Food extraordinaire | Entrepreneur | Author
A pioneer in her field, Siba Mtongana has put Africa on the map in the world of culinary stardom. This international multi award-winning culinary expert, author and entrepreneur has built a global influence reaching over 130 countries. Siba has brought the art of food to millions of homes around the world with her cooking show Siba’s Table on Food Network. She is also a recipient of the prestigious Ubuntu Awards 2018 from the South African government for her contribution of being a pioneering global ambassador of the country in her field. Feeding not just bodies, but spirits and souls, Siba is a woman of influence who has levelled up South Africa’s food and entertainment industry. While Siba is the first African to win a Prestige Award for the impact of her cookbook My Table, in South Africa published by The Siba Co, she is also the Global Ambassador of the international organisation, Rise Against Hunger, taking transformative steps to feed the hungry globally with love. AWSUM asked her a few questions: We have to start off by asking about your school career, where did you matriculate? I matriculated high school from Alphendale High School in the Eastern Cape. What did you like about school? I loved maths, science and accountancy in school, and I did really well in each of them, my mom actually thought I would grow up to be an accountant or lawyer, sorry mom! I have also always had a very curious mind, and school was the perfect place to satisfy my curiosity. What did you dislike about school? While it is most certainly more common in the schooling system nowadays, I felt and still feel that the system is far too standardised and based on old principals. Many children with diverse skill sets are not given the opportunity to explore their talents at a young age and to develop the skills which they most likely choose to use in their careers later in life. I wish that I had been apart of a more progressive and forward-thinking schooling system, I have seen hints of it in my children’s schooling, so while we are not there just yet we are moving closer. I also did not have much career guidance at school which made it very difficult to choose subjects which would form the foundation for my future career. My advice to students who do not have access to career guidance is to consult family members, and do not be afraid to reach out to people you respect and are doing well in the industry you see yourself in. What would your teachers say about you? I was the eager beaver in class, that girl sitting in the front with her hand up ready to ask the teacher a question. I hope my teachers would describe me as hardworking, intelligent and curious. Please tell us about your childhood and family? I was blessed with the most wonderful childhood. I grew up in East London, in a Christian home which was filled to the brim, with eight siblings, two parents and a whole lot of love. My mother was a teacher and my father was a supervisor in leather goods manufacturing company. I came from a traditional family of hard workers and from an environment where anything was seen as being possible if you worked hard enough for it. When and how did your love for food developed? From a very young age, my mom taught me to have a deep appreciation for good quality produce, which more often than not came from her garden. We would help mama in the kitchen, by foraging for beautiful produce and prepping the ingredients for her. It took a few short years until my cooking skills were trusted, and evening meals become my responsibility. I have my mom to thank for being such a great, patient teacher and for encouraging us to explore and be creative. We never used to cook from a cookbook, it came from the soul. The passion was there, all I needed to do was harness the skill set and knowledge through formal education. I enrolled at CPUT, and obtained my Degree in Food and Consumer Sciences, Majoring in Food Science and Nutrition. My studies are really the foundation of my success and I strongly advise students to look at furthering your education, as I have done.

AWSUM NEWS NOVEMBER 2018
Rondebosch Boys, St Joseph’s Marist College, South African College High School, Westerford. AWSUM News is published by the TieMedia Group, Jock de Villiers Office Building, 376 Main Road, Paarl, 7646. 021 000 1705 | www.awsum.co.za
You are a mother of four beautiful children, what is your recipe for managing your career, husband and children? It isn’t easy, I’ll tell you that. I have learnt to put strong support systems in place, be it an extra nanny or au pair at home, or trusted employees in the office. My sisters and my church family are so important to me, they definitely create a sense of harmony and spiritual grounding in my life. Then I have my husband, Brian, who is my greatest support system, both physically and emotionally. My message here is that it comes down to deciding that you want to succeed in each respective area of your life, being 100% unapologetic, and finding ways to make it work, gone are the days of us woman having just one job, and I am so happy about that. What’s your easy quick go-to meal you always make your family? I am a big fan of pan sheet dinners and leftovers for lunch. I love the idea of throwing gorgeous ingredients together in one pan sheet, it caters well for mass, its fuss-free and the clean-up is always simple. My cookbook is a great place to find these Sibalicious recipes, which you can easily find at Woolworths and Exclusive Books. What do you see as success? Success in my mind is having a very clear vision of where you want to go, combined with a rock-solid plan on how to get there, and then pushing as hard as you can to get there. The most successful people in life are not the ones who got there the first time but rather the individuals that got up time and time again and refused to accept defeat. Success to me is not being willing to accept defeat and it’s seeing that bit of progress every single day no matter how big or small. That being said, no plan will take its course unless we believe in ourselves, my message to students is to crush that self-doubt, remove the negativity from your mind and know that you are capable of so much more than you even believe. Any advice you can give to our AWSUM fans in school that want to follow a food career? Build a solid base through your education. My Passion is a great driver, but you need to back it with a core skill set and knowledge. Put yourself in the best possible position to find the job you want, furthering your education is the best way to do this! This industry is not for the weak or for those who are seeking fame, the hours are long, the output is intense, and the environment is highly competitive. If you don’t have a thick skin or aren’t ready to develop one, this industry is not for you. Do lots of research before you commit to something so that once you are in the game, you can give it your all. This is a wonderful industry to be in now a days, and we have so many options available to us, BUT the work needs to be done, long before the rewards are seen! What is your vision for 2019? I am so excited for 2019, it’s going to be a big year for me personally and for my business, The Siba Co. We have been working quietly in the background and will see these boundary-breaking projects come to life in the new year. I hope to continue to work on creating harmony and good balance in each aspect of my life, and to thrive in each. I hope my first Cookbook continues to fly off of shelves, I am hoping to treat fans to some exciting new content, be it on screens, on social media or in print, I have also been inundated with request for merchandise ranges, another book and so much more… all I can say for now is that I am listening! I can’t wait to share more with you….

Remove from heat and cover with the lid or foil, resting the chicken for at least 5 minutes. 4. To assemble, pile the cooked fillets onto a piece of wax paper in the centre of a large board and cut into strips. Arrange everything else around the chicken, some in piles directly on the board and some in small bowls.

GROOTE SCHUUR PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 685 7295 (e) deonie@gsps.co.za Soccer Day On Saturday 10 November we hosted our annual soccer day. We had the draw to see what grade is what country and each grade sells food according to their country. On the day we had a variety of foods on sale from Boerewors rolls, bunny chows to pancakes and scones with cream. On Thursday 8 November we had our Soccer day Brag, we were very lucky to have some of Cape Town City players come talk and motivate our pupils and get them excited for the event on Saturday. A special thanks to the following players that came out, Peter Leeuwenburgh, Kwanda Mngonyama, Allen Kateregga, Keanu Cupido and Shukri Jones for putting this together. On Saturday the weather was perfect, all our pupils took part making up their own teams for the day. They had loads of fun and the winning teams received free tickets to go watch Cape Town City on Sunday against Black Leopards. A very special thank you to all our amazing parents that made the day possible by getting all the amazing food ready. Huge thank you to all the GSPS staff that made it happen, without the staff the day could not have been possible.

RONDEBOSCH BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL Upgraded Prep School Library The Prep School Library has undergone much needed renovation and enlarging, making it a more spacious and comfortable reading, research and teaching room. Two informal seating areas have been included where boys can relax and read, or be read to. Five computer workstations, with state of the art large touch screens, are now available for the boys to use for research and projects, in addition to the computer facilities elsewhere in the Prep School. The improved, modern lighting, new reception counter, upgraded floors and carpeting will ensure that the library remains a central, well used and popular facility with in the Prep School. The major portion of the project was funded by the Carleton Lloyd Educational Trust and the computers were donated by former Old Boys’ Union Chairman Dennis Nick (E1950). Dennis Nick and Stephen Duffett (E1975 & former Old Boys’ Union Chairman), on behalf of the Trust, formally opened the renovated library on Tuesday evening.

Remembrance Day Services The Prep and High Schools held their annual Remembrance Day Services. The service in the Memorial Hall commenced with the laying of wreaths by the OBU Chairman Adrian Dommisse, Head Prefect Lehan Botha, representatives of the staff, parents and other grades. Reflecting the diversity of religion at Rondebosch there were readings by boys from the Hindu, Christian, Islamic and Jewish faiths, and prayers in English and isiXhosa. The Roll of Honour was read by the Headmaster and the Last Post & Reveille were played by David Frost (grade 10) on trumpet. At least two Old Boys who attended the service this morning were also at the first Remembrance Day Service held in the Memorial Hall after it was opened in 1951 – Jim Pettit (E1953) and Robert Blythe (E1954).
PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 531 3414 (e) admin@pnps.co.za
Pinelands North Primary Awards Being an inclusive school, Pinelands North celebrates the success of every child all year! One of the ways we do so besides our Teacher Pleaser Awards, merit trophies and Caught in the Act, is to give every child a personalized certificate at the end of each year. These certificates focus on values and academic attainment. Our senior Awards’ ceremony was held on Tuesday 6 November at Old Mutual and the junior Awards on Friday 9 November at school, and both included much pupil participation - from music items to poetry recitals and public speaking. Some of the comments from parents afterwards included: I love that every child gets celebrated so personally! The Irish Blessing song makes me cry every year. I can’t believe the confidence of the children giving the reports – I would never have had the confidence to speak in front of a thousand people when I was twelve!

WESTERFORD HIGH SCHOOL (t) 021 689 9154 (e) admin@westerford.co.za
Bergvliet Primary U13 Sixa-side Cricket Big Bash The 2nd November saw Bergvliet Primary School’s first edition of a six a side cricket tournament. The host school as well as Sun Valley Primary and Muizenberg Junior School took to the field to battle for the crown. Before we started the days proceedings the boys were treated to a visit from former South African batsman and the current World Sports Betting Cape Cobras Coach Ashwell Prince. This saw them then kick into high gear as the boys were overwhelmed... being in his presence. Bergvliet took to the field to play against Muizenberg Junior in the first match and so the day progressed with each team playing each other twice which led to the final with Bergvliet and Sun Valley facing off in what was a battle to be remembered. Great batting by Matthew Miller (Bergvliet) and his team to try and chase down a relatively big total, but Sun Valley brought back the fight and bowled really well to seal their victory in the last over. Matthew Miller walked away with the most sixes award for what was a batting display which dubbed him the nickname Miller Time.
All three teams Sun Valley in Red, Muizenberg in Blue and Bergvliet in Orange. Ashwell in the centre, the umpires on either side.

This learner is a proud flagbearer and brand carrier of the Groote Schuur name and brand. This year’s recipients, Liam Erasmus, Lisa McLean and Christopher Williamson, rendered quality and exemplary service to the school for the past five years.
