TIPS & TRICKS

for the track runner This article is written by a runner and is directed towards runners on race day, but the same thoughts apply to throwers and jumpers on meet day. Put these 7 Tips & Tricks to work for you and focus on improvement and success!

For morning races, always eat something on race day. Some toast or a bagel with some peanut butter is an excellent race day breakfast. A power bar is another good choice. Be sure to drink at least a cup of water with breakfast 2 to 3 hours before race time. Try to avoid soda or sugary drinks on days when you have races – they will NOT help your performance. Water works best. Even energy drinks should be diluted with water. Did you know that an energy drink isn't helpful unless the race is longer than 1 hour?

Runners have worries. Every runner on the starting line usually asks: “Does my ankle hurt?”, “Is my knee aching?” or “Am I getting a cold?” Don’t worry - when you outsprint another runner to the finish, somehow, that all seems to go away. Even when you don’t feel your best, you must still give your best! Before your races try to relax – yes, relax! Repeat to yourself: “I’m strong, I’m fast, I’m well trained!” Repeat this in your head again and again. Pretty soon you’ll start to feel better. If that doesn’t work, scream real loud and start to wave your arms. You won’t run any faster, but you’ll definitely feel better. The first half of a race, most run poorly. Some go out too fast, some too slow, and some are skilled enough to get it just right. Understand that the success of your race isn’t determined by how you start, but how you finish. It’s the second half that counts. The track season is a race itself, so finish strong. After your performance, assess what you did well. Under-achieving athletes ALWAYS focus on what they did wrong. High-achieving athletes often focus on what went right and can’t wait to repeat it. Even in a less than optimal performance, always find what you did correct, and focus on that! If you choose to focus on what went wrong, here is what you can do: Make two lists, the first list is of the things that you can control, while the second list is of the things you can’t control. Throw the second list out. Now take a look at what you’re left with. That’s where your work lies! tips for better training Athletes’ Checklist

Match your abilities with your interests You have to enjoy your training programme or you probably won’t stick with it long enough to see results. Rather than picking a generic programme or doing what your friends do, adjust your workout time and intensity so that it fits your lifestyle and your current fitness level and allows you to push yourself as needed. Most importantly, find a workout routine that meets your personal goals. If you don’t know where to begin, working with a personal trainer is highly recommended, but it’s also a great way to finetune your fitness plan if you are more advanced.

2. Simplify

Training is largely about consistency and focus. While a technical training programme of heart rates, charts and graphs works for the most dedicated athletes, it may not be necessary for you. If you are feeling overwhelmed, simplify your training to hard and easy or long and short workouts and practise skills needed in your sport. Beyond that, try to enjoy your workouts and listen to your body.

Be flexible

Allowing your body to rest is as important as building strength and endurance. You don’t get stronger by constantly training hard. You’ll build fitness by alternating workouts with recovery. The best way to avoid overtraining is to listen to your body. If your heart rate remains elevated after a night’s rest, if your legs feel heavy, and if your motivation fades, you may need more rest. For those who train year-round, it’s wise to take a week off every three months. This is also the time to change your routine. Read more about the symptoms of overtraining so that you are well-informed.

Vary your workouts, pace and intensity to enjoy a well-rounded fitness routine that is less likely to result in burnout or plateaus. Alternate training intensity and time from day to day. No matter what your pace or goal, your training programme should include a mix of training days. Even the best training programmes will gradually lose efficiency if you don’t vary your routine. This may be fine for those who simply want to maintain fitness or keep healthy, but if you want to improve, you need variation. Ideally, workouts should be modified every month. Cross-training is another great way to vary your routine and improve you fitness.

If you have to miss a training day, don’t worry – just continue on your training plan. It’s the consistency of your training (rather than one particular workout) that is important.

You may want to set a personal best in every race you enter, but it’s probably not realistic. Be honest about your current fitness and your potential. You may want to run a marathon next year, but if you don’t have time to train more than an hour three times per week, that goal is not realistic. It’s important to find a balance between what you want and what you’re able to do. If you’re new to a sport or fitness routine, be conservative in your estimates until you know what you can accomplish, or otherwise you are more prone to injury.

Be patient It takes time and consistency to build up fitness and performance, so avoid falling into the “more is always better” mindset. You’ll only end up injured or frustrated.

Even if you’re starting with very short workouts, it’s important to do them on a regular basis, several days a week. Avoid falling victim to the “weekend warrior syndrome” of working out long and hard only on weekends and doing nothing during the week. Injuries are much more common for those who are inconsistent with exercise.

Nutrition is critical Eating well and hydrating goes a long way to improve your ability to exercise and train. If you are on a regular exercise routine, it’s a good time to reassess your eating habits and learn nutritious ways of eating. Complex carbohydrates provide the best source of energy for sustained exercise. Read up about sports nutrition and about hydration needs.

10. Use proper equipment

No matter what sport or exercise routine you do, you need to make sure your equipment and footwear fit properly. Running in worn-out shoes increases injuries, as does riding an ill-fitting bicycle. Pads, helmets and mouth guards are made to help protect athletes and all appropriate sports safety equipment should be worn and fit you well.
