We need to start by asking about your school career. Tell our readers more about your school career. Where were you at school and what would you always remember about school? I grew up in Bellville. I was in Bellpark Primary School and Bellville High School. I have good memories of school. I did a lot of diverse things and hung out with unique people. What type of teenager were you? I was wild at the start of high school, but pretty exemplary afterwards. I performed reasonably well, had many outdoor activities, played rugby and played in bands. Sometimes I was in trouble, but nothing too bad. The punks thought I was a jock and the jocks thought I was a punk. You grew up in a Christian home, how would you describe your relationship with your parents at high school and how is your relationship with your parents now that you’ve become a parent? My relationship with my parents has gone through ups and downs. At school, our relationship was pretty good, because I was an easy teenager to live with. My rebellion only started after school. I was 19 when I started to follow my own head and 23 when we started with F*kofpolisiekar. The name and the lyrics came as a big shock to my parents, and it gave our relationship a knock at that time. So, I think my parents understood me better. Now I appreciate my parents more because it is difficult to raise children and I understand it for the first time. My parents also help us a lot with my daughter, because my life is busy and help is needed. What will your teachers tell about you? They would say I was a good rugby player and a leader. What will you always remember about school you’d rather forget? Geography. It was a period that I found intolerable. The teacher had no passion for the subject, and I could pass without being in class. You are now a family man, how do you balance your career, marriage and fatherhood? I try my best to spend quality time with my family. They are my passion, hobby and favourite pastime. Every moment I’m not on the road, stage or TV, I’m trying to spend with my family.

You and your wife, Lauren, have been married for seven years, how did you made her fall in love with you? Wow, I can’t believe she fell for me. I was a crazy guy when she fell in love with me, but I believe she saw something in me. I was just myself, without making excuses for it.

Francois Van Coke, the lead singer of the legendary rock groups F*kofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel is well known in South Africa. In 2015 Francois made a massive impact with his gripping song ‘Toe Vind Ek Jou’ with Karen Zoid. This song also received numerous GHOEMA awards in 2016. He also has his own TV program on kykNET, Die Van Coke Show and he is also one of the coaches on M-Net’s popular talent search program The Voice Season 3. Currently, Francois is busy to arrange his spectacular rock and roll concert, Francois van Coke en Vriende. AWSUM asked this legend rocker a few questions.

What is your favourite song you released? There are a few. “Toe vind ek jou” from my solo career and “Hemel op die platteland” and “Komma” from F*kofpolisiekar. Anything you still want to achieve as a musician? Yes! I still want to make a lot of music that touches people. I want to throw even bigger shows and parties and show people a good time! How was it to go solo after all these years together as a band? It’s not that different, because I’m still playing with a band as a solo artist. One thing is different; my name is on the album cover. It’s something to get used to. All praise and all criticism come to me. This is quite an adaptation. What province has the best audience? Gauteng! How would you always like to be remembered? I want to be remembered as a dude that makes people feel better. What are you listening to in your car? Any song playing on repeat? Yes, I’m listening to the new Foals album and Jason Isbell’s “If we were vampires” playing on repeat. If you have to write a “how-to guide” for teenagers who want to make a success in the music industry, what will be the first three steps? 1. Practice every day. 2. Play with people you like. 3. Don’t do it for the money. You’ve made a big name in the music industry and have won numerous awards, what’s next for you? I’m working on my 3rd solo album. The best part of being a musician is writing new songs. So, I enjoy it a lot and work hard on it. I’m also doing two big shows. Francois van Coke & Vriende on May 3rd at Grand West in Cape Town and the date for Pretoria to be announced. Tickets available at Computicket.

Masala Tomato Stew Serves 4 • Preparation: 10 minutes • Cooking: 1½ hours

Tomato stew will always be a popular dish for South Africans. We’ve added roasted masala as a twist to this recipe; use stewing meat on the bone to ensure optimum heartiness.

Ingredients

• 750 g stewing beef (with bone) salt and freshly ground black pepper 30 ml (2 T) olive oil • 4 garlic cloves, chopped • 2 onions, sliced • 5 ml (1 t) chilli flakes • 15–30 ml (1–2 T) roasted masala 100 g tomato paste • 250 ml (1 c) beef stock • 750 ml (3 c) water • 1 tin (410 g) whole tomatoes • 30 ml (2 T) brown sugar • 15 ml (1 T) lemon juice

Method

1 Season the meat with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a large pot and fry the meat in batches until golden brown. Remove and set aside. 2 Fry the garlic and onions until caramelised. Add the chilli flakes and masala and stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the tomato paste and mix through well. 3 Return the meat to the pot and pour over the stock. Add the water and bring to the boil. Simmer until the meat is tender (about 1 hour, depending on the meat). Add more water if necessary. 4 Add the tomatoes, sugar and lemon juice and simmer for another 15 minutes. Season with more salt and pepper if needed. 5 TO SERVE Serve with fresh oregano, ciabatta and baby tomatoes.

A mouth-watering selection of Esther’s best recipes from her popular Take five food column in YOU and Drum magazines. The recipes range from delicious ideas for breakfast, quiches & pies, braai, chicken, street food to quick and healthy salads and, don’t forget the puddings and baked goodies.

WESTERFORD HIGH SCHOOL (t) 021 689 9154 (e) admin@westerford.co.za Cyclathon 2019 There are at least two major annual events that every respectable cyclist plans to attend - Habitat for Humanity’s Cyclathon and the (lesser known) Cape Town Cycle Tour. Habitat for Humanity is an international NPO that works to address the homelessness crisis in South Africa and across the globe. With an estimated 200 000 South Africans currently living on the streets, it is clear that a lack of adequate housing is one of the most pressing issues facing our society today. Each year the Habitat sub-committees at SACS, Rondebosch, Bishops, Wynberg, Herschel, Springfield and Westerford combine their resources to coordinate the 25-hour fundraising spectacular that is Cyclathon. From 4pm on Friday to 5pm on Saturday spectators can buy ten-minute cycling slots on stationary bicycles, with all of the money going directly to charity. In addition to this, there are a number of exciting raffle tickets and spot prizes on offer including hotel stays and some of the latest technological gadgets. Beyond raising money for Habitat, the Cyclathon stage plays host to a number of extraordinarily talented artists. This year, local favourites like Richard Stirton and Blokhouse together with young up-and-comers (Lauren Heiberg, Ameer Hendricks, Alex Muller and others) provided a dynamic mix of performances, keeping the crowd energised and excited throughout the night. While turning out in formidable numbers to support this worthy cause has become something of a Westerford tradition, there are certain people who go above and beyond. Special recognition must go to Ray Chaplin and Quintin Combrink who were stuck fast to their saddles for the full 25 hours. Additionally, our very own Ms Hendrickz braved the late-night chill to supervise our Westerfordians, staying through the night well into Saturday morning. And of course, none of this would have been possible without the tremendous work of our Habitat committee (dutifully assisted by Ms Frankish). Cyclathon is a regular calendar highlight enjoyed by pupils and parents alike. Organising an event of this magnitude is no small task and we are grateful to all of the committee members, sponsors, supporters and teachers who dedicated their time to ensure that everything went off without a hitch. Although figures have yet to be released, the current estimate stands at roughly R50 000 raised for Habitat for Humanity. This money will surely go a long way to supplement the meaningful work done by this organisation year-round. - Nadia Odendaal, 12

Library Week 2019

Well done to the first team boys for coming 3rd in the Cape Town Metro Top Schools Tournament. Thanks to Settlers High School for hosting.

Bergvliet Primary is celebrating Library Week with the theme “Collaborate”. Grade 1’s and their parents joined us for a reading session in the Library before school and we had Collaborative games at second break, which was great fun for all involved. Every grade (older class and younger) across the school linked with another to share books together. This was a magical experience where every learner connected with another to enjoy a story or two. We visited Yeshua Primary to collaborate around reading and books. Books were also donated to the school. A huge BPS thank you to Mrs Junor & Mrs Whyte for organizing Library week and to all who ensured that we continue to encourage a love for reading.

Hockey Our 1st Team Hockey Boys recently won all their games at the Milnerton High School Festival.

PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 531 3414 (e) admin@pnps.co.za Red-a-Fair Pinelands North Primary School (PNPS) parents and pupils once again showed their community spirit by pulling off another successful Red-a-Fair. Not only do all parents, teachers and pupils work together to plan and manage the fundraising event, but the communities of Pinelands and surrounds enjoy a day filled with food, festivities and loads of fun. Every second year, the Red-a-Fair boasts with rides, games, tasty treats, craft stalls and great entertainment, that the planning team put in tireless months of planning for. Each event draws crowds who are seldom disappointed and always on a high when the day draws to a close. Fair convenor, Jacqui Tooke, explains with a smile, “It is always humbling to see everyone from our school work together and pull off such a big, enjoyable day. Even our principal, Ann Morton, can be seen either getting a henna tattoo from one of our external vendors, being an excellent sport in the Dunk-The-Teacher challenge, or walking around with a recycling bag making sure all waste is properly recycled”. Besides fueling lasting memories for the school community, the fair is a green event with active recycling, reduction of single-use plastics and a move towards biodegradable packaging. PNPS would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Pinelands community for their support. Funds raised will go towards replacing the school’s Art Room.

Inter-house Swimming Gala

Proud of Hlumelo

We had a lovely afternoon filled with thrilling swimming and excited cheering! Congratulations to Barkly House (yellow) for winning this year’s event. Huge thanks to all involved and to our parents for coming out to support our slick swimmers!

Our Super TRUper for the month was awarded to Hlumelo Siswana for displaying outstanding manners towards his peers and staff.

Canine Collector Isabella Esterhuizen in Grade 4 initiated a collection of pet food for the animals in the disasterhit Overberg region. The ladies from Kleinmond Animal Welfare Society (KAWS), accompanied by delightful doggy, Julia, came to fetch the much-needed and very generous donation. Thank you to Isabella for taking the initiative and to the ever-generous Greenfield community for their kindness and empathy!

Leaders for 2019 academic year Congratulations to Farhah Jacobs and Hlumelo Siswana who have been appointed as Head Girl and Head Boy respectively, for the 2019 academic year. Hannah Miller and Mika’el Mitchell has been appointed as Deputy Head Girl and Deputy Head Boy.

GROOTE SCHUUR PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 685 7295 (e) deonie@gsps.co.za U13 rugby and netball tour Our U13 rugby and netball team went on tour to Porterville. Both teams trained extremely well leading up to this tour. The Friday morning they played 4 games each. With some good results from the netball and good experience for the rugby teams. This was a great preseason festival for the coming season. We would like to thank the following staff and coaches that gave up of their time to accompany the players: Mr Wagner, Mr Claassen, Mrs Solomons, Ms Butler, Coach Deone, Coach Zilke and Coach Jason.
