4). What courses do you teach? Which course do you enjoy teaching and why? I have taught the majority of the DCP courses, both online and seated throughout the various academic locations. Although I do enjoy teaching all of the DCP courses, my absolute favorite course to teach is the SOC360 Multicultural Issues in Society class. I have also taught seated undergraduate main campus courses and online master’s degree courses as well. My favorite master’s degree course to teach is JUS620 Administrative Theory in Justice Administration. I have a published textbook that is used as a supplemental text for that course as well.
5). Family Info/Interests/Hobbies I am married and have three sons. I enjoy reading, golf, and family time.
6). What advice do you have for students wishing to enter the field of Criminal Justice? The best advice that I can offer students wishing to enter the field of criminal justice is to always keep an open mind, think critically, and never take things personally. I also encourage students to stay current in their chosen careers paths and to build a solid, sustained career through continued education, professional affiliations, and networking.
7). Additional Comments: I am an active member of the Junior National Young Leaders Association and serve as an Educational Advisor in Washington, D.C. I have also appeared on Tiffin Professor Keith Haley’s weekly Blog Talk Radio show and also National Public Radio as a guest speaker. Most recently, I was invited to Washington DC by the National Alliance to End Homelessness to assist in securing funds at a Congressional forum. This is a national endeavor that focuses on the less fortunate.

Finder’s Fee
CANCELLATION DUE TO DECLINE IN WEATHER CONDITIONS
Degree Completion classes are moving right along! Students are well on their way to completing bachelor’s degrees. Cohorts begin several times throughout the year, and we are looking for students just like you. Perhaps you can help us by: • Putting us in touch with someone who is looking for an opportunity to get back on track to completing a college degree. We offer a “finder’s fee” of $100 to any current student who refers someone who successfully enrolls in a future cohort. The fee will be applied directly to your student account. • Putting us in touch with someone in your company who can help set up an onsite information session. We are always willing to visit area companies to explain the benefits of our program for their employees and their business. (There is no finder’s fee for this referral, just our gratitude!) Do you have any Questions? We’ll be happy to give you details. We also have promotional materials that you are welcome to take and distribute.
Tis the season for snowy weather! In the event of inclement weather, please be sure to listen to local radio/iAlert/tv stations for closing information. For students at our academic centers please be aware that you will not have class if the closest community college to your center is closed. For our students taking courses at community colleges, if the school you are taking classes at is closed, you will not have class. It is possible that academic centers will close even if the closest community college does not. Be sure to contact your advisor if you have questions about class cancellations. Word of the day candor \KAN-der\, noun: 1. honesty in giving one’s view or opinion; frankness and sincerity. 2. fairness; impartiality What remains to be seen is whether the candor he offered in his early memoir will be greeted with a new-style acceptance by voters. -- Lois Romano, The Washington Post, 2007-01-03 But we know that real leadership is about candor and judgment and the ability to rally Americans from all walks of life around a common purpose, a higher purpose. -- The Guardian, 2008-01-27 Dictionary.com (2009). Academic Honesty and Plagiarism: When students are under pressure sometimes they turn to the internet to find papers that have already been written to submit instead of original work. Sometimes students do not allow themselves enough time to finish a paper and do not properly cite the paper using APA. Both of these instances are considered plagiarism. Please be aware of Tiffin’s Academic Honesty Policy.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
Academic institutions have the responsibility to promote the highest standards of ethics among students. Tiffin University places the highest value on academic honesty. Any act of academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, committed by a student may be penalized with an “F” for the assignment or for the course at the discretion of the instructor. If warranted, acts of academic dishonesty may also attract more severe sanctions, such as suspension or dismissal. The complete policy is available in the Student Handbook. Plagiarism - is probably the most common and obvious form of academic dishonesty. Plagiarism is defined in the Student’s Book of College English by Squire and Chitwood (Encino, California: Glencoe Publishing Co., 1975) as follows: Plagiarism is the use of facts, opinions, and language taken from another writer without acknowledgment. In its most sordid form, plagiarism is outright theft or cheating; a person has another person write the paper or simply steal a magazine article or section of a book and pretend to have produced a piece of original (work). Far more common, is plagiarism in dribs and drabs, a sentence here and there, a paragraph here and there. Unfortunately, small-time theft is still theft, and small-time plagiarism is still plagiarism. For your own safety and self-respect, remember the following rules: • The language in your paper [or oral presentation] must either be your own or a direct quote from the original author. • Refer to the APA guide for correct citation methods. • A writer may not avoid a charge of plagiarism simply because the work from which the material has been used is included in a citation somewhere in the writing. Each occurrence of the use of another person’s work must be cited. In addition to your APA manual, the following websites may be helpful for formatting your papers and citing your references using APA style. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ http://www.liu.edu/cwis/cwp/library/workshop/citapa.htm
COURSE EVALUATIONS After each course in the Degree Completion Program, you will be asked to complete a course evaluation. Be honest when completing evaluations. The process is anonymous, and the information that we gain from them is considered when changes are made to course content, instructors, and book selections. Your attention to course evaluations is appreciated and will benefit the program and your fellow students.

mary ellen denny Mary Ellen Denny, Assistant Director of Online Degree Completion Student Services works out of our Elyria Academic Center. She has been with the university for 4½ years and enjoys the students with whom she works. As an adult who went back to school in her late thirties, she can easily identify with the students she advises. The concerns of juggling work, raising a family and getting back into school mode is something she knows first hand. Helping students meet their academic goals is something she finds to be quite rewarding. Graduation is one of Mary Ellen’s most enjoyable days at the university. The relationships she builds with her students are usually through phone calls or emails so when she can meet her students face-to-face at graduation it fills her with great joy. Mary Ellen resides in Amherst, Ohio with her husband of 34 years and her cat. She has three grown children and one grandson. She enjoys weekend trips to local flea markets hunting for treasures, gardening and reading.
When she can meet her students face-to-face at graduation it fills her with great joy.
Spring 2009 Reminder New cohorts will begin the week of March 23rd in both program areas, Business Administration and Criminal Justice.
