Headmasters Message

According to historians, rugby football has been played at both Wynberg and SACS since the 19th century whilst hockey only started as an official winter sport at Wynberg in 1968.

In the early days, matches between the two schools were only played once a year but from 1966 there has been a double fixture each year on a home and away basis.

As these two schools are the oldest traditional boys’ schools in the country, with a similar ethos and close neighbors, the games are always very intense and played with passion and commitment.

This year will be no exception, and both these school communities are looking forward to closely contested games, a display of good sportsmanship and a strengthening of the relationship which has been in existence for so long.

We are looking forward to visiting the beautiful SACS campus and trust that it will be an enriching experience. May the healthy and keen rivalry between these two great schools continue to flourish!

How is the composition of the team for this weekend? Are there any injuries? The team is looking ready. There are no major injuries and no significant changes to the lineup.

Are you happy with your results as a team this year?

Yes, the results have been good so far, despite letting a few games slip towards the end. We still have an important job to do with the last three games..

What do you expect from Wynberg on Saturday?

We expect a physical and strong side. That’s how they’ve played for the past couple of years.

What does being captain of SACS mean to you?

Being the captain of SACS means playing for the history and legacy of the jersey. There is a lot of history behind it which I am proud to represent.

Many people will want to know how your day goes before the big game. Do you have any rituals or traditions?

I try to get in the zone and cut out as many distractions as possible. It’s about making the main thing the main thing.

How do you and the team deal with the expectations of your fans and spectators? We just trust our preparation and do what we have done in training. Never doubting ourselves ensures that the team will deliver on the day.

Which famous player (from any sport) do you look up to and why?

SETH BRADFORD

CAPTAIN OF THE FIRST TEAM RUGBY

I look up to Dupont. Although he’s not the biggest, he’s one of the most wellrounded players and has minimal flaws in his game.

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend? They can expect an extremely committed performance from a team that is eager to leave a mark in their final match of

Aden da Costa

BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

How is the composition of the team for this weekend? Are there any injuries?

Our team should be at full strength this weekend. All of our SA “A” players will be back and ready to fire. Our two SA teammates will add a lot of support from the sidelines.

Are you happy with your results this year?

It’s been a season of ups and downs, history created, and some streaks lost. But the next game is the only one that counts.

What do you expect from SACS on Saturday?

We have played against SACS since we were 7 years old. They won’t back down, but I hope they know that we won’t either.

What does being captain of Wynberg mean to you?

Being captain means everything to me. It’s been my dream since Grade R. Wynberg has provided me with so many opportunities, and I will be eternally grateful.

Many people will want to know how your day goes from the big game to your run. Do you have any rituals or traditions?

If you count the same breakfast every game day as a tradition, then maybe. But otherwise, nothing special or crazy. I also like to be at the field at least three hours before we play.

How do you as a team deal with the expectations of your fans and spectators?

Wynberg has a huge support network, but the team and I never feel pressure coming from our old boys or supporters, thanks to our coaches. All we can do is give our best.

Which famous player (any sport) do you look up to and why?

CAPTAIN OF THE FIRST TEAM RUGBY

Cristiano Ronaldo. Not because of the sport he plays (soccer is not my thing) but for who he is. He is a phenomenal athlete who never took his talent for granted and continued to train at the front even as he got older. Even though he is a rockstar, he cares sincerely for people and has made a positive impact on many lives.

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

A passionate display from a group of committed and proud Wynberg boys.

How does your team prepare in the week leading up to a big game such as this weekend against SACS? Every fixture is important. Before installing the plan, we ensure our preview homework is as accurate as possible. We aim to strike a balance between on-feet preparation and rest to make sure that our boys are mentally and physically ready.

Where would you say your strength lies this year? We are fortunate to have a good balance of boys with high work rates and x-factor abilities.

Who has had the biggest influence on you as a coach in your life? Is there someone you look up to? Allen Gerber from Wynberg Boys’ Junior School. He encouraged me to start coaching 23 years ago and is still a close mentor and friend. Allen and the junior school rugby staff continue to feed the high school with a steady stream of

What message do you convey to your team just before they run on the field? They must give their best, work for each other, and enjoy it.

means everything to me. Wynberg has been in my blood almost longer than I have been alive. I have been at Wynberg for 13 years now, and both my brothers are old boys who played hockey. I remember watching the first team at a young age and wanting to be just like them. It is such a big honour that my coaches have so much faith in me and trust me to lead my teammates. I have worked so hard to be in this position, and I’m glad that I have been entrusted with such a great responsibility.

I do not really have any traditions before a game. I do make sure that all my teammates and I are in the best mood possible. I believe that if you are not enjoying yourself and having fun, you are not going to enjoy playing hockey, and that is the most important thing. In the changeroom, we play

What can the school and parents expect from your team this weekend?

An exciting, high-intensity clash with a long history

How does your team prepare in the week leading up to a big game such as this weekend

We don’t really change much from our usual game week prep. It is very important not to overhype these types of games. The boys can be emotionally drained before the game is even played if you treat it like more than a game.

Where would you say your strength lies this year?

Our team cohesion and willingness to try and

Who has had the biggest influence on you as a coach in your life? Is there someone you look up

I have been fortunate to learn from a number of excellent coaches in my time as a player and as a coach, but the main influences have been Wayne Denne, Paul Revington, and Devin Stanton.

What message do you convey to your team just before they run on the field?

You carry a long legacy when you put on the 1st team shirt. Always try to do your school proud.

our music, sing along, but make sure we are all still thinking about the game. We then get in the huddle; I will have a few words with the guys, and anyone else who wants to say something will. We then sing one of our war cries to get the energy up and go straight into an energized warmup.

How do you as a team deal with the expectations of your fans and spectators?

Dealing with the expectation and pressure is part of the process. It is a privilege to wear the Wynberg badge on your chest, and every time you get to wear it, there is pressure to perform. Our goal still stays the same. Our aim is to meet their expectations through our hard work and dedication. We stay committed to the plan and try to deliver our best performance possible.

Which famous player (any sport) do you look up to and why?

Jordan Henderson is the perfect role model for any player. He was never the most talented player on the pitch. He wasn’t technically gifted like other players. What set him apart was how hard he worked. He was always the hardest worker on the field and led by example. He is the perfect example of a leader and somebody I aspire to be like.
