Gary Kirsten
The ultimate family, business and sportsman
Gary Kirsten is a former South African opening batsman and the World Cup winning coach of the Indian cricket team. Kirsten is currently an assistant coach at Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore. This family man has 3 children and is the owner of Gary Kirsten Cricket Coaching business in Cape Town. While travelling Abu Dhabi on cricket camps, Gary Kirsten answered a few questions. Gary, you grew up in Rondebosch, Cape Town. What do you remember about your high school days at Rondebosch High? I really enjoyed the school. It provided me with a strong base to be able to make something of my life. Most importantly, it helped me understand that there is a certain way of doing things when trying to make the most of opportunities. How did you and your wife meet? We met at a popular student “hang out” in Cape Town. You always put your family first. How do you manage the top priorities in your life? I think we are all affected by our experiences as a child. I had two loving parents who did not like each other and it had a significant effect on me. It has made me determined that my children do not go through the same journey. What does a perfect family day look like in the Kirsten household? Like any other fully functioning family – we like to create experiences that provide longlasting memories. On the weekends we will always try and do something together. How and when did you decide that you want to pursue cricket and that you are really good? Not until I had finished school. My only measure in working out whether I could play the game professionally was how many runs I scored. I never thought I was particularly good or talented, but I kept scoring runs. What went through your mind when facing Glenn McGarth? He was one bowler who had the better of me throughout my career. I always felt distinctly uncomfortable facing him and probably did not do myself any favours with my mental approach.
You’ve met and played with/against great cricketers. Did you receive any wisdom you can share with us? The older one gets as a player the more comfortable one becomes with just who one is. I spent a lot of my career trying to be someone I wasn’t to please others. What do you prefer, playing or coaching cricket? I enjoyed the challenge of playing but I have loved every day of coaching. Please tell us about your coaching business? I work with a fantastic group of young enthusiastic and seriously good coaches. We provide a global coaching service to those who are interested in working with us. What does cricket mean to you? Cricket has been a way of life for me. It has taught me everything I am today. I am one of the fortunate few, who have been able to make a living out of something that has remained a passion and hobby. Any motivational words/ tips for a young cricketer? Be only who you uniquely are, represent a strong set of values in everything you do and understand that your career is your journey, not your destination. Don’t let your life be dictated by results and “bottom lines”. What is your favourite song? Don’t have one – do not really listen to music except if I am on a treadmill, which is not often. You reached great achievements in your cricket career, do you have any goals you still want to achieve as cricket coach? I love coaching and helping others learn about themselves. My journey is to continue finding methods and tools that help others optimize their potential.

Bean-andchocolate-brownies
12 Brownies. Preparation 10 minutes. Baking time 25 minutes. This brownies recipe doesn’t really fit into the Keto diet plan because it contains chickpeas and beans. I decided to share this with you because it’s such an interesting recipe and it only contains natural ingredients. The portions are very small so you don’t have to exceed your low carb limit. My Croatian flatmate and very good friend, Natasha Coetsee (née Buratovich) and her business partner, Jessica Riding from the non-profitable dance organization for kids, Move for Two introduced these brownies to me. When she told me how she made it I couldn’t believe her. Try for yourself! Brownies • 30 ml milk • 3 eggs • ¼ cup coconut • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 150 g dates • 1 can (400 g) chickpeas or black beans • ½ cup raw cacoa • ½ t pink salt • 1 t baking powder • 1 tablespoon butter
Chocolate layer (optional) • 100 g dark chocolate (85% of 90%) • 1 tablespoon erythritol • 1 tablespoon butter • 1 tablespoon coconut
1. Preheat oven to 180 °C 2. Mix the milk, eggs, coconut, vanilla and dates in a food processor untill the mixture is smooth. 3. Add the chickpeas or black beans and mix until smooth. 4. Sift the cacoa powder, salt and baking powder in a separate mixing bowl. 5. Add the bean mixture and the dry ingredients together and stir thoroughly until smooth. 6. Grease an oven plate with the butter and spread the mixture evenly on the plate. Bake for 25 minutes. 7. If you want to make the optional chocolate layer, melt the 100g chocolate, erythritol, butter and coconut in the microwave or on the stove and stir thoroughly. Place one side to cool. 8. Take the brownies out of the oven and cooldown for 15-20 minute 9. Spread the chocolate layer on the brownies and leave for 10 minutes in the fridge. Cut and serve with Earl Grey tea! 10. Put the extra brownies in the fridge!
Why do you think is it important to eat healthy? Food is very important to me. Not only to look good but food is also important to feel good. Food, exercise and sleep are the 3 main pillars for a healthy lifestyle. I believe that most of the illnesses origin comes from food. What type of recipes will be in your cookbook? Everything will be low carb recipes. Some more than others, but the core of all the recipes will be low carbs. From basic Banting to very low carbs ketogenic recipes. The book will have something for everybody and for every occasion. Tell us more about the Keto diet? Basically, it’s the same as the Banting’s low carbs, high fat diet but the idea is to put your body in Ketosis. Ketosis is the state where your body uses fat as energy and not carbohydrates. The Keto diet is VERY low in carbs, moderate protein and high in fat. You have 20minutes before a calltime, what is your go-to meal? Eggs, eggs and more eggs. Some vegetables like spinach, kale or Brussel sprouts pan-fried with 3-4 eggs. It’s quick and full of healthy nutrients. You can’t go wrong with eggs.
Armand Aucamp’s cookbook, ‘Armand Kook Kaal – 100 banting en Keto Resepte’ will be available from October 2018. In the meantime, Armand shared a very nice recipe with us!

Zelda will be embarking upon new challenges abroad and we are going to miss her dearly. A champion educator, a friend, a mom and someone that has touched too many lives to mention. Zelda, this is not a goodbye but rather a “See you later”.
Soccer tour During our recent soccer tour our leaners did not only play soccer but also had the opportunity to socially interact and build friendships. Awesome soccer was played during the tour. Our boys and girls were on fire! We had amazing days, incredible soccer, amazing vibe and plenty laughs.
The visit to the puzzle park was fun!
One of the girls, Liana celebrated her birthday on the tour and was woken up in style on her birthday!

PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOL Dynamic Pinelands High Debating Duo Kelsey Everts (Grade 12) and Keren Parker (Grade 10) entered the British Parliamentary Debating League run by the Cape Town Speaking Academy earlier this year. The tournament ran at UCT over four weekends. At the league debates, Kelsey and Keren spoke in a different format to the one normally used for interschool competitions. In the British Parliamentary format, there are only two people in a team, and a much shorter preparation time – only 20 minutes from receiving the topic to starting the debate. The girls participated in seven preliminary rounds before progressing to the semi-finals and finals. Unfortunately they lost in the finals but still performed exceptionally well.

Diversity focus week In celebration of youth month, the Groote Schuur family celebrated unity in a diversity focus week. Displays of different languages and communities adorned the walls of various passages, while learner performances livened up assembly and breaks. A talk on “Diversity and Inclusivity” by Simphiwe Mahlanya allowed learners to revise their understanding of diversity and arrive at new insights. The learner leader Cultural Portfolio did a sterling job in organizing and hosting the first of many such focus weeks in months to come.

#Coolture week Our ever inventive Arts and Culture HOD designed a #Coolture T-shirt for the staff to wear during Coolture week while we celebrated art, music, literature, dance, drama, writing and photography. The entire staff; support staff, admin, finance and teachers sported these T-shirts and they were especially noticeable when we all stood on the stage and performed to the girls. Hanging out at Rustenberg Girls Junior School for their #Coolture week was great! We had fun discussing and telling stories. Thanks to Jenny Wates for organising the visit.
