Cato Louw is known for her passion and love for sport. If she’s not busy interviewing famous sportspeople, you can find her on radio or next to a sports field. Cato started her broadcasting career at MFM radio station in 2013 in Stellenbosch. With the Rugby World Cup currently on the go, AWSUM caught up with her to find out what her predictions are.

What kind of teenager would you say you were? I was the eldest of three daughters and naturally I felt my parents were stricter with me. I think I was a well-mannered and disciplined teenager. My homework was always done on time and every sport I tried out, I went full out and gave my everything! You started your radio career at MFM, and you currently work at KFM. What would you say did you learn from radio which you still use in your daily life today? Well a couple of things, if I did not start out at campus radio, I don’t think I would’ve been down this professional broadcasting path. One of the biggest lessons was that one should always think on your feet because you’re live. If something is not going according to plan, you should be able to adapt quickly. Another thing radio taught me, was that you learn how to work with different personalities. The program and brand are bigger than anything that happens on air. Preparation is another hugely important part and radio drilled that principle into me. What type of sports did you participate in at school? Absolutely everything! I was and still am crazy about team sports. I did water polo, netball, hockey and tennis. I was the person who always cheered the loudest on the field. I think this was due to my family’s competitive genetics and active lifestyle.

Tell our readers how your love for sport/rugby came about? Where did it start? My dad has a rather serious back problem and he’s been living with severe pain for many years. The only way he could control the pain, was when he kept moving and stayed active. He played league tennis, cycled a lot and my mother encouraged us to keep active. Sport was a big part of the Louw lifestyle. My love for rugby started with my father. He is a professor and thanks to his amazing ability to simplify the game and explain what was happening, I was hooked. The 2007 World Cup convinced me that I wanted to work in rugby circles. You spent a good couple of weeks covering the Currie Cup tournament. What are your best memories? The Currie Cup is a proudly South African product that we can be very proud of. It was an amazing honour to work at this prestigious event. Because of my history with working at the Varsity Cup, one of my favourite things to witness is the rise of new and exciting talent. Players like Tyrone Green, Pepsi Buthelezi and Joseph Dweba are players to look out for. The Springboks are currently taking part in the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Realistically, what do you think the chances are of us reaching the semi final or even the final? Any key players we need to keep an eye out for? If you ask any South African, I think they’ll all say we could win the cup this year. Coach Rassie Erasmus has been busy building this team for quite some time and he tested and made sure that these combos would actually work on the pitch. Key players would include the likes of Handré Pollard, Duane Vermeulen and our captain Siya Kolisi. If you’re not busy with all things sports, what do you do to relax? I really love taking my dog Olympia on a Promenade walk in Cape Town. I like to gym and do some yoga too. Cape Town’s food markets is a must and when I’m lazy I’ll stay at home, chill, watch Netflix and play Sudoku.

What inspires you? People that manage to rise above their dire circumstances, are very inspirational. People that don’t give up inspire me! That is why sport fascinates me. How would you like to be remembered? I hope people will remember me for being able to tell stories about inspirational people. There are so many sporting heroes and their stories need to be heard. I would also like to be remembered as the person who really loved her job and was always professional and enthusiastic. What are you listening to right now in your car? Is there any song you listen to on repeat? I like all types of music. My phone’s shuffle setting works overtime but at the moment I’m a big Taylor Swift fan (please forgive me!) If you had to create a ‘how-to-guide’ for teens who want to make a success in the broadcasting industry, what would the first three steps be? 1. Try everything! By doing so, you’ll find out what your passion is and where your strengths lie. Do MC work, work behind the scenes and be a DJ too. 2. Start at a campus or community radio station: Disclaimer- this does not happen overnight. Be willing to work for a few years without earning any money. 3. Build relationships: It’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know! The contacts you build during your early radio days would probably be the same people you work with at a commercial station level. 2019 is not over yet – what is still in store for Cato Louw? I’m super excited to work for SuperSport during the Rugby World Cup. Mondays I’m on SuperRugby with Kobus Wiese and others, while on Thursdays I present ‘In Touch’ online with Sam Ludidi. I am also still on KFM and Cape Talk where I work as a sports reader.

We must start by asking you about your school background. Please tell our readers a bit more about your school career. I attended Hoërskool Grens in East London and we were about 600 learners at that stage. I really loved the togetherness and the fact that we could chat, eat and relax during break times. We were so proud when any of our teams won on the sports field. I think my teachers would say I was full of enthusiasm and energy! They are also likely to tell you that one of my friends and I were always busy eating.

Quick fire: Braai or takeaways? Braai Steri Stumpie, orange juice or coffee? Definitely coffee! Springboks live or a music festival? Springboks! TV or Radio presenter? I can’t choose between these! A bakkie or a sportscar? Definitely a bakkie. I could transport my dog with it. Puma, Nike or Adidas? Nike, mainly because of Roger Federer’s involvement. Favourite holiday destination? Somewhere in the woods or near the ocean would be perfect. Knysna or the Eastern Cape coastline are two of my favourites.

PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOL (t) 021 531 7410 (e) postmaster@phs.org.za Movement against gender-based violence In the week of 9-13 September, we saw an unprecedented national outpouring of grief and rage at the scourge of gender-based violence that permeates our society and our lives. In our school, students and staff have stood up against gender-based violence via protests, poster displays, gatherings, the wearing of symbols and increased engagement on the topic in classes and in assembly. Our aim as a school is to continue to hold this movement in the forefront of our minds, and to seek ways of ensuring that our education programme and actions are sustainable. We thank the many parents and members of our extended community for their support as demonstrated in messages and in their attendance at our silent protest on Forest Drive on Friday, 13 September 2019.

PINELANDS NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 531 3414 (e) admin@pnps.co.za Casual day:“Time to shine with persons with disabilities” On Friday 13 September 2019, our pupils had a casual day with the theme “Time to shine with persons with disabilities”. We used this day as an opportunity to highlight the current negativity in our country, focusing on different ways to be better people and citizens. Pinelands North Primary School stood united to shine for a truly great cause, SHINE YOUR OWN LIGHT, to make this world a better place. This message is engrained in our ethos and daily running of the school. We believe that the “Habits of mind”, being referred to daily, will help breed responsibility, integrity, tolerance and respect, not only in our community, but spreading this as far as we can. Please help us make a conscious effort to “catch” our pupils doing the RIGHT thing at all times. Our healthy snack for the next two weeks is broccoli.

Stand against Gender Based Violence

South African Schools Rugby

On Friday, the 6th September, Groote Schuur High School, joined their fellow High Schools in making a stand against Gender Based Violence. The learners lined both Palmyra and Camp Ground Roads, holding placards and banners with antiviolence slogans on them. This was followed by a student run assembly held on the school’s Inversnaid Field. Learners recited poems they had written in honour of the victims and held a moment of Silence. A group of learners then proceeded to the Claremont police station, where they handed a memorandum directly in the Station Commanders ‘ hands. The memorandum, signed by 1,081 people from Groote Schuur, Claremont and Livingstone High Schools, demanded that the police provide better protection to women and children. Their demands included : • An increase in police presence and visibility around schools in the area and en route to the bus terminals and train station before and after school; • Presentation of self-defence workshops to pupils and staff of neighbourhood schools; • Improved response time when a crime is reported; • Increased diligence of police officers to help ensure victims do not suffer twice; • That justice be served; • Increased patrols after hours for learners who engage in extra-mural school programmes; • The installation of community surveillance systems around schools; • The presence of police officers at public transport hubs; and • Properly trained personnel and proper care facilities for trauma victims. Teacher Chelsyn Solomons said the ongoing violence against women and children saddened him to his core. He called on the learners to raise awareness, whether it be among friends, peers or family. “I would like to encourage everyone not to let fear overpower you but to find the courage that is within you to rise and to stand up.”

Rondebosch Boys’ High School’s 1st XV prop, Bryan le Roux, was selected for the South African Schools squad for the international series in August versus France, England, Wales and Argentina. He is the fifth Rondebosch player in the SA Schools squad in as many years: 2015 Ashwin Adams and Zain Davids, 2016 Mike Mavovana, 2018 Mihlali Mgolodela. Well done Bryan! The school is very proud of the learner!
