JEAN DE VILLIERS

Interschools is taking place this Saturday, what is the funniest thing you can remember about your last one? Interschools on that day is very serious. I can’t think of anything funny that happened on or off the field. Why do you think this is the biggest interschools in the world? I think the fact that it’s been played for over a 100 years between two top Paarl schools makes it very special. All the history and tradition on the day ensures that it attracts thousands of people. What is the most important life lesson you’ve learnt at Paarl Gymnasium? I do believe my school placed a lot of emphasis on having respect for all. When it comes to sport, Gim taught me how win and get up after a loss. What would you love to relive; 19A interschools or a Super Rugby match vs the Bulls? As a schoolboy, interschools is incredibly special. I would definitely like to relive the game against Boishaai once more. If you did not play in your preferred position, what other position would you have preferred? I would’ve liked to play flyhalf. You can control the game and you always have loads of options when the ball arrives. A pity I could never really kick a ball! 2019 is a Rugby World Cup year. Realistically, what would you say are our chances to reach the semi’s or final? I feel we have a very good chance. We’ll definitely reach the quarters and the semi’s should not be a problem. Once again, it will be a highly competitive world cup. You were the Springbok captain – what is the most valuable thing you learn while being captain? You must realize the gravity of the situation and you should always act as a true ambassador for South Africa. You do have plenty of responsibilities, but it makes you realize that you’ll never be ‘bigger’ than the jersey nor the sport. With Rassie Erasmus stepping in as coach, what is the biggest improvements since he’s taken over? Well, we’ve managed to beat New Zealand in their own backyard. I feel there’s a lot more belief amongst the team – that is a very important aspect within a team! Quickfire questions: Choose one • A jam-packed Newlands OR a jam-packed Faure Street stadium? Newlands. • The winning try during interschools OR a try scored for the Stormers? Winning try during Interschools. • Running over an opponent OR slicing through a gap? Slicing through a gap.

Interschools is taking place this Saturday, what is the funniest thing you can remember about your last one? With interschools everything is rather serious and very little is funny on the day. I do however remember that on the day of the big game one of the dad’s present told me that if we don’t win, he’ll run me over with his car. Luckily, we managed to win, and I could see the funny side of it later on. Why do you think this is the biggest interschools in the world? Both schools are older than 150 years and when you look at the stats the matches are always tight. The competition is fierce, and you never really know who is going to win. What is the most important life lesson you’ve learnt at Boys’ High? To always remain humble. What would you love to relive; 19A interschools or a Super Rugby match vs the Bulls? Definitely interschools. You play alongside 15 of your very best mates and the pressure is less than Super Rugby. If you did not play in your preferred position, what other position would you have preferred? I would’ve preferred to play center because it would’ve been nice to try and tackle Jean de Villiers. 2019 is a Rugby World Cup year. Realistically, what would you say are our chances to reach the semi’s or final? I think we have a very good chance. If we finish second in our group, we only have to beat Ireland to reach the semi’s. You were the Springbok captain – what is the most valuable thing you learn while being captain? You as an individual will never be bigger than the Springbok logo on your chest. You must always leave the Springboks in a better position that what your predecessors did. With Rassie Erasmus stepping in as coach, what is the biggest improvements since he’s taken over? The focus on the smaller details. Rassie is superior when it comes to focusing on the small things and he makes sure there is a positive team environment. Quickfire questions: Choose one • A jam-packed Newlands OR a jam-packed Faure Street stadium? Newlands. • The winning try during interschools OR a try scored for the Stormers? Winning try during Interschools. • Running over an opponent OR slicing through a gap? Boucing a player – I never had the speed to get through the gap.

GEROOSTERDEPAMPOEN-SLAAI MET

NEUTERIGE SPEK-KRUMMEL

Bekostigbaar, voedsaam en heerlik. Pampoen kan op soveel manière geniet word. Maak seker jy probeer hierdie ene!

PAMPOEN • 30 ml (2 e) olyfolie • 1 klein pampoen of 2 botterskorsies sout en varsgemaalde peper

BERGVLIET PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 715 1103 (e) secretary@bergvlietprimary.co.za Mandela Day 2019 BPS was approached by Naptosa to become a pledge school with Children4Children to assist Heaven’s Nest Child Care and Recreation Centre, an emergency foster home for children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected or who have been affected by HIV and AIDS. In keeping with our motto, “Servimus”, and wanting to reach out to mark Mandela Day, we readily agreed. We joined 16 other schools in this endeavour. We were asked to collect crayons as Heaven’s Nest have recently started a school. BPS responded in their usual generous manner and at our Mandela Day assembly, led by Mr Hill, a colourful wall of crayons was built in front of the stage. May we will continue to honour Madiba’s legacy by reaching out to those less fortunate than ourselves, and may all work together to make our homes, schools, communities, our country and our world a better place for all.

Eco Club Our Eco Club visited Dr Boomslang Indigenous Nursery on Wednesday 17 July. The Horticulturist Phelo spoke about 5 different indigenous plants. The very popular Carpobrotus Edulis better known as the sour fig which grows all over the Western Cape; the sap of the leaf can be used for nappy rash, burns itches and even sore throat. Many of these indigenous plants have medicinal properties. Many of our learners did not know all of this information and learnt quite a bit. Thank you as always to our staff for creating the opportunities for our learners to learn whilst having fun.

THE PINELANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 531 3674 (e) blueschool@mweb.co.za The Pinelands Primary School celebrates 93rd birthday! The Pinelands Primary School celebrated its 93rd birthday on Friday the 19th July. We had a special assembly where our prefects, Head prefects and Deputy Head prefects were named. Our guest speaker, a past pupil of the Blue School encouraged our learners not to give up but to persevere when situations become challenging. Each learner received some birthday treats at break time. Interhouse netball and soccer matches were played after break. Although it was chilly, everyone had fun. The best part of the day was when the teachers won their match against the U13 netball girls. The U13 soccer boys won their match against the teachers. What a lovely day we had!

WESTERFORD HIGH SCHOOL (t) 021 689 9154 (e) admin@westerford.co.za History Tour 2019 Westerfordians are a notoriously studious bunch. But even for the most diligent of pupils, dedicating the bulk of the mid-year break to academic endeavours seems somewhat excessive. What could possess a high-schooler - a matric enjoying the last morsels of peace before the onslaught of the third term, no less - to live and breathe school work over the holidays? European summer, of course! On the 15th of June, a group comprised of fifty-nine bright-eyed Grade 12s and five brave adults (Mr. Brookbanks, Mr Dicks, Mr & Mrs Niekerk and Ms Croxford) bade farewell to a chilly Cape Town for their tour. For all of the meaningful lessons and enriching experiences that characterised this trip, thanks must go to the group of teachers who coordinated and supervised the activities.

GREENFIELD GIRLS’ PRIMARY SCHOOL PJ Day We came to school in our pyjamas to support Reach for a Dream. It was a cosy day!

Building water towers out of paper The Grade 4s learnt that one can strengthen paper by folding it in various ways. They built water towers which had to hold a filled can of water. The towers were sturdy!

Red Cross The Grade 7s partnered with Red Cross Children’s Trust in the ‘Wrap the Hospital’ initiative. They collected 70 blankets for the children’s wards and painted a panel to show their support of the great work being done.

RUSTENBURG GIRLS’ JUNIOR SCHOOL (t) +27 (0) 21 689 1981 (e) head@rgjs.org.za Horizon Maths Competition Maia Birch was awarded first place (by the Minister of Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshekga) in the Top Ten Finalists in the Horizon Maths Competition in Johannesburg. Approximately 82 000 learners across the country participated in the competition.

Care Project One of several learner-driven initiatives received a big push this morning. SAPS (Claremont Station) and the CID (Claremont Improvement District) dropped in to support our RCL (Representative Council of Learners) initiative to collect sanitary items for less privileged girl learners by donating a box of sanitary towels. We appreciate their participation in this project. The drive started on the 15th July and will be ongoing.

Rondebosch Boys’ High School Mandela Day Celebrations Our theme for Mandela Day Assembly was how we follow the example of Madiba. We reflected upon how our student body is striving to follow the example of this Great Man. Over the past month, our young men have made an incredible impact by investing themselves in the Transkei School Project, the Langa Community Project, a number of class initiatives, Habitat for Humanity and hundreds of hours of community service. Our involvement in community building and social cohesion was further highlighted when Western Cape Blood Services awarded our school a trophy for donating the most blood in the schools’ challenge. We also launched the Bridges of Hope initiative, which is a project that requires volunteers to mentor young people from disadvantaged communities. In remembrance of Nelson Mandela and his incredible example of compassion, forgiveness and spirit of nation building, we paid tribute to Madiba’s great friend, Johnny Clegg, whose life work was to cross racial and cultural divides through his music.

Sun Valley Boys and Girls Knysna Soccer Tour

Groote Schuur Primary School 83rd Birthday

During the school holidays, the Sun Valley U13A and B Boys and Girls soccer Teams (48 students in total) set off to Knysna to take part in the Annual Knysna Soccer Festival. What an amazing experience for the kids as they played exciting matches against some of the strongest school and club teams in the Western and Eastern Cape. Our Teams performed superbly. The stand out team was the U13A Team who were UNBEATEN on Tour. What a performance by our girls.

On Saturday 13th July the school turned 83 years old. We had a founders day assembly on Friday. We were honoured to have our pervious principal that served the school for 30 years to address the pupils and share his experience of how the school has grown over the years. At Groote Schuur Primary we are extremely grateful for what has been put in place years ago to ensure what we have today.
