QR (Quick Response) codes are popping up everywhere! Perhaps you’ve seen them in magazines and on billboards. On a web page or even on someone’s t-shirt? Well, it’s official. AWSUM now has them too! Here’s how they work …
quick (hence the Q in QR) and easy way to link the physical world with the virtual world.
WHAT ARE QR CODES? Well, they are similar to normal barcodes you find on everyday products. QR codes are chunks of information encoded in a two-dimensional graphic. Whereas a supermarket barcode consists of vertical lines, a QR code encodes info vertically and horizontally – so you can get more info on it. You scan QR codes with your mobile phone or tablet.
HOW DO YOU READ QR CODES? These are the two essential things you need to read a QR code: • a mobile smart phone or tablet with a camera • a piece of software called a QR reader: this you can download for free from most app stores. • Open the QR reader app on your phone. Point your phone camera at the bar code and snap! ▪ If your phone is scanning the code correctly, you will then see a link and be taken to it immediately Scan the two QR codes at the top of this paper to read AWSUM online or to like us on Facebook. WHERE CAN YOU FIND QR CODES? A QR code might contain nutritional information on your breakfast cereal box. Or it can contain travel information at your bus stop, or a link to an online timetable. A TART WITH A DIFFERENCE! Beetroot tart with baby rocket (serves 4)
This is such a simple tart, yet it always gets a “wow” from my guests because it looks so beautiful on a plate. If beetroot is not your favourite, use grilled tomatoes and basil. WHAT YOU’LL NEED: 1 sheet ready-made puff pastry, 1 egg, beaten Topping 1 cup cream cheese ½ cup heavy cream juice of one lemon 4 large cooked beetroots, thinly sliced and patted dry Salad ¼ cup olive oil ½ tablespoon lemon juice salt and pepper 2 cups baby rocket ¼ cup Parmesan shavings WHAT TO DO: ◦ Preheat the oven to 200 C. Lightly dust a work surface with flour and then roll out the puff pastry until it is 4mm thick. Cut out four discs with an 11.5cm round pastry cutter. Using a sharp knife, lightly score around the pastry discs 1cm from the edge, taking care not to cut through the pastry. Brush the edges with the beaten egg and place the pastry discs on to a non-stick baking sheet. Poke a few
holes in the pastry and place in the oven on the middle shelf. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden. Once cooked, remove from the oven and leave to cool. Topping Blend the cream cheese, cream and lemon juice together. Spread over the base of the cooled tart shells. Arrange the beetroot slices on top of the cheese mixture. Be sure that the beetroot slices are relatively dry so the pink juice does not run on to the white cream. Salad Whisk the olive oil and lemon juice together in a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Pour this vinaigrette over the baby rocket and toss. To serve, place individual tarts on plates and top with rocket and Parmesan shavings.

Vertical plants and gardens are all the rage at the moment. Try this fun, inexpensive and quick-to-make hanging pot plant and be sure to impress!
You will need: • plant, • thick rope, • round margarine tub or similar container with lid, • terracotta planter
Be AWSUM. Read AWSUM. Cut a big hole in the lid and a smaller hole in the bottom of the tub.
Thread the rope through the bottom hole and secure with a big knot inside the tub.
Place the pot plant over the knot in die tub and feed the leaves through the big hole in the lid. Secure the lid firmly.
Thread the rope through the hole in the bottom of the terracotta planter and voila!
As gevolg van ons betrokkenheid by die invorderings van skoolgelde word ons somtyds gekonfronteer met ouers wat weier en/of versuim om skoolgeld te betaal. Een van die algemeenste argumente wat aangevoer word is dat die ouer weier om skoolgeld te betaal aangesien ‘n egskeidings‐ of onderhoudsbevel bepaal dat die nie‐toesighoudende ouer in terme van ‘n Ho�evel of ooreenkoms verplig is om die skoolgelde te betaal. Ingevolge Ar�kel 40 van die Skolewet, bepaal die Wet dat ‘n ouer verplig is om skoolfooie te betaal. Die Kinderwet van 2005 definieer ‘n ouer as “die biologiese vader en moeder van ‘n kind wat insluit die aanneemouers van ‘n aangenome kind”. Die egskeidings‐ of onderhoudsbevel raak nie die vorderingsregte van die skool by die afdwinging en betaling van skoolfooie nie. Hierdie bevel is ‘n instrument wat die partye; synde die vader en moeder; se onderlinge verhouding met mekaar reguleer en kan dit nie teen die skool as ‘n verweer geopper word nie. Beide ouers bly dus gesamentlik en afsonderlik aanspreeklik vir skoolfooie. In terme van Ar�kel 39 van die Skolewet kan ‘n ouer aansoek doen vir die vrystelling van skoolfooie, welke aansoek gereguleer word deur die regulasies vir die vrystelling van ouers onder die Skolewet. Hierdie aansoek om vrystelling moet jaarliks gedoen word en kan daar nie bloot aangeneem word dat ouers elke jaar vrygeskeld word nie. Regulasie 6 skryf die prosedure asook die formule voor vir vrystelling en die persentasie daarvan. Soos enige goed gedisiplineerde organisasie volg die skole maar net die magte wat aan hul verleen is deur middel van wetgewing. Die Grondwet van Suid‐Afrika maak voorsiening dat elke kind ‘n reg het tot onderrig, maar saam met sodanige reg kom daar verplig�nge en een van hierdie verplig�nge is die betaling van skoolfonds ten einde die beheerliggaam in staat te stel om toe te sien dat die beste onderrig vir jou kind gegee kan word.

Hoërskool Langenhoven 6 AUGUST 2014 Dassies se harte is groot
“Elke persoon het die vermoë en verantwoordelikheid om daagliks ‘n positiewe impak te maak”. Hierdie woorde omskryf die boodskap van Mandela-maand. Carmen van der Walt, Mej. Langenhoven2014, wou hierdie boodskap uitleef en het haar hart oopgemaak vir die minderbevoorregtes. Carmen, saam met die Leerlingraad van die skool, het leerders aangemoedig om op Donderdag, 31 Julie 2014, nie-bederfbare kos bymekaar te maak en vir ‘n welsynsorganisasie te skenk. Leerders is die geleentheid gegee om met gewone klere skool toe te kom in ruil vir ‘n blikkie kos of ‘n R5-donasie. Dit word aan die HIV kliniek in die dorp geskenk sodat hulle dit verder aan dié wat dit nodig het, kan versprei.
Nόg ‘n Das verwerf Presidentsverkenner-toekenning Divan Calitz, ‘n graad 12-leerder verbonde aan Hoërskool Langenhoven, is na twaalf jaar se harde werk beloon. Hy het in graad 1 met Voortrekkers begin en is al vir die afgelope 12 jaar aktief by hierdie organisasie betrokke. Om vir die Presidentsverkennertoekenning te kwalifiseer, moes hy in die 12 jaar ‘n aktiewe Voortrekker wees en genoeg oord- en gebiedskampe bygewoon het. Na strawwe evaluering het Divan die Presidentsverkenner-toekenning behaal. Sy naam word by dié van vele Dasse gevoeg wat al hierdie gesogte toekenning in die verlede losgeslaan het. Om ‘n Presidentsverkenner te word is die hoogste toekenning wat ‘n junior Voortrekker kan behaal.

Die Dasse se rugby, hokkie en netbal was op Saterdag, 2 Augustus 2014, gans te sterk vir Hoërskool Montagu. Hoërskool Punt AIC Tour
The aim of the Adventure Into Citizenship tour was to show us how Government functions. In addition we were taken to see examples of community projects in Cape. Together with 44 other students across the Western Cape we had an exciting and jam packed program over the week of the 29th of June to the 5th of July. We had a series of amazing events such as visiting the High Court, the Parliament, MTN Science center, the Coca-cola factory and the Chris Barnard museum. We also had a few motivational speakers including Mr. Braam Malherbe- an extreme conservationist and one of the first men to run the entire wall of china to collect money for charity. There was also an opportunity for a few students who appeared on the Hectic9-nine show on SABC 2 and a photo shoot by a highly qualified photographer. We were taken to Khayalitcha to see firsthand how a community garden operates. On the last night we were taught to play the African drums. I am very grateful to the Rotary Club of Mossel Bay for this opportunity.

Oakdale lewer SA-rugbyspeler Afgesien van die groot hoeveelheid provinsiale rugbyspelers wat die Hoër Landbouskool Oakdale jaarliks oplewer, is daar oor die afgelope sewentien jaar veral heelwat SA-skolesplers opgelewer. Die spanne van Oakdale ding landwyd teen die groot skole mee en geniet spelers baie goeie blootstelling teen die bestes in die land. Dit is presies wat die Oakdale senter, JT Jackson, vanjaar reeds by verskeie geleenthede gedoen het “Om te wys dat hy die beste skolesenter in die land is.” JT het verneem dat hy ingesluit is in die SA skolespan vir wedstryde teen buitelandse spanne. Dit was veral tydens die onlangse Cravenweek dat dit baie duidelik was dat JT ʼn baie goeie kans staan vir insluiting in die SA-skolespan. Oakdale het sedert 1999 reeds 15 SA-spelers opgelewer. Johan Muller, Pedrie Wannenburg en Meyer Bosman is ook Oakdalers wat reeds in die senior Springbokspan uitgedraf het.

Rugby
Die 1ste Rugby span
P.W. Botha se 1ste sokker span het hulle eerste wedstryd van die jaar teen Pacaltsdorp gespeel. Daar lê nog ‘n blink toekoms voor vir hierdie span.
Die 1ste rugby span na die wedstyd op Uniondale Makotterdag 26 Julie, teen Hs Sentraal, Beaufort Wes met ‘n trotse wen 25-8.
VCSV Koffiekroeg
Elson Bock, SWD-rugbyspeler en ou Springbok-7’s speller het die 1ste Rugby span kom toespreek 1 Augustus 2014.
Op Donderdagaand, 31 Julie het die leerders van P.W. Botha in groot getalle opgeruk na die laaste Koffiekroeg van die jaar. Hierdie keer het die gewone getalle byna verdubbel en ons was 82. ‘n VCSV diensjaar vir Christus span van Stellenbosch onder leiding van Rufus Vermaak, het ons besoek. Hierdie sou ook die laaste koffiekroeg vir ons matrieks wees en vir die grootste groep van vanjaar se kringleiers. Ricus het ons voorgegaan met sy kitaar en nadat ons heerlik saamgesing het, het hy die Here se ongelooflike liefde met ons gedeel. Hierdie was ook vir ons weereens ‘n bewys dat die Here op wonderlike maniere werk, deurdat hulle juis opgedaag het op die tyd toe die ander groep wat ons sou besoek het, laat weet het dat hulle nie meer kan kom nie.
Hierna het ons heerlik “hot chocolate” gedrink en nog bietjie gesels en gekuier. Vanjaar se derde koffiekroeg het vir ons op ‘n hoogtepunt afgesluit en ons sien baie uit na wat 2015 vir ons gaan bring. ‘n Groot dankie aan al die leerders wat moeite gedoen het om dit by te woon. Hoop almal het dit net so baie soos ons geniet.

York High School 10 AUGUST 2014 York first hockey girls in Bloemfontein York was invited to the first Super 8-Hockey tournament held in Bloemfontein at ‘Christelike en NationaleSekondereMeisieskoolOranje’ from the 6 – 10 August. Oranje invited the top schools in the major provinces to participate in a tournament where they finally get to rank the schools! The York girls played their toughest opponents the first day! OranjeMeisies, Eunice (Both from Bloemfontein) and St Stithians (JHB). The other schools that participated were: St Mary’s Waverley(JHB), Claredon Girl’s High School(East London), DF Malan Hoërskool (Cape Town), Durban High School. Playing against teams where players have been
selected and play for South Africa was not only intimidating but extremely challenging! York’s 1st girls played hard and were determined to get a win or two in against the schools of this quality of hockey. And our team did us proud by doing just this! We, here in the Southern Cape breed our girls well and they were commended for being, not only a team filled with the right spirit but a group of impeccable young ladies on and off the field! Our captain, Holly Blew, was nominated as one of the “all Star” players at the tournament! York (under the coaching of Diane Jonker ) had attained a 7th final placing in the Top Schools rating and this is the best performance from York in years.

Equestrian Girls
June de Wit, Samantha de Viliiers and GemmaKleu represented the SWD at the SANESA Regional Competition for high schools in Stellenbosch over the weekend of 9 – 10 August with Gemma being the captain of the SWD team. York is proud of our equestrian riders. The girls performed as follows: June de Wit: First place for Performance and Prelium Dressage – test
2and a second place for Prelium Dressage - test 4. Samantha de Villiers: First place for the 80cm Working Hunter, and second places for Novice Dressage and 90 cm Show jumping. Gemma Kleu: Second places for Working Hunter and Equitation. Well done to these girls who, together with their trusted steads, did exceptionally well

York is very proud of their local celebrity sailor, James Hellstrom, who did York High School and the TEAM RSA all very proud over the 5 days of racing that took place at the RS TeraWorld championships at Pine Lake Marina, Sedgefield. James broke his 3 year bronze medalrun with a stunning display of sailing, taking the Gold Medal in the Pro fleet with a7 point lead over Cape Town’s Jason Gray. Zimbabwe’s Christopher Crawford took the Bronze bybeating 4th place and top girl local sailor Tammy Holden from Mossel Bay Yacht andBoat Club.

A True Blue Yorkie
Jordan Joubert, playing in the nr 9 jersey for the York u16A team, showed tremendous commitment to rugby by being the only player on the team to not have missed a single practice session this season. Jordan is a valuable player who can always be trusted to contribute towards the success of the team. York salutes you, Jordan! Special mention must also be made of LwandoBaleni, Tristyn Dent, Kamal Ghedi-Alasow,AnathiSijila and SiyaMjumba who only missed one or two practices through the season. It is the dedication of young players like these that assures the success of rugby at York.
Rugby @ York High School York High’s first team has had an exciting and successful 2014 season. Ranked number two in the Western Province, based on achievement, they were clear winners of the George
School’s league for small schools. They have now earned the right to play in the semi-finals of the Burger competition in the category small schools.

Anele Tyhulu is a member of The Knysna Celtic soccer club. His team took part in the Oyster festival tournament and they were the winners out of 17 teams. Some of the prize money that the team won, they donated to charities and the rest will be used for development of soccer in Knysna.

Gimnastiekprestasies
