Jean de Villiers was South Africa’s 54th Springbok captain and an important leader for South African Rugby. In 2014 Jean became the 5th player to reach 100 Test caps for the Springboks and was named the SA Rugby player of the year twice (2008 and 2013). He retired from rugby in 2016 and left behind a phenomenal legacy. The former Springbok captain is still involved in rugby as a SuperSport analyst. AWSUM caught up with him to ask a few questions.
You attended Paarl Gymnasium High School. How did it influence your rugby career? I grew up in a house where rugby always been relevant. Since I was a boy I wanted to go play rugby and Paarl Gim exposed me to rugby. The fact that I could have played on such a big platform like interschools between Paarl Gim and Paarl Boys’ High it prepared me for bigger platforms as a professional rugby player. Everything had a huge impact on my rugby, especially the coaching I received from a young age. Describe the experience to play against Paarl Boys’ High in the biggest Interschools match in the world. I think every year everything builds up to interschools and the fact that it is important. I always had a great pride to play in an interschools match and to play a great game. I was privileged enough to only lost one game against Paarl Boys’ High in my whole school career. And that is definitely something I am proud of. Tell us a bit about your family and upbringing? My dad also played for WP rugby and at my house, a lot of rugby people came to visit. I really can’t think of a time in my life where rugby wasn’t present. I was privileged to play first team for Paarl Gim, Cravenweek and SA 19’s with my brother in the same year. My mom is also very active, she was a teacher at La Rochelle High school which mean we spend a lot of time on La Rochelle’s sports fields. My whole family is sports enthusiasts. When did you decide to become a professional rugby player? I don’t think it is really a decision you make, it’s more like a privilege you receive in a moment in your life and the passion to play need to be there. I always hoped to play for South Africa before rugby became a professional sport. I was privileged to receive a contract from WP rugby in my matric year. Basically, I was a professional rugby player for the last few months of my matric year. What was it like to play in the World Cup tournament? I am so privileged to been chosen for four World Cups. Unfortunately, World Cups turned out a bit sad for me due to injuries. The World Cup is the biggest platform a player can participate in. To lead the Springboks in 2015 was a big highlight for me and to be part of the 2007 team who won the World Cup, that is something, not a lot of people experienced. What was less pleasant about your rugby career, apart from injuries? I think injuries are the main thing and then missing out on your families life. Especially not to be there for the milestones in your children’s lives, and that I did not finish my university degree.

AWSUM NEWS JULY 2018
How did you handle the fame and attention that came your way as a high profile player? It is difficult, the important thing is to never see yourself as someone important or more important than somebody else and always handle people with respect. In my case, the fame started slowly and then it got bigger and bigger, and with that, you grew as a person as well. I don’t think a person is defined according to who and what the are, but rather how they treat people with respect. Always treat people with respect and hopefully you will receive it back. Tell us a bit about your life after rugby and working on TV? Supersport is a great way to still be part of rugby without the pressure. I really enjoy it. Rugby is absolutely my passion, but I made the decision to do something else. I am working full time for Citadel Wealth Management and Supersport is only something I do on the side. The reality is your rugby career will finish and you still have a very long life left after rugby. I was privileged enough to receive an opportunity to build a new career. What other sports do you enjoy playing? I swam provincially from the age of 7 to 16. I was captain of the first cricket team. I tried everything but I prefer the team sports and rugby heve been the one that always stood out. What is your wish for Springbok rugby? That the Springboks will be number one again, isn’t everyone’s dream to be number one. And that the people will be proud of SA rugby. Sometimes people are very negative about rugby. I think we take rugby too seriously. What was the highlight of your career thus far? Definitely reaching 100 tests, that is very special. My 101 test was at Nuweland, where I learned to play rugby. I walked out on the field with my two daughters. We played against Australia and I scored two tries and won the game. My wife was there, pregnant with our boy and my parents, my brother and friends were also there. It was a combination of everything I love together on one day. What are your future career dreams? What is the one thing you would really like to achieve? To be successful in my life after rugby. To be a good father and husband to my wife, and then to make a difference in peoples’ lives. I think the responsibility lay with every South African to make SA a better place.

Pizza
Kapplank Groentemessie, vurk Knoffeldrukker Kastrol Blikoopmaker Meetlepels Meetkoppies Houtlepel Skeplepel Koekroller 2 bakplate Vatlappies Slaplemmes, houtbord Pizzawieletjie of skerp mes
Wat is nodig?
15 ml margarien of botter 1 ui, gekap 1 knoffelhuisie, gekneus 1 blik (400 g) gekapte tamaties 3 ml origanum 2 ml sout 1 knippie peper 250 g witbrooddeeg of 2 gekoopte pizzabasisse 250 ml gerasperde mozzarellakaas 125 ml gekapte ham of koue vleis 250 ml pynappelstukkies

BERGVLIET PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 715 1103 (e) secretary@bergvlietprimary.co.za Mandela Day To celebrate Mandela Day this year, each grade at Bergvliet Primary School selected a charity to support. These varied from organisations dealing with underprivileged children, charities caring for animals, the disabled and under-resourced libraries. The charities were approached and a wish list was obtained. Over the holidays the learners collected the required goods, some did chores to raise money to buy what was needed. The educators were most impressed at the wonderful response. They too joined in the Madiba spirit by donating clothes to a worthwhile cause. In the second week of term the learners built a Wall of Hope in the hall, using the goods collected. On the Friday a special Mandela Day assembly was held with each grade explaining what they had done. The goods will now be distributed to the participating charities.

From Shanghai to Cape Town: We all speak music On 6 July 2018, 48 students and 4 teachers from Kongjiang Senior High School in Shanghai connected with Groote Schuur High School in Cape Town. The aim was to establish an agreement of friendship between our schools, which was signed by both schools’ principals. Learners connected through music, dance and crafts, and our new friendship started on a good note.
The Kongjiang marching band delivered award-winning performances, while the GSHS jazz band, Khanya cultural society and the dancers brought Capetonian flavour to the evening. We are looking forward to strengthening the partnership when GSHS visits Kongjiang next year.

Mandela Day Mrs Meredith and Mr Jacobs handed over all the donations from our RUSTYBUG 67 MINUTES FOR MANDELA to the Salesians for the street children who live in Town. The next stop was to an informal settlement in Grassy Park. Without the generosity of our RGJS families, this would not have been possible, thank you!

RONDEBOSCH BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL Transkei outreach July 2018 During the recent July holidays the Transkei Outreach Group enjoyed another very successful trip to Isolomzi Secondary School in the Eastern Cape. The volunteers consisted of pupils from Rondebosch Boys’ High, Rustenburg Girls’ High, Springfield Girls’ Convent and Rhenish Girls’ High, along with organisers, Rowan Harmuth, Marion Wasdell and Chantal Rens. The aim of the outreach is to ensure that matric learners of Isolomzi Secondary School are well prepared for their final Grade 12 exams. The school has experienced a drastic rise in its overall matric pass rate from 40% in 2012 to 100% in 2017. This bears testimony to the impact the outreach programme has on the community and its youth. The Transkei Outreach programme was nominated for a Lead SA Award and was announced Western Cape winner for July 2018. Read the full article on www.awsumnews.co.za
