AFRIKAANS MUSICAL ICON
Kurt Darren released his very first CD over 20 years ago. He is an integral part of the Afrikaans musical landscape and thanks to songs like Meisie Meisie, Voorwaarts Mars, Kaptein and more recently Laat die Dansvloer Brand, he’s a true legend. Kurt will be releasing his latest album ‘Partytjiedier’ soon and AWSUM met up with him to find out more.
We have to start by asking you about your school background. Please tell our readers a bit more about your school career. Hello AWSUM readers. I attended Lyttleton Manor High School, which is situated in Pretoria. My father was Afrikaans and my mother English, so I went to an English school. Over the weekends, we would socialise in Afrikaans. All my friends and teachers would probably say I was a ‘good-naughty’ kid. I would always play tricks on everyone but I remember that my school work would always be done on time. What kind of teenager would you say you were? I was a stress-free teenager. In those days, it was safe and easy to walk home with your friends once you’ve missed the bus. We surely did miss the bus a lot! We enjoyed loads of freedom and it was great being a teenager back then. You grew up in Pretoria – what made the area unique? Lyttleton was a normal unpretentious neighbourhood. Families would easily visit their neighbours. It was here where I discovered my love for music. You currently live in Paarl. What made you move here? We lived in the beautiful Paarl for 3 years but we recently moved back to Pretoria after we realised, we miss our people too much! What is your favourite song you’ve ever produced? My favourite song has to be ‘Onbeskryflik’, but my favourite to perform has to be ‘Kaptein’. The crowds’ reaction to this song stuns me every time. Throughout the years, I’ve been blessed by the amount of times schools use my songs for their concerts.
OON!
S COMING
You’ve worked with plenty of big local artists. Who is your dream local and international artist? There has been plenty of great local artists which I had the privilege to work with. I have worked with artists from Heuwels Fantasties, Karen

Zoid, Francois van Coke to Gian Groen. Globally, I would love to work with Ed Sheeran, Mercy Me and The Weekend! What do you still want to achieve as an artist? It would be amazing if I can produce the soundtrack to a movie. I think it would be a fantastic challenge! What inspires you? The people I surround myself with, inspire me. Being positive and forward thinking is important. Good songs, good artists and new, inspiring sounds, all influence my music. The Selfie-Song is very catchy and has close to 2 million hits on YouTube. Is it important for you to produce music which relates to both young and old? Yes, I believe so. I try and keep up to date with new trends and sounds as much as possible. It is also important for me not to ignore my regular and long-time listeners. I always try to make music which will make people feel better about themselves. Which city has the best crowds and why? No pressure here hey... Every city has its own unique ways of showing love and support. In the Eastern Cape, I usually have thousands of sing-along fans, while the Gauteng crowds are very passionate. I do love all of their support!
alone, I usually leave the playlist on shuffle and then I listen to anything from Avicii to Ed Sheeran. If you weren’t a musician, what other job would you have done? I would most definitely be a wildlife ranger. My family and I both love the outdoors and bushveld. I am an honourary game ranger thanks to SANParks. You’ve managed to lose some weight. How important is a healthy lifestyle? The weight loss happened thanks to a healthy lifestyle and the right exercise. I’m not obsessed with it, but I do think it is very important to look after your body and health. If you had to create a ‘how-toguide’ for teens who want to make a success in the music industry, what would the first three steps be? Dream big, stay committed and keep going at it! 2019 is not over yet – what is Kurt Darren planning? I will be releasing my 28th CD pretty soon and I’m incredibly excited about it. The album is called “Partytjiedier” and it features some brand-new sounds. I also have a company called SuperEvents that handles big events such as New Year’s Eve at Carnival City, Super Sokkie Cruise and Krone Cruise.
How would you like to be remembered? I would like to be remembered as the artist whose music made you feel happy and got you going. If you’ve felt bad, my music should’ve made you smile and laugh. I’ve always given 100% in everything I’ve done! What are you listening to right now in your car? Is there any song you listen to on repeat? Well, when I’m driving with my kids, they own the playlist. If I drive

PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOL (t) 021 531 7410 (e) postmaster@phs.org.za Proud of our production and concert! Two examples of excellence recently in the life of the school have been our production of the musical Grease and our annual Music Gala Concert. Grease was produced by Ms Tara Notcutt and co-directed by Ms Kristina Cassar and the Musical Director was Mrs Deirdré Chandler. The directors gave the musical a local theme: there was no attempt to Americanise the accents; clothing and images were Cape-based, and some vernacular slipped into the dialogue. The sixty or more young people embraced the production with energy and passion, and the outcome was a remarkable display of outstanding singing, dancing and acting. Many who saw it, commented on the continuation of our school’s proud tradition of excellent dramatic productions. The Annual Gala Music Concert was held at the Hugo Lamprechts Auditorium early in August. The concert is a showcase of the best of our Music Department’s offerings and this year it once again did us proud. From soloists to Jazz, Wind and String ensembles, from the Choir to the Orchestra, young people demonstrated their considerable talents and entertained a large and appreciative audience of staff, families and guests. Mrs Deirdré Chandler (Director of Music) and her team continue to produce young musicians of excellence. Both of these events have core elements which remain at the heart of what we work towards at Pinelands High School: • They provide opportunities for involvement to many young people who are willing to grasp them; • They teach young people that nothing comes without hard work and commitment; • They demonstrate to young people that those who nurture and manage them, can simultaneously love them and demand discipline; • They teach the value of collaboration and teamwork; • They allow young people to confront their insecurities and fears, and to overcome them and • They demand resilience and grit.
PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 531 3414 (e) admin@pnps.co.za PNPS Science Fair 2019 The talent at this year’s Science Fair was outstanding! Many enthusiastic budding scientists created different displays of their work, from volcanoes to homemade catapults. The competition was very close, as there were so many exciting experiments, and the judges finally decided on a tie for first place. The senior winners were Seth and Ben Peers, with a homemade sound and light engineering show, using laser lights and music, and the other senior winner was Daniel White-Philips who created a catapult. The foundation phase winner used sugar to make crystals: Nima Shanley showed us how crystals can form from a sugar solution, and then many children got to taste the crystals she had made. Well done to all those who participated!

The build up to the day was very exciting. It was wonderful for them to sell their baked goodies. They went all out to produce the goods, stalls were beautifully decorated and the items looked and tasted so good. The school is very proud of them.
Grade 4 Flying kites The Grade 4 learners of Pinelands Primary School made their own kites on the morning of 1 August 2019 and the afternoon they had a chance to fly them outside. There was a twist though, they had to do it all in Afrikaans. What a fun way to learn Afrikaans!

SUN VALLEY GROUP OF SCHOOLS (t) 021 785 2722 (e) hello@sunvalleygroup.co.za GAP Student Programme - What a success Ninteen years ago, in 2000 - our Millennium Project was to launch a Teachers’ Academy where we could train brainbased educators to teaching in line with how the brain learns. The Teaching Academy funds most of the Tuition costs for the students, to complete a BEd through UNISA, while the Director, Heather Keller - a highly experienced and competent neuro-learning expert, assigns the students to master teachers where they learn, apprentice style and how to link the pedagogy with the correct didactics. Teaching is a science and an art. It cannot only be learnt at a university, but requires hundreds of hours of contact time - like an airline pilot, to earn your “teaching wings.” Nineteen years later, with a constant demand for the few places available each year due to budgetary constraints, we are proud to say that the vast majority of our academic teaching corp are graduates of our Teaching Academy. This is the future. The photograph below is a celebration of our graduates who are currently in full-time teaching positions at our Group of Schools. A further 20 students are currently enrolled on the programme. Changing Education in South Africa (and the world) one well-trained Educator at a time.
