Handré Pollard 22-year-old rugby star Handré Pollard is the new Bulls captain and has just led the team to a 28–7 victory over Chiefs in a pre-season match. He started his senior career with the Blue Bulls as a 19-year-old. He made his Springbok debut on 28 June 2014 (against Scotland in the incoming tour series) and has 20 caps for the Springboks. He was a key contributor to South Africa’s resurgence from their shock defeat against Japan at the 2015 Rugby World Cup to reaching the semi-final against the All Blacks. He has scored 188 points in his short international career so far.
Q: Describe the experience to play against Paarl Boys’ High in the biggest Interschools match in the world. What is the exceptional relationship between the schools that makes this clash so special? A: It is always difficult to describe … it is something one cannot explain to people who were not at one of those schools. It is incredibly competitive, but very good friendships are also formed. The town (Paarl) is divided into two for that week and all academic responsibilities are pushed aside. Q: What was it like to play in a World Cup tournament? A: It was truly a dream come true! To play in a test for the Boks is already amazing, but to represent your country in the World Cup is something completely else. Even though we just came short, it was the proudest moment of my life. I hope I get such an opportunity again. Q: What is the best part of being a professional rugby player? A: The friendships and bonds that are formed. Everyone plays for different reasons. I play to provide for my family one day, yes, but also for the friendships and the feeling in the locker room after a win. Q: What is less pleasant about your career, apart from injuries? A: We can only play for a limited time and must be able to live after rugby. The number of days away from home – yes, it is wonderful to be on tour and see the world, but time with family and friends is precious. Q: You were on the sideline for quite some time with injuries. How did you keep yourself busy? A: The rehab part of an injury takes much more time than people realise. Any rugby player will tell you that it is harder to come back from injury than what it is to play. But I played a lot of golf and spent time with friends and family. Q: As the new Super Rugby captain of the Bulls, how do you regard this challenge, especially in light of your relatively young age? A: I am young, but I’ve been playing senior rugby for quite a while and have a lot of experience. I will do my best to use everything I have learned up to now and that I will still learn this year to lead my team, and also to lead by example.

Q: How have you experienced the recent matches in Australia, where you played a Super Rugby warm-up game against Chiefs and also took part in the Brisbane Global Tens? A: There were many positives and also negatives, at which we will be hard at work to fix before the Stormers game. But on the whole it was a very good tour, and it was also good for the team spirit. Q: How do you feel about your chances in the upcoming Super Rugby tournament, starting for the Bulls against the Stormers in Cape Town on 25 February? A: I believe we have a very good chance, just like all the other teams. We participate to win the competition – anything else we will regard as unsuccessful. Q: How do you handle the fame and attention that come your way as a high profile player? A: Oh, there are pros and cons. One should always remember that you were young at one time and looked up to the Boks. As long as your support system with family and friends are in place, everything else is minor. Q: What are the goals that you would like to reach in your rugby career? A: At the moment, just to be back on the field and to do my best for the Bulls and hopefully to get back into the Bok squad. I will then again look at my goals. Q: What makes your heart beat faster when you are away from the rugby field?A: My My fiancée, Marise Malherbe! Q: What are your hobbies? Other sports you enjoy playing? A: I am crazy for golf – even though I can’t play often, I enjoy it a lot.

Q: You attended Paarl Gymnasium High School. What was the experience like to be at such a prestigious high school? How did it influence your rugby career? A: It was an incredible experience. I have learned to constantly play at the highest level of South African schools rugby and to handle the pressure.
Q: What is your wish for Springbok rugby? A: My wish is for the South African public to be behind the Boks. The past twelve months were not good, but we have incredible talent in the country and can be the best in the world again.

Lemon meringue pie
I find most lemon meringue pies to be rather sickly and insipid with hardly a hint of lemon. This one has a real lemon kick with a lovely smooth curd. It is rich, though, and not for the fainthearted.

Serves 4–6 INGREDIENTS • 1 packet (200 g) Tennis biscuits • 125 ml (½ cup) melted butter grated rind and juice of 4 lemons • 1 tin (385 g) condensed milk • 3 extra-large eggs, separated • 2,5 ml (½ tsp) cream of tartar • 180 g castor sugar • 2,5 ml (½ tsp) baking powder
METHOD • Preheat the oven to 180 °C. • Crush the biscuits. I do this by bashing the biscuits into crumbs using a double plastic shopping bag, tied loosely, and a rolling pin. • In a small bowl, mix the biscuit crumbs with the melted butter. Press the mixture into a shallow pie plate. Smooth with the back of a spoon.
• In a bowl, mix together the lemon rind, lemon juice, condensed milk and egg yolks. • Pour into the crumb base. • In a clean dry bowl, beat the egg whites to a soft peak. Add the cream of tartar and beat until the peaks are very stiff. Add the castor sugar, one tablespoon at a time, beating after each addition. Beat in the baking powder once the egg whites and sugar have formed a stiff meringue. • Spoon the meringue onto the egg mixture and cover gently. Swirl the meringue into peaks with the back of the spoon. • Bake for 20 minutes. Turn the oven off but leave the pie in the oven to cool down completely. This dries the meringue slightly. • Best served chilled.

BERGVLIET PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 715 1103 (e) secretary@bps.wcape.school.za Grade 7 Camp 2017 The Grade 7 learners from Bergvliet Primary School attended a three-day camp at the Rocklands Centre in Simon’s Town from 1 to 3 February. The purpose of the camp was to expose the Grade 7 learners to the various aspects of leadership, as they are now the seniors of the school. Various activities were organised so that the learners could practise their leadership skills and teamwork. Once again the camp was a great success and the learners thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Grade 4 and 5 Adventure Day The Grade 4s and 5s had an Adventure Day at Intaka Island, Century City. They went bird watching and they learnt about alien vegetation, looking after water, and many other things. They also enjoyed playing on the steam engine just outside Intaka Island.

GROOTE SCHUUR PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 685 7295 (e) deonie@gsps.co.za Inter-house Sports Day Our annual Inter-house Sports Day took place on Friday, 3 February. It was heart warming to see all the families and past pupils who came to support their children at the school.
PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL Electroids win international robotics competition Joshua Harrod, Philip Brink and Jacob Rae – the “Electroids” – from Pinelands North Primary School have won first place in South Africa in the Wonder League Robotics Competition in the 9–12 age bracket! The boys’ achievement involved hours of coding and testing, as well as filming their results and uploading their code and film to the judges. Of the more than 5 000 teams from 52 countries that entered the competition, only 33% completed all the challenges and made it to the end. Building on this success, PNPS plans to offer a Wonder League coding club as an extracurricular activity this year.
Red Roots Pre-School Red Roots, an independent preprimary school based alongside Pinelands North Primary, opened their doors to two classes of 20 children on 11 January 2017. Although they are following the CAPS curriculum, they are using the Reggio Emilio methods of learning, to create excitement and enthusiasm for learning. Visit the school on their School in Action Day on 8 March to watch this process in action!
THE PINELANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL Interhouse Athletics Day On 24 January 2017 The Pinelands Primary School had its annual Interhouse Athletics Day. The school pupils were divided into three houses: Derham, Ross, and Wells. The Athletics Day comprised of various different races in which learners from Grade R to Grade 7 participated. The pupils were excited despite the fact that it started raining. Due to heavy rain the relay races had to be suspended. The U/10 girls 80m record was broken by Amy Pharaoh. Well done to all the athletes for taking part as well as the cheerleaders.

GROOTE SCHUUR HIGH SCHOOL (t) 021 674 2165 (e) sysop@gshs.co.za Groote Schuur Athletics: Heart and sole This year’s Interhouse athletics competition not only showcased learners’ physical effort in track and field, but was also an opportunity to create awareness for Cancer. On 3 and 4 February all four houses (Carshalton, Inversnaid,Nassau, Vredenhof) were seen competing for glory. There was mass participation in a number of events, with large groups of Grade 12s (cheerleaders included) in the 800m and 1500m events. At the same time learners and teachers had the opportunity to show their support for cancer awareness by having their hair shaved. Later this month, on 25 February, the school will be showing its support at the CANSA Shave-a-thon at the V&A Waterfront.
