WELCOME

E

ducation is one of the biggest gifts we can give our children. When it becomes time for your child to attend Grade R or Grade 8, choosing a school becomes a very important decision. This is not only from a purely academic point of view, but also to cater for any specific needs or interests your child might have, as well as any activities they might want to take part in.

T

he unique psychological needs of children, whatever that may be, play a huge role when selecting the right school for your child.

I

t is impossible for parents to visit every school’s open day in their region. Also, perceptions of schools can be deceiving.

aking this into account, TieMedia has launched this guidebook to assist parents in getting an overview of good schools, seeing what they have to offer your child and helping you to pre-select schools from this book. From there you can visit these schools on their open days or contact them directly.

T

his is the second edition of this guidebook and we are expanding this book on an annual basis to give you as parent as much information as possible to assist in this very important decision about your child’s future. We thank the schools participating in this edition for their support. I have visited all of them, and they are all worthy of your choice. Durandt van Zyl Managing Director

T

ieMedia recognised the need to provide information to parents and guardians of children by publishing our second school guide book. The book enables the gift of education to be showcased to those parents and guardians who need to make a decision about where to send their children to school, from the selection of participating schools in this medium. Schools are given the opportunity to display their requirements, facilities, history of the school, subjects offered and school fees, as well as academic, sport, cultural and other necessary and informative details.

T

T

his information will guide those making the choice of selecting a little easier, as in some instances this may be a difficult and perhaps final decision.

A

vailable statistics show that only approximately 25% of South African schools are functional in providing the foundational knowledge skills to our children at present. One should also be cognisant of the technological advancement occurring almost daily, and the impact or influence this may have on the learner and educator alike, to what extent schools process this challenge and how they achieve the desired results.

W

e trust that this book will provide the necessary guidelines, and should you require additional information we welcome the opportunity to assist. As we have been told by teachers, a child without education is like a bird without wings. Marika Truter Managing Editor

BULLYING Bullying happens when someone is being hurt either by words or actions, feels bad because of it, and has a hard time stopping what is happening to them. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.

Bullying can be physical or emotional. Physical bullying is hitting, pushing and shoving, fighting, tripping, yelling at someone, making rude gestures, and taking or breaking another person’s things. Emotional bullying is name calling, making fun of someone, laughing at someone, leaving someone out on purpose, starting rumors or telling lies about someone, sending mean messages on a computer or cell phone, and trying to make someone feel bad about who they are.

BULLYING IS UNACCEPTABLE What to do if you are being bullied

The most important thing to do is to tell an adult you trust. Speak to a parent, a family friend, an older brother or sister, or an uncle or an aunt. If the bullying happens at school, speak to your teacher. You can also do these things to help you: • Stay in safe areas at school where there are other people at break and lunchtime. • On the school bus or taxi, sit near the driver or other adults. • If you have to walk, try to leave home and school a bit later or a bit earlier, or walk with other people who live near you, even if they’re older or younger. • If you have a cell phone, be careful who you give your number to. If you receive threatening phone calls or texts, tell your parents or teacher. It is against the law to do that and the police can take action. • If you see anyone else being bullied at your school, tell your teacher in private. People who are being bullied need friends, so if you can help someone, please do so. SCHOOL GUIDEBOOK FOR 2017 6

What to do if you are a bully

Why are you a bully? Is it because someone else is bullying you? Are you bullying because it makes you feel powerful? If you are a bully, think about how it would make you feel if people were making fun of you, harassing you or stealing your lunch money. You probably already know that what you are doing is wrong. If that is true, then take the first step to stopping your behaviour. Ask yourself: • What made me start bullying? • Why do I pick on people? • How do I me feel when I am bullying somebody? • If I want to stop, how can I do it? If you want to stop bullying, speak to an adult you trust who would not judge you and who would love to help you stop being a bully.

Bullying is UNACCEPTABLE, but everyone is entitled to a SECOND CHANCE.

BE A BUDDY...

NOT A BULLY! Information partly sourced and edited from www.bullying.co.uk and www.pacerkidsagainstbullying.org/kab/what-is-bullying

Is ADD or ADHD affecting your child’s learning? Childhood conditions such as ADD, ADHD and hyperactivity cause learning problems for many children. Parents have more questions than answers most of the time. What causes it? What can be done about it? Where do you turn for help? ADD and ADHD

ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) is most commonly seen as a learning problem not necessarily accompanied by unruly behaviour. It usually means the child has an exceptionally short attention span. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) is also very common and usually displays the symptoms of unruly behaviour and a short attention span. The go-to method until recently has been the use of drugs like Ritalin. This has becomed a highly controversial issue. This article will have a look at natural alternatives to taking drugs to improve these conditions.

Diet

Many children have wheat, dairy or other food intolerances. The US Department of Health and Human Services says research has shown that about 3% of children might have a clinically proven food intolerance. Therefore a child responding to a change in diet that cuts out these ‘problem’ foods is normally having a good diet for the first time, or is responding to the increased energy not eating these difficult to digest foods. Normally, supplementing with the correct digestive enzymes will help immensely. Sugar and processed foods, do however need to be carefully monitored, if not completely cut out of the diet. Many children whose diet consists of cool drinks and sweets will exhibit hyperactive behaviour.

Supplementation

There is much information about supplements needed to manage ADD and ADHD. Products such as Sevenpointfive’s Mindset is endorsed by ADHASA (Attention Deficity and Hyperactivity Support Group of Southern Africa). The product includes evening primrose oil, pantothenic acid and L-Glutamine. Each of these ingredients perform specific functions that can help an ADD sufferer control this disorder. 14

Many parents have been able to use these suggestions to improve their child’s perfomance at school and avoid the use of drugs.

INATTENTION

You might not notice it until a child goes to school. The child might procrastinate, not complete tasks like homework or chores, or frequently move from one uncompleted activity to another. They might also: • Be disorganised • Lack focus • Have a hard time paying attention to details and a tendency to make careless mistakes • Have trouble staying on topic while talking, not listen to others, and not follow social rules • Be forgetful about daily activities (such as forgetting to bring lunch) • Be easily distracted by things like trivial noises or events that are usually ignored by others

HYPERACTIVITY

It may vary with age. You might be able to notice it in preschoolers. ADHD symptoms nearly always show up before middle school. Kids with hyperactivity may: • Fidget and squirm when seated • Get up frequently to walk or run around • Run or climb a lot when it’s not appropriate • Have trouble playing quietly or doing quiet hobbies • Always be ‘on the go’ • Talk excessively Toddlers and preschoolers with ADHD tend to be constantly in motion, jumping on furniture and having trouble participating in group activities that call for them to sit still. For instance, they may have a hard time listening to a story. School-age children have similar habits, but you may notice those less often. They are unable to stay seated, squirm a lot, fidget, or talk a lot. INTERSCHOOLS

Interschools is not only about sport; it is also a time for reunions. Various reunion groups meet every year at the Big Brag in the Town Hall, a ceremony which attempts to prepare the whole Boys' High community emotionally for this great occasion and where the Old Boys rekindle old friendships. Sporting greats, such as Hugh Bladen and the legendary Mannetjies Roux, have also addressed the Men in Blue on this occasion. The greatest honour is to be 'capped' by your father with the traditional first team cap on the Friday morning in the school hall. Personalities such as Francois Pienaar, Corné Krige, Gurthrö Steenkamp and Ashwin Willemse have addressed the boys on this occasion in preparation for all the matches on the Friday and Saturday afternoons, culminating with the main match at the Faure Street Stadium at four o'clock. This tradition was originally reserved for the first rugby team, but since 2003 the first hockey side members have also been 'capped'. During the year all the the u.19A teams are capped when competing against Paarl Gimnasium. The weekend ends with the 'Krymekaar' in the school hall where we celebrate a wonderful weekend that is unparalalled in school sport.

henish Girls’ High School celebrated its 155th birthday in 2015.

The oldest girls’ school in the country, and the first boarding school for girls, we pride ourselves on our traditions while striving to remain abreast of developments in our quest to offer our girls a wellrounded 21st century education.

Rhenish Celebrates Consistent Excellence in Matric Results

• a 100% pass rate - a long standing tradition at Rhenish where there has not been a failure in some 29 years. An impressive record that is a credit to the educators who provide incredible nurturing support for even the weakest of learners as they strive to ensure that every girl is able to reach her potential in her school leaving exam. • 100% of the Class of 2014 achieved Bachelor passes that will enable them to study at university and Rhenishers will continue to swell the ranks of

universities, colleges and technology institutions around the country. Rhenish was the only state school in the Western Cape to achieve this in 2014. • Ranked 12th in the Western Cape for the 2014 NSC examination The true depth of a school’s academic quality is measured by the learners’ progress at tertiary level and the feedback on Rhenishers from the various tertiary institutions is positive. Both the variety of courses followed and the level of excellence attained bear testimony to the academic rigour instilled at Rhenish.

Rhenish is the Top Swimming School in Western Cape For 10 consecutive years, Rhenish has won the coverted “Boy/Girl” Gala at Newlands AND the 4M Gala (a hotly contested gala between Rhenish, Bloemhof Girls’, Paarl Girls’ and La Rochelle Girls’)

Rhenish Is Committed to Educational Excellence

38

• Rhenish is committed to ensuring that our educators and learners have access to the latest technology and educational tools to ensure that they remain abreast of developments and trends in education • Rhenish led the way in Stellenbosch in 2015 with an exciting ICT eLearning pilot project that saw every Grade 9 learner having access to a personal device (in this case a tablet) onto which a selection of textbooks were loaded. In this way, technology has become part of the learning environment in the same way that textbooks and exercise books are at Rhenish. This will be

extended to Grade 8s and Grade 10s in 2016. • Rhenish has recently upgraded their facilities to include • Additional classrooms that replaced existing aged prefabricated ones • A new all-purpose hall • An all-weather, all-season, multipurpose astroturf • Educators remain abreast of developments in their field through regular in-service training • Our Learner Support Unit provides essential support and guidance to learners with learning difficulties or whose ability to perform to their potential is compromised

Creates Opportunities For her Learners

• To develop leadership skills through a wide array of leadership roles – Class Captains, Sporting Captains, Heads of Clubs or Societies, Cheerleaders, Mentors, Matric Committee, Hostel Learner Council and Learner Council • To give back to their communities (clubs and societies such as Interact, Soup Ingredients, Golden Oldies, RHECO, Cancer Society, Sibongomusa Creche Project) • To develop opinions and explore views while nurturing tolerance and understanding of diversity through the Debating Society, Public Speaking and Siyaphambili • To play sport at a level of excellence – Swimming, Hockey, Netball, Squash, Water Polo, Tennis, Athletics, Soccer and Cross Country • To undertake sporting and cultural tours • To embrace culture through Art and Music (Art at the PJ Olivier Centre and our own richly talented Music Department), Orchestra, Choir and Marimba

“At Rhenish we strive to give our girls the courage to continue in their efforts to achieve their goals, in spite of the challenges they may face along the way; we encourage them to value their education as an instrument of change – in their lives and in the lives of those with whom they engage; and we have faith in their potential to be our future leaders in the different fields they choose once they leave school.” Helmien Slabber, Principal

Collegiate Girls' High School ESTABLISHED: 1874

Pursuing excellence through holistic education

COLLEGIATE – MANY PROUD TRADITIONS

C

ollegiate Girls’ High School, Port Elizabeth, is one of the oldest girls’ schools in the country with a rich heritage of excellence, community involvement and leadership.

In 1874, 142 years ago, the wealthier parents of the colonial settlement in Algoa Bay, saw the need for a school and boarding house that allowed their daughters to attain a quality education within a safe, forward-thinking environment. The first Lady Principal, Miss Isitt, was

brought to South Africa from England and the school opened with 38 pupils.

Today, there are about 1400 girls attending the Collegiate Schools, 700 in each of the Junior and High. Soon a commitment to excellence was established in the late 1800s which has become a proud tradition of Collegiate and is reflected in excellent Grade 12 results: in 2013 the school delighted in not only a 100% pass rate, but also a 100% University degree entrance pass rate! Miss Isitt challenged the all-male

school board and insisted on speaking in public at the prize-giving (considered extremely unbecoming for a lady). This made her the first female public speaker in the province and, quite possibly, the country.

At the start of the Second Anlgo Boer War, Miss Isitt was succeeded by Miss Molteno as Principal. Amongst Miss Molteno’s immediate group of friends was Olive Schreiner, a fore-runner to the feminist writers of the 20th century. Miss Molteno was integral to cultivating a sense of loyalty

and integrity in the girls of the day. Successive Principals continued to establish traditions at the school such as giving ladies a voice through the establishment in the early 1900s of the debating and literary societies; implementing charity initiatives, and establishing a deeply-rooted sense of service, captured in the motto, Facta non Verba – Deeds not Words. Embodied in this motto are the five values that Collegiate holds dear: integrity, compassion, responsibility, respect and good work ethic.

HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY – DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

Some might think the hospitality industry is all about smiling sweetly and greeting guests, but the reality of this industry is that it is fast-paced and tough, demanding utter dedication and long hours. Yet, it is also one of the most rewarding career environments for those who loves to get the adrenalin pumping. According to Jeff Rosenberg, general manager of the Tsogo Sun Waterfront hotel and Vice Chairperson of FEDHASA Cape the hospitality industry is not for sissies. “You have to be in for the long run. To survive you need passion and enthusiasm, be well trained and original. In addition, to really compete, you have to have a large dose of flair.” The career options are many and varied: apply your passion

58

as a chef, event manager, food writer, concierge or human resource manager at a leading accommodation establishment – or work as an entrepreneur.

Q: How do you choose a training institution? A: According to Susina Jooste, head of The Private Hotel School (TPHS) in Stellenbosch, you should try to tick as many of the following boxes as possible: • Is the institution registered with all the local authorities? • Are the programmes approved by the quality assurance bodies such as the DHET for higher education or QCTO for occupational education? • Do they have links with the International Hospitality Management Schools? • Are there articulation

possibilities if you want to convert to another qualification or another institution? • Are their students employed and respected in the industry? • Are there established partnership with leading hotels and restaurants for high value internship placements? Q: Why is experiential learning or work-based learning important? A: It is important that a training institution carefully matches students with highlevel restaurants or hotels for real-life exposure during their internships. It is ultimately during this period of in-service training that a student determines whether he/she is in fact able to handle the pressures of this industry. In this case the international agreements are

invaluable in offering students the opportunity to also gain international experience. Q: If a normal 9-5 job sounds like a death sentence, what are the options for entrepreneurship within this industry? A: The opportunities to enter this industry as an entrepreneur are indeed vast and exciting. Examples of past students of TPHS who have chosen this route today work as food writers, event coordinators, manage their own training businesses, generate their income at speciality food markets or as pastry chefs, or operate a coffee shop and guest house or sailing on their yacht in the Caribbean and preparing fine food for theirs guests.

SA student loans and bursaries South Africa is home to many world-class universities and colleges, and you’re smart and want to get ahead in life. How are you going to pay for your studies? Studying is an expensive undertaking. You can expect to pay between R20 000 and R30 000 for each year of undergraduate study at a South African university. Specialised or professional degrees, such as medicine and engineering, can cost much more. South Africa also has a wide range of private colleges, where tuition fees can be higher than at the subsidised public institutions. Be sure to consider your options before deciding how to pay for your studies, and apply for any award or bursary for which you’re eligible.

National financial aid If you are a South African citizen you may be eligible for a National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) loan for study at one of the country’s public higher education institutions. The NSFAS, a statutory body funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training, provides study loans to academically able but financially needy students. Much of an NSFAS loan can be converted into a bursary, which does not then need to be repaid, depending on one’s academic progress. A 100% pass rate would result in a 40% bursary rebate on an NSFAS loan. The size of the initial NSFAS loan ranges from R2 000 to R30 000. You should apply at your university’s financial aid office.

University financial aid If you have already enrolled at a university, or are considering doing so, their financial aid office should be your first stop. Most universities offer bursaries or grants to students who have excelled in their previous studies, or on the sports field. Check with your university’s financial aid office whether you are eligible for any of these bursaries or awards, and apply before the closing date, which is usually in October of the year preceding the start of your studies, but can be as early as March. The NSFAS website carries a comprehensive list of the contact details of South African educational institutions

External bursaries Many South African companies and provincial government departments offer bursaries to promising students. The terms of these bursaries vary tremendously. Contract bursaries require you to “pay back” the bursary by working at the company once you’ve completed your degree – giving you a job and work experience immediately after your graduation.

68

Many mining and engineering companies, in particular, provide contract bursaries. A booklet known as the Bursary Register is published every year and includes a full list of bursaries available in your particular field. While copies are available at most high schools and at your university’s financial aid office, you can also order a copy from: The Bursary Register Tel: +27 (0)11 672 6559 Email: rlevin@mweb.co.za

Student loans All of South Africa’s major banks offer student loans, both to South Africans and to non-South Africans with valid study permits. Bank loans, unlike NSFAS loans, will also cover studies at a private institution. When applying for a bank loan, you will have to show proof of registration at an educational institution. You’ll also need somebody, such as a parent or guardian, to sign surety for you. Although you will only need to start repaying your bank loan once you’ve completed your studies, you will need to keep up the interest payments throughout the term of the loan.

Paying your own way You can also choose to pay your own way. By taking a year off to work before studying, or by working part-time while pursuing your studies, you can gain valuable work experience while earning to finance your degree. You’ll have to be disciplined, however, to make sure that you set aside enough time for both your studies and your work, and to make sure that you don’t fall behind in either.

Websites with bursary information • GoStudy SA: lists bursaries according to field of study and includes bursary values, as well as a link to specific sites. • HCI’s National Bursary Scheme, which offers 1 200 bursaries a year to financially needy undergraduate students. • Funding opportunities from the National Research Foundation, which is one of the Department of Science and Technology’s key science councils.
