Rolene Strauss is the beauty pageant titleholder of Miss South Africa 2014 and was later crowned Miss World 2014. Rolene is the third South African to be crowned Miss World. In 2017 she has officially graduated as a medical docter, but further more she is a mother, wife, business woman, mentor and humanitarian. AWSUM asked her a few questions.
You grew up in Volksrust in Mpumalanga, please tell us about your childhood and your hometown. I grew up in a very protected environment. My parents raised me and my brother to believe that we can achieve absolutely anything we put our minds to. Our environment and our parents insured for a little naivety, but I wouldn’t have changed it for the world. We had a rule in the house; we don’t play inside while the sun is still out. I remember multiple times where my mom had to literally catch us to bring us inside for a bath. I am so grateful for my childhood and get really emotional thinking that various children don’t get to grow up as carefree as I did. What school did you attend? I attended Pionier Primary School and Volksrust High School in Volksrust. What did you like about school? I strongly believe that the fact that I went to school in a ‘small town’ helped me cope in the ‘adult life’. Because we were quite small, the learners had to participate in most of the school activities. I remember playing first team hockey and netball, doing athletics, participating in the debating competitions, being CSV leader, head girl and focussing on academics to ensure I get accepted to study medicine. This taught me how to manage my time and work for what I wanted to achieve in life. How would you describe yourself as a teenager? I remember spending days on my best friend’s family farm climbing mountains, building clay houses, milking cows, playing in the maize silo’s and nurturing small birds. I absolutely love nature and was fortunate to have a wonderful care-free childhood. My friends and I even planned a petition to vote off the ‘always wear school shoes’ rule in high school. If you can go back in time, what would you tell the 16-year-old Rolene? The opportunities will come, your responsibility is to be ready for them. Your dad is a doctor and your mom a nurse, when and why did you decide to follow in their footsteps? I can’t remember a certain day or year I decided to become a doctor. It was just what it was. I was born with it. My nickname was ‘Little Dr Strauss’ as I visited my dad’s patients with him and held their hands when he operated or did anything nerve-wracking according to them. I saw the way he was loved and appreciated and my dad has been my hero ever since. You took a break from your medical studies for two years to fulfill your duties as Miss South Africa and then Miss World 2014, why did you decide to go back to studying medicine in 2016? I wouldn’t have been Rolene if I didn’t complete my studies. It is an integral part of who I am and I also believe in finishing what you have started. Did you find it difficult to go back to studying after all the fame and travel? It was definitely an adjustment as I was in a different year group who didn’t know me as Rolene but as former Miss World. I also got married the year I went back to studying, fell pregnant and gave birth to our son in January of my final year. Some of the patients also recognised me, which turned into a few awkward moments, but the University of the Free State was very supporting, my fellow students were amazing, and I enjoyed my last two years of studying thoroughly.

What is your biggest dream at the moment? What would you really like to achieve professionally? I would like to be known as a great wife and mother who always put her family first and as a woman who did everything she put her mind to with absolute dedication, to the best of her ability and honouring God through it all. Two projects I am currently spending most of my time on are RevitaHealth (a health orientated organisation I opened on the 1st of October with my sister in law Dr Ledivia Strauss) and a spoken word album which will be released end of this year. What’s your best advice for teenage girls to be healthy and happy and to deal with body-image issues? Our motto at RevitaHealth is: “Be Yourself but be the Your Best Self”. It is about being the best version of yourself. It is not about what you look like, but how healthy you are from the inside out. Do not compare. I know it is easier said than done, I must remind myself of these things every single day. Focus on your health and the rest will follow. You tied the knot with D’Niel Strauss late in 2016 and was blessed with a baby boy in 2017. How do you find married life and motherhood? I find it absolutely exhilarating, humbling and sometimes challenging. The best thing about being a wife and a mother is forgetting about my own obstacles and focusing on nurturing the ones I love most in the whole wide world. This puts everything into perspective to me. As long as my loved ones are safe and healthy, nothing else can be too difficult to handle. What is less pleasant about beauty pageants? Beauty pageants are, believe it or not, a mind game. You can’t really change your physical appearance or the judges. They either like you or they don’t. That is not in your hands. The most challenging part is what goes on in your mind. Are you comparing yourself to the others? Are you breaking yourself down emotionally? The most I have ever grown emotionally was during the Miss South Africa and Miss World competitions. You have to become your best self and know yourself inside out for you to really enjoy the experience. That is what the judges will see and appreciate. How do you handle the fame and attention that comes your way? I see it as a privilege and a wonderful opportunity to have a positive influence on the lives of others. What makes your heart beat faster? Every time our (very busy) son runs an inch past the corner of a table, jumps off chairs without any warning or calls me “Mamma” and gives me a kiss. What are your hobbies? Spending quality time with my family, playing golf, exercising and listening to audio books. What song or band is playing in your car at the moment? My husband and I listen to audio books while we drive, the one playing in my car at the moment is “The Richest Man in Babylon” by George Samuel Clason.

PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 531 3414 (e) admin@pnps.co.za PNPS pupil writes a book!! Esam Mjenxane from Grade 3 races into our school library with a big smile as he asks, “Is it on the shelf yet?” I laugh at his enthusiasm, as I humbly apologise for it not being there yet. Esam got his story idea about a spy puppy while watching a movie about a dog who had a friend that was a spy. After his father read it, they decided to publish it. I found out while interviewing Esam that he is fascinated with stories which inspire him to write his own. He is hoping to become a famous author one day. Esam’s smile spreads across his face again while he writes his name in our copy of “Max the spy puppy” and places it on the shelf, ready for his fellow bookworms to read. This book is Esam’s first story and we look forward to seeing his next one published, titled “Swimmer the dolphin”.

Mount Kilimanjaro Expedition Rondebosch Boys’ High School couldn’t be prouder of Jochen Mosig, Grade 11, who summited Mount Kilimanjaro over the recent school holidays. Six days were spent on the mountain (four and a half days ascending, plus one and a half days descending). Jochen used this opportunity to raise funds for the Rondebosch Boys’ High School, Rowing Club. At the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, where breathing was difficult due to the high altitude, Jochen Mosig proudly sang the RBHS School Song. Jochen, certainly has flown the RBHS flag “higher and wider” and is truly an inspiration to other ‘Bosch boys. Notes from Jochen Mosig’s Expedition Journal: ‘’Thursday the 11th, at 08:33. I summited Mount Kilimanjaro at Uhuru Peak (5895 m). This incredible journey has changed me in ways
I never knew possible. During the 9 hour summit attempt I discovered a pain & fear that I had never experienced before, having contracted food poisoning & acute mountain sickness the entire trip. This was easily the darkest & most difficult 9hours of my life. As we reached Stella point I, in turn, discovered a beautiful & powerful motivation to push towards Uhuru as the incredibly picturesque sunrise lit up the devastatingly long & difficult path a had journeyed through already. 13 words and 2 songs kept me going through this most challenging time. The former being “The heads never drop, the hearts never stop & and passion never dies” - Damian Sparks, the latter being my school song & “Come the Day”. - Jochen Mosig

Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz evacuate all of the Sugar Rush residents to other games before it is shut down, placing the racers in the care of Fix-It Felix Jr. and Sergeant Tamora Jean Calhoun. Ralph and Vanellope then use the arcade’s new connection to the Internet to go looking for a replacement steering wheel. While they find a source for a replacement wheel, they need money, leading them to join a free-to-play violent racing game, Slaughter Race, where they meet Shank, one of the game’s drivers. Vanellope is taken in by what Slaughter Race has to offer over Sugar Rush, and Shank becomes a big sister figure for Vanellope, making Ralph concerned that Vanellope no longer looks up to him nor will return to her game.
