Most memorable moment on the field? Beating St Johns on their home field in 2018.
Most memorable moment on the field? The draw against KES on the 18 May 2019.
Hobbies outside of rugby? Surfing when I go on holiday and playing the guitar.
Hobbies outside of rugby? Golf and gym.
How are your pre-season preparations going? Our pre-season started in 2018, November which focused on individual skills which has been beneficial in our preparation as team for the season.
How is your pre-season preparations going? Preparations for the season were well managed. A good balance of gym work with the important field sessions.
Why did you decide to come to school St Stithians College? My cousin was first team rugby captain in 2012, and I watched his games. He showed me the school and I fell in love with it and I wanted to follow in his footsteps and fortunately I got to do that.
Why did you decide to come to St John’s College? It suited my family and me. I am a Christian and the morals of the school are in line with our family values.
What makes it special to run out for your first team? 750 boys strong, singing for the fifteen players on the field. The passion and the comradery that it creates within the school is electrifying and motivates all of us to play well for the badge and for the legacies before us. What’s your favourite position? Scrumhalf and flyhalf. Who is the joker in the team and why? Yenam – he always comes up with funny things to say and although his stature is massive, he always brings a laugh to the practice. Who is the gym bomb in the team? Munashe Mhere, the prop. He works very hard in the gym and it has reflected in his selection for Cravenweek and SA Training camp in 2018. What motivates you on Saturdays to give your best? Only fifteen players get to wear this jersey. We made a promise as a team to leave the jersey in a better place after every game last year and this year we chose to be known as a brave side. This motivates me when I am tired and pushes me through pain barriers. Is there someone special watching you on game day and if so, what is her name? My cousin, first team rugby captain of St Stithians 2012. Jonothan Bredell who will be watching my first game of this season. Best moment after a game? Chatting about the tries we have scored and which guys got stepped and having a good laugh about it. as well as chatting about who played well. Who was your matric hero when you were Gr 8 and Gr 9? Nick Archibald, he was my matric and first team captain when I was in grade 8. He lead the team well and always watched my games on the sidelines.
What makes it special to run out for the first team? The war cry that we run onto, the thought of those who have worn my jersey before me and the pride that I have for rugby and my school. What’s your favourite position? My favourite position is flanker which I play at the moment. Who is the joker in the team and why? The joker in our team is our scrumhalf, Michael Bate, he has a great sense of humour and is always able to come with a witty joke regardless of the situation. Who is the Gym Bomb in the team? The gym bomb is our outside centre, Jack Montgomery, he is incredibly strong and works like a demon in the gym. What motivates you on Saturdays to give your best? I don’t enjoy a game unless I go all out, so I guess you could say it’s for the love of rugby. Is there someone special watching you on game day, and if so what is her name? My girlfriend Emma Davis, a true support who most importantly doesn’t want me to get hurt. Best moment after a game? The best moment after a game I would say was when we beat Noordheuwel on the opening night of our festival. The boys were extremely excited and the changeroom was a place joy. What was your matric hero when you were in Gr. 8 and 9? My her in Grade 8 was Nick Combanis. He was the first team flanker and someone I will always look up to. Choose One: Tackle or Clean: Tackle. Dummy or side-step: Side-step. Winning try or Winning kick: Winning try.
Who is the first rugby team’s favourite netball or hockey player? Travis Ladner. Captain of first team hockey. Choose One: Tackle or Clean: Tackle Dummy or side-step: Sidestep Winning try or Winning kick: Winning kick. Happened against St Johns in 2018 on their home field, and the whole school stormed the field.

THE HISTORY OF THE
PINK DERBY DAY
In 2008, Luke Kuttschreuter (then in Matric) approached Mr Martin Huysamer (Deputy: Student Affairs) to ask whether he would be allowed to sell pink ribbons to the students at St John’s in order to raise awareness and funds for the oncology unit at a local hospital. He and his brother, Alex, had lost their mom to cancer a few years earlier. From these humble beginnings and after much brainstorming and tweaking over the next couple of years, the idea of a Pink Derby Day emerged which aims at raising awareness around breast cancer. In 2016 we hosted the first fully-fledged Pink Derby Day against St Stithians. We teamed up with The Pink Drive Organization (whose aims are to provide free support and counselling services to women across South Africa) and raised funds for them through various initiatives on the day, including the selling and auctioning of pink roses and cupcakes to spectators, having a percentage of the sale of food and drinks on the day dedicated to the cause and supporting the merchandise which they sold from their PinkDrive stall. Spectators from both schools are encouraged to wear pink on the day. The school is decked out in pink and the first hockey and rugby teams of both schools wear pink socks. The hockey goalposts and rugby posts are “pinked” including the lines on the fields. Pink Drive provides a mobile screening clinic where women can get free scans the day before and on match day. This facility is mostly used by the school’s grounds, catering and cleaning staff. St Stithians agreed in 2018 that they would reciprocate by also dedicating this fixture to this cause, which was great news! Hopefully the impact of having two great boys’ schools in Johannesburg supporting a women’s health issue at their derby fixture will go a long way to heightening awareness around this potentially fatal disease. We are hoping that this annual Pink Derby Day initiative will take off between other traditional boys’ and girls’ schools in Johannesburg and beyond. The sentiment is that while the healthy rivalry on the fields of play remains, the overarching message would be that the students and supporters of each school can stand united in pink on the day for a very worthy cause.
