Bean-andchocolate-brownies
12 Brownies. Preparation 10 minutes. Baking time 25 minutes. This brownies recipe doesn’t really fit into the Keto diet plan because it contains chickpeas and beans. I decided to share this with you because it’s such an interesting recipe and it only contains natural ingredients. The portions are very small so you don’t have to exceed your low carb limit. My Croatian flatmate and very good friend, Natasha Coetsee (née Buratovich) and her business partner, Jessica Riding from the non-profitable dance organization for kids, Move for Two introduced these brownies to me. When she told me how she made it I couldn’t believe her. Try for yourself! Brownies • 30 ml milk • 3 eggs • ¼ cup coconut • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 150 g dates • 1 can (400 g) chickpeas or black beans • ½ cup raw cacoa • ½ t pink salt • 1 t baking powder • 1 tablespoon butter
Chocolate layer (optional) • 100 g dark chocolate (85% of 90%) • 1 tablespoon erythritol • 1 tablespoon butter • 1 tablespoon coconut
1. Preheat oven to 180 °C 2. Mix the milk, eggs, coconut, vanilla and dates in a food processor untill the mixture is smooth. 3. Add the chickpeas or black beans and mix until smooth. 4. Sift the cacoa powder, salt and baking powder in a separate mixing bowl. 5. Add the bean mixture and the dry ingredients together and stir thoroughly until smooth. 6. Grease an oven plate with the butter and spread the mixture evenly on the plate. Bake for 25 minutes. 7. If you want to make the optional chocolate layer, melt the 100g chocolate, erythritol, butter and coconut in the microwave or on the stove and stir thoroughly. Place one side to cool. 8. Take the brownies out of the oven and cooldown for 15-20 minute 9. Spread the chocolate layer on the brownies and leave for 10 minutes in the fridge. Cut and serve with Earl Grey tea!
Why do you think is it important to eat healthy? Food is very important to me. Not only to look good but food is also important to feel good. Food, exercise and sleep are the 3 main pillars for a healthy lifestyle. I believe that most of the illnesses origin comes from food. What type of recipes will be in your cookbook? Everything will be low carb recipes. Some more than others, but the core of all the recipes will be low carbs. From basic Banting to very low carbs ketogenic recipes. The book will have something for everybody and for every occasion. Tell us more about the Keto diet? Basically, it’s the same as the Banting’s low carbs, high fat diet but the idea is to put your body in Ketosis. Ketosis is the state where your body uses fat as energy and not carbohydrates. The Keto diet is VERY low in carbs, moderate protein and high in fat. You have 20minutes before a call-time, what is your go-to meal? Eggs, eggs and more eggs. Some vegetables like spinach, kale or Brussel sprouts pan-fried with 3-4 eggs. It’s quick and full of healthy nutrients. You can’t go wrong with eggs. Armand Aucamp’s cookbook, ‘Armand Kook Kaal – 100 banting en Keto Resepte’ will be available from October 2018. In the meantime, Armand shared a very nice recipe with us!

The town was founded in 1687, is the third oldest settlement in South Africa and has a rich cultural and historical heritage. The birth of Afrikaans as the world’s youngest language is celebrated by the iconic Afrikaans Language Monument that stands prominently on the southern slopes of Paarl Mountain.

AWSUM News is changing the world of school news The biggest school network in Africa has been launched, where school news is shared 24/7 via a central news portal, namely www.awsumnews. co.za. More than 1 800 schools are part of this network and the news is published per region to provide each school with national and regional exposure – free of charge.
parents and learners; and AWSUM News, the 24/7 school news website.
Schools wanted more exposure outside of their direct community and parents wanted to read about school news on a central hub, making it the logical next step. The schools submit their news directly, making our news relevant and audience specific. This school news initiative is designed to integrate with our multiplatform strategy for schools – a first of its kind worldwide.
“AWSUM News is an easy-to-read website where parents, learners, teachers, and grandparents can read the latest about schools in the region, as well as food articles and recipes, news clips on the latest movies, and much more.”
These platforms include:
“It is our responsibility to constantly renew to give school and their learners the exposure they deserve”, says Durandt van Zyl, Chief Executive Officer at the TieMedia Group that is managing the AWSUM brand.
Van Zyl invites all schools to send their daily school news for placement and include any sport (internal and external), cultural and academic achievements as they happen.

School sports injuries
Winter is Coming With the Easter rugby festivals behind us, the winter school sports season is well under way. The winter season tends to keep sports physicians and physios a little busier due to the fast and physical nature of these sports. Here’s a brief guide for pupils and parents on the common injuries seen in active school-goers.
My university professor’s words still echo in my brain, “Children are not small adults!” I had little clue what he was talking about at that stage, but his words proved to be wise. The bodies of children and adolescents are very different to those of adults and our younger patients often suffer from injuries not seen in the adult population. Parents can benefit from being familiar with the common injury scenarios so that medical attention from a sports clinician can be sought promptly. School sports injuries can be divided into acute, chronic (overuse) and growth-related injuries.
Acute injuries An acute injury is any sudden sports injury caused by some form of trauma. This trauma can take the form of a collision, a fall, a slap with a hockey stick or some form of twisting injury to a joint. The vast majority of these injuries are contusions (bruises) and/or sprains and strains of ligaments or muscles. These injuries will usually heal well with rest, time and physiotherapy but more serious injuries will require assessment by a sports physician. Also in this category are fractures of bones. Children and adolescents sometimes sustain fractures which involve the growth plates of the bone, these injuries are potentially serious due to the possibility of growth arrest in the affected bone. Concussion is an acute injury which needs to be taken seriously. Concussion can be thought of as shaking of the brain resulting in various physical, cognitive and emotional symptoms. Every suspected concussion must be seen by an experienced sports physician who will guide decisions on return to sport as well as return to school. Concussion is common in rugby but occurs in almost every other sport (equestrian is the most common). Parents should familiarise themselves with the signs and symptoms of concussion to be able to recognise it and seek help if necessary. sportsconcussion.co.za is a fantastic resource for parents, coaches and players. WHAT’S ON, July 2018
Overuse injuries Our youngsters seem to be playing more sport than ever before and often practise or play every day of the week. This repetitive load on muscles, bones and joints can take its toll though and overuse injuries may result. Overuse injuries are more common in those athletes focusing heavily on just one sport for a long time. Playing lots of different sports is preferable to early specialisation. Overuse injuries of bone, known as stress fractures, are relatively common but overuse can cause pain in joints, ligaments, tendons and growth plates too. The cure for these injuries is often a period of rest and offloading of the affected area followed by a controlled return to activity and an adjustment of the training programme to avoid recurrence.
Growth-related injuries Children undergoing rapid growth may develop osteochondroses. These are self-limiting derangements of normal bone growth and usually require no specific treatment. Pain may present at various sites, but common ones include the back of the heel (Sever’s Disease) and below the knee (Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease).
Conclusion Sports injuries are common in school-going children. Most are not serious, and children usually bounce back in record time. Don’t hesitate to consult with a sports medicine professional for more serious injuries or those not responding to rest.
