AWSUM Celebrity Interview V You released the album ‘Sing vir Liefde’ earlier this year and signalled a new direction with this album. What is different about your music on this album? A I wrote the majority of songs on this album mysefl. I could write what I had on the heart. Every album is about your life and in which place in your life you are at that stage. V You are the sister of the equally well-known and popular Bobby van Jaarsveld and performed with him on stage as guitar player and on background vocals. You also did a duet with him on his first album. What made you decide to go solo? Do you still perform together these days?

K arlien van Jaarsveld

Double SAMA-winner, television star and actress Karlien van Jaarsveld had a meteoric rise in the Afrikaans entertainment industry. AWSUM News chatted to her about her career, her children, and her dreams for the future.

A It is a road that God chose, and not me. We do not often perform together, but when we do, we enjoy it.

V Tell us about your childhood and where you grew up and went to school. A I remember that as children my brother and I always made the family sit down to watch us perform shows. It must be there where the music bug bit me. We moved around quite a bit, so I was in a number of schools, with most of my growing-up years spent in Brits and Witbank. V Your rise in the music industry was fast and successful. In 2011 you won the Best Newcomer award in the Tempo Awards. You were also awarded two SAMAs for Best Pop Album (Afrikaans) in 2014 (‘Uitklophou’) and 2016 (‘My Hartjie’). Tell us a bit more about these two albums and their success stories. A In my wildest dreams I would never have expected this. I always had a really good support team. What also helped a lot, is that people believed in me. V Your interests and talents are wide and varied. You have acted in films, performed on stage, and even won ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Season 8. Which of these non-music things do you enjoy the most? A I like being in film. You can sometimes play a character that is completely the opposite of yourself. I like a challenge. But one of the roles I enjoy the most these days, is to be a wife to my husband and a mother to my children. V You are the mom of two twin boys, Daniël and Eliah, with another little one on the way. How did motherhood change your life? What is the best thing about being a mom? How do you balance your career, marriage and motherhood? A It is one of the most amazing gifts that we as people can receive. Just to be with them every day and to see how they develop, is wonderful (but it happens too fast!). I am at home during the week and can spend time with them after school and during the evenings. They also regularly go on tour with me. Sometimes it feels as if I learn more from them than they from me.

A To spend time with my children and my husband.

V What is your advice for a first date?

V What was the highlight of your career so far? Why?

A Just be yourself.

A The opportunity to do ‘In jou skoene’, because it dealt with the things that really matter in life.

V Favourite pastime (when you get time)?

V What advice about love and life do you have for our high school learners? A Remember to just be yourself – it can sometimes feel awkward to be yourself and it could take years before you realise that to be yourself would always have been the best thing.

One POT PAN TRAY!!!! Two very special people, so talented and so down to earth, fuelled by their passion for food, I don’t ever think that they will ever get tired of working with it, eating it and loving it. I’m sure that this is what inspired them to write this lovely book, which is perfect for busy people. This sister-and-brother team know about ridiculous schedules, battling deadlines, and fighting the traffic to get home in time to put a delicious, healthy dinner on the table for their families. They are both parents and understand the luxury of time. Mari-Louis Guy and Callie Maritz make cooking simpler with this book about making a whole meal in one pot, frying or roasting pan – saving on electricity, labour and dishes. Yummy and fuss-free recipes for beef, chicken, seafood, pork, sausage, bacon and ham, meatballs and meat-free dishes, with a starch and vegetables. This is the perfect cookbook to make your life easier. Siblings as well as soulmates, Mari-Lous and Callie’s journey through food continues daily in their kitchen studio in Cape Town where they work with cameras and plays with food. Food stylists by trade, they work with all forms of media and advertising from stills to video and television, in addition to recipe and product development. Mari-Louis is a judge on the very popular baking TV show Koekedoor on kykNET. Callie writes about any and all South African-made beer and spirits and appears on the food programme DIS on ViaTV. GROOTE SCHUUR PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 685 7295 (e) deonie@gsps.co.za Coaching rugby clinic On Wednesday, 28 June our U13 rugby boys hosted Prince George Primary at a coaching rugby clinic which was initiated by our rugby players. The project was aimed at building relationships between the two schools and players. A new set of rugby jerseys (amongst other merchandise) was handed over to the school to be used by their senior rugby team. The highlight of the day was the presence of Cheslin Kolbe, who shared his vast rugby skills with the players. We are extremely thankful to the many parents who sacrificed personal time to help on the day. All the players were given goodie bags and certificates, handed over by Chelsin Kolbe. Many companies came on board to sponsor our project. The most amazing feeling was to see all the boys have fun.

THE GROVE PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 674 2077 (e) info@thegrove.co.za U13 Soccer teams compete in soccer festival The Girls’ and Boys’ U13 soccer teams spent a weekend in Knysna competing in a soccer festival. Despite the cold weather, there was a great deal of fun and lots of excellent play. As it was soon after the fires, which were still a major topic of conversation amongst the Knysna locals, we were looking forward to seeing the people we knew and being able to see first hand the devastation caused. We were able to take a large number of second-hand Grove T-shirts with us, which we handed on to the coordinators. They were very gratefully accepted and will be used by the Knysna Sports School and in the Rheenendal community. The Grovites displayed true Grove values through their behaviour and positive attitude. We received a number of very favourable comments and we are proud of our teams.

Knysna soccer tour On Thursday, 29 June Pinelands North Primary U13 soccer team departed for their soccer tour to Knysna. We arrived in Knysna on Thurday afternoon, saddened to see all the fire damage. Our accommodation was great and we were happy to support Knysna’s local economy. The soccer festival was played at the Rheenendal fields. We played five matches on the Friday and the team performed well. We had dinner at the waterfront each evening and mingled with the other teams from the festival. On the Saturday we played four matches and continued to play well. There was great team spirit and cameraderie between the players. After the soccer festival we took the team sand boarding at Buffels Bay. After breakfast on Sunday we departed back to Cape Town.

67 Kids to School doing their thing for Mandela Day! 11 SACS boys went out to Masiphumelele to assist Living Hope for the day. They helped to clean out the church, clean and repack their office and kitchen and packed all the chairs away. They also made sandwiches for around 180 kids and gave them apples. Then they helped out with the holiday

program and sang and danced with the kids. What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” Nelson Mandela

PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOL (t) 021 531 7410 (e) postmaster@phs.org.za Camping tour through Namibia In the July holidays a group of 16 Grade 11 and 12 learners from Pinelands High School set off on a 12-day overland camping tour through Namibia. The tour was organised by two teachers along with the tour company Africa4Us. Some of the sites visited were the Sesriem Canyon, Dune 45, Deadvlei, Spitzkoppe, Ai-Ais and the famous Fish River Canyon. The tour also swerved off the beaten track to include the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The group covered a distance of 4 244km during the tour. Many mornings involved waking up before sunrise to be on the road heading for the next spot. One such morning gave the group the opportunity to climb Dune 45 to watch the sunrise and then enjoy a delicious breakfast at the bottom which had been prepared by the crew. The group bonded over nights spent under large African skies while sharing stories and playing games around the campfire. The tour was an unforgettable and educational experience that gave the group the opportunity to explore a country that is rich in beauty. Students returned with a newfound love and respect for nature, and many new friends.
