Festival of the Arts
Knysna soccer tour
A Festival of the Arts was held on Monday 20 August at Bergvliet Primary School. The evening consisted of a varied programme of poetry, creative writing, dance, instrumental solos, orchestras and choirs.
Pinelands North Primary School U13 Soccer team recently participated in the annual Backward Point Knysna Soccer Festival played at the Rheenendal fields outside of Knysna. Five matches were played on the Friday and the team performed well losing only one match displaying great team spirit and comradery. They ate dinner at the waterfront that evening, mingling with the other teams from the festival. On the Saturday they played another five matches and continued to play well, losing one match.
Mandela day On Mandela Day this year, PNPS reached out to Mokone Primary. We invited the Gr R – Gr 3 pupils to join us for a day filled with creative tasks, sporty games, indoor games, construction games, dancing and getting to know each other better. Lunch was provided for pupils and staff at first break. The Nedbank Team joined in the different activities on the day. The senior choir visited the senior citizens of Kensington Old Age Home, sang to them and delivered care packs and hand-made cards from our Gr 4s. The Gr 5s and some PNPS’ volunteers spent the whole day knitting squares for blankets, which will be donated later this year. Some of our staff went to visit the children at Red Cross Hospital and donated toys, colouring books and treats. We’d like to thank our sponsors for the day: Nedbank, ElJosa Travel and Tours and Pinelands Rotary.

Creative Expression Excellence On the 15th of August, Yanga Gcasamba was honoured with an award for excellence in art. As the only winner from EMDC Central, Yanga proudly represented GSHS and our district. Yanga is an art learner at Peter Clarke Art Centre, and enjoys developing his love for art and visual expression. The GSHS dance society also shone brightly in August. First they staged a stunning performance at Artscape on 16 August. The very next day they departed to participate in the Montague Youth Arts Festival. Their hard work paid off and they raked in three gold and two silver medals at the festival. Under the leadership and tutelage of Mr Mzonke Godongwana, the GSHS dance society is reaching higher heights.

Rustenburg Junior Staff Sleep Out Funds raised from sponsorship for our Staff Nelson Mandela School Sleep Out were used to purchase a huge number of toiletries including over 300 sanitary pads, deodorant, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, face cloths, and wet wipes. These were packed and delivered to John Pama Primary School in Nyanga. As we are celebrating Women’s Month, the lack of sanitary items for young ladies has been highlighted. The staff were delighted to receive these toiletries, and were especially grateful to be able to provide the young learners with these necessary items.

1. It’s your final game of the year, how has the season been so far? I think it’s fair to say that the season has been a disappointment from a results point of view but despite this I have much love and respect for my players. They are great guys, respectful, loyal and hardworking. I have seen the vast majority of these boys develop into quality young men. Rugby at school is part of the educational process. It’s not only about winning. These boys can walk out of SACS with their heads held high. 2. What does this fixture mean for your team or school in terms of your 2018 season? This fixture against Wynberg is always the last one of the season. It means a great deal especially for the Gr12 boys. It’s the last time they will represent their school in a 1st XV jersey. It’s a special occasion. 3. What challenges are you currently facing? Other than the obvious disappointment of not quite ending on the right side of the scoreboard in our last two fixtures, we aren’t really facing any challenges other than our opponent on Saturday. Despite two close loses, the team remains happy, enthusiastic and positive that they can do well on Saturday. 4. Who do you consider as your biggest opponents? Any team in the WP Premier League. 5. Please name a few players that have been standout players for your school? I always prefer to focus on the team rather than the individual so singling out players would not be fair. Page 14

The Rondebosch-Rustenburg collaborative production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is being directed by the duo Mr Adrian Skelly (Head of the Arts Faculty, Rustenburg Girls’) and Ms Carey Hickson-Mahony (Principal of the Cape Academy of Dramatic Art). The directors have worked together since 2011 and, for three consecutive years, produced award-winning shows at the National Schools Festival. Besides the obvious rehearsal process in the evenings and over weekends, the show also involves set design and set construction, scene painting, costume design, lighting design, professional make-up and styling, and live music. Ms Janet Pienaar, of Rustenburg Girls’ Junior School, has created an original score for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” which will be played by musicians from both RGHS and RBHS. Over 5000 fabric flowers have been made for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and will be suspended from the rafters of the stage in the Memorial Hall of Rondebosch Boys’ High School. Proudly Sponsored by Standard Bank
