port Elizabeth. Q What is the purpose of the National Braai Tour? A It is all about showcasing our vision of nation-building around a fire. A blueprint of sorts on how to best celebrate heritage month and Heritage Day. It’s about bringing diverse people together to enjoy the one thing that unites us all, cooking and celebrating around an open fire. It’s also an opportunity to build public excitement and momentum towards 24 September in a way that gets South Africans thinking about and celebrating their own heritage, our shared heritage, and how great it is to be a South African.

AWSUM NEWS SEPTEMBER 2017

A As always, the route has been selected to take in the diversity of the South African countryside and to showcase historically significant spots along the way. The aim of the National Braai Tour is for participants to enjoy themselves, but also to learn more about this great country. Q Why do participants have to have South African flags? A At registration each participant is issued with a full-size South African flag on an individual sized pole. These flags are carried by participants at all times. It’s the rainbow wave of the Tour. Q What is the role of National Braai Day and the National Braai Tour in our country? A They are reminders that we as inhabitants of such a wonderfully diverse country have something in common. Our country has a rich and diverse heritage and this needs to be celebrated. But it is essential to share one thing, and that one thing just happens to be the nation’s love for cooking food over the coals of a fire. We have much to celebrate as a nation and as diverse people. What better way to do that than with a Tour that teaches you about our collective heritage, your fellow South Africans and a day that encourages you to celebrate around a fire. Q You are the first AWSUM celebrity to appear on our cover twice – congrats! What do you make of that? A That is really AWSUM – and says a lot about our love for the braai! Thank you – I look forward to more.

FASHION

Spring is sprung and yes, it’s great to be young. So get out there and show off! Pepe Sofianos has found some eyepopping ways to make it all happen.

IT’S SHOWTIME !

Black shadow print muscle vest with hood, R299, Cotton On. Picture print muscle tank, R69.99 and black “Lucky” vest, R59.99, both Mr Price.

I’M LOVING… Off-the-shoulder anything because it’s the instant way to update and add a dash of flirty flair to your wardrobe. If Kendall Jenner likes to live in this bareshoulder look, so can we. Enjoy!

Line the waterline inside your eyes with a royal or aqua blue like model and actress Cara Delevigne does.

Navy “Strong” muscle vest, R59.99, Mr Price.

Model of the moment, Gigi Hadid, is totally into off-the shoulder tops worn with jeans, her fave down time look.

Are you ready to show off some muscles? Muscle tank tops are set to be the top style squad trend for the hot season ahead. Even if you’re not a fitness freak you can still be a cool dude in this trendy tank top. It’s really a vest but has morphed into a pared-down T with “breezy” armholes that’s comfy and easy to wear anytime. Find a good balance between too loose and too tight --- the new slim fit option is just perfect because you don’t want flapping arm holes! To get the look right, stick with tank tops that fall just below your belt loops or waistband of your shorts so you can let your arms breathe without showing off your six pack, nice as it is. Keep that for the beach or pool…

Hey man! Rapper Tyga proves you don’t have to look like The Rock to rock a muscle vest.

HEY MR MUSCLE!

HOW TO BE HOT AND G IVE EVERYO THE COLD S NE H O U L D E R Every new season everyone is

obsessed with the new trends and if you’re not seen wearing them, you are virtually fashion road kill. So wait for it --- this sunny season it’s all about the off-theshoulder/cut-out shoulder look. Get ready to flaunt your bare shoulders in pretty off-theshoulder tops with voluminous, ruffled sleeves or ruched and elasticised necklines that hug the bottom of your shoulder blades and shoulder cutouts with bra straps. Exposed shoulders are the coolest way to show some skin. And the good news --- unlike other bits of the bod, they always look OK. We might be flooded with shoulder-baring looks right now but guess what, this “new” look has been around on-and-off the scene since the 1960’s when legendary French actress Brigitte Bardot put her own sassy spin on this fashion icon that has survived to become today’s jet set style. So go girl, go!

Blue striped top, R249.99, The Fix.

Black T-shirt with cut-outs, R89.99, Mr Price.

DRAW A LINE

All eyes on Spring! Eyeliner is the big focus but with a twist… The look is graphic and OTT in brilliant blues and greens that make it impossible for anyone to look away from you. Celebs and social media stars are besotted with this unexpected and fun pop of colour for eyes. The key is to keep the rest of your makeup subtle and centered around the look with eyelids clean. Forget picture-perfect straight lines. The new liner look is all about free expression, bold shades and artistic strokes. You just need to draw a line and then let your imagination go. There are no rules, so whether your line-drawing skills are like a budding Picasso or more like a jumpy spider, you can frame your eyes with zany lines that say it all. You can also exaggerate the look with toning shadows that echo the liner so you get a 3-D look –-- totes eyecatching. Who could resist you? Why not go all-out like the runway models and play up your eyebrows as well – just sweep your liner along the curve of your brow and in your eye crease for a lavish linear look. * All prices are correct at time of going to print. Merchandise from selected stores. Stocks may be limited.

Pink gingham blouse with ties, R219.99, The Fix.

Black and white gingham top with cut-out shoulders, R349, Cotton On.

Rust top with bra-strap shoulders, R49.99, Mr Price.

Pink offshoulder top with flared sleeves, R399, Cotton On.

@ PEPE SAYS

If you’ve got something to say, say it. If you’ve got something to show, show it. ‘Nuff said.

If you aren’t sure about this new flexiliner trend, then do your own thing in muted pastel liners or wet a pretty pastel shimmery shadow and use that to line your eyes. Heritage Da Chocolate Fondant Potjie Pudding WHAT YOU NEED

WHAT YOU DO

(feeds 8)

1. Make the batter, part 1: In your no. 10 flat-bottomed baking potjie, whisk the egg and then use your wooden spoon and mix the butter, milk and vanilla with the whisked egg. 2. Make the batter, part 2: Now mix the flour, cocoa, salt, sugar and chopped chocolate pieces into the wet mixture of step 1. Just use the sugar and cocoa specified as ingredients for the batter, not the sugar and cocoa for the sauce, which only comes in the next step. Everything needs to be mixed properly so use a wooden spoon and put in some effort. If you’re unfit get one of your friends or family members to help you, or buy yourself a cordless stick blender (it changed my life). 3. Make the sauce: Stir the sugar, cocoa powder and boiling water together until all the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Slowly pour this hot cocoa-sugar-water mixture over the dough mixture that is already in the pot. 4. Bake: Put the lid on the potjie and bake for 25 minutes by placing coals under the pot and a lot of coals on the lid of the pot. Your work of art is ready when the top is firm to the touch. 5. Serve with fresh cream or ice cream.

For the batter

There is a medical reason why you should eat chocolate. The scent of the chocolate increases theta brain waves, which induces relaxation. We all know how vitally important it is to destress, relax and feel good about your life. And this is why you and your loved ones should consume the baked chocolate potjie as often as possible. It will make you a better person.

Enjoy Heritage Day and our very own National Braai Day on 24 September with these two exclusive recipes by Jan Braai, founder of National Braai Day.

Bacon & Cider Roosterkoek

WHAT YOU NEED

I am a massive fan of roosterkoek and the culinary giants bacon and cider also make regular appearances at my braai fire. Together, they will change the way you look at roosterkoek forever. The word ‘roosterkoek’ is Afrikaans for a bread roll baked on your grid over the coals of a wood fire. To my mind, the word is part of common language in South Africa and can de facto be used in all 11 official languages. Everything about this recipe is great – few ingredients, a very easy process and a fantastic tasting result. As it happens, these roosterkoek go very well with any type of braaied meat.

(makes 8) • 1 packet bacon (250 g of your favourite type) • 1 small packet self-raising flour (500 g) • 1 tsp salt • 1 tot olive oil • 1 bottle cider

WHAT YOU DO 1. Either braai the bacon on a grid over coals until crisp or fry it in a pan until crisp. Remove from the heat, let it cool down and chop into small pieces. 2. To your favourite mixing bowl add the self-raising flour, salt and crispy braaied chopped-up bacon. Mix this using one of your recently washed hands. 3. Add the olive oil and cider. Using one or both of your recently washed hands, mix and knead everything together. You do not need to overdo this step. Be lazy and knead as little as possible; as soon as everything is properly combined you’re good to go. 4. Use your hands and on a flat surface, shape this stretchy piece of dough into a flat rectangle or square as well as you can manage. Now use a sharp knife and cut the dough into 8 or 9 equal portions. Fix the shape of each one slightly and you’re done. Using extra flour to dust the dough throughout this process makes it infinitely easier to deal with.

PHOTO Matthys van Lill

5. Braai on a grid over medium-heat coals for about 15 to 20 minutes. It is important to turn the roosterkoek often, so that they do not burn, but get cooked through. The outside should be crispy and ever so slightly charred here and there, and the inside obviously done. If there is a hollow sound when you tap them, they are ready. Insert a sharp knife into one and if it comes out clean, you know for a fact that they are ready. 6. Serve warm with butter and cheese or with any braaied meat. © Jan Braai – The Democratic Republic of Braai, Bookstorm 2015

Interskolesukses vir Oakdale

VOOR: Dihan Rademan, Joaquin Taute, Le Roux Pepler, Trevino Gordon. MIDDEL: Mnr. Lukas Holtzhauzen (afrigter), Johan van Eeden (spanbestuurder), Simon le Roux, Clyde Lewis. AGTER: JD Strydom, Vernon Paulo, Creflo Witbooi, Henco Beukes, Hendrik Victor, Etienne Steyn.

The changing colour of the ocean Glenwood House Environment Society always thought that the colour of nature was green. Getting involved in several beach clean-ups taught us some lessons! The colour of nature is transforming as we discover kilogram upon kilogram of marine debris deposited on our beautiful local surf beach; Victoria Bay. Hundreds of thousands of plastic particles have washed up and continue to be deposited on our pristine beaches, during high tides and storm swells. Our Enviro Society set about trying to collect as much of this harmful pollution as possible during three focused, one-hour beach clean ups. We learned that over 9 million tonnes of plastic enter the world’s oceans on a yearly basis (boomerangalliance.org.au). In addition, this plastic doesn’t decompose; it is broken down into increasingly smaller pieces by the action of the sun and sea. In time, these tiny micro-plastics enter marine food chains as they are accidentally consumed by birds, sea turtles, marine mammals and fish. Fishing line, nets, bags, drinking straws and other plastic items can entangle seas creatures or be inhaled into their respiratory Glenwood House Environment Society members FRONT: Robin Mahne. systems. Over 100 million marine animals die each year due to marine debris, according to the Sea Turtle Conservancy. On our beach clean-ups, we found thousands of pieces of plastic, much of it less than 5mm in diameter. Hundreds of plastic pellets about the size of lentils were sieved from the sand. These are called nurdles and countless billion are used each year to make virtually all of the worlds’ plastic products. They wash into the ocean from shipping accidents and are deposited along reefs and beaches. We found thousands of plastic sticks from cotton ear buds, hundreds of drinking straws, tens of plastic bottle tops, toys, cigarette lighters, cigarette butts, fishing line, lures, reels and packaging in a variety of colours. As a species, our footprint on this planet is taking on a worrying rainbow hue. However, as a school society, we have decided to take action against marine plastic pollution by raising awareness on our Instagram and Facebook pages where we regularly display images of what we collect. We have committed to improving our school-wide recycling system and completely banned

We collected Coca-Cola bottle caps and donated them to Interwaste. This recycling company will donate a wheelchair to a charity of our choice for 150kg of bottle caps.

Glenwood House students collected over 7kg of plastic on three separate beach clean-ups at Victoria Bay. This is a small sample of the marine debris they found.

all plastic drinking straws from our tuck shop. We are spreading the message about reducing single use plastics and trying to live ‘greener’ waste-free lives. You can join us. What you can do: • Never leave rubbish at the beach. • Use a reusable cloth shopping bag instead of buying plastic packets at the shop. • Sip with your lips – avoid single-use plastic beverage straws in restaurants. • Avoid plastic water bottles – rather buy one durable reusable BPA-free bottle and insist on a school water font to refill it. • Refuse to buy cosmetics which contain plastic microbeads (look for polyethylene in the list of ingredients). • Recycle your plastic. • Join a beach clean-up for International Coastal Cleanup Day on 16 September. • Investigate the following hashtags: #take3forthesea #twohandsproject #banthebag #oceanguardian #thelaststraw #banthebead

Musical

Gholf

On 28 and 29 August Point High School successfully staged a musical entitled Good-bye & Hallo. The musical traces the journey of 18-year-old Paul Kruger as he tries to discover himself during a gap year of visiting the seven continents. His father, an Afrikaans-speaking engineering professor, is very much against Paul’s journey of discovery, but Paul finds himself studying at the the University of Life. He watches Madame Butterfly in Japan, he joins in a traditional dance in a street in India, he visits the Rhine River in Germany and learns about the legend of Die Lorelei, and he narrowly escapes gang violence in America. Approximately 120 learners took part in the musical as actors, singers or dancers. The musical played to full houses on both nights and participants were treated to a standing ovation on both nights. The storyline, music and dancing seemed to strike a cord with both young and old.
